Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

I also found it tricky yesterday after doing a b2b Tuesday and Wednesday - fell down a bit of a junk food rabbit hole, but also did quite a bit of walking with school pickups and drop offs at Brownies etc, plus a very sweaty and exhausting run, ugh. Today hasn't been so bad as I've been drinking loads of water to cope with the heat, but I've still been tracking with MFP. Not sure whether to track at the weekend or not 🤔

SydneyCarton · 17/06/2022 15:06

@TheWayTheLightFalls I have three young children also and haven't yet taken them all abroad - I think I'd come back the size of a house Grin

Just me eh? Grin Done! Black coffee for breakfast; broccoli and carrot stir fried with soy, garlic, chilli and ginger with a boiled egg for lunch, and this dhal type thing with a heap of lambs’ lettuce for dinner (was 180cals for a whole pouch). No idea of calories but should be low I think?

TheWayTheLightFalls · 19/06/2022 19:21

Oh, and an iced black coffee in there too. Good luck Monday crew!

Badlifeday · 19/06/2022 21:14

Have just clicked "start" on my fasting app. Have eaten too much this weekend, was away. Have planned out a proper every other day fast for the next two weeks, and will see where I am then.

CrabPuff · 20/06/2022 07:44

Checking in for the start of the week. I think my FDs are Tuesday and Thursday this week, though I prefer to get them over and done with. Keeping it healthy today anyway and big weekend of socialising coming up so plenty of time at the gym too)

harriethoyle · 20/06/2022 08:15

Morning gang. I'm checking in for b2b today and tomorrow then a single FD on Thursday 🤞

Morning everyone
B2b Mon and Tues and then a single or a mini on Friday
It's going to be fun

CheshireSplat · 20/06/2022 08:57

aaaaggghhhh!

st lost a long post. Grrrrr. B2B for me too today and tomorrow. First one for a few years.

CheshireSplat · 20/06/2022 09:04

My stupid fat fingers!!!

Lost a long post and then posted by accident.

In summary.

First b2b for years today and tomorrow.

Lost 1/2 lb from a disappointing weigh in last week and was birthday yesterday so that's not too bad.

But overall need to make more effort, 4 lbs down in 5 weeks. (I was 5lbs down after 3 weeks.) Every week there seems to be a different excuse to pig out at the weekend. Birthday yesterday, 4 days in London this weekend on holiday. Etc. Don't want to move to 3 FDs a week as that'll perpetuate the binge/famine cycle.

I know I'm the only one who can sort this. Need to keep going!!! And at least my disappointing weight now, was a normal weight a few weeks ago.

Quick question, how much do you all fluctuate in a week. This week I did FDs Monday and Wednesday, was 3 1/2 lbs heavier this morning than on Thursday (lightest Vs heaviest point).

EatYourFive · 20/06/2022 09:56

Hello, I'm back in the game finally. Last week was a disaster, my flight back home got cancelled so the work trip was longer than expected, therefore no fasting at all last week. Also have helped myself to a lot of cake, choc, wine, pasta.. you name it, so have some catching up to do.

Day 1 b2b today. @CheshireSplat my weight fluctuates a lot throughout the week, by 5 lbs or more at times. As long as the general long-term trend is downwards (it's not at the moment!) I'm happy.

harriethoyle · 20/06/2022 10:38

@CheshireSplat I'm exactly the same as @EatYourFive I can fluctuate by up to 3kgs! This morning I'm 2.3kg heavier than last Thursday but it will come off quickly. I do find though I now need to do 3 FD to lose, 2 FD just maintains for me but that's because I usually don't track at all on NFD.

Thanks both, that's helpful.

KylieKoKo · 20/06/2022 14:12

I am having a break from fasting this week as I am going away. I will be back in a couple of weeks!

Badlifeday · 20/06/2022 16:58

Hope the day is going well for everyone. I managed a work bring-a-dish lunch while only drinking coffee, feel quite pleased about that! Trying for strictly ADF until my holidays in July.

SydneyCarton · 20/06/2022 18:07

Monday fasting here, and again on Wednesday - office days are FDs, but have changed them slightly this week due to the train strikes, so no b2b. Black coffee and water this morning, couple of cups of tea this afternoon, and some half-price sushi which we bought on the way home for dinner. Always more calorific than I think it's going to be, but the soy sauce means I drink loads of water which fills me up

Badlifeday · 20/06/2022 18:21

I know my fast day would be more effective if I did some exercise as well, but I just can't summon the energy!

sweetgingercat · 20/06/2022 18:43

Afternoon all, checking in for the first day of a b2b and then I’ll do a single fast day on Thursday. Last week I extended my fast into Friday, became starving and ate a load of carbs over the weekend! I have to pace myself better!

incognitodorrito · 20/06/2022 18:54

Checking in late for a B2B today and tomorrow. Have done well so far today and out with dog now getting my steps in.

harriethoyle · 20/06/2022 20:22

Kitchen closed at 632 which is a wee bit high because I'm now doing b2b weds and thurs instead of tomorrow - weather is glorious so going to barbecue tomorrow instead!

Kitchen closed on 550, looking forward to breakfast tomorrow. Well done Monday fasters!

EatYourFive · 21/06/2022 07:27

Kitchen closed at 570 yesterday, day 2 of b2b today but feeling a bit under the weather, will see how it goes.
