Fasting / 5:2 diet

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Damn it Harriet! I feel for you. At least you're brave enough to weigh yourself! I find it too emotionally disturbing. I just a coward and sit waiting for my clothes to become looser and then I know I'm moving somewhere in the right (or wrong) direction.

Don't forget weight doesn't come off in a linear way, it comes off in fits and starts and I bet if you don't see it today, you'll see it next week instead.

Managed my 3 fasts last week with no difficulty, and had lost another 3lbs yesterday morning!! 😮😁

Have gone down with a vicious throat infection though, have had a high temp and feeling vile 😭 so not worrying much about fasting, just eating a bit here and there when I'm hungry.

Won't push the Monday fast if I still feel poorly, but see how I feel when I get there.

I am sort of checking in. This is exactly the sort of day that stops me posting as I probably should be fasting but don’t really want to but can’t tomorrow or Weds or probably Thursday so I have to but don’t fancy it! But I need to as the rest of the week is so sociable.

anyway. I’ll report back on how it goes!

I overate yesterday and today and tomorrow we're my only realistic options this week, but my schedule has changed a little for today and I'm really tired and quite pissed off about a few things
However, I'm trying to harness the power of that mental clarity that some people say comes with fasting. I've had coffee with soya milk and some black coffee. (Will have lots of water- boring)
Might have some raw veggies while family eats their lovely dinner
Push on through x

I'm not fasting today or tomorrow. It's just too much in the heat! But we will be eating salads and cold food and not going crazy. Back on it once the freak weather has subsided....

I'm hopefully only doing one day in the office this week due to the heat (Wednesday) and it's crazy busy with meetings so that'll be a fast day. Not sure if I'll fast on Tuesday as I do find it hard at home - I might try 16:8 and try to get a mini FD instead, and maybe the same on Thursday or Friday.

Good luck to anyone who is trying a FD in this weather 😰

Still feeling pretty rubbish here 🤒 and my appetite has totally tanked so I don't feel like eating a thing. Will carry on fasting today as long as I feel okay with it - my body does NOT seem to want food right now so no point in making myself eat!

Hope everyone's doing okay with the heat 🌡️ I'm grateful that most of our rooms downstairs stay pretty cool (we spend 10 months out of 12 complaining that it's cold 🤣).

Hopping back into thread after i lapsed for a month or so! Paying the price now and feel unhealthy and flabby. Too scared to weigh but feel ready to get back on it now. Hope everyone is ok and coping in the heat. Am going to read thread properly now.

Kitchen closed at 508 and also managed 11,000 steps today in spite of the heat.
Have also decided against B2B today, was feeling quite light headed earlier. Might do B2B Wednesday-Thursday instead.

I don't know how many calories I've consumed
A couple of coffees with soya milk, water, black coffee and a salad of spinach with fennel, beetroot, half a can of chickpeas. Some red onion and a church of raw courgette

I've basically ended up doing a 'modified fast' today... Felt very woozy and a bit off this afternoon, so had a very small meal - some lovely dahl and roasted aubergine and a bit of cheese. Didn't count calories but pretty sure it would be low enough to be a modified fast day!

Will probably do OMAD tomorrow, it just feels too hot to push through a fast especially when I'm already not feeling 100% 😵

Well done to everyone else who's fasted today.

Semi successful. I did a 45 min cardio workout this morning which makes me rampantly starving usually and so I am, but it’s a bit over what I planned. However, I’m eating exactly what I like tomorrow and am very pleased with not falling in to the wine this evening as I dithered hard over that.

my Wednesday socialising has been moved because of Covid so I might be able to do FD 2 then which would be really good.
