Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 16

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/08/2019 21:26

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

So weighed myself after 2 days on it properly (although had cut down on carbs etc since Saturday) and I've lost 4.5lbs!

I know I shouldn't only weigh once a week but need the incentive as we're out tonight.

I've done SW in recent years but have found it doesn't actually limit the amount of food I eat and at 5st overweight I can eat a lot! I'm hoping this will reprogram me!

Kimlek · 31/12/2019 08:15

riddle I need to persuade my DH to do dry January too or at least when he’s at home. I had another 3 glasses of wine last night, which is annoying as my food had been great. I can never have just one glass!! I may start having diet tonic water to trick my brain into thinking G&T. I love a G&T!!! I know fizzy diet drinks aren’t BSD but better than blooming wine!! And I know fevertree light are still not zero cals but got to start somewhere.

Kimlek · 31/12/2019 08:46

I need mindset help...
What’s bothering me the most, even though I’m a good 2st away from it, is the maintaining phase.... always having to watch what I eat and drink. It’s not a ‘phase’ at all. It’s forever. And for some reason that scares me.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 31/12/2019 11:09

Kimlek I drink diet tonic etc (even though it's not technically BSD) but I do avoid fevertree because it's sweetened with pure fructose, and fructose is the real baddie especially when it's as a drink. I'd personally switch to standard sweetener/Schweppes if you are going to drink it.

With regards to your maintenance, my advice would be to not panic. It sounds a cliche, but your life and your whole attitude to food is going to change doing this plan. It's not that you will spend your whole life in that permanent state of detox like in the first few days. Your cravings will go. YOu will feel calm around foods which previously you felt totally controlled by. When I did my first few months properly sugar free, I felt so calm, I genuinely didn't want those things.

Maintaining gets easier because your physiology changes, you process calories better because you don't have so much visceral fat, your insulin response is better controlled and you develop habits which even if you do have a day/week/month even off plan, they sort of 'carry you through'

I've maintained for 18 months now (although i will have had a substantial gain this Christmas!) and it's the first time I've ever successfully maintained any weight loss long term. And that's with probably only really being on plan 50% but maintaining those good habits (not eating breakfast, eating more fat, drinking water, none of 'the big 5 carbs' as a general rule ) even when I've not been on plan properly.

Trust the plan! It really does work. And use the threads because there's always people on here who are struggling too or who can inspire you. Thanks

@blackistheneworange well done!

This is my menu for the week, shopping list done for tomorrow. I dread to think how much I will have gained these two weeks, but hey. We've had a lovely Christmas and to be honest I think I needed a week of total abandonment of all rules! November and December were exceptionally stressful for me, but I'm going into January feeling, not rested particularly, but relaxed, which is a start.

bear ahhh thanks for the heads up re tonic! It’s a shame as I love the variety of flavours with fevertree but I’ll get regular Schweppes instead! I did suggest to DH this am that we do dry January but he was Hmm but I’m definitely going to try regardless. Love the idea of posting plans!!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 31/12/2019 12:07

@Kimlek yes I didn't realise at first about the fevertree light. The stance on artificial sweeteners varies, I think in small doses especially if it stops you having actual sugar it has its place, but try not to rely on it as a diet staple. Although there are things I've read that say it causes insulin release exactly the same as sugar does, which has helped me to cut it out of unnecessary things (eg no longer use in coffee etc)

Maccalenny · 31/12/2019 12:07

Black that’s brilliant well done! I think the fast800 book does say daily weighing can be a positive, if it helps you stay on track. It definitely helps me.

Maccalenny · 31/12/2019 12:16

Bear thank you for the advice on maintenance. I’m still a little way off, but I do fluctuate between confidence that this time will be different, and then dread that I will wake up in a years time with all the weight back, my lovely new wardrobe not fitting and no mental strength to do it all again. Those worries are decreasing as time goes on but they are still there.

Pajamagirl · 31/12/2019 16:24

Poorly sick and feeling sorry for myself
Not yet picked it up after Christmas and holiday but continuing to maintain 👍
I don’t feel well enough but hopefully by mon I will have picked up and be back at work so in more of a routine

Happy 2020 everyone

thenewaveragebear1983 · 31/12/2019 17:20

Happy new year everyone! Hope the new year and new decade bring you everything you wish for!

WineStar

I've just been to Tesco to get my healthy stuff for tomorrow as there is nothing suitable in the house and nothing is going to stand in my way from tomorrow! I'm going to try to do a nice long fast, lots of water, take my vitamins, and go for a run.
I will do the dreaded weigh in as well, but even though I know it will be a big gain I'm not too concerned, I know I can shift that with a few strict weeks.

Maccalenny · 31/12/2019 18:24

Happy new year all!
I’ve been setting intentions for the coming year....a bit like new year resolutions only more flexible and less easy to give up on and forget! It feels amazing, for the first time in 20 years, not to have something along the lines of finding a way to lose weight amongst my intentions. This year my intentions include yoga, walking, healthy diet and fun stuff, but no weight loss - incredible!
Pyjama I do hope you are on the mend soon. Being in routine is definitely good - I know I will find it easier next week too. I do love my holidays but it is not so easy to stay on track during them.

FluffyEarMuffs · 31/12/2019 18:58

@thenewaveragebear1983 I will be behind your by a day! I am restarting on the 2nd...

Best of luck for tomorrow.

Happy New Year everyone!

Riddleofthesands · 31/12/2019 22:03

Poor you Pyjama, look after yourself.

Happy New Year everyone, we had stir fry and now getting gently sozzled before hitting the cross trainer tomorrow! 2020 here we come!

Kimlek · 01/01/2020 00:21

Yes bear thanks for the advice regarding maintenance- I feel exactly the same as maccalenny. Had a good day today with not too much celebratory booze! But we’ll see when I weigh in the morning. I also weigh daily black and log it on ‘happy scale’.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! 🥳

Kimlek · 01/01/2020 08:52

I’ve managed to lose a couple of pounds this week and down to 11st 12.4lbs (75.5kg)
I bob around the 12st mark usually - a couple of pound over - a couple of pound under. But I’m happy with this given the wine etc.
I’m making bear’s chicken thigh passanda for dinner tonight - love the recipe thread!

Kimlek · 01/01/2020 09:17

@Maccalenny would you mind posting your cottage cheese crustless quiche recipe please as I’ve a big tub of cottage cheese!

Kimlek · 01/01/2020 09:19

Posted too soon.... there’s a couple of slimming world ones online but they avoid fat so wondered if yours was different?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/01/2020 10:20

Well I have weighed in after my two weeks of festivities at 10.11.8 which means I've gained a rather large amount!! Not good, although completely expected

Currently lay in the sofa feeling hungover and contemplating getting up and doing something useful...

OP posts:
Maccalenny · 01/01/2020 11:19

Hi Kimlek - my quiche recipe is as follows:

6 Eggs, Whole, Raw
30g White Mushrooms, Raw
50g Co Op Frozen Diced Onions 500g
50g Red Peppers, Raw
300g Cottage Cheese, Plain
60g Cheddar Cheese
50g Ham

I dry-fry the veg until cooked and liquid has all evaporated. Then beat eggs, add cottage cheese, ham, half the cheddar and mix in the veg. Put into whatever you are cooking it in, top with remaining cheddar and cook until set....usually about 40 mins.
I tend to store it wrapped in a bit of kitchen roll as even when the veggies are cooked, it can still leak quite a bit of liquid.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/01/2020 20:31

Had a pretty good start to the year.

I haven't calorie counted today, only because I forgot to and so I didn't see the point in guessing/approximating. I will weigh and cal count all food from tomorrow.

I've had a huge salad with vegan cheese, avocado and mayo; 2 oatcakes spread with PB and a few nuts; dinner will be a little grazing plate of olives, falafel, salad and houmous

Did our food shop today, it was nice to be back to normal and the fridge looks very green! We have decided to go pork free in January to wean our kids off pork pie, sausage roll and ham products - but it is hard to shop for 5 for lunches without pork and I will have to think more carefully about what we eat.

bear Do you plan to go into Fast 800 until you get back to goal? I have been maintaining since October but I too have put on a few kg over Christmas (scared to actually weigh!). I’m quite annoyed with myself as I planned to be more controlled. I don’t know whether it’s best to do strict Fast 800 until the weight comes off or whether it might be enough to just cut out all the alcohol, sugar, starch etc and lose the weight more slowly. Any advice? Thanks!

Maccalenny · 02/01/2020 05:57

I’m going to do my meal planning for next week today, so I can get shopping order done. If it ends up readable and coherent like Bear’s I will share!
First proper day of Adrienne’s 30 days of yoga......I know Phoenix is doing it too.....anyone else? I’m hoping to improve some aches and pains in my back and shoulders over the 30 days, and maybe discover a muscle or two!
Food today will be crustless quiche, chickpea patties with eggs, chicken and veg curry, all with a bit of salad.
Bear I’ve cracked open my jar of sauerkraut that had been hiding at the back of the cupboard for months and I’m loving it! I want to try making homemade at some point this year, having been inspired by yours earlier this year.

Nothingoriginalhere · 02/01/2020 07:04

I calorie counted yesterday and ended the day on 850 calories, wasnt supposed to start until today but couldn't wait!
I managed 2.3litres of water too and a brisk 45 min dog walk so feeling pleased
Food wise I has 2egg cheese and onion omelette
(30G cheese,) at 12pm and then x2 smoked mackeral fillets and salad for dinner at 6 ish. - does that sound ok?

hope I got it right for the fast 800,
thanks for all your posts ladies - it really inspires and motivates.
