Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Bust my fast day yesterday unfortunately when I realised that both my partner and child were at home for the day. So I'm fasting today instead and not feeling terribly motivated!

Partly its because it's coming up to the summer holidays and I've realised I'm going to find it incredibly difficult to look after DS and fast at the same time.

On the plus side I've discovered that Nature Valley do a sweet and salty nut bar with chocolate which is only 137 cals and it tastes pretty delicious.

harriethoyle · 09/07/2022 08:43

@sweetgingercat I absolutely love the nature valley bars. They're delicious 🤤 I like the honey and oats one.

I'm really headachey this morning. DH has pointed out the only liquid I drank. yesterday was wine 😂 so I'm going to buy a reusable water bottle to fill up and drink at work going forward.

Bbq tonight because it's glorious weather. Happy Saturday everyone 😁

Hello, signing in because today is such a nightmare that I may as well fast and get it over with. Currently trying to shoo the kids out the door so I can get tidying for some viewings as our house is on the market. I’m expecting a lot of coffee to be consumed, hopefully that fresh coffee smell really does it for people Grin

mumlikeaboss · 09/07/2022 18:41

Hello everyone!

I don't really use mumsnet a lot but was googling ADF and came across a bunch of old threads and then this one 😁😁

I've been doing fasting 20 months or so - mostly just playing around with daily eating windows (anything from 16:8 to 23:1) but a week ago I decided to try ADF and so far I love it.

Interested to know, does anyone on here do a full fast on the fast days, rather than having 500-800 calories?

TheWayTheLightFalls · 10/07/2022 07:51

Welcome mum! I've never tried that. Interested to hear if others have.

68.7kg this morning, which is one perk to feeling woefully ill and simultaneously too stressed to eat.

Badlifeday · 10/07/2022 13:22

I do a "full" fast, clean according to fasting terminology - only black coffee/tea/water on fast days, nothing flavoured or with sweetener. Obviously there are other ways to fast!
Not fasting right now as I am on holiday - will pick it up as soon I'm back

mumlikeaboss · 10/07/2022 18:36

@Badlifeday that's the only way I've ever done it, which is easy enough for a daily fast but feels slightly more challenging for a 40-hour one especially when the family are all eating dinner!

I have given some thought to trying the 500 calorie version but feel like that would only make me even hungrier... I like to eat until I'm full, and a small meal usually just wakes up my appetite and makes me want more and more 🙈

I'm interested if anyone has tried both ways and if so which they prefer?

harriethoyle · 11/07/2022 08:15

Morning all, signing in for the usual b2b...anyone with me today?

EatYourFive · 11/07/2022 09:57

@harriethoyle yes I'm in, doing a b2b too!! Hoping the heat will help suppress my appetite today!

harriethoyle · 11/07/2022 10:10

@EatYourFive it supresses my appetite but makes me want to drink very cold wine...! 😂

incognitodorrito · 11/07/2022 10:31

I broke up with fasting last week as i just didn’t feel like it, tried to maintain my 20 % off TDEE calories and hit the gym daily. Didn’t go well as we went out to dinner on two of those nights. Because of the (near) daily gym visits I also ate like a horse as I mainly do body building ! I’ve also caught covid do working from home in my PJs today and hoping it’s the variant that doesn’t like carbs and sugar this time round.

EatYourFive · 11/07/2022 10:47

@harriethoyle so true, I have certainly had my share of cold wine (and beer and cider!) since my last fast day, need to fast just to detox! 😄
@incognitodorrito sorry to hear you have covid, seems to be rife again!! DH tested positive a couple of weeks ago and is still not recovered, somehow the kids and I have managed to evade it this time.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 11/07/2022 13:02

Hi @harriethoyle I'm going to do a single which I hate but have so much on this week

EatYourFive · 11/07/2022 19:09

Kitchen closing at 550 tonight. Not felt that hungry today and even managed a small run this evening but could really use an ice cold glass of wine right now...Oh well, diluted apple juice have to do.

harriethoyle · 11/07/2022 19:45

Kitchen closed here on 455 because I forgot to buy sides to go with my fishcake 🙄 gives me more to play with tomorrow, I suppose!

incognitodorrito · 11/07/2022 22:14

Kitchen closed at 536 cals, wasn’t too tricky getting back into FDs, thank covid 🙌

sweetgingercat · 12/07/2022 00:46

Hi all, kitchen closed at 517 tonight. Back again tomorrow. The heat definitely helps!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 12/07/2022 05:01

Day 1 of a b2b here, although it is my youngest's birthday today so it might all go to pot once the chocolate cake comes out later. Very admiring of those who are running in this heat - I am struggling with motivation, although I am walking quite a bit. I haven't even managed 5K this month, as Strava keeps reminding me Blush

harriethoyle · 12/07/2022 18:46

Happy birthday to mini @SydneyCarton you're a hero if you resist 🎂!

Kitchen closing here on 784: bit higher than I'd hoped but yesterday's 455 means 1239 for my b2b.

Kitchen closed. Ready meal at 363 cals for lunch, orange lolly 63 cals, salad with tandoori chicken pieces (should've been around 200, not sure). And lots of coffee. Phew! Good luck Weds crew.
