Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Kitchen closed at 515 this evening. Looking forward to the first slice of home grown tomato on toast tomorrow!

Thanks - this is exactly what I used to do - nothing until 4pm where I had my 500 cals and then early to bed. It really worked for me.

But when I've tried it since having my second child, I just can't sustain it. I feel dizzy, weak, lightheaded etc. so thought maybe it's an electrolyte issue? I am anaemic but have been taking iron and my iron is better now that it's ever been (but still low).

I was very anaemic in the second pregnancy so maybe my body has just not recovered enough from that

I do also suffer from fibromyalgia and M.E (chronic fatigue syndrome) and although these have been in my life for years, the M.E has been particularly bad this past year. Since the covid jags to be precise

Ahh, that's tough.

I had super low iron after my first birth (haemorrhaged and lost 1.3 litres of blood! 😵) and I found Spatone sachets worked wonders making me feel better again.

And for electrolytes, I sometimes just put a bit of Maldon sea salt under my tongue if I'm feeling a bit woozy or headachy and it often helps - not always, but often!

Maybe you just do have too much going on though, and need to be gentler on yourself. Fasting is technically a "stress" on your body - although we use it as a good stress, like exercise - and if you're under pressure from lots of other things, a long fast might be too much.

What sweetgingercat says about easing into it is a great idea. You can start with much shorter fasts - try doing the daily fasts like 16:8 or 14:10 and gradually build up when you're confident with those. Maybe your body just needs a bit of help remembering how to fast, rather than diving right back in at the deep end 🤗

Good morning checking in for a 2nd FD of this week.

felicityfortunate · 20/07/2022 08:43

Brilliant fiveaday
Keep us updated

beststepforward · 20/07/2022 08:47

@sweetgingercat and @mumlikeaboss I really appreciate you taking the time out to post!

@harriethoyle how's BigChocFrenzy? I miss her posts.

Step 1 is hydrating. I'm feeling very dehydrated

felicityfortunate · 20/07/2022 08:50

Oddly, even though I do love food, I'm a bit wary of having my breakfast
Like, it might spoil my fast and open the floodgates of hunger

mumlikeaboss · 20/07/2022 09:03

Ahh thank you felicity 😁😊

I just get a bit carried away and suddenly realise I've typed about 8 paragraphs and everyone's probably snoring 🤣

And yes I do find breakfast does that for me!! 😬

SydneyCarton · 20/07/2022 11:34

Signing in for day 2 of b2b, which is tricky as I'm at home and surrounded by food (I usually do my FDs in the office to remove temptation). Pleasantly surprised at how well it's going so far on one cup of tea and water. Dinner tonight will be chicken souvlaki, Greek salad and flatbread, which I think will come in about 870 - a bit high but I'm comfortable with that.

CrabPuff · 20/07/2022 14:36

Checking in - I’ve got seabass and miso aubergine for tonight and had some melon and calamari for lunch. Should come in probably at 600 ish I think once I’ve totted everything up. I might do a mini on Friday to just add to slightly failed FDs.

CrabPuff · 20/07/2022 21:00

Happy to admit I’m in bed and praying for sleep! Calories are 589 so not ideal but could be worse. NFD tomorrow and I think I’ll get more fish for Friday for my mini.

have a gym class tomorrow to get myself to and hope the hunger is moderate and not raging afterwards.

hope everyone else is on track!

mumlikeaboss · 20/07/2022 21:09

@crab I'm already in bed too 😁 nearly up to 27 hours and now going to sleep through the rest of my 36 👌🏻

Found today a little hard going, think I'm still run down after the weekend and I have a killer headache that is refusing to go whatever I do 🙄

But v happy that I made it through 😇 and got some lovely food lined up for tomorrow.

Hope everyone else's fasts went okay today, or good luck for tomorrow's.

EatYourFive · 21/07/2022 07:48

I finished at 550 yesterday, a bit over the target as not doing a B2B after all. Dinner was a gousto meal without rice. I quite like having gousto on fast days as they give you calories per portion on Nutracheck which I use count my intake on FDs.

sweetgingercat · 21/07/2022 16:51

Oh dear… is anyone fasting today? I am doing badly. It’s the first day of the school holidays and I feel out of control. I’ve had a deluge of requests for iced coffee, biscuits, sushi in a restaurant etc etc… and I’ve eaten 400 Cals and feel like I’m never going to last out the day on 100 cals. Why is it so hard not to eat when kids are around?!

I'll be attempting a fast tomorrow, the first of the holidays 😬 sure it's going to be harder!!

I have been used to doing OMAD / daily eating windows, so I may just have to go back to doing that if I struggle too much with full fast days.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 21/07/2022 18:32

Why is it so hard not to eat when kids are around?!

Because they are so bloomin’ stress-inducing, in my case! I think I may nick @mumlikeaboss ‘s idea and OMAD over the next few weeks. I have three under five, in my defence. And twins, in my further defence! Grin

sweetgingercat · 22/07/2022 00:34

Wow @TheWayTheLightFalls that's a lot of kid stress! What I hate most is the uncertainty, one minute you think you're doing fine and everything's going to plan and then next you find yourself staring at an ice cream and it's all changed and you won't get home to eat until really late!

Anyway, I managed 644 cals today. It wasn't great, but my B2B earlier in the week was under so I feel okay.

mumlikeaboss · 22/07/2022 17:09

About 21 hours in to a 36-hour fast!

Kids are whining about being bored already 😱😩 got 6 more weeks of this 😂
But have managed so far to stay busy and not be tempted to eat.

We're going away end of next week for a few days (staying with family) and I'm a bit wary because I know they're breakfast dinner & lunch sort of people who would be TOTALLY bemused at the idea of fasting 😬 Not sure if I'll mention the 'f' word as I don't want them all staring at me like I have 2 heads 😂 so I'll probably end up with very short daily fasts for a few days. Will skip breakfast here and there if I can.

Just hope I don't struggle to get back into 4:3 when we get home again, because I'm really in the swing of it right now and don't want to undo all the effort!

sweetgingercat · 22/07/2022 23:06

Hi @mumlikeaboss I'm like you. I'd rather not talk to people about fasting and just quietly get on with it and just talk to everyone here. I find people get uncomfortable and think 5 2 is extreme. I've only told one person since I started in January and she's mega supportive. I'm going on holiday shortly and I'll have to break it and come back to it afterwards. I usually find I'm ready to get back into it after eating more anyway. But it's disappointing, like I'm feeling on a roll at the moment, especially after getting out with the kids every day on our bikes which stops them staring at their screens! Good luck, I hope you have a great trip.

mumlikeaboss · 23/07/2022 08:30

Ah thanks @sweetgingercat 😊

I've told a few people (only if they ask what I've been doing to lose the weight) but usually tell them about the 16:8 version of IF. That often seems to blow their minds, I can't imagine what people would say if they knew I went twice that long, or more, without eating! 😆

But to be fair, I used to think ADF and 4:3 were pretty extreme when I first started fasting... It's amazing how you adjust and realise what your body is capable of.

harriethoyle · 25/07/2022 10:50

Morning all! I'm partially back after a holiday period with the in laws who like to show their love through food... Dreading getting on the scales! Am doing IF today and tomorrow and then b2b Weds and Thurs once everyone has gone home and things are back to normal. Actually looking forward to feeling hungry again! Went to bed last night feeling like a foie gras goose...!

EatYourFive · 25/07/2022 14:05

Hello
I'm fasting today and will be joining you for a b2b on Wednesday and Thursday @harriethoyle! Have three weeks before I go on a holiday so will try and push a bit harder and fit in 3 FDs each week, will see how that goes! Going away for two weeks and not planning to fast when away so have to do some preventative damage control! 😁

CrabPuff · 25/07/2022 16:08

FD today - did a solid workout this morning and having Cajun chicken this evening. And by this evening I think I mean 5.30.

next one is probably on Wednesday.
