BigChocFrenzy · 11/08/2018 13:51

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8 Smile

The 5:2 diet was introduced by Michael Mosely on BBC Horizon on August 2012:

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had Eating Disorders you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

ACRONYMS

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850- 1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated (see calculators below) from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to mainitain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips

  • WATER: Start each day with a glass of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, but on FDs count any milk / sugar calories.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back less than you burn. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.
Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Most prefer either to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper, or have 2 meals.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs, optionally reduce to 700 cals gradually.
You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are fine.
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • Plateau / Losing & regaining same few lb: Many folk have a plateau after losing 15 lb +, while their body rebalances.
It may also be a longterm "set point" weight, so homeostasis is causing your body to resist losing more fat. Just be patient & you'll break through. However, if this persists for 4 weeks+ then typically you are overeating on NFDs, so aim to average within TDEE - mfp for a week, to reality check.
  • Lots to lose - how to speed up weight loss
Optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight, but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week. This helps your body adjust to needing less food as you lose weight. Also trains you how to eat to maintain goal weight.
  • Do NOT fast: if you've ever had EDs, or if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting & Health

BBC article on the original Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

Fasting boosts "autophagy" = recycling of old cells
Yoshinori Ohsumi won the 2016 Nobel prize for Medicine for research into autophagy

Prof. R Taylor (Newcastle Uni) won the 2013 Diabetes UK Banting Prize for his Twin Cycle Hypothesis re the cause of type 2 diabetes: Twin Cycle Hypothesis T2
and showed a fasting diet could reverse T2

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials (consecutive FDs) with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

HORMESIS & Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Applications: J CellMetabolism
Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson (Mosely referred to his research) showed:

. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Brain metabolism in health, aging, andneurodegeneration :
"lifestyles that include intermittent bioenergetic challenges, most notably exercise and dietary energy restriction, can increase the likelihood that the brain will function optimally and in the absence of disease throughout life"

He compared 5:2 to ordinary daily diets on overweight women with family history of breast cancer.
Fasting group lost more belly fat, retained more muscle & had slightly better blood sugar regulation.

More of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease

His article in J Aging Mech Disease 2015 explains the health benefits of intermittent fasting in great scientific detail.

Bug - ah bless you. How things get better for you now.

Cherry - Welcome to the thread. 5lbs In 3 weeks is great. Is it a stone your looking to loose? If it is 5lbs has already made a bit dent in that. Glad to hear your love of fasting has returned.

I had a good second FD yesterday, still not quite down to happy weight yet but that’s ok. I think it’s going to be stressful for me over the next few weeks possibly months as looks like I have to take someone to court. Seems quite a straight forward process but does mean magistrates court and I know I won’t cope well with that. Must purchase some proper trousers very soon.

Good luck to everyone fasting today

mickeymacca · 27/09/2018 08:59

Yeh I got them quacking was a bit stressy for a bit though!!!

Fortythreeandfatasfuck · 27/09/2018 09:10

Morning everyone and welcome cherry
bug glad it was hood news, stress plays havoc on my belly too... strange, my mum was the same too.

font good luck weighing in but yes it can't be that bad if you are still in a 10, but it's all relative I know

Mmmm bcf your meal sounds lovely, anything that starts with masses of cheese is a winner Grin

Oh dear quacking that does sound stressful, good luck.

Nfd today and there will be cake at work as someone leaving. .. I get to choose it though so going to get something lovely that I want to treat myself to. No breakfast and a salad for lunch in anticipation of cake Cake hope everyone else has a good day

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 27/09/2018 09:30

Morning
Am keeping up with all your news even though I have nothing to post FD wise while I recover from this 'thing' that I have

Test results came back - not salmonella much to Drs surprise - no idea what it is, just that it's a virus of some sort
Have a dreadful cough now and feeling really unwell - like flu - Dr has given me antibiotics just in case it develops into chest infection as I have nothing to fight it with
Thought I had a UTI but test days no, Dr thinks it's my kidneys flushing out and rebalancing after the onslaught hence the really strong ammonia smell

Was really upset last night as was sick again with diarrhoea and worried it was all starting again (I had 11 days of it and could not bear the though of it returning) 🙈 but today seems ok so far...

Good luck to today's FDers

Stircrazyschoolmum · 27/09/2018 11:42

Morning all - hope everyone is feeling a bit better today?

Hello to cherry and cheddar I love this thread as it holds me accountable but never judges when I have a slip up!

Boris I NEED to know about your pudding night.. its a bit like GBBO.. I enjoy being a sadist! hounds if you have a recommendation for a written for idiots who burn everything simple cookbook then please share - or some fav recipes would be brilliant! I made veg fritters yesterday which were surprisingly delicious once I had gotten the thickness right, with the right spices they would be almost onion bahjis (yummmm!)

mickey did you get the tickets? I have an amazing friend who gets most of ours.. she has three or four screens all refreshing at the same time! Tonight we are off to see Kylie so I'm having a 'light' day to compensate for a glass of wine and something totally fattening less healthy for dinner.

BCF your meal sounded wonderful. I think the reason this WOL appeals to me is its possible to have everything in moderation its just about getting that balance right.

Have a good day everyone - glorious sunshine in London. :-)

DuggeesWoggle · 27/09/2018 12:25

Hello all, hope all the fasters are staying strong today. I usually fast on Sunday and Thursday but did Monday and Wednesday this week, both seemed easy enough this week (apart from several night wake ups from a spluttering toddler!). Getting a cold myself now so this morning's gym session was s bit slow.

Pudding night sounds awesome, not a major pudding fan usually but a taste of lots of different ones would be great.

Sorry to hear of your illness Jolly that sounds grim. Hopefully you're on the mend now.

Borris · 27/09/2018 14:53

Oh mrJ sorry you’re still not good. Hopefully the antibiotics will sort it, whatevers going on.

The pudding night was fab - there was an amazing chocolate mascarpone cheesecake with a dripping caramel topping, coffee cake, carrot cake, fruit tart, chocolate mousse, tiramisu, profiteroles......

I had the chocolate cheesecake thing which was divine and some tiramisu (and one sneaky profiterole!)

It all looked gorgeous. But something strange has happened... after my 2 allowed portions, I just didn’t fancy any more. I felt full. Before 5:2ing I could have definitely eaten 4 or even 5 portions. So maybe I have started resetting my normal?

Off for school run in a minute. Going to surprise dd with beach stuff in the car as it’s so gorgeous I think we’ll go down for an hour.

mickeymacca · 27/09/2018 15:06

Hi stircrazy "yes managed to get them In the pre sale yesterday woohoo!

BigChocFrenzy · 27/09/2018 17:17

What a blissful pudding experience Borris
Yes, sounds like your normal is being reset to some extent

I hope your cold goes soon, Duggee

OP posts:
Fortythreeandfatasfuck · 27/09/2018 19:54

Mmmm borris they all sound amazing.... well done on your restraint! Hope you enjoyed the beach

I was very restrained myself with cake at work, good job as dh brought a lovely cold pinot grigio home to have with dinner, he knew I wouldn't be able to resist but all within tdee. Saw 3 old work colleagues who were very complimentary about my weight loss, I actually felt a bit embarrassed Blush at the attention but a nice NSV all the same.

Fd2 tomorrow, anyone else joining me?

HLBug · 27/09/2018 20:26

mrjolly Thanks that sounds utterly miserable Sad I hope you feel better soon

Borris · 27/09/2018 20:35

I’m fasting tomorrow 43. I’ve cheated and bought a weight watchers ready meal.

BigChocFrenzy · 27/09/2018 21:01

Ready meals are fine, Borris Not cheating at all

OP posts:
Iamblossom · 28/09/2018 07:40

Morning all.

Finally at home today after my crazy week. Ate lunch in a pub on Tuesday, had a 440cal cottage pie but the veg looked suspiciously covered in butter... Had lunch in a steakhouse with MD on Wednesday , had a fennel and quinoa burger, left the bun, had a few of the chips and a tiny pot of coleslaw... Drinks with one of my teams Wednesday night, there was beer and too much wine and not much food... Felt rough yesterday and had to go back to London for a morning long meeting, had ordered a tuna salad but it got swiped so had three small baguette sandwiches and some Crisps!

All in all not a great set of non fast days in difficult circumstances where I have had little control of my food and have drunk too much.

Will try and have some cleaner days now before weigh in on Monday.

quackingduck222 · 28/09/2018 07:55

Mickey - That’s great news.

43 - That sounds lovely it’s always nice to have something you fancy than something forced on you. You’ve planned your day well.

Oh MrJolly that sounds so awful I really hope your on the road to recovery now. Flowers

StirCrazy- Hope you have a fantastic night and enjoy the concert and wine.

Well done Woggle for getting your FDs in already that’s great. Sorry to hear about your cold. The bugs seem to really be doing the rounds atm.

Borris - your pudding night sounds great. And what a fantastic thing to happen definitely sounds that you are resetting old with new habits.

43 - That’s awesome you were in under TDEE, goes to show wise calories doesn’t mean no treats. That’s lovely people noticed and were complementary, I struggle with what to say too it’s difficult.

Borris - That’s fine to have a ready meal, it’s not cheating at all.

DH has decided he wants to start eating healthier so asked me to start making soups / casseroles again packed with veg. I obliged last night and he’s been unwell ever since. Every single time I try something new for us to share that’s packed with veg this happens. Bloody men

Good luck for everyone today.

Fortythreeandfatasfuck · 28/09/2018 08:20

oh dear quacking maybe he's allergic to veg Grin

Got to the office to be greeted by all the leftover cake - as I'm the first one is, is it wrong of me to bin it??

iam sounds like a difficult few days, it sucks not being in control but hopefully you haven't done too much damage

borris what ready meal did you go for? I'm still trying to find one that I like that actually fills me up?

Fontrieu · 28/09/2018 08:34

Morning all.

Mr Jolly I hope you feel better soon, very strange that it is continuing for so long.

Norris and 43 I'm with you on the fasting today.

I weighed myself this morning, I am 8lb over my happy weight which is fine but I think I have changed my body composition so will probably move my happy weight downwards based on my clothes fit.
I'm not exercising as much so have lost muscle and gained fat, I will need to see a lower number on the scale to be comfortable in my clothes.
It's nowhere near as bad as I expected Smileso I'm going to aim for a stone and see what that feels like.
And I should go metric!

Good luck fasters!

Fontrieu · 28/09/2018 08:43

Sorry! *Borris

badger82 · 28/09/2018 08:47

64.7 this morning 👍🏻 4.7 to go!!

Fortythreeandfatasfuck · 28/09/2018 09:46

that's not bad at all font, you'll soon have that off

Excellent SV badger

BigChocFrenzy · 28/09/2018 09:52

Well done, badger

blossom The meals look Ok for days when you are out
so long as you didn't snack - and the booze is a work in progress Wink

duck Maybe you add certain spices that may be upsetting his tum, or to which he is unknowingly allergic.

I know someone who is allergic to pepper - the condiment, not the veg
Other allergies: aniseed, coriander, cumin, fennel, parsley,

It may be an allergy to certain veg: Onion, garlic, tomato, aubergine (eggplant), beetroot, cabbage, carrot, celery, cucumber, garlic, lettuce, mushroom, peppers,

I suggest you prepare a soup that only contains veg and spices that he has eaten as solid food

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 28/09/2018 09:58

That's not much weight to shift, Font, just feels more if it's in the wrong places

I suggest you work on the Happy Shape you want,
Waist is usually the basis of that - so be sensible about added sugar treats and alcohol

To help lose fat and firm up flabby bits:
try HIIT - e.g. Shred, spin, sprint intervals -
and lift weights; If you've no access to weights, no problem: pressups, plank, tricep dips on a step, bodyweight squats & lunges

OP posts:
Boysmomma · 28/09/2018 10:33

morning all, I've been very bold and was hoping to jump back in with you?

Weight hasn't moved, which is something, had a fast day yesterday and again today also that should hopefully get the weekend off to a good start!
