Blood sugar diet and Fast800 thread 15

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/05/2019 07:34

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Maccalenny That’s amazing! Well done :)

I had to tighten my belt one notch today (mini victory :D )

TheGhostOfBarryFairbrother · 01/06/2019 16:20

Hello! Newbie here. On BSD W3D1. Not weighing for MH reasons but with a lot to lose. Blood test on THursday which was the catalyst for starting the diet. Just glucose not HbA1C.

Finding myself sticking to the plan but going over on calories...

Great to hear your stories!

MelanieCheeks · 01/06/2019 18:01

Macca that's a real inspiration sory!
Welcome Ghost Smile

Saturday - ran parkrun, had lunch in town and compromised with a small bowl of seafood chowder, made courgette crisps and chorizo fritatta muffins (and DH then decided they were rather tasty and ate half of them!). Re-booted MFP and logged todays food.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/06/2019 18:26

Sounds like a good plan LDN. Welcome ghost

I am now home from holiday, feeling a bit bloated and over fed- really looking forward to getting back on it tomorrow. I'm too exhausted tonight to be bothered, so will probably have something very unhealthy for dinner, and one last glass of wine before my big health kick. This is the first day where I've eaten mindlessly and grazed on sugary stuff- even though I have had occasional sugar this week, I still retained some control, but today I've struggled. I'm blaming post holiday blues and period due tomorrow!

Plan for the week ahead, starting tomorrow: weigh myself, (with only one eye on the number as it's going to be a big one); go for a run, ideally a long one of 10+ km; do my measurements as I haven't for a while and I'm convinced I'm looking quite muscular (was described as 'ripped' by my brother in law on holiday Blush)

I've planned my menu til Friday and been shopping, and I'm hoping to get a few 800 days in simply by just not eating until I'm properly hungry. I really enjoyed doing the previous sugar free month, but I did find I still ate more than I needed, knowingly eating when I wasn't hungry. I'm returning to sugar free, plus alcohol free and this time I'm going to really hone in on this bad habit of mine and think before I eat.

It's my birthday in about 6 weeks, so that's my goal date- I'd like to have a really clean, low carb, sugar free health kick style few weeks!

bear that sounds like a plan, glad you had a good holiday.

Well done macca almost 3st lost, never mind the small blip this month, just look at the bigger picture.

DH got back from 3 weeks away on Thursday evening. Last night as we made dinner he said he hadn't had a salad for three weeks and I said I'd hardly eaten anything else. He asked if I'd lost any weight and I said 'A bit, did you notice any difference?' and he said no!! He was very complimentary about how I look but I did think that he would notice 10lbs had gone, especially as I wasn't that heavy to start with. Ah well, maybe he will notice when I lost the remaining 7lbs, and even if he doesn't, I don't mind, as I will look good in my bikini and my clothes will fit better, as well as being healthier.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/06/2019 14:29

Forced myself to brave the scales this morning- ouch! Although also fairly reassuring as there's categorically no way that I ate enough food to get a gain that massive, so it must be bloating/totm/ water retention (at least most of it!)

As per my plan, went for a lovely slow long run this morning, fasted- then had a Salad lunch and I've been drinking lots of water. I'm going to do my measurements this evening.

I've spent the morning making this monstrosity work of art with Ds for his birthday party tomorrow! (Look away now if you are of a nervous disposition....)

That's adorable @bear and well done on the run!

I've come back to scales being crazy again. I think I'm up 4lbs which is bloat/water/alcohol/etc. Scale started by saying I'm up 8lbs which I immediately knew wasn't right and seem to be able to recalibrate them by getting DD to stand on them in between weighs.

I'm really surprised how much this woe is impacting my mental health - I feel mentally stronger and can see moments of difficulty much clearer. Stuff like this weird break/pause with my bf would send me spiralling into a very negative existence but taking control of food is letting me feel in more control all over.

We've got a tough this week, I have a massive work pitch tomorrow and then on Tuesday a funeral for a dear friend's stillborn daughter. I honestly don't know how any of us are going to get through that one. Then rest of the week I have 2 uni sessions and the school summer fair on Saturday and a date with bf on Sunday. I'm definitely going to need to find control - I'm about to do a meal plan so hopefully I'll be able to stay on track somewhat!

FurForksSake · 02/06/2019 19:15

Hi, I've been following for a while so thought I'd join in :)

I've done two weeks, been on holiday and now starting again. I didn't do too badly on holiday, but think it will take me a week to get it back off.

I went to the cinema this morning and avoided all snacks, that was quite an achievement! I did have some 7-up free because they had nothing better and I didn't take my drinks bottle, but could be worse.

Lndnmummy · 02/06/2019 19:29

Hi everyone. Bear that cake is gorgeous. Your ds will be so happy! Looking forward to a new week tmrw away from half term. I have had an excellent weekend food and excersise wise but had wine last night. As suspected 1lbs on this morning. Highly irritating but fingers crossed it will be gone soon. Looking forward to checking in with you all this week.
Phoenix. Totally agree about impact on mental health. I sleep so much better too. My gp commented on how “radiant” I looked. To be fair she has seen me in the midst of my postnatal despair but hey, I’ll
take it!

Maccalenny · 02/06/2019 19:36

Bear that is a magnificent creation! Hope the measuring tape gives good news.

Phoenix that sounds like a really hard week. Planning can help, but be kind to yourself too.

QR - men are useless aren’t they! I’m sure he will notice the changes soon.

furforks - welcome. Sounds like you are doing really well already, especially at the cinema which is always tricky.

Ohyesiam · 02/06/2019 22:53

Went to a really lovely yoga workshop today. It was a shared lunch and I was SO on it. There was hummus, which I could live on, and gorgeous salads. But someone had brought a massive Victoria sponge and flapjacks. Reader, I ignored them all!
A going to weigh tomorrow and am bricking it.

Thanks for all the inspiring posts x

StarJasmine · 03/06/2019 08:19

Morning all, start of another week! I’m going to make this W3D1 after having the weekend away off. I didn’t eat ‘off plan’ - still no bread/potatoes/rice/sweets etc, and didn’t drink alcohol either, but wasn’t able to keep my water intake up and didn’t monitor calories/portions at all, have ‘put on’ 3lb which isn’t bad at all, and should even put pretty quickly back on 800cal days with drinking enough water. I feel a bit more toned in my middle having done half hour swims daily for 4 days too! Wish I could have my own posh hotel pool at home Grin

Have a good week all!

Ohyesiam · 03/06/2019 08:48

So just to talk about me for a bit more.....
I weighed a day early as I couldn’t stand the suspense!
Last time I weighed( two weeks ago) I didn’t lose, Confused and was given some great advice on here,
But I’ve had two off plan meals, been premenstrual, usually a total carb fest for me, but I managed by just letting myself go up to 1000 calories if I needed to.

But I’ve lost just over 5lb in the last fortnight, and I’m really pleased! It has really given me the incentive to keep on keeping on.

bear the cake looks so professional, and talking of cake, I loved your post about avoiding the cake being the winning stance.

“ star* you can do it

forksake good snack avoidance

phoenix will be thinking of you and your friendFlowers

FurForksSake · 03/06/2019 11:15

Morning all! Another week at the coal face. I've been spinning this morning, feels hard on no food, but waiting till nearer 1pm to break my fast.

Cake is amazing, shared lunch sounds lush, 5lbs is amazing, I too wish I had a pool and a pool person to look after it..

Ohyesiam · 03/06/2019 12:05

I want to declare it officially impossible to eat out as a vegetarian on this WOE!

On a fb page someone has posted about Wetherspoons kids menu offering 2 quorn sausages with cucumber and carrot sticks, which fits the bill I guess....

I think a grilled halloumi salad should be possible somewhere, but I’ve not found it yetGrin

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/06/2019 12:21

Ohyes oddly enough, Nando's is pretty good- macho peas, halloumi, salad. The cals might be a bit high, but at least it's on plan. Also, again oddly- macdonalds do a plain salad bowl, plus currently you can get spicy cheese things which aren't exactly ideal but not too terrible. (Not sure if they are vege though!)

FurForksSake · 03/06/2019 13:18

Favourite lunch today, poached egg and smoked salmon salad. Really should have been just two eggs, but the gym session left me ravernous! I love poached eggs with salad as the running yolk dresses the salad with a touch of lemon and no oil.

Haven't decided on dinner, I might have steak stir fry and make the kids quorn nuggets.

What's for dinner? Inspire me!

Being a veggie or worse a vegan on this plan must be tricky at times. I think one of the pizza places does a pretty decent superfood salad.

Blood sugar diet and Fast800 thread 15
StarJasmine · 03/06/2019 13:36

I eat veggie a lot of the time at home, lots of eggs cheese and Quorn really. I’ve been eating more fish than usual on this plan and meat just occasionally, apart from eating out this weekend when it was meat overload!

Veggie eating out there are usually salad options though, make up a mezze with veggie side dishes etc.

Ohyesiam · 03/06/2019 14:05

Thanks for the vegetarian suggestions, I’ve never tried. Nando’s, the friend I’m with says it’s Wetherspoons with more chicken and without the fruit machines?!

The one time ive ventured out on this WOE was to a country pub, so no niceties like veggie starters. More like home cooked mac Donald’s type menu. It was nice to have an excuse to come off plan for an evening[wink)but I wouldn’t want to do it often.

ForksSake the lunch looks lovely.
Tonight I’ll have a mushroom, aubergine spinach and green lentil curry, with cauliflower rice.
Looks a bit like a cow pat, but tastes great.

FurForksSake · 03/06/2019 14:29

I don't like mushrooms, but the rest sounds lush! I think I need to find some go-to veggie curry recipes as they seem like a good hit of flavour and filling.

StarJasmine · 03/06/2019 14:38

Nando’s is actually really good for vegetarians, lots of different options, although the mains all come as ‘burger/wrap/pitta’ options so bit naughty on this plan, you’d have to unwrap them! But you could make something up, they have portobello mushrooms/halloumi/proper veggie burgers (as in made of vegetables!).

I always thought Nando’s would be a bit naff but it’s not bad at all really.

MelanieCheeks · 03/06/2019 17:23

Hmmmm. Bit of a wobble this morning.

I'd decided to skip breakfast, and had an eggy muffin at 11, before running 6k. Followed by a bag of wotsits and my planned salad. Then felt a dizzy spell starting. The last time I had this was in January when again I skipped breakfast. I ate an emergency nut Barr, went home and had soup and toast.

I think I'm going to have to plan in breakfasts. Which is ok I guess. Of to mfp to assess the damage....

PhoenixMama · 03/06/2019 17:55

Ahhhh I forgot how hungry it can be after eating off plan! Will be slightly over today but all pretty low carb so that's fine.

Dreading tomorrow with the funeral and I'm coming on early! High emotions & carb cravings will not be a good mix!

FurForksSake · 03/06/2019 19:39

I think sometimes you have to just go with the day, it might mean it takes you one more day to reach your goal, but only a day. I hope it is "ok" tomorrow, awful thing to go through but your friend obviously has some great support.

I had steak stor fry (spiralized courgette and carrot with red pepper, chilli, garlic, spring onions, broc and some gluten free soy sauce, cooked in raw coconut fat), it was lovely and really filling.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/06/2019 20:30

Good day food wise until I had a piece of MarioKart cake and a slice of pizza. It was always going to end that way!

Big sugar free detox starts tomorrow, I can't wait!
