Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Hi all, joining you for another B2B today and tomorrow. I'm also going on holiday next week so am also trying a bit of preventative damage control!

Good luck everyone!

EatYourFive · 25/07/2022 18:04

Kitchen closed nice and early at 526, dinner was hummus and falafel. Work lunch tomorrow so will be back here on Wednesday for a B2B. Good luck today everyone!

mumlikeaboss · 25/07/2022 20:19

Full fast done today, only water and black coffee ☕💦 Wasn't sure if I'd manage to stick with this during holidays, but TBH I haven't yet found it any harder. And the extra energy I get on fast days is a massive benefit for chasing round after the DC!

Was absolutely amazed that I'd lost ANOTHER 3lbs when I weighed on Saturday morning - that's about 9lbs in 3 weeks 😮 I know it will have to slow down at some point but so far I'm just super happy that the weight's coming off again.

sweetgingercat · 25/07/2022 23:15

Well done @mumlikeaboss that's fabulous news. Especially during the holidays.

Kitchen closed at 602 tonight.Back tomorrow for the second day of a B2B.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 26/07/2022 07:32

Hello, signing in. Battling a bit as we’re inundated with visitors, which is lovely but has messed with my routines big time. Expecting today to be a slog. Black coffee and green tea so far.

SydneyCarton · 26/07/2022 08:21

Office day today so I am fasting. Didn’t do so well over the last few days, nothing mad but didn’t track on NFDs and drank a bit more than usual on Saturday (which tbh is not very much these days 🙄). I weighed in last Thursday and had gone up 1.5 lbs which was a bit disappointing but not hugely surprised. On holiday next week as well so if I can get at least half a pound off this week to dip back under 10 stone that’ll do!

mumlikeaboss · 26/07/2022 09:24

Good luck @sydney, @theway and anyone else fasting today 🤗

Up day for me today and I have some lovely meals planned but not even hungry yet 🤣

It's quite amazing how this method of IF affects my appetite so much more than 16:8 or OMAD ever did! I finally feel like I'm eating "normal" portions and not hoovering up snacks between meals either... Wow. And not through self-control, just because I'm less hungry.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 26/07/2022 18:27

Kitchen closed on one measly yoghurt as I feel a bit unwell and lack appetite, so making a virtue of necessity. Good luck Wednesday fasters!

SydneyCarton · 26/07/2022 22:06

Kitchen closed on 529, not the best quality calories but happy with the number. NFD tomorrow and back for FD 2 on Thursday

sweetgingercat · 26/07/2022 22:20

Kitchen closed on 682 tonight. Looking forward to a day off tomorrow! Back on Thursday if anyone else is fasting then?

mumlikeaboss · 26/07/2022 23:18

I'm fasting tomorrow and Friday... Going away Saturday for 4/5 days so will definitely end up relaxing my fasts and probably won't get another full-day fast in until late next week.

I think I will weigh Saturday before I go (have weighed Saturdays so far) but am already apprehensive about it!! Had such good losses for 3 weeks that I'm dreading seeing it slow down or level out in case I get disheartened 🙈🙈🙈

Well done everyone who fasted today 😊

EatYourFive · 27/07/2022 07:05

Day 1 B2B. Anyone with me? @harriethoyle?
Feeling hungry already.😁

harriethoyle · 27/07/2022 07:24

Morning @EatYourFive I'm here and dreading it 🤣

harriethoyle · 27/07/2022 07:31

Oh my days, just got on the scales... 3.5 kg on after a week of holiday 🤪🙈 it better come off as quickly!

EatYourFive · 27/07/2022 09:00

Dreading it too @harriethoyle! And that will come off quickly I'm sure, mostly fluids!

mumlikeaboss · 27/07/2022 12:57

How long has everyone on here been doing this way of eating? Whether 5:2 or 4:3 or ADF...

Badlifeday · 27/07/2022 13:46

I'm trying to fast today after 3 weeks off with holiday and then Covid - hope I will make it to the end!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 27/07/2022 13:53

How long has everyone on here been doing this way of eating? Whether 5:2 or 4:3 or ADF...

2018 for me - lost 25kg of (pregnancy and other) weight after my daughter was born, then maintained w/6:1; now again 5:2ing after giving birth to my twins. Hence my ability to live mainly on black coffee Grin, to cope with sleep deprivation!

CrabPuff · 27/07/2022 14:16

I’m checking in for today. I’m not sure about tomorrow but must grit teeth for today anyway!

had 120 cals of toast and marmalade after the gym so trying to leave any further food til at least 5pm, and making myself many cups of tea…

EatYourFive · 27/07/2022 14:32

@mumlikeaboss Since November this time around, have lost around 10 kg.😊

Lost weight with 5:2 successfully also around 5 years ago after having had my youngest. But I didn't keep it up and put on some more weight during the pandemic which made me restart last year.

mumlikeaboss · 27/07/2022 14:40

@TheWayTheLightFalls that's awesome 🤩 I love hearing from people who have done it for years.

@EatYourFive 10kg is great 🤗 Did you carry on with any kind of fasting after you lost weight 5 years ago? Or did you manage to maintain (until the pandemic!) without needing to fast?

@Badlifeday much strength and coffee for your fast today! 💪🏻☕

EatYourFive · 27/07/2022 16:18

@mumlikeaboss no not really, didn't even do 6:1 and the weight came back on slowly. It plateaued around 65-67 kg (was ~60 kg after last doing 5:2 five years ago) before shooting somewhere beyond 70 kg after the pandemic kicked off.🙄I'm now back to around 60 kg but hoping to reach 57 kg. I'm in my 40s and even to maintain I will probably have to keep doing 5:2 or at the very least 6:1 forever.

mumlikeaboss · 27/07/2022 17:17

@EatYourFive yeah okay, fair enough.

I'm wondering for myself how I will juggle the 'maintenance' phase if/when I ever get down to where I want to be...

Previously I've done diets (WW/SW or calorie-counting or low-carb etc., etc.) and couldn't bear the thought of having to eat like that the rest of my life!! Hence I always stopped and regained 🙄 but I think honestly I will be quite happy to fit some kind of fasting in forever now I'm so used to it. It doesn't feel restrictive and obsessive like all the diets did.

So here's hoping we can find a way of fasting that suits us for life 🤞🏻

Catsrus · 27/07/2022 17:24

veteran of the original thread here - back in 2012.

Life changing.

Have kept the weight off, settled about 7lb higher than my target - which I reached but was not sustainable. Lost 35lb ish ( from memory). My BMI is stable at 21

Went up a bit (6-7lb) during winter lockdown - but easy to take off again now I have the tools.

Generally do 16:8 ish these days - but everything is "ish" these days as weight is just not an issue, eating is not an issue. I have a very healthy diet - eat real food mainly plants etc - but in the last month I've had visitors, so meals out (Indian and Italian), two medium (not small, and, yes, to myself) dominos - with sides of wedges, plenty of wine. Ice cream (double scoop) walking along the beach a few times.

I naturally, now, eat less on days after such indulgences, but it's just normal adjustments - I'm not that hungry.

My appetite has reset - I forget to eat then realise I'm hungry.

10yrs on and I still thank Michael Moseley for that documentary. Now in my late 60's I can buy clothes confident they will still fit me in a few years time.

It really worked for me.

Badlifeday · 27/07/2022 17:36

That's great to hear Catsrus, your phrase "eating is not an issue" is so lovely to hear as I can't remember a time in my life when eating has not been an issue for me. I long for that freedom!
