Blood sugar diet and Fast800 thread 15

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/05/2019 07:34

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Phoenix bodies are definitely weird. There's an alternative school of thought that says our weight today represents our food 10 days ago, so maybe you are just seeing the benefits of something you did last week?? Anyway, don't knock it! I think you're right that sometimes a break can do you good both physically and psychologically.

I weighed in today at 10.5.5, which is actually a pound up from yesterday although around 6lbs down from the start of the week. I literally ache all over, a combination of heavy gardening work this week, a circuits class, and a hilly run yesterday- which is water retention, so today I'm drinking lots, and will have a nice easy day. Maybe check in with Adrienne and do some lovely stretchy yoga later!

Hi phoenix nice to see you here - that is weird. I'm always immediately up half a kilo with booze. I think weighing often enough to get a handle on how your body responds can help. I think you did great to have the chicken in the pasta place. I often do the inevitable cave in when actually there are options.
I'm still adjusting, realising I will need to get my carb count down to restrict to 800 cals. Slept like a baby tho. It's odd on this diet I have periods of night waking and then periods where I sleep much more deeply than I usually do.

Newtons3Laws · 16/08/2019 13:15

Day 4 today for me. Last 3 days I've been under 800 calories and low carb. I've also managed the elliptical trainer everyday and did a walk as well yesterday. I was so alert last night and barely slept! I'm feeling exhausted now but I'm determined to not cave in a eat carbs. I will do this! Might go for a walk later weather permitting.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/08/2019 14:06

I definitely find it does weird stuff to my sleep. I think as a long time insomniac I am just very switched on to sleep/sleep disturbances. As an aside, Since quitting dairy I am sleeping much better- not longed exactly, but more deeply and feeling more rested. Maybe coincidental?)

I've spent the morning making big Tupperware containers of chopped veg to go in the freezer- one with onion, garlic, celery and one with ginger, chilli, lemongrass, coriander, garlic and spring onion. Now I'm about to make two dips as I'm having a dinner party tomorrow- one is a carrot based one, the other a roasted aubergine and tomato one.

Going to Bills for brunch tomorrow..... my first big challenge!!! I’ve had a look at the menu and thinking perhaps the crab risotto which is 620 cals then just some broccoli soup in the evening. The Glow Bowl which I thought looked a good option was over 1100! There was also a kale salad which was about 900. Other option is the pea soup which is a starter but that seems a little joyless.....

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/08/2019 18:17

Gone rather over on calories today, so closing the kitchen on 1900 cals, about 65g carbs, hardly any steps (less than 10k for the first time this year I think!) - ooops! Haven't even really eaten that much, no snacks, just two big meals (and had 2nds without considering the calories, that's where it went wrong!) plus I hardly drank any water today where normally I drink gallons.

Feelingfortyisntfun · 16/08/2019 18:35

I sympathise with Bills fastaway. They used to do an omelette but no longer. I had the glow bowl and looked at the kcal when I got home and like you was shocked - it’s so easy to overeat I felt positively virtuous in comparison to the others yet would have even been better having a sausage! You could choose an option with bread and just leave the bread...

I am struggling with bread at the moment. We all have had baguettes for the last few days and in the evening I’m ravenous and will happily clear everyone’s scraps. I’m capable of eating vast portions.

I’m going to true fast 800 strictly when back at work. I really don’t want to be obsessed with food but do find it’s been dominating my thoughts a lot recently - maybe because breakfast has been reintroduced whilst away...

Feelingfortyisntfun · 16/08/2019 18:37

Sorry I dived in with my comments and got carried away. Hope you’re all doing well can’t wait to read about all your successes and challenges (let’s face it challenges are where and when we learn).

Also any ideas for treats for when we achieve a good day/week/fortnight? I think I need daily non food rewards !

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/08/2019 19:47

Feeling what is Bills? I've never heard of it!
For non food treats- could you reward yourself with beauty products or something like that? I like the Jo Malone copy things from Aldi, the candles and reed diffusers are lovely.
Plus I do food treats- I love cooking and so every now and then I'll cook up a proper feast eg, some really nice rib eye steaks with asparagus, or something like that.

OP posts:
lasttimeround · 16/08/2019 20:02

Done for the day 814cals. 24g carbs 89g protein. It's getting easier. Phew!
Id never heard of Bill's either. But they do sea bass, that without the rosti? I find veggie options are often hugely high cal, and too high carb for me altho fast800 ok I struggle even with higher carb veg.

Newtons3Laws · 16/08/2019 21:22

FastAway It is shocking how much of the restaurant food is so high calorie! Even choosing healthy options will easily go over 800 calories.
Finished today under 800 Calories and under 50g carbs. I'm finding I'm not too hungry and have to force myself to eat. And feeling very thirsty. Have also done one hour on the cross trainer and one hour walk.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/08/2019 21:35

If this place does brunch then your best option might be an actual breakfast (if they do one?) - bacon, egg, mushrooms etc. You may go over on calories but it will be all fat and protein. You'll be fine. It's one meal of one day. If it's one of these hipster places you might get some sort of avocado/egg combo, hold the toast, which might feel more special than a fry up! Or just ask (although at risk of looking like a total #lowcarbwanker ) for something suitable. Nowt wrong with asking for no chips/potato on a dish.

OP posts:
FastAway · 16/08/2019 21:51

Yes there is an avocado and egg option I might go for.

Terrible day at work today, lots of heartbreak and sadness, a very random row with a colleague and then DH coming in after a day at the cricket/pub with clients trying to tell me he was too busy after “work” to help tidy up..... so we’ve had a row too! Currently hiding upstairs. Don’t feel hungry though which is good.

DH has also lost eleven pounds THIS WEEK. Since Monday. Is that healthy?

For non food treat I am going for a lovely pedicure at the place with the massage chair tomorrow......

PhoenixMama · 17/08/2019 08:43

Oh Fast that sounds awful. Sending hugs. At Bills I either do breakfast or I do 2 starters like the halloumi fries and a salad and I'm always full after. The biggest food socket for me was Wagamama - so many of their healthiest sounding dishes come in at over 1000 cals!

lasttimeround · 17/08/2019 09:13

I hope today's better fastaway.
I'm down a pound today. Very happy. Makes it over my usual 2 pounds a week for the first week. I'm envious of everyone who loses more. Although 11 pounds seems insane I guess it depends on how much you have to lose.

FastAway · 17/08/2019 14:33

Thanks for hugs!! Apologies all round this morning and everything ok. Went for scrambled eggs and half slice of toast.... 400 cals but I think the toast has broken me and I am suddenly ravenous and feeling sick and empty. Have eaten 60g cheese and going for a nap now before more damage is done! Well done lasttime! That’s fab. Wondering if I should get on the scales on Monday after doing it for a week?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/08/2019 08:17

Morning all. I ate rather a lot yesterday and drank a fair bit of wine, although I'm hoping it won't be too dramatic on the scales as the food was generally good. I'm just working up the energy to go upstairs and weigh myself!

Today I need to write a menu and shopping list for the week ahead. This is the first full week of the summer hols where all the dc are here all week and Dh is at work, so there'll be various picnic lunches and other things going on, although I'm quite looking forward to a bit of normality!

Mazig · 18/08/2019 10:05

Hello. I would like to join this thread. To be completely accurate, I'm rejoining. I dId BSD and posted on here a couple of years ago, it was hugely successful and I kept it off for quite a while, but then work arrangements changed and over the last year, things have got progressively worse. So here I am again, new name, starting over.

This is day 6. I've lost 5.2 pounds and have 1 stone and 9 pounds to lose to get me to a reasonable level. I've been reading this since Tuesday, feel a bit embarrassed to be "rejoining" and my biggest fear is finding a way to maintain this. But I need to do it for physical and mental health reasons and to fit into my best jeans.

Looking forward to chatting with everyone.

PhoenixMama · 18/08/2019 11:15

Hey everyone, I'm supposed to be starting back up today but I broke up with my bf of 2 years last night & all I want to do is eat carbs & drink wine. Some of you might remember we took a break in May but got back together shortly after but now it's proper over & I'm so gutted. Any tips on how to manage the grief eating with Fast800?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/08/2019 11:17

Mazig welcome to the group. You've had a great start, well done!

I've done a damage limitation weigh in this morning, and I'm up a couple to 10.7, most likely as a result of wine last night not pudding, oh no, not me. I will officially weigh in tomorrow so that gives me today to redeem myself! Went for a quick run, blow out the cobwebs, and now going to crack in with some chores.

Did a Pilates class yesterday and I loved it, and feel very achy today like it did some good, so I am going to look for YouTube videos to try at home - any recommendations?

Shopping list and menu done- I need to have a freezer shuffle this week so a few miscellaneous Tupperwares are featuring- I know they'll be BSD friendly, but not necessarily dairy free so I might find when I open them I don't eat them, but it's pointless storing all these pots of dinners indefinitely! The downside of batch cooking!

Mazig · 18/08/2019 12:03

Hello Phoenix. We haven't spoken before but I just wanted to say I'm sorry. Grief/stress eating is my downfall. The only real thing that ever helped me is to try and feel angry rather than sad and focus on being strong and healthy in a kind of f**k you attitude. But it may be too early for that, so maybe just be as kind and gentle to yourself as you can.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/08/2019 12:24

Phoenix I missed your post there, sorry. I'm sorry to hear about your break up. I don't really have any suggestions, other than that if you genuinely think it might make you feel better to drink some wine and eat some cake, then do it. I know that's pretty rubbish advice from a diet perspective, but you're human.

Maybe allow yourself a few days grace, and don't use it as a stick to further whack yourself- but know/decide when you're going to stop and go back on track (because deep down you know that you don't want to go back to the old way of eating). You've done so well on this plan and in your recent stressful weeks, and I'd hate for you to spoil that, but at the same time, sometimes only chocolate will do. Maybe plan a nice walk in the sunshine to a shop a few miles away so you can make your purchase and at least that way you'll have had some fresh air? I'm sorry that's rubbish advice really.

OP posts:
Riddleofthesands · 18/08/2019 13:12

So sorry to hear that PhoenixMama. Seconding fresh air if you can, it might lift your spirits. Maybe try comfort movie, favourite sitcom rather than comfort food. It would be so easy to gain a half stone and it’s so damn hard to lose it. But whatever gets you through the heart break.

PhoenixMama · 18/08/2019 16:55

Thanks for the kind words, today is really sucking. I'm not really going to count today but then as of tomorrow I'm going to try to get back on the horse so to speak. I'll feel better if I'm losing weight and not eating a load of carbs has allowed me to deal with other stresses much better than normal so I'm gonna try to go back to being good. Will plan on some sort of run tomorrow as well so I can wake up with a focus.

Welcome to the group @Mazig! I don't think you ever have to feel bad about rejoining. Thanks for your suggestion as well but I don't want to be angry, I need to be positive and hopeful that this is the right decison and there's something more for me out there because of this choice. I also feel like life is full of pain so I need to learn how to eat properly regardless of what's going on in my life or I'll just cycle through bad habits. This WOE has totally transformed a lot of elements of my relationship to food, now I need to tackle the emotional side - not saying I ever think I'll have it beat but hopefully it won't have quite the same hold on me!
