Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Hello, fasting today. I've noticed I've started eating more on my non-fast days, first two weeks I was really good at not taking this too far but this last week I've definitely been over doing it. Scales haven't budged which is not unexpected! I'm sure that's causing my stomach issues too, from famine to feast and back again ☹️
I miss my breakfast but going to have a nice cup of tea just now 🙂

harriethoyle · 12/06/2022 10:48

@Badlifeday I track weekday non fast days and plan what I'll eat on them. Stops me over eating during the week. Weekend days are a free for all but I still lose. It's about finding a balance that works for you

harriet it’s probably me being dense but I can’t understand what you meant by IF in your last message. As in, I know you mean intermittent fasting, but what kind - 18:6 sort of thing?

harriethoyle · 12/06/2022 12:00

Exactly @TheWayTheLightFalls . Basically, skipping breakfast 😂

OP posts:
TheWayTheLightFalls · 12/06/2022 12:32

Grin I sometimes do it, because if I eat breakfast it switches my hunger on. But it’s too, er, intermittent to quantify any results from.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 12/06/2022 19:17

Done. No idea of calories. Black coffee at breakfast time, baked beans with broccoli cooked with garlic at lunch then broccoli with pak choi and an egg for dinner. And diet coke. But mainly broccoli. I don’t rate my chances on the scales tomorrow because it’s TOTM but I’m happy with today. Off out to the garden now (away from the fridge!).

CheshireSplat · 12/06/2022 19:43

Looking forward to a FD tomorrow. Feel full today!

harriethoyle · 12/06/2022 20:07

Me too @CheshireSplat I've had a very snacky weekend! Looking forward to reining it back in a bit...

Also fasting tomorrow! Good luck and happy fasting everyone...

SydneyCarton · 13/06/2022 07:23

I was doing IF at the start of the year and fasting for a 16 hour stretch with an 8 hour eating window. I found that I was really just skipping breakfast and making up for it later on, so it didn’t work for me purely because of my lack of discipline! I think the two days of very limited calorie intake plus five days with a more generous allowance works better for me, though I do still track calories on 5:2, otherwise the same thing would happen.

Managed to stick more or less to TDEE Thursday to Sunday, one more NFD today and then my second b2b Tuesday and Wednesday when I’m in the office. Good luck Monday fasters!

CheshireSplat · 13/06/2022 07:29

I've just done my Monday weigh in and I've put on 2 lbs since last Monday.

I haven't been doing this properly for a couple of weeks (last 2 weeks I've done 1 FD and 1 mini fast) so I shouldn't be surprised, but it does show I have a problem with eating too much on the nonfasting days. Also, I haven't done any exercise for weeks. Am thinking about 30 day shred again....

Ah well, a good day today should help.

harriethoyle · 13/06/2022 09:29

@CheshireSplat if it went on quick, it should come off quick. Fingers crossed anyway...

Signing for day one of b2b. Already on my second black coffee...!

Just hopped on the scales to see what my FD SW is, as is my practice. I had a FAR more sober weekend than usual due to a combination of circumstaces including cancelled flights, airport runs etc... Probably about a third of usual consumption. I've only put on 800g this weekend which is unheard of. A sobering (no pun intended!) realisation as to the effect of alcohol on my weight!

CheshireSplat · 13/06/2022 11:31

That's great@harriethoyle !

Maybe I'll have an alcohol free week too...

absolutelyknackeredcow · 13/06/2022 11:46

Signing in for a b2b.
It's going to be a hugely eating weekend so need to keep a lid on it this week

incognitodorrito · 13/06/2022 12:55

Im in today and tomorrow !

harriethoyle · 13/06/2022 12:56

I don't drink M-Th @CheshireSplat... but I more than make up for it most weekends!

incognitodorrito · 13/06/2022 13:01

@Badlifeday same ! Im still trying to get a handle on my eating on non FDs. Im guessing I need to track everything on MFP, but as I cook a lot from scratch and find that a bit of a ball-ache tbh. I see a personal trainer weekly and try to make the gym atleast 3 times weekly. I’m def looking better than when i started, but need to loose the last 5 kilos, so maybe have to start being a lot stricter on non FDs too.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 13/06/2022 16:26

@incognitodorrito Fwiw when you want to lose I track for 2 days, fast for two and then eat pretty healthily for three
When I want to maintain - I fast for two and track for one and eat wildly for four

That's helpful, thank you @absolutelyknackeredcow

Have had a great FD so far. Some salad veg and balsamic for lunch and just one hot drink with milk, so I'm at under 100 cals so far and not that hungry.

harriethoyle · 13/06/2022 18:31

Kitchen closing here on 565. Pretty easy as FDs go... roll on tomorrow!

Kitchen closed on day 1 539
So bloody busy at work there was no time to eat

Great recommendation - I’ll try this 👍

incognitodorrito · 13/06/2022 20:53

Closed at just under 650 today and already in bed !

CrabPuff · 13/06/2022 22:19

Just sidling in a bit late - my first successful FD for a while. I kept starting them and not posting as I was failing endlessly. However!

The kitchen is closed at 495 and then I’ll do another on Weds.
lunch was a chopped salad of broccoli, avocado, red onion and cucumber with plenty of salt and and an omelette this evening.
apple before my workout.

looking forward to my NFD tomorrow and then hopefully managing to achieve similar on Weds. this WOE works so so SO well when I stick to it! I may avoid B2Bs initially as I fare a lot better with the mantra “I can have it tomorrow”. Crossed fingers anyway.
