Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

My DH is very annoying like that on FDs... made himself two rounds of buttered toast on Monday night! 🙄

Hi @harriethoyle I am joining you and fasting today. I've had an egg and a cup of tea and a little dish of kimchi so far. How is it going for you?

Yesterday I found an old pair of jeans stuffed at the back of my drawer. I can't even remember buying them so I obviously haven't been able to wear them for several years. It was such a pleasure to put them on and find they fit me!

harriethoyle · 23/06/2022 19:45

I've failed miserably @sweetgingercat ! Forgot my FD compliant sandwich and so ended up having a jacket potato and a flapjack (or two) in the airport lounge 😂🙈 at least I managed an IF clutches at straws

sweetgingercat · 23/06/2022 23:40

Blimey @harriethoyle I'm impressed that you did an FD when travelling! That’s more than I could manage! Good on you! There’s always next week, that’s the beauty of 5:2.

SydneyCarton · 24/06/2022 06:48

Went for a run yesterday morning after fasting on Wednesday and found I was absolutely dragging myself around 😩 no energy at all and much slower than usual (not that I’m especially fast normally!). Don’t know if it was the humidity or the reduced food intake from the day before; has anyone else noticed this?

harriethoyle · 24/06/2022 07:43

Thankfully it was 3rd FD of the week @sweetgingercat so not too catastrophic... I'll IF today too.

@SydneyCarton I find the humidity really slows me down. FDs not so much although exercising on day 2 of a b2b is tough!

On a Friday fast - my third of week - as I have got a big work thing tomorrow. Bored and hungry - will have a black coffee soon

Badlifeday · 24/06/2022 09:54

It's odd when we look forward to a plain coffee so much (I always had to have a biscuit with mine!)
Ive managed a supermarket shop this morning (fasting) without too much bother and even bought something nice to have for lunch tomorrow - on a normal diet I would be thinking "no I can't have a panini" at all whereas now I'm thinking "I can have a panini tomorrow" - which really helps, for me.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 24/06/2022 18:42

Well done @Badlifeday - sounds like you have really done well today
Kitchen closed at 530- have been very physical so pleased with that
Pancakes tomorrow

SydneyCarton · 25/06/2022 06:58

Thanks harriet ; I’ve run on and off for years (mostly off, though I credit lockdown for getting me into it properly at last!) and have done 5:2 before, but I haven’t been a runner who does 5:2! It looks cooler today so hopefully I’ll have a better run later but yes, the humidity is just crushing.

I’m in awe of @Badlifeday doing a supermarket shop while fasting 👏🏻, I can hardly bear to amend my online grocery order on a FD 🤣

TheWayTheLightFalls · 25/06/2022 18:18

Signing in, early even Grin. I ate lunch at 1ish and then started my fast, aiming to see it through until Monday morning.

Badlifeday · 26/06/2022 10:34

That's impressive @TheWayTheLightFalls I'm fasting today too but I find I eat up till the wire the night before!
have just had a pot of tea, pleasant start to the day.

harriethoyle · 26/06/2022 16:18

I'm always VERY impressed by Sunday fasters 😊

Anyone joining me for a far more civilised Monday fast tomorrow?!

OP posts:
TheWayTheLightFalls · 26/06/2022 18:29

Thanks harriet. Not me Grin!

All ok here. Had a pile of grilled broccoli, toms, an egg and a meatball (random) for lunch, then shirataki noodles with more veg for dinner. Two black coffees, some Diet Coke. Back Tuesday.

Badlifeday · 26/06/2022 19:15

Do any of you use fasting salts or any other kind of electrolytes when you're fasting? I have some, but not sure if they make me feel better or worse!
good thing about a Sunday fast is I don't have to face Monday without food Grin
I have officially lost a stone now (am soo overweight, so relatively easy to lose) and I have previous for finding it hard to stay motivated at this point. Still seem to be doing ok, though am definitely feeling the hunger today!

harriethoyle · 26/06/2022 20:25

See you Tuesday @TheWayTheLightFalls 😊 a stone is fab @Badlifeday well done!

OP posts:
incognitodorrito · 27/06/2022 07:52

@Badlifeday a stone is huge ! Well done. I’m on it today and tomorrow. Lots of black coffee, two boiled eggs, shirataki noodles, prawns, steamed broccoli and Diet Coke on the menu today. Good luck fellow fasters !

incognitodorrito · 27/06/2022 07:56

Ps has anyone tried to just completely fast, with just water on a regular, weekly basis ? Don’t think I could manage it but just wondering what it’s like ?

harriethoyle · 27/06/2022 08:44

Same @incognitodorrito . We can cheer lead each other 😊 I'm currently on black coffee and have tuna for lunch, and a chicken and chickpea curry for tea

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 27/06/2022 09:13

Day 1 of a b2b for me, water and a cup of tea so far. Will try and have at least one black coffee at work although I still struggle with the taste (love the smell tho 🤔). There’s some cold chicken in the fridge which needs eating so I might do a chicken salad for dinner 😋

sweetgingercat · 27/06/2022 11:33

Day 1 for b2b for me too! Just about to have an egg and some kimchi. Have a great day fellow fasters!

harriethoyle · 27/06/2022 11:59

Happy Monday @sweetgingercat and @SydneyCarton 😄

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 27/06/2022 13:26

Hello everyone! I'm also fasting today but have a work lunch tomorrow so no b2b. May do further two fast days this week (Wednesday & Thursday) if I can motivate myself.
Good luck today!

harriethoyle · 27/06/2022 18:30

Kitchen closing here on 551. If anyone has an Aldi near them, I had half of their slimwell bbq chicken ready meal with lettuce, jalapenos and a touch of garlic sauce. Came in around 340 cals for dinner and was really filling.

OP posts:
incognitodorrito · 27/06/2022 18:46

Thats a very decent sounding meal for little calories so will try that @harriethoyle - getting more than a little bored with prawns and cottage cheese combos. Kitchen closing here at 605 cals, dog walk then gym then bed for me tonight.
