Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Great work @SydneyCarton, that 10st is certainly looking achievable!

@harriethoyle excellent, looking forward to seeing you here tomorrow! Feeling quite hungry today, certainly in comparison to Monday.

sweetgingercat · 30/06/2022 00:32

Wow made it yesterday (and thanks for your reminder that I could use up some excess calories from the day before @harriethoyle!

I felt really hungry today (and ate too many pieces of toast and biscuits) and now I'm suffering from a lot of wind because I also ate too much fermented kimchi! Bloody FOOD!

Well done Sydney, the slower you lose the more you are likely to keep it off, I think.

We're going out to supper tomorrow night, so I'll come back for another fast on Friday. Good luck tomorrow everyone who is fasting.

EatYourFive · 30/06/2022 07:29

I finished at 600 yesterday and doing day 2 b2b today, day 3 overall this week.

Weighed myself this morning, 61.1 kg so not the lowest ever yet (got to 60.3 kg early June before my fasting regime was interrupted by some intense work travel) but tantalisingly close to 60 kg.. Will be magical if the scales ever dip below 60 kg, not seen that since my 20s (I'm in my 40s).

Well done @sweetgingercat, so easy to overdo it after b2b! I try to limit my post-b2b breakfast to one slice of bread but it takes some willpower as the bread usually tastes amazing!

@harriethoyle you're fasting today as well? Anyone else? Good luck anyway!

harriethoyle · 30/06/2022 07:58

Well done @sweetgingercat !

Yes @EatYourFive I'm with you today, 3rd FD of the week. A tiny pasta salad for lunch coming in at c.300 cals because I'm going back to running (stumbling, more like) club tonight and I won't have time to eat beforehand. Then fishcake for tea. c.550 for the day if all goes well...

Good luck!

Thanks harriet, sweetgingercat and EatYourFive - seeing those numbers definitely gives you the incentive to carry on!

Impressed by people doing three FDs this week, that is dedication - have a great day everyone Smile

harriethoyle · 30/06/2022 16:54

I'm HUNGRY today but I've got running club at 6.30 😭 roll on my 7.30 fishcake!

EatYourFive · 30/06/2022 19:29

Me too @harriethoyle, been a struggle today. Hope you enjoyed your running club!
Kitchen closed at 600 here. Have been planning tomorrow's breakfast (bagel and fried egg) since midday..

harriethoyle · 30/06/2022 19:32

@EatYourFive the oven is on and it's 20 minutes til fishcake time 😁 roll on brekkie..!

EatYourFive · 30/06/2022 19:51

Yay! How was your run? I find they can be a struggle on fast days.

harriethoyle · 30/06/2022 19:56

It's just a c25k group so pretty easy! We've just restarted after a hiatus so taking it slow...

Kitchen closing on 641 after I miscalculated my pasta salad but I don't think I could have coped on less 😂

EatYourFive · 30/06/2022 20:37

That sounds lovely! I've been thinking of joining our local this mum runs group, maybe this winter when it gets too dark to run in the park in the evenings by myself.
Never kind the extra calories, you need some carbs for running! 😊

harriethoyle · 30/06/2022 20:39

@EatYourFive I hate winter running. I'm definitely a seasonal light weight!

I've FINALLY broken the 70kg barrier... 69.8kg this morning! 💥💥💥

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 01/07/2022 07:37

Woohoo @harriethoyle, that's amazing well done!!!! Remind me what your weight was when you first started intermittent fasting?

I was 60.6 kg this morning, hoping to see sub-60 in the next couple of weeks! Size 12 clothes are a bit looser now but not sure I'm quite there yet for size 10.

harriethoyle · 01/07/2022 07:57

81kg when I started although I've been mainly in the mid 70s for the last year. My MFP weight record looks like something from the city traders floor 😂 I'm definitely motivated by clothing size too... just had to swap a size 12 frock for a 10 which is always pleasing! And actually @EatYourFive the fact we're almost 10kg different in weight but wearing same clothing size is a good reminder for us all not to get too hung up on the scales!

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 01/07/2022 08:21

@harriethoyle My weight chart is very similar! Weighed 71 kg in April last year, went down to 65-66kg last summer the first time I was fasting but stopped in August and went back to ~70 kg by November. Restarted fasting end of November and now close to 10 kg loss (there's been breaks in between for holidays, work travel and a bad case of covid).

You're so right about not being too obsessed about weight alone. I don't like BMI that much either as it's not that reliable but mine is 23.1 at the moment so can definitely still afford to lose more. That's great news about the size 10 frock!! This week I wore some size 12 trousers to work for the first time having bought them in March 2020. Have not been able to fit in them since and they have been at the back of my wardrobe for months, but when I tried them on this week they were actually a bit loose! 😊

ThunderstomsAreComing · 01/07/2022 08:45

Hi all,

Just browsing this out of interest - I was on the first thread back in 2012, NC since then. I was almost 60, heading into "obese" (again!) and determined to not be that by my birthday.

5:2 really worked for me - so long as I did the fast days on busy days - when I was travelling or out and about a lot (still working then) I went from almost 12 st to 9st 4lb. - which turned out to be too low for me to maintain without feeling I was on "a diet" all the time. I've found 10st is perfect for me. Pretty standard size 12 in most clothes. I have rarely varied by more than a few pounds either side of that.

The thing is I now genuinely do eat what ever I want - but what I want to eat has shifted. I do 16:8 as a lifestyle - but have had a friend staying so had some lovely breakfasts as a treat, went out for meals, drank wine, ate chocolate .... never gave it a thought. A week later I'm back to 10st from 10st 2lb with no real effort.

I struggled with weight my whole life up to that point - but 5:2 was like finally discovering a reset button where I could eat like normal people. It really was a game changer for me, and I'm sure it will be for many of you. It took a while for the mindset change to kick in, but these days I'm in total control of my weight without ever worrying about it or feeling I'm denying myself anything - oh and we had fish and chips too when my friend was here, just a lovely treat and not a bit of guilt.

Stick with it, it really does work!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 01/07/2022 09:08

That's lovely to read thunderstorms.

Harriet that's me too - we're about the same weight now with approx. the same starting weight. I've been bouncing either side of 70kg for ages now, since 2 holidays earlier this year. I've finally moved the last baby out of my bedroom and am hoping better sleep will help too.

harriethoyle · 01/07/2022 09:17

@ThunderstomsAreComing I could have written this myself! It's such a RELIEF after years of calorie counting, scale obsessing, food coming, points totalling to have found a way of life that works without having to think about it too much...

@TheWayTheLightFallshave you a target in mind? Initially I wanted to get to 70kg and now I'm thinking 67-ish to give myself holiday wriggle room... my sleep is TERRIBLE. I've just resurrected my fitbit and each night this week has been progressively worse 😂 it's one reason I wanted to get back into scheduled exercise because I figure it must help...

@harriethoyle 65kg would see me in proper size 10 clothes but I don't think it's realistic/sustainable - I think 67 is about right for me too. In 2020 I hit 62-ish kg and looked amazing but that was pure stress-induced meltdown due to covid, family difficulties etc - wouldn't wish it on anyone. I then got pregnant with twins and am now losing the baby weight again - was at 83kg when I rejoined the thread so getting there. I am absolutely over the 70kg hokey pokey however! I feel like I'm losing and regaining the same kg.

harriethoyle · 01/07/2022 14:00

@TheWayTheLightFalls YES I hear you on the 70kg yoyo..!! Which I will be back to on Monday but I am hoping to shave off a bit more next week and so on until I am doing the 69kg yoyo and the 68kg yoyo and so on...!! 😄

Signing in! Haven’t planned anything for today but the fridge is full of broccoli Smile.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 03/07/2022 19:04

Me again, keeping the lights on on Sundays Grin. Had this for lunch with broccoli on the side (it was delicious!), then a small portion of bolognese (just the sauce/meat without pasta), served with chargrilled broccoli with garlic and lemon, and a salad.

I'm off to garden so I don't raid the cookie jar.

See you all on Tues!
