Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Cake won out, but I did have a small slice and a few chips. I calculate about 350 so far. Feel surprisingly non-starving, maybe the cake is more filling than I expected. Maybe some cheese and crackers to round up to 650-ish

EatYourFive · 12/07/2022 20:21

Kitchen closed at 686 here, those cold sugary drinks are hard to resist on days like these!

incognitodorrito · 12/07/2022 20:44

696 cals here ! Well done everyone !

SydneyCarton · 12/07/2022 21:19

Kitchen closed on 800, bit higher than usual but I expected it today with the birthday cake etc. will try to pull it back tomorrow and maybe do 16:8 on Friday (depending on what the scales say on Thursday 🤣). Well done everyone!

incognitodorrito · 12/07/2022 21:24

@SydneyCarton 800 AND cake is quite an achievement! What’s your typical 16:8 windows like if you don’t mind me asking ? What meals do you skip ? So many questions, I’d like to try it.

harriethoyle · 12/07/2022 22:03

Excellent FDs everyone! Good work 👏👏👏

@incognitodorrito I've added a few 16:8s in. I just skip breakfast and don't eat till at least 12 which gives me a 12-8 or 1-9 window. It's pretty easy once you're in a routine unless you're hungover 😂

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 12/07/2022 22:13

@incognitodorrito I skip breakfast and usually have my eating window 1-9, mainly because bedtime with three small-ish children can take its time and if I did 12-8 I’d starve 🤣. I usually come in with about a 400 calorie deficit if I track on MFP

sweetgingercat · 12/07/2022 22:29

Kitchen closed at 504ish here. Glad everyone made it through our first B2B of the week. I'm back on Thursday for another, if anyone else is around? Good luck Weds fasters too!

mumlikeaboss · 12/07/2022 22:35

Closed my kitchen at 7pm (NFD) and tomorrow's a full fast until Thursday 🤩

sweetgingercat · 13/07/2022 07:54

Hi @mumlikeaboss welcome to the thread! I'm intrigued by your ADF (I had to look it up!). I fast three days a week, but one B2B early in the week and then another day later. So I guess with ADF you come out at 3.5 days a week? Do you find it easy? Does it work with your lifestyle (I think I and my family would find it very difficult if I fasted at weekends). And what can you eat/drink on a full fast? I am doing 600 on B2B and 500 on the other fast day. I have never done a full fast monty. Do you find it difficult? On a non fast day what are your eating hours? And how much have you lost so far? (Lots of questions, sorry!)

harriethoyle · 13/07/2022 08:39

@sweetgingercat I'm with you on Thursday for 3rd FD of the week 😊

sweetgingercat · 13/07/2022 09:32

Excellent @harriethoyle

mumlikeaboss · 13/07/2022 11:55

@sweetgingercat no worries, lol... I'll answer best as I can!

I've been doing IF since November 2020 but have only just started getting into the 5:2 / 4:3 / ADF methods... So don't have tonnes of experience yet!

I guess ADF is a little misleading, I really do 4:3 within a week... I alternate fasting days and "up" days from Monday to Saturday, then on Sundays I go back to the eating window approach like the 16:8 method (only my window is usually much smaller than 8 hours).

So I've been fasting on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and having my up days on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Sunday it usually works to have a really big meal between lunchtime and mid afternoon. That way I don't have to miss out on family meals or social occasions on the weekends.

Before getting into ADF / 4:3 I was mostly doing 16:8 or OMAD and quite often had my one meal at lunchtime - so my family got used to me not eating at dinnertime and I don't think they mind at all. I still get their meal and sit with them while they eat.

I do a complete fast on the fast days - just black coffee and water - because I don't think I could stick to 500 cals once I start eating 😂

I'm about 55lbs (4 stone ish) down since I started IF... Have been plateaued (or maintaining!!) for months now and still have another 40-50lbs I'd like to lose, hence I decided to switch it up and do some full-day fasts. After the first week of 4:3 I'd lost about 3lbs 🤩🤩 so I'm hoping I can stick with it for a bit!

It really doesn't feel that difficult... But having done IF for 18 months or more, I think my body is well adjusted and can easily switch over to fat-burning which means I don't get super hungry on my fast days. The evenings are probably the hardest just because I want to boredom eat 🤣 but can usually find something to distract me!

So far I haven't restricted eating hours at all on the NFDs - so it has ended up between 8-12 hours depending on what's going on that day.

Phew, sorry for the novel 😂 hope I answered everything!

CrabPuff · 13/07/2022 14:34

Checking in for today. I had so many good intentions for weeks but having upped my exercise a lot of them fell by the wayside due to extreme cardio induced hunger.

so - today should work out around 550 in theory. I’m not sure when my next FD is - possibly Saturday or Sunday as I have the place to myself with no temptations.

also have listened to “that” podcast about unprocessed food and now making practically everything from scratch which is a bit time consuming. Lots of tales of how natural weight loss occurs from that but 5:2 definitely works and I didn’t eat that much processed stuff anyway. Things like bread and mayonnaise and chocolate but can make those (not the chocolate maybe…) fairly easily.

SydneyCarton · 13/07/2022 15:47

Day 2 of b2b and going OK, water and tea to keep me going. People were handing out free cans of 0 calorie flavoured fizzy water at the station and as I walked to work I could see loads of opened cans on the pavement where people had taken one swig, realised how gross it was and hastily put it down Grin. Probably pizza and salad for dinner and a tiny sliver of the birthday cake if it hasn't melted or gone rancid 🤔

I also want to listen to the UPF podcast@CrabPuff - didn't they also do a documentary on it? I tried to search for it last night but just kept getting episodes of Operation Ouch! I love homemade bread but I don't have a bread maker or stand mixer so it's got to be hand kneaded which is a bit of a faff. I also made crumpets years ago, which was not as difficult as I thought it would be, just a lot of waiting, and they were so fresh tasting and delicious.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 13/07/2022 16:43

On bbc sounds sydney - but omg the endless close-up crunching noises from Xand! Aaargh!

CrabPuff · 13/07/2022 18:21

The podcast is called “a Thorough Examination” - I listened to it on a long car journey and started looking at the back of packets straight away!

my pork medallion is in the oven and then I’m going to have to find something very absorbing to do as I’m quite hungry. But I can have what I want tomorrow, as I keep reminding myself..

CrabPuff · 13/07/2022 18:26

I don’t have a breadmaker as there is limited space in an already very full kitchen. Not space for an air fryer sadly. I quite like the hand kneading though. Therapeutic. I have two small loaf tins and one loaf goes in the freezer usually for when the first one is finished.

I don’t think my particular recipe works for soldiers or scrambled egg so I’m going to find a lighter recipe that can be toasted just for when only scrambled eggs on toast will do!

harriethoyle · 13/07/2022 18:52

@CrabPuff @SydneyCarton I have a feeling Nigella has a good no knead bread...

Coming up 37 hours into my 2nd fast of the week! 😁

Out on a school trip with DS today so not sure when I'll get a chance to break my fast... Will probably end up being 42 hours or so.

Feel amazing, and have lost a couple of cm off my waist in just a few days 😮

mumlikeaboss · 14/07/2022 08:03

@SydneyCarton zero calorie flavoured stuff is just so vile. I used to drink a lot of it in my old WW days, but since starting fasting and going back to eating REAL foods instead of dieting, it's amazing how I've totally lost my taste for all the fake stuff!

CrabPuff · 14/07/2022 08:18

thanks Harriethoyle - an enjoyable
browse of the Nigella website is about to commence! Could be dangerous.

I think it’s an NFD today but will see - I have Cajun chicken breasts in the fridge that need eating so would make sense to squash them into a B2B but who knows if I have the willpower!

SydneyCarton · 14/07/2022 08:26

@mumlikeaboss I’d much rather have fat coke occasionally than Diet Coke every day! Coke Zero isn’t too bad though. I do have a sneaky fondness for Muller banana yoghurt corners, but I think if I were to have one it would taste thin and insipid.

Weighed in today after my b2b hoping for something better than last week’s 0.2 of a pound and have (apparently) lost 3 pounds! 141.8 down to 138.8 pounds. Very pleased to have got under ten stone! I think I’ll carry on for the rest of the month to give me some wiggle room for August as I have three weeks off then and I can’t see myself sticking to 5:2 then…

harriethoyle · 14/07/2022 09:01

Hurray @SydneyCarton that's a great loss!

I'm signing in for my 3rd FD of the week. I think I'm joining @sweetgingercat . Anyone else with us?

mumlikeaboss · 14/07/2022 09:34

@SydneyCarton 🥳 that's awesome

And yes give me an occasional 'proper' Coke rather than frequent diet Coke!! 😁
