BigChocFrenzy · 11/08/2018 13:51

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8 Smile

The 5:2 diet was introduced by Michael Mosely on BBC Horizon on August 2012:

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had Eating Disorders you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

ACRONYMS

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850- 1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated (see calculators below) from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to mainitain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips

  • WATER: Start each day with a glass of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, but on FDs count any milk / sugar calories.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back less than you burn. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.
Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Most prefer either to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper, or have 2 meals.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs, optionally reduce to 700 cals gradually.
You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are fine.
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • Plateau / Losing & regaining same few lb: Many folk have a plateau after losing 15 lb +, while their body rebalances.
It may also be a longterm "set point" weight, so homeostasis is causing your body to resist losing more fat. Just be patient & you'll break through. However, if this persists for 4 weeks+ then typically you are overeating on NFDs, so aim to average within TDEE - mfp for a week, to reality check.
  • Lots to lose - how to speed up weight loss
Optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight, but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week. This helps your body adjust to needing less food as you lose weight. Also trains you how to eat to maintain goal weight.
  • Do NOT fast: if you've ever had EDs, or if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting & Health

BBC article on the original Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

Fasting boosts "autophagy" = recycling of old cells
Yoshinori Ohsumi won the 2016 Nobel prize for Medicine for research into autophagy

Prof. R Taylor (Newcastle Uni) won the 2013 Diabetes UK Banting Prize for his Twin Cycle Hypothesis re the cause of type 2 diabetes: Twin Cycle Hypothesis T2
and showed a fasting diet could reverse T2

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials (consecutive FDs) with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

HORMESIS & Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Applications: J CellMetabolism
Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson (Mosely referred to his research) showed:

. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Brain metabolism in health, aging, andneurodegeneration :
"lifestyles that include intermittent bioenergetic challenges, most notably exercise and dietary energy restriction, can increase the likelihood that the brain will function optimally and in the absence of disease throughout life"

He compared 5:2 to ordinary daily diets on overweight women with family history of breast cancer.
Fasting group lost more belly fat, retained more muscle & had slightly better blood sugar regulation.

More of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease

His article in J Aging Mech Disease 2015 explains the health benefits of intermittent fasting in great scientific detail.

onces? Ones

Summer15coming · 02/10/2018 22:40

I'm going to have to go to bed now because I'm starving! I'm really annoyed with myself because I forgot to log a yoghurt earlier, so have over-eaten by mistake for dinner. I was under yesterday, so the 2 cancel each other out (602 yesterday, 709 today) - but still!!!! I'm really cross!

BigChocFrenzy · 03/10/2018 00:12

summer you did really well, almost exactly1300 total for your b2b, right on target

Borris Your plan sounds good, especially if you can add mushrooms & tomatoes for veg

Breakfast sausages eaten out are usually calorie bombs, very fatty and fried in loads of oil - so avoid
Also avoid fried bread, hash browns, black pud.

You have such important revelations from mfp that have turned your habits around and boosted progress;
those 2 morning pastries would have calorie-bombed your weekends forever without mfp

That's a decent day, blossom as you only ate 4 times, managed some veg and no booze
Yup, that lb is probably just the WE catchup, so aim to make the next a sensible one, re booze especially

Argh! Ill in the night (diorhea, sorry) and my tum feels tender and bubbly, feel tired and a bit headachy. Had this for a week now, but just not ill enough to warrant going to the doctors?

Was due to have a series of meetings today in Swindon but didn't fancy a repeat experience half way up the M4 so have made them all phone calls instead.

quackingduck222 · 03/10/2018 08:01

Boys - That’s absolutely incredible. We must be twins, I’m 5ft 3 and large of nork and arse. It does make shopping a royal PITA so I feel your pain there.

43 - Good luck for your FD today, yep that’s the beauty about it you can just change days.

StirCrazy- Good luck to you aswell. Definitely worth trying those added iron tablets as they are a couple of pounds. They really have helped me as I bruise like a peach.

Cheddar- Hope you had a good FD.

Borris - I hope your B2B went well, definitely prefer lasagna done in the oven. I usually start it off in the microwave then oven it as I’m too impatient.

BCF - “Fridge pickers wear big knickers” Grin helps me motivate my snacking. Or
“ it’s only undigested food, a good poop and a FD will sort you out” Wink that makes me think of you BCF.

Blossoms that’s sacrilege cutting the fat off of the pork loin. Please send it to me. Smile hope you have a great day.

Borris - Your Food sounds awesome, you could always add tomatoes and mushrooms if you like them to really bulk it out for little calories.

Summer - You total adds up perfectly, 650 cals per day.

Good luck to everyone fasting today.

Iamblossom · 03/10/2018 08:08

Hey BCF

No hat tip required please but how about

BCF will come smacking if you start snacking - maybe combine it with fridge pickers wear big knickers (love that quacking)

Or

You are never alone whilst BCF has her drone

Keeping busy makes a fast day a fast day

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 03/10/2018 08:08

Managed a FD yesterday, have been struggling to get back in the saddle recently.
I've got 2 stone to lose so really need to get back on track with food and exercise!
Have stopped drinking for October.
12 weeks until Xmas - so 24lbs would be amazing! But would be happy with a stone at this point Smile
Good luck all Wednesday fasters 🙌🙌🙌

Borris · 03/10/2018 08:45

67 kg exactly this morning. I was hoping to be below my lowest ever weight since starting 5:2 (66.9) but I’m nearly there. Plus I normally weigh every weds after b2b mon and Tuesday but last week I did mon and fri FDs so I last weighed in on Saturday.

Next weds I will smash the 66’s 🤞🏻

MazDazzle · 03/10/2018 09:15

Checking in for day 1 of b2b. Anyone else fasting today?

Didn’t fast on Monday as planned, as it was cold and rainy and I just couldn’t face it!

I’ll check in again later to make sure I stay on track.

Boysmomma · 03/10/2018 09:15

Good luck today, I'm on day one of B2B FD, Friday has several meetings and an in house lunch so I've moved it back a day. I've also opted for GF option so they'll leave out the bread etc Blush feel like an awful CF.

I have a curry for lunch packed with veg (water and curry powder) hoping it's enough flavour. Skipping breakfast so fingers crossed today goes as planned!

@lam I hope you're feeling better soon! Yes best to avoid motorways and stay within arms reach of a toilet for now Grin

@quacking stripper chic will come into fashion and we'll be golden! Can I ask a cheeky question where do you get your jeans? I end up going up a size just to fit my arse then they don't fit my waist and keep slipping. Very frustrating!

@smiled I didn't even think of that! 2 lbs a week is doable and that would bring me so close to my interim target. Oh I can't wait for the roller coasters Grin

quackingduck222 · 03/10/2018 09:29

Boys - For jeans I usually shop
In Asda as they are cheap and have quite a bit of stretch.

For bootcuts I wear these most days as there £10 and are really flattering. I order in short length and there spot of for me at 5ft 3

direct.asda.com/george/womens-jeans/bootcut-jeans/G005943627,default,pd.html

For skinnes I swear by Asda Wonderfit they have lots of stretch but hold everything in. If you loose weight bang them in the washing machine and they basically reset themself size wise.

direct.asda.com/george/womens-jeans/wonderfit-black-skinny-jeans/G005399234,default,pd.html

I also love primarks I think there called high waisted super skinny jeans. £10 stretchy and very flattering on the tummy.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 03/10/2018 10:11

BCF will come smacking if you start snacking 😂😂😂

Blossom that is brilliant, proper made me laugh!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 03/10/2018 10:35

Meant to post last night and forgot - finished yesterday on 471 calories (I never know how much olive oil to account for. If DH puts a generous slug into the frying pan, obviously some of it transfers to the salmon, but there's still plenty left in the pan, so what do I call it on MFP? I ended up saying it was half a tablespoon of oil). 0.6lb down this morning but I really didn't drink much water yesterday so I'm hoping that more attention to that today will result in a whoosh.

Spent most of the evening doing DIY plumbing to try to unblock the kitchen sink after discovering that the dishwasher hadn't drained properly and the sink was only draining at a trickle. Much fiddling with pipes later and it is improved but still not right. May have to give in and call an actual plumber, drat!

I love BCF will come smacking if you start snacking!

Good luck on your B2B, Boys and Maz!

Hope you start feeling better soon, blossom!

BigChocFrenzy · 03/10/2018 11:42

OK, looks like we have a consensus about the next title
You've all clearly digested my mottos and have The Fear I'll catch you snacking ! Grin

Blossom Sorry to hear about your tum. Hope that clears up soon.
I did warn you < smack > that fasting can worsen or restart symptoms of an upset tum
So no fasting until next Monday, or 5 days after all symptoms fo, whichever is later

Well done on your FD, cheddar
Rule of thumb for cooking in oil: shallow frying, well-drained - allow 1 tbsp oil, so about 90 cals

Well done for getting back into fasting, smiled and dry October
If you focus on FD & NFDs too, sensible about treats, then a stone before Christmas looks doable
Monitor your waist too, because that is important for shape & health and the inches loss is motivating.

Borris You're on your way to lowest weight
mfp has given you insight, so stay focused as you are doing and you'll smash through that milestone.

Today is a Public Holiday here, the Day of German Unity
so I've just finished a spin special.
It was excellent: 10 Tabatas of standing spin with hand weights, then finishing with a quick abs blast
I did it fasted. NFD, so I'll have a good lunch later

Good luck to maz, boys and all the other Wednesday fasters

boys It's fine to choose the GF option; it's only dodgy if you claim to be sensitive to gluten. Just say - if anyone is nosy (and rude !) - you wanted a day without bread and / or fancied the GF menu.
Just avoid any muffins, biscuits etc if they are offered too.

btw, did you check what the GF menu is ?
they might just swap the bread to GF, which usually has just as many cals & carbs as ordinary bread !

Stircrazyschoolmum · 03/10/2018 12:25

Morning all!

I’ve just made my first frittata! It was yummy and I’m stuffed (NFD) but I reckon with a couple of tweaks it would be a great FD dinner. (2 eggs, Mushrooms, cherry toms, red onion, spinach) For some reason a couple of diced new potatoes and a smidge of cheese makes it taste completely different to an omelette?

smiled I’m doing sober October too - so far, so good but it’s early days!

BCF a big thumbs up from me on the new thread name and happy holidays, it sounds like you are making the most of it!

borris you will be in the 66’s in no time, I hope you enjoyed your breakfast.

iam avoiding the motorway sounds very sensible. Perhaps some probiotics would help? When my kids have tummy issues I put them on the (aptly named) BRAT diet for 24-48 hours (Banana, Rice, Apple, Toast) it seems to rest their tummies a bit and get things back to normal.

quacking I’m with you.. the fat on a pork chop is the best bit!

Stay strong today’s fasters. xxx

snailhunter · 03/10/2018 13:29

Hello all! Lovely to see some 5:2 veterans here like iam, quacking and 43 - plus BCF of course!

I've had a successful three months maintaining at around 9st 10lb since losing just over a stone on 5:2 earlier this year. However, jumped on the scales today (weighing fortnightly now) and am now 10st 1! So have decided to get back on the fasting express and see if I can shift those pounds to get back down to Happy Weight of 9st 10-12lb, or maybe below.

I know what's done it - it's been a stressful time. My mum had a cancer scare and a major op in September and I've been a bit all over the place. Luckily she is now recovering well and it turns out she doesn't have cancer, hooray. Her surgeon and anaesthetist both told her how pleased they were to be operating on a 72-year-old woman who is a healthy weight. Apparently it makes a big difference! So it was good to be reminded that maintaining a healthy weight isn't just about how you look

BigChocFrenzy · 03/10/2018 14:18

Wecome back, snail Lovely to see you again
Time now to chill and fast after that stressful time.
What a relief for you that your mum is ok - and reassuring that she was also praised for her healthy weight.

When you get down to Happy Weight Range this time, I recommend you consider a longterm maintenance plan;
in your case 6:1 or daily 16:8 would probably suffice.

OP posts:
Summer15coming · 03/10/2018 14:36

Hope you're feeling a bit better now, Iam? Well done for getting back into it, Smiled. We're weight twins, Snail. I'm also 10 st 1, looking at 9 st 10 as initial target (I'll probably then plateau for a while as I tend to hang around there) and then maybe another 6 lbs further. That's as much as I suit now that I'm in my forties, I think, but I'll see when I get there.

I'm on my first properly planned full TDEE day today for a while. I'm finding it slightly odd!

Borris · 03/10/2018 15:25

Thanks for the breakfast support. I nearly had a wobble (“eat as much as you can to get your money’s worth “) but i managed to reign it in Smile

So I had 4 rashers of bscon, 2 fried eggs, some mushrooms, 2 tomato halves and a bowl of fruit salad. With a pot of tea.

I make that about 630 cals according to google. So hopefully no damage done

snailhunter · 03/10/2018 16:01

Thanks for the welcome back and hello Summer! I am 44 and starting to feel the menopause creeping up - have been having lots of sweats over the last few months, and haven't had a period since July either. Am very determined not to let it affect my weight, as I'm very much enjoying being a healthy one!

Cheers for the good wishes BCF. Yes, I think I will go on 6:1 once I've got rid of these last few pounds. I thought I'd sort it now as it's just a few pounds over rather than putting my head in the sand and pretending it's not a warning sign. I did have a go at 16:8 but I found it a bit too intrusive, if you see what I mean - I love 5:2 because you don't have to think about it every day (and the NFD rules just become a habit.)

Enjoying a healthy NFD today before my fast day tomorrow - Thursdays and Mondays worked very well for me last time so I'll stick to those.

BigChocFrenzy · 03/10/2018 16:48

Sounds delish, Borris and a sensible hearty brunch

Smiled- Well done for ditching the booze for October it will be interesting to see if this helps your losses. Well done for your FD.

Go Borris rooting for you.

Maz - I hope day 1 of your B2B went well.

Cheddar - Well done on your FD.

StirCrazy- That frittata sounds good, I love this but have never made them. Do you make it in the same way as a omlette?

Snail - Good to see you, pleased things have calmed down for you. That will be off in no time. A couple of good FDs behind you should see you right again.
Then once your where you want to be 6:1 works well for maintaining.

FD today here, anyone else fasting?

BigChocFrenzy · 04/10/2018 09:42

Good luck, 43 Have lots of protein and veg, to help feel fuller.
