Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Impressed at the b2bs!! I managed 35 hours, before breakfast today.
I've had a terrible headache - is this related do you think? I've friends with covid so that was my first thought but tests are negative. I've lost another pound so this does work, but I can't have headaches like this 🤕

sweetgingercat · 21/06/2022 13:43

@Badlifeday I also got headaches in the beginning. Someone on here suggested it was lack of salts so I used to have a hot water with a squeeze of lemon or lime and a pinch of salt in to start off the day. That definitely helped with headaches and a feeling of shakiness.

sweetgingercat · 21/06/2022 13:45

Dropping in for second B2B today. Kitchen closed last night at 523 which I was happy with. I discovered that blueberries are quite low cal - 53 calories per 100 grams. I had 50g last night and they were delicious!

Good luck everyone on the second B2B!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 21/06/2022 14:16

With you @sweetgingercat

absolutelyknackeredcow · 21/06/2022 14:16

Come on @EatYourFive

TheWayTheLightFalls · 21/06/2022 14:49

Hello, late check in but going well so far - grilled veg and an egg for lunch, two black coffees, Diet Coke.

I've had a terrible headache - is this related do you think? I've friends with covid so that was my first thought but tests are negative. I've lost another pound so this does work, but I can't have headaches like this

@Badlifeday I agree with others - water, water + salts or those effervescent vitamin things (like Berocca) should do it. Lots more water, in my case. Remember that most foods have water in them, so you're not only eating less but taking in less liquid.

sweetgingercat · 21/06/2022 15:02

@absolutelyknackeredcow and @EatYourFive and @TheWayTheLightFalls It's mid afternoon, we've almost done it!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 21/06/2022 15:12

Keep on it everyone Grin

incognitodorrito · 21/06/2022 18:46

Closing kitchen & this weeks B2B at 638 cals average for today & yesterday. I’m finding my FDs less tricky now, but really do need to focus focus focus on not overdoing it though for the rest of the week. I’ve got a lot of less than 500 cal meals in from a local nutritionist so these will be my dinners for the rest of week. I’m also implementing a biscuit ban !

TheWayTheLightFalls · 21/06/2022 20:39

Done! Done about five hours ago, but today was such a blur of work and child nonsense that I've only just sat down. Phew. Had a tuna salad for dinner, while wrangling said children.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 21/06/2022 20:43

Kitchen closed on day 2 at 650. Really happy with that especially as did 500 yesterday
Planning a mini Friday as have a special work thing Saturday

absolutelyknackeredcow · 21/06/2022 20:44

Some cracking results here !

EatYourFive · 21/06/2022 21:43

Yay day 2 b2b is done, kitchen closed at 540, I'm officially back in the game in spite of a stinking cold (covid test negative)!

Well done everyone, such great support here today! Off to bed now to dream of tomorrow's breakfast..

Oh and @Badlifeday I also had headaches when fasting for the first few weeks but it got better as the fasting also got easier. I have actually had a headache today, not sure if it's linked to not having done a b2b for a while or my head cold, or possibly both!

Badlifeday · 22/06/2022 00:25

Fasting again now and going to go for buckets of water and some salt 😀 Thank you all for the advice, much appreciated. I think I also need to get to sleep earlier too.

harriethoyle · 22/06/2022 07:58

Morning troops, well done on yesterday's FDs! Anyone with me today? Day 1 of a b2b and day 2 of this week x

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 22/06/2022 09:31

Good luck today@harriethoyle! No more fasting for me this week, was previously considering a FD tomorrow to catch up (was 1.2 kg above my record low weight from 3 weeks ago this morning) but my cold is worse today so don't think I can face it...

absolutelyknackeredcow · 22/06/2022 10:09

Slightly up on last week's low weight but still just about on target weight
Going to do a FD Friday to ensure I'm looking good for next week

sweetgingercat · 22/06/2022 10:43

Finally got a moment, kitchen closed on 659 yesterday. Great to hear everyone else’s results, it’s such a buzz when we do it all together!

harriet I’ll be back with you on Thursday, good luck today!

harriethoyle · 22/06/2022 11:37

Fabulous @absolutelyknackeredcow ! And no point setting yourself up to fail @EatYourFive . I'm feeling pretty strong so far... fuelled by black coffee!

SydneyCarton · 22/06/2022 13:56

FD 2 for me today and going OK so far, being in meetings for most of the day helps. I have been trying to stick to water and black coffee on FDs at least until after lunchtime, but my three year old woke me at 5.30 this morning, and there were toilet issues to deal with, so I needed the comfort of a proper cup of tea after that 😬. Have found it easier doing 2 separate FDs rather than a b2b this week, but the b2bs have not been as bad as I thought they might be

Badlifeday · 22/06/2022 20:22

Have had to break today's fast early as have had awful stomach pains since I got in from work and have had some cereal to see if that helps. Might make it wise instead of better, but felt I had to try something! Not having much luck this week!

SydneyCarton · 22/06/2022 20:27

Kitchen closed on 530; fishfinger wrap, couple of small apples and a Milk Tray chocolate (that last not strictly necessary but solo bedtime for my little darlings was somewhat trying….)

harriethoyle · 22/06/2022 22:24

Well done @SydneyCarton .kitchen closed here on 613, day 2 b2b tomorrow. Hope you feel better soon @Badlifeday

Anyone doing a Thursday fast with me? 🧐

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 23/06/2022 08:57

Thanks @harriethoyle well done for day 1! Unfortunately DP came home with chips from a new fish and chip shop that’s opened near us, so my total is probably closer to 750 Blush… Still a mini though, and I was pretty active yesterday so hopefully will balance out. Good luck to the Thursday fasters!
