Blood sugar diet and Fast800 thread 15

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/05/2019 07:34

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

That's day 1 done. Yogurt, eggs, mince. Salad. 800cals. 30g carbs. I know this works which takes some of the edge off, but doesn't make it easy.

MozzchopsThirty · 13/08/2019 19:09

I would kill for a biscuit right now
But I know I'd hate myself

lasttimeround · 13/08/2019 19:34

Biscuit = Not worth it.
I am impressed by your list of extra benefits from this diet mozzchops

MozzchopsThirty · 13/08/2019 19:57

@lasttimeround thank you
I'll add that my night sweats also seem to have gone hurrah

What does everyone eat when you just want a little something with a cuppa?
I haven't snacked in ages

ISmellBabies · 13/08/2019 21:35

What does everyone eat when you just want a little something with a cuppa?
Er, nothing!

MozzchopsThirty · 13/08/2019 22:08

🤣🤣 I didn't eat anything

Colourmylife1 · 13/08/2019 22:36

thenewaveragebear1983 thanks again for your very detailed and helpful answer. I think that I will ease up a little in the calorie restriction but follow the principles for a week or two and see what happens. I might then do a strict couple of Fast800 weeks to try to lose the last few kgs. I’ll keep following the thread for inspiration.

Morning all, just weighed in after another very good day yesterday and I'm now 10.4.8 which means a loss of about 5-6 lbs since Sunday. Very pleased with that! I didn't count calories yesterday but I did eat very low carb, and lots of fat so that may be why.

Today, I'm going for my long run and carrying on with my garden project (thankfully the heavy lifting work is done now and I'm just building two planters and buying some plants!) but I'm waiting til the rain stops! Meals with be an egg mayo salad for lunch and chicken wrapped in Parma ham with veg for dinner.

After day one I'm nearly 2 pounds down. Yes yes I know its water. But it helps. Eggs for lunch, dinner out at a seafood place.
Shopping later to stock up.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/08/2019 08:30

Last well done. Star

Hello everyone - very excited to be reading about all your losses! Still no WiFi at the new flat and now properly in battle with estate agents about the state of the place. Issues with my bf as well, needless to say I'm stressed and with no oven I can only grill or microwave so we're living on convenience food which sucks & frankly my body hates it. DD's birthday tomorrow, lunch out with her dad & stepmum on Friday then planning on getting back on track by Sunday. Hoping because I haven't been strict for 3 weeks I'll start losing again!

socksforfox · 14/08/2019 09:52

Following with interest

FastAway · 14/08/2019 12:26

Hello all, I just want to say hello and post here a bit for inspiration and accountability.

I have completely let myself go. As of yesterday I am 100kg. I am at very high risk of diabetes and after seeing my dads feet on holiday (type 2 and now on insulin) I feel sure he is going to end up with amputations in the next few years. I have to do something now and I feel totally motivated and committed. DH is along for the ride too as he is suffering back pain which is exacerbated by weight.

Eventual goal would be 75kg but I look fine and feel fine at 85 so going for that initially.

Day 3. I’ve been strictly following the plan and so far it’s been easy. First day at work today on plan and the day is racing by. Got a salad with falafel and an apple for lunch and mixed bean chilli for tea!

Ididit2019 · 14/08/2019 12:30

Fast away, I have seen three people affected by diabetes leading to amputation and sight loss. Prior to this I had underestimated the effect of diabetes so well done for starting this as I think we are sometimes swept more by how we look as a driving force rather than the effect on our health always.

Ididit2019 · 14/08/2019 12:33

For me my main motivation for starting was I was unhappy with how I looked, then when the weight loss occurred it my motivation to keep it off has been health and diabetes risk.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/08/2019 12:59

Welcome fastaway. The threat of T2 was what inspired me to start this as I had gestational diabetes 3 times and my consultant said my insulin control was so poor that in any situation of metabolic/hormonal stress (eg menopause) it's a case if not if but when. Plus I was so sick of being 'the fat one' in my dh's family, all the women are very naturally slim. Well now I'm the skinny one!!

I have discovered a new favourite food-sauerkraut! How did I not try this before?! I love vinegary pickley flavours, but for some reason had not tried SK. Yummy!!

Good afternoon all. Thanks bear for the tips.
Yesterday was under 800 calories and one hour on the elliptical. I felt a little hungry but was manageable. This morning I weighed myself and the scales show a loss of just under 1kg. But I expected that as I had been eating a lot of junk recently, so probably lost a lot of retained water.
Today I've done the elliptical for an hour first thing in the morning. So only the food choices to focus on today.
Thank you all for your inspiration.

FastAway · 14/08/2019 13:18

@thenewaveragebear1983 I have read through the whole thread and your dedication is amazing! What was your starting weight if you don’t mind me asking?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/08/2019 13:42

Fast I started way back in 2016 originally and I was 13.3, lost around 21lbs on the original 8 weeks BSD- but then life happened and i put a fair bit back on although I restarted countless times over about 18 months. Then in january 2018 I decided enough was enough, I promised myself another full 8 weeks at 800 calories and also we got a treadmill and I said I was going to do 10 minutes every day. So I went from around 12.10/ 13 stone to now 10.3. So not huge huge weightloss, but it's been significant for me. I do credit a fair bit of my success to running, as I've totally got the bug and even though I've not lost weight really in well over 6 months, my body shape has continued to change.

I've posted these before but I never get tired of posting them again!!

MozzchopsThirty · 14/08/2019 17:11

I am so sad that I have made a salad for my train journey tomorrow instead of eating crap 🙈

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/08/2019 17:34

Mozzchops that's not sad, that's amazing! I love a good salad
