Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

I really rate the slimwell ready meals @incognitodorrito the portions are massive and the calories low! I tend to get two meals out of one portion. The chicken tikka masala is good mixed with a tin of chickpeas and makes two portions too.

Well done Monday fasters - I'm on a b2b day 1 and kitchen closed on 545
Might have to have another rich tea as I'm starving

EatYourFive · 27/06/2022 20:57

Kitchen closed at around 260. Skipped dinner as not fasting tomorrow.
Well done today's fasters!

harriethoyle · 27/06/2022 21:16

Well done Monday crew! I'll see some of you tomorrow for a b2b 😊

Kitchen closed on 696 on day 1 of a b2b, bit higher than I wanted but we have eclairs that need eating Blush. Had a chicken salad for my main meal so still reasonably healthy

TheWayTheLightFalls · 28/06/2022 06:40

Morning! Brew

Off to work. Black coffee in hand. Good luck Tuesday fasters.

Badlifeday · 28/06/2022 07:57

Morning, you fasting today? I'm trying to pretend my cup of tea is a big plate of toast 😃

harriethoyle · 28/06/2022 08:29

Morning @Badlifeday .I'm with you today! Black coffee consumed, tiny sandwich packed 🙄 off to work hoping to be busy...

Badlifeday · 28/06/2022 11:15

I'm off today and I normally punctuate my day with morning snack/lunch etc - I'm finding it very hard to get excited about having a break to have another cup of tea or drink of water.

SydneyCarton · 28/06/2022 11:50

Day 2 of b2b here, and actually not too bad - I have meetings today which start at 12.30 and go all the way through to 4.30, so will be too busy to eat 😬.Colleagues have brought some chocs in from holidays and for our team meeting later and I am sitting right by them trying to focus on my screen! Not sure what dinner will be, possibly something based around eggs as I have a load which need using up 🥚

incognitodorrito · 28/06/2022 11:59

Day 2 B2B - sat at work fantasising about the pie I’ll be making tomorrow.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 28/06/2022 13:50

Hello b2bs
Strong for day 2 here - looking forward to an enormous salad later

harriethoyle · 28/06/2022 14:31

I've got the same bbq chicken, salad and wrap for tea later that I had today... I've a zoom meeting at 6.30 and I am torn between eating before but maybe feeling hungry before bed and waiting til after the zoom and being STARVING through it! managed to stoically resist biscuits at communal lunch...

I've got veda toast lined up for breakfast tomorrow, and I'm supposed to be hosting my little brother for tea with request for spag bol and garlic bread which suits me just fine!

Kitchen closed on 464 yesterday and I’m very hungry get today. Trying to hold back…

harriethoyle · 28/06/2022 17:07

Don't forget @sweetgingercat you can use the rest of your collective b2b cals today after 500 - so up to 800 cals if you need a snack!

harriethoyle · 28/06/2022 18:15

Kitchen closed on 617 which gives c. 1170 for the two days. Will try not to have a bedtime snack later but I am hungry today and couldn't hold out till after my 6.30pm zoom... You know when the dog's kibble is looking appetising, it's time to eat! 😜

Well done on resisting the biscuits harriet! I was tortured by chocolates and bloody Pringles all through our team meeting but stuck it out and even in the pub afterwards I just had an orange juice 🧃Probably more calorific than I think but I needed the social chitchat, it’s been too long since we all met face to face.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 28/06/2022 18:39

Kitchen closed here. Black coffee, grilled chicken salad for lunch with lemon juice and salt instead of a proper dressing; and a very spicy lentil dhal/stew thing with an egg for dinner.

harriethoyle · 28/06/2022 20:35

That's VERY virtuous @SydneyCarton!

Have you got a recipe for your dal @TheWayTheLightFalls ? It sounds gorgeous and I want a couple of more fast day recipes to add to the usual rotation so I don't get bored... The Elly Pear lentil/courgette dal is very good if you like that style of food.

OP posts:
TheWayTheLightFalls · 28/06/2022 20:50

It was a bit improvised harriet but basically fry onions and garlic on a low heat until translucent (I used a drop of oil and lots of water - not v authentic), then add chopped chillies, curry powder, stir and leave to cook for a minute, then add rinsed split lentils, water and a stock cube. Not authentic in the slightest but very tasty. If you’re more organised than me you’d likely add some chopped toms along with the chillies.

SydneyCarton · 28/06/2022 22:17

Finished on 608, ended up nearly falling asleep when putting DS down and just opted for tea and toast, the last of his porridge and the last eclair!

dal sounds good @TheWayTheLightFalls , I saw some Instagram recipe the other day making a sort of lentil pancake/wrap thing which looked like something good for a FD 🤔

harriethoyle · 29/06/2022 07:37

Breakfast was soooo good 😊 and back to my pre-weekend weight with another FD to go tomorrow. Love this way of life!

Good morning!
Day 1 b2b for me, anyone else fasting today?

SydneyCarton · 29/06/2022 09:37

Weighed myself for the first time since (re) starting 5:2 - I was 10st 7 in January when I had just begun 16:8, but I know I have gone up and down since then, so was hoping for anything less than that. Amazed to see 10st 2 on the scales! Weighed myself three times just to be sure, but I am very pleased with that, even though it's knocked 60 cals off my TDEE Grin

10st is my next target, which I'm hoping to hit by the start of August - 0.5 lb a week will do me as I don't have a lot to lose and I want to take it steady, but if I do lose more that's a bonus as it'll insulate me against too much holiday weight gain!

harriethoyle · 29/06/2022 09:58

Fabulous @SydneyCarton - slow and steady wins the race!

@EatYourFive I'll be joining you tomorrow 🙂
