Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Signing in for Tues. absolutely I find the busiest (work) days easiest here tbh, as my hands and brain are busy. Even though I work with food all day!

harriethoyle · 14/06/2022 08:47

I'm joining you @TheWayTheLightFalls I've got quite a busy day so hoping it flies by! @CrabPuff well done for getting back into it, psychologically the first one back is always the hardest.

Ready to go for my b2b, water and black coffee so far, plus a 5K run first thing this morning (smug). Going to try and keep going with coffee and water until the afternoon, and then some tea ☕️. I don’t tend to count the calories in the milk though I probably should. Sausages and beans for dinner I think, plenty of protein 😃

KylieKoKo · 14/06/2022 10:25

Signing in for day 1 of a b2b today.

Badlifeday · 14/06/2022 11:05

I'm fasting today. Have discovered I don't like shopping or cooking for the dc when I'm fasting, hardly a surprise really!

sweetgingercat · 14/06/2022 13:13

Kitchen closed at 516 yesterday, back in for another day today. Started with an egg and brown pita as I felt totally wiped out this morning. Hoping that will keep me going for a long time!

harriethoyle · 14/06/2022 16:31

Lots of us fasting today! I've got to go to the supermarket tonight @Badlifeday and I'm dreading it. It's tough when you're hangry!

Closing my B2B this week with 555 cals today. Off to gym shortly and straight to bed after to avoid the kitchen !

Badlifeday · 14/06/2022 18:37

I'm impressed you can workout on a fast day, I only have enough energy for essential tasks!

CrabPuff · 14/06/2022 18:48

Impressed as ever by the B2Bs and also working out at the end of a FD! I can manage it at the beginning of day 1 but I’m rubbish on Day 2 and now have a banana for breakfast before the gym.

Back on it tomorrow and going to repeat exactly what I did yesterday and hope for the same result. Today’s NFD is going to come in around 1600 I think.

CrabPuff · 14/06/2022 18:51

also - I saw upthread a comment about stomach issues. I always have an upset tummy about 45mins to an hour after I’ve first eaten, the morning after a FD. It wears off for me a few weeks in, but I’d forgotten about it and it struck this morning.

SydneyCarton · 14/06/2022 19:19

Kitchen closed on 682 on day 1 of b2b. Bit higher than I expected as DP suggested chips instead of the planned beans to have with sausages, and I was easily persuaded! Could happily have scoffed the whole portion, but we shared it 4 ways with 2 DC (3rd DC showed no interest, bizarre!).

Apple Watch shows nearly 1200 active calories burned and over 9 miles walked/run, so hopefully a pretty good deficit. Exhausted now though and still have children's bedtime to do 😩

harriethoyle · 14/06/2022 20:12

@SydneyCarton 3rd DC clearly sickening for something because no one in their right minds would turn down sausage and chips

Kitchen closed here on 598 which I'm really happy with as day 2 of a b2b

Done! No idea about calories but it was an absolute festival of broccoli. I tend to dry fry it with garlic, chilli and ginger and then serve with a little soy sauce and (today) chicken breast. Busy day which helped. Resisted crisps and cheap wine at a company do this evening.

KylieKoKo · 14/06/2022 22:04

Kitchen closed on 514 but "d"p popped to the shops for eggs and has come back with crisps! He's now sitting there munching them telling me to just have some if I want to as it won't make a difference as I've lost loads of weight already! Naturally he is effortlessly slim😡

absolutelyknackeredcow · 14/06/2022 22:10

Day 2 of b2b coming in at 650 so 600 overall
So much easier when it's hot.
Well done fasters

incognitodorrito · 15/06/2022 07:09

@TheWayTheLightFalls your brocolli sounds delish ! May have that with chicken tonight instead of rice.

harriethoyle · 15/06/2022 07:35

That's the holiday weight off according to the scales this morning. 0.9kg to get back to goal... I'm going to do a mini today as we have three nights of entertaining coming up this weekend so I need to be virtuous while I can!

OP posts:
CrabPuff · 15/06/2022 09:13

Checking in for 2nd FD of the week. Feeling reasonably motivated but it’s early yet!

I might try miso aubergine this evening if the calories come out ok on MFP.

I have a lot of social eating to do tomorrow and the weekend so may throw in a mini for 1000 cals on Friday.

sweetgingercat · 15/06/2022 09:23

kitchen closed last night on 680 which was fine for the second day of B2b. Happy to be eating normally today but will be fasting again tomorrow. Anyone with me?

KylieKoKo · 15/06/2022 09:32

Dat 2 of b2b today. I woke up thirsty but not too hungry thankfully.

KylieKoKo · 15/06/2022 09:33

@sweetgingercat I am still yet to do more than 2 fast days in a week!

LoisLane23 · 15/06/2022 09:36

Does everyone experience weight loss each week, or
Some weeks despite sticking to the 500 the weight stays static? Feeling a bit dismayed at being a total angel (and frigging starving) on fast days but not losing.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 15/06/2022 10:08

lois I have had some looooong plateaus in my time. Super frustrating. Keep your water intake up, stick to your FDs, and a lot will whoosh off at once.
