Fasting / 5:2 diet

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Thanks harriet and mumlikeaboss Grin I had to get on the scales four times before I got the same weight twice, so I'm a little sceptical about it, but I'll take it for now!

I vote for powering through felicityfortunate, I always find a busy day is easier to do as there's no time to think about food. Unless by active you mean running a half marathon or something 😁

I’m here @harriethoyle but annoyed with myself as I’ve just realised I am going out to meet three friends for noodles tonight . What to do? Change my fast day to tomorrow or order the noodles (600 cal) and only eat half? I think the second, if I can police myself!

Definitely get it done - I'm coming in at c. 580 today on planned meals and I'm definitely counting that as a fast day!

@felicityfortunate same advice for you! I'm at running club later which isn't ideal on a FD, but needs must. And will be good for you to have 2 FD under your belt before the weekend!

@harriethoyle I was under 600 cals during both my B2Bs so I can afford an extra 100 cals today!

Exactly @sweetgingercat . I am in a FURIOUSLY bad mood after my brother (tbf inadvertently) wound me up about care home visiting for my Dad and it's all I can do not to fall into a vat of wine. You and @felicityfortunate can keep me on the straight and narrow and delay wine time til tomorrow!

Sorry to hear about sibling/parental care issues. My parents are no longer alive but there was plenty of stress between us when they became old and ill.

Tomorrow night will be a great night for wine @harriethoyle. I will think of you when I am enjoying mine! Keep strong...

Kitchen closed on 782 - yesterday was 515 so that’s ok for a B2B I think but I’m glad it’s over. Teeth brushed and feeling virtuous but need to go to bed with the most absorbing book I can think of.

I woke up with a whopping headache this morning so have not been to the gym but have eaten a decent breakfast and it seems to have subsided.

how infuriating about not being lighter the day after a fast! I don’t have scales as mine are broken but 5:2 has always worked well for quickish inch loss for me (not immediate but better than the many many other fad diets I’ve done) so am resisting buying more but when they DID work, weighing in after an FD was the greatest pleasure.

really looking forward to an ice cold glass of Sancerre later. Happy Friday!
