Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 16

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/08/2019 21:26

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Pyjamagirl I never need an excuse to post a graph! I’ve been on this for nearly 9 months and have lost 64.4lb. Each vertical line on the graph is a week, and the little lines show the weight variation in that week. I tend to plateau a bit in school holidays and lose a bit better during the week at work, as I can avoid snacking more easily.

This way of eating has completely changed how I think about food. I’m at a weight now that I never thought I would get to, and am confident that I can lose a bit more, and maintain. I have a whole new wardrobe full of clothes I love and much less chance of getting various unpleasant illnesses.

Please go for it - it actually works. The only thing I’ve ever found that does!

@Maccalenny wooooooow what an incredible weight loss! I'm terrified to do my starting weight, but I think that's keeping me away from actually starting losing, if that makes sense.

I'm feeling very inspired! Thank you!

Pajamagirl · 24/11/2019 18:35

@Maccalenny
Wow that’s amazing , well done !!
Bet you feel great

I love a graph too 👍
Ok , I’m 5 5 and 13 9 so pretty fat and a high bmi ( I’ve put half stone in this last 2 weeks as been off work and ate like it’s going out of fashion )
Back in tomorrow so back to a routine , previously I have done tre 16 :8 and found that is doable for me , just need to do the rest of it

Well done , that is very inspirational

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/11/2019 21:08

I lost 21lbs the first time I did 8 straight Weeks BSD, then regained some, then lost around 30lbs last year which took me to a total loss of 3 stone, which I have then (pretty much) maintained for a year. The more you have to lose, the more you will lose (I know that's obvious Grin!)

I agree with macca, please try it. You will change the way you think about food forever.

I've had an ok day but I'm starting big time tomorrow. I had that awful realisation today that if I don't drop a few pounds before Christmas then if I have the inevitable festive gain, I will end up over 11 stone again, which I promised myself I would never do,

So: tomorrow. Food shopping for the week. Meals will be, after a long fast til lunch, a salad with tuna and dinner will be chicken with veg. I'm going to roast and prep a chicken to have in the fridge this week to keep me away from processed pork products, and I'm really really going to go back to basics on the carbs (ie none of the baddies that have been creeping in recently).

I really have got to give myself a big kick up the bum this time. For me that simply means keeping out of the kitchen and not eating my emotions. It's my head not my appetite that needs help!

I'm feeling positive though, and I will start the day with water and my vitamins. I'm not running tomorrow but I will do a 30 mins hiit workout.
Have a good week everyone!

Hi Pajama and Queen!

As the inspirational Macca and Bear have said, you can have amazing, sustainable losses with this WOE. I used to do slimming world, and thought it was the bees knees, but it just taught me bad food habits - stuffing down pasta and couscous - I feel SO much better on the Fast800.

I used it to lose a stone at the start of the year, getting me to my lowest weight in a decade. It took me about a month, and I kept it off much more easily than ever before. Due to a beer-soaked summer holiday and a sudden bereavement I put almost half a stone back on, but I'm back on for a couple of weeks, and it's working brilliantly again.

That said, today was a bit of a struggle in the afternoon, but after stuffing a few Heck chicken sausages things seemed to level off again. Grin A little tempted to stuff down some toast in the hope of a 'Whoosh' overnight, but suspect that's just because I want toast, rather than I'm due a whoosh.... sigh.

Pajamagirl · 24/11/2019 22:19

@venusinfers
Yep I feel sluggish and bloated
It’s great to hear so many success stories

Campervan69 · 24/11/2019 22:23

Ok so I actually did did take a deep breath and weigh myself this morning and I was amazed to see I have not actually gained any weight. Despite all the cake I've been eating due to several small children's birthday parties this week. I've now got two weeks until my 50th birthday so I'm going to try and drop a couple of pounds in the run-up just so that everything fits nicely. Then after that that I will try once again to lose a couple of pounds in the run-up to Christmas and New Year's. Obviously things will slacken off over Christmas and New Year but I will be back on it in the new year to see if I can break the 11 stone barrier in time for for my Easter holidays.

Maccalenny · 25/11/2019 05:28

Venus I completely agree with you about SlimmingWorld. I was veggie when I tried that, so did ‘green’ days. Loads of carbs, very little protein and fat. How was it ever going to work? I lost 4lb in 8 weeks, spent a fortune and put it back on in one weekend. I really hated the fact that weight loss was prized above health.....people losing weight by living off tins of macaroni cheese or packets of dried rice mixes were celebrated....it just felt really wrong.

I know we talk a lot about weight loss on here too, but we don’t forget that this diet was invented to reverse diabetes, and that we are cutting our risk of so many diseases by eating smaller portions of healthy food.

That was a big rant for first thing in the morning! Have a great day everyone.

whattheduffz · 25/11/2019 09:14

So I've done WW on and off and all sorts of other diets and this is BY FAR the best and most sustainable. Can you imagine after 12 weeks or so on this what will happen when you move to 5/2? It will feel so luxurious. :-)

W4D1 weigh in and 4kg loss. Chuffed. I want another 3 off by Christmas fingers crossed.

VenusInfers · 25/11/2019 13:13

Absolutely Macca! Yes, yes, yes! - oh, and the worship given out to Muller Light yogurts was just BIZARRE. Full of so much artificial crap; utterly disgusting. Give me a few spoonfuls of Yeo Valley Natural Yogurt any day. I know some people do brilliantly on SW, but it's a twisted way of doing things.

Great news on the weight loss, Duffz! Yay!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/11/2019 18:25

I think SW exploits the little voice inside us that says 'you can't cope with being hungry, you must have constant food, you must feel full' which we all have I think. Well this plan turns that little voice upside down! I think sw has its benefits for people with a lot of weight to lose who are going from absolutely zero healthy food - of course you will lose weight in the first few weeks- but long term it is so easy to overeat and to eat the wrong foods. I used to eat 3 x the food I do now on sw! Plus it's incredible fructose heavy and snacking on fructose is a sure fire way to lay down fat.

Today I've had a very good day. 2 meals of cold chicken, salad, sauerkraut and mayo (if you've not tried that combo, try it. Try it now. It's immense) and gallons of water. Made myself a nice soy milk latte with my new milk frother (amazing. £1 from Ikea!) and I have been sooooo busy - 16k steps and I haven't even run!

I think I've probably had less than 20g carbs today and I have that weird 'hyped energetic' feeling.

OP posts:
Maccalenny · 25/11/2019 19:12

Bear is that your homemade sauerkraut? I have some of the stuff in the jar, but I don’t really like it and since I realised it was pasteurised so probably not very useful, it’s been sitting at the back of my fridge all unloved. Cold chicken and mayo is definitely a match made in heaven.

Duffz fabulous job, well done!

My food today - fish pie with turnip mash...can’t get enough turnip at the moment! - some roast beef with peas and carrots, and a couple of egg muffin in ham cup things.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/11/2019 19:27

It's shop bought, I ate all my homemade and haven't done any more yet. My next batch is going to be purple! I love the shop bought though, even though it's pasteurised, so I guess it's just a matter of tastebuds! I love the saltiness with the mayo!

My dinner tonight- really simple chicken casserole with chicken thighs, parsnips, carrots and pumpkin, baked with a bit of stock added at the end. Yummy!

Bear that looks gorgeous.

My food today - fish pie, tomatoey chicken stew, and a small glass of milk and a couple of squares of 85% chocolate. One ham/egg muffin.

And also need to mention...

NEW NUMBERS FOR ME THIS MORNING!!!

I’m officially below 12 stone. Really truly never thought I would ever get here again. I used to think maybe I would find a way to stay steady at around 14 stone. Now somewhere in the 11s seems very doable!

Pajamagirl · 26/11/2019 20:15

@Maccalenny
Well done ! Great result

I am having salmon and pea shoot stir fry with a garlic sauce
It was lovely 😊
Dh asked did I want Christmas pudding ( he doesn’t believe in waiting lol ) but I resisted
My starting weight was 13 s 7
Not 13s 9 so already winning

Pajamagirl · 27/11/2019 07:15

1 lb down this morning at the beginning of day 2 . Not a lot but better than nowt 👍

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/11/2019 08:01

I was down to 10.6.6 this morning, I actually can't remember being that low for a very long time indeed and that's about 5.5lbs off since Monday- although anyone who follows this thread will know about my impressive water retention abilities! Day 3 is always a hard day for me, but today I have another supremely busy day and will be at college over lunchtime which will help me in extending the fast over the morning until 2.30.

Dinner tonight is leftover chicken from yesterday (or might save that til tomorrow) and lunch will be avocado and tinned Tuna when I do eventually have if

Have a good day all x

Excuse the X
Forgot where I was for a minute!!!

OP posts:
VenusInfers · 27/11/2019 08:12

Ha ha Bear, x to you to!

Congrats Macca that's -such- a milestone!

I'm having a funny one - same weight for 5 days! Which on any other diet would be normal, but is vv unusual for Fast 800. I promise I've been 'good' too, weighing everything. Was a couple of hundred cals over at the weekend, but was doing loads of exercise so felt that was okay. Aiming to finish by Sunday at the latest, and unless things change fast will not reach my lower target, which is still 3 lbs away. Was super strict yesterday and STILL nowt. Grrrr! Oh well, got to keep on keeping on I suppose...

Hopesofshrinking · 27/11/2019 13:32

Hi all,

Hopefully you don't mind me joining this thread. I've been doing Exante for a week and after searching for online forums on VLCD came across the threads on here. I’m definitely going to switch to this instead as exante is pretty soul destroying!
I've just ordered the book and am excited to eat proper food again Smile

Riddleofthesands · 27/11/2019 16:58

Congrats Macca you are doing so well!

I had 300 gr mushrooms panfried in butter and salt for lunch. So good! Spinach and fish for dinner with a couple of small new potatoes.

Welcome Hopesofshrinking, the food is really good on the BSD.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/11/2019 18:19

Venus plateaus are quite common especially if you lose loads to start with, you can find it then takes a while for your body to adjust. Also if you've increased your exercise while dramatically cutting calories that can also make you plateau. Hang on in there- you're doing the right things and a good day always shows so stick with it
