Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 19

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/05/2020 22:25

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Morning all

Weighing in this morning at 142.2lb, meaning a 1lb loss in week 8. I saw 141.6lb on the scales mid-week so not sure where that's disappeared to but anyway!

Finishing week 8 with a total of 19lb lost having started at 161.2lb. Also did my measurements and have lost a total of 27.5 inches from waist, tummy, hips, thighs and arms. Now in size 10-12 jeans, depending on the brand... started in size 16s. So this last 8 weeks has really been an absolute game-changer for me and if you are just starting off do stick with it.

I am staying on plan as is until I see a number in the 130s, I am hoping to do that in 10 weeks so another fortnight to go. My carbs were a bit higher than average this past week as I slacked a bit! So going to push that back down a bit for the next two weeks.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 20/05/2020 10:31

Morning!

Ended yesterday on 650 calories, and rather irritatingly weighed in this morning on 10 stone 7 lbs which is a loss of 1 lb.

My strategy is going to be only to weigh myself once a week as otherwise be obsessive about it as I find I need some gratification as have stopped all of my other vices Smile

Justasecondnow · 20/05/2020 13:36

@agteacht that is amazing! You’re stats aren’t a million miles from mine so is really encouraging to see how well you’ve done. Did you do much exercise too?

Realised I put twice as much coconut milk in the curry as I should have. I thought it was luxurious! Blame reading recipe on my phone. Paper copy of the book now on its way. Still prob didn’t throw me off too much as skipped breakfast. Ho hum!

agteacht · 20/05/2020 14:58

Ah thanks @Justasecondnow 🥰

Don't worry about the odd recipe mistake. I made one of those last week, made almond soda bread and messed up my measurements completely, ending up with 5g carbs per slice!!! Woops. Main thing is to stay on track 90% of the time and focus on keeping carbs low even if cals slip up a bit.

Exercise, yes I do a spin class most days (online of course) and I have a 5 month old baby so I take her for a walk too. However I was doing all of that before I started BSD and the scales weren't moving so I honestly believe it's about the diet, the exercise I find is a nice extra because it keeps me a bit more motivated to stay on track.

Lndnmummy · 20/05/2020 16:12

Checking in, 3 days in for me. I have not been exact on plan (a couple of ice lollies here and there and white wine spritzers). Mainly trying to get back to the woe with 2 meals and lots of water in between. I’m doing ok! Weight loss not the usual wosh you get at the beginning as I haven’t been as strict as I should but I’ll get there by the beginning of next week which is my real kick off day. It’s going to be a slog but I’m finally ready! The heat helps too as 1) not so hungry and 2) being overweight really sucks in the heat.

whensmynexthol1day · 20/05/2020 16:20

@thenewaveragebear ooh interesting. I normally make sure I always use a uk brand name eg Sainsbury's for things like raw chicken and it normally seems to match the back of the packet which I presume is the raw values. But I'll be more vigilant and make sure going forward!
It seems totally bizarre to do cooked values as if you're cooking from scratch you weigh the ingredients as they go in! I wonder now whether for things like carrots and other veg it's raw or cooked? I've always assumed raw.
I guess the thing you always need to bear in mind with mfp is that it's only as good as the users who have built up the database! Do you use a different app- is it more trustworthy?

whensmynexthol1day · 20/05/2020 16:23

@agteacht amazing progress! That inch loss is amazing. I've lost roughly the same in lbs, but not inches I don't think. I've gone from size 12 jeans to a 10. Just shows how a mixture of where you shop (I clearly shop at places with vanity sizing!) and your body shape/ how you carry weight makes a big difference.

MooPointCowsOpinion · 20/05/2020 16:39

Oh god help me, I’m crashing back in having put back on almost the entire stone I lost when I started this diet back in January. I caught COVID and it turned into pneumonia and I was really poorly, recovery was so slow and I think I ate my own weight in biscuits just to have something to do as I couldn’t walk or talk.
I’m back fighting fit now! Did a half-arsed fast day yesterday and found it SO hard, going for a long walk after kids are asleep tonight and just need to bite the bullet and get this weight off.
I want to go back to work in 2 months slimmer and with a few new suits, ready for my new promotion like a boss!

agteacht · 20/05/2020 16:53

@whensmynexthol1day hahah yea and also my tummy was still pretty swollen from pregnancy shape to be fair, you were probably a better shape to start with!
I lost 18lb from Jan-March but didn't really shrink at all. This extra 19lb over the last 8 weeks from BSD has changed my body shape if that makes sense.

@MooPointCowsOpinion well done on getting started after what sounds like a very traumatic time!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/05/2020 16:53

I use fat secret @whensmynexthol1day
But I think they use the same database. If you're using packaging you should be ok, it's the way they word it

So eg if it says 'as sold' then that's raw weight. I've seen it on pork steaks where it will say cals per 100g as sold and also eg 150 g 'cooked and trimmed of fat' and to be honest I have no idea if that means a 150g piece that you then cook (so cooked weight = 125g approx) or whether it means 150g if the cooked product. Realistically the cals in 50g meat aren't going to destroy your efforts if you're otherwise on plan, and particularly if it's protein or fat, I wouldn't worry about it. Carbs cooked/raw definitely more important to be accurate.

Amazing work @agteacht well done!

I'm closing the kitchen on 1012 cals and 14g carbs. Met a friend for a socially distanced gin in the park this evening, so lovely to spend time with someone not from my house! We followed all social distancing rules of course, but even so just lovely to see her after all these weeks. So I swapped dinner for a few drinks. And I did run 1 of couch to 5k today as well. Just 18 months ago I could run up to 10 miles - slowly, but I could do it. Then a year + of stress and associated bad health habits and I feel like I'm starting all over with my fitness!

agteacht · 20/05/2020 21:44

Thanks @LarryUnderwood - impressive carb count don't think I've ever managed under 20!

LarryUnderwood · 20/05/2020 21:56

It was thanks to a lunch of satay chicken breast and a protein & green veg smoothie, and a 'dinner' of leftover roast beef!

Lndnmummy · 20/05/2020 23:51

Really inspiring to see everyone’s numbers. How do you guys manage afternoons and evenings? Any tips? I find myself perfectly fine all day then by the afternoon it’s like the devil is in me and I’m on a carb crusade. This afternoon was better as I was more mindful and I had cooked the boys dinner in the morning. It meant I didn’t have to cook their food when starving myself.
Just some thoughts from me.

Gilead · 21/05/2020 00:25

I’ve got a shop arriving on Friday, lots of chicken and veg. Am getting through the last of the bread etc that’s here and will start in earnest on Saturday. Am worried as am on high dose steroids and they tend to make you ravenous, but I’m going to try!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/05/2020 08:20

@Lndnmummy it helps to get your fat in early and I also find that to drink early as well so get lots of water throughout the day. The biggest issue I have is that i don't actually go to bed when I'm tired because if I do, dh just disturbs me when he comes up, so I end up sitting up with him and then I get hungry/bored and end up grazing.

OP posts:
LarryUnderwood · 21/05/2020 08:51

@Lndnmummy the days I've managed best have been where I've had plenty of protein at lunch. I also find if I have a hot lunch and dinner I feel more satisfied. So I have started bulk cooking - monday I made chicken korma, chilli, bolognese and satay chicken. Then I can just reheat. Makes it a lot easier when the family are having fish and chips or yummy pasta!

Lndnmummy · 21/05/2020 09:15

I’d forgotten how amazingly supportive this thread is. Ok, fat, protein and water. Got it!!

Lndnmummy · 21/05/2020 09:15

Thanks guys ❤️.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 21/05/2020 09:44

So, after promising myself not to jump on the scales this morning, of course I did.

But am 10 stone 5lbs, so only another 4 lbs and will be officially not over weight.

Grilled chicken last night with spring greens and chilli.

7 lbs loss in a week - Smile

Lndnmummy · 21/05/2020 10:22

@ilovemydogandmrobama2 what an amazing result!!

agteacht · 21/05/2020 10:58

Fantastic @ilovemydogandMrObama !

@Lndnmummy babybels (or nicer still small cheddar bites from Sainsbury's) are a great handy snack if you are reaching for the biscuit tin !

Gilead · 21/05/2020 11:00

My shakes have just arrived! I'm going to be using them for breakfast as I have to take my medication as early as possible and I have to eat before taking it. I thought the act of not physically eating might help!

NathanNathan · 21/05/2020 11:19

I've tried the shakes @Gilead, found them fine. Best put in a blender of some sort to whoosh them up, and if you have the calories to add a bit of Greek yogurt that makes it nice!

Lostmyunicorn · 21/05/2020 11:23

May I please join? I am on day 3 of fast 800, and according to scales this morning have lost 2 lbs. I’m looking to lose 2 st so long way to go. I’m not always following the recipes on fast 800, just the broad principles of v low carb and max 800 calories. I’m also trying to time restrict to a roughly 15:9 window.
