Fasting / 5:2 diet

blood sugar diet thread 5

Continuing thread for Blood Sugar Dieters:
Phase 1 lasts 2 - 8 weeks and involves restricting calories to 800 a day. Eating healthy fats is encouraged as is limiting carby foods (no specific guideline on this but some people aim for under 50g), small amounts of complex carbs are allowed but should be balanced ideally with green veg, protein and fat to lower the glycemic load and reduce the effect on blood sugar.

Tips
You may get headaches at first so drink lots of water, possibly try mixing a teaspoon of marmite into boiled water and having that to replenish salts etc
Exercise: aim for 10,000 steps a day and ideally consider adding in resistance training and some HIIT workouts.
Fasting some people find it helpful to have an eating window e.g 14:10 – 14 hours fasting and 10 hours to fit in the 800 cals. Avoid snacking and grazing - split your calories into 2 or 3 meals for potentially better weightloss.
Use the menu plans in the book or plan ahead on My fitness pal app

Foods to avoid
Sugar, sweets, milk chocolate, biscuits, cake
White bread, pasta, rice, chips etc
Processed Junky food with added sugar
Alcohol, fizzy drinks, juice etc
Diet foods, artificially low fat foods
High sugar fruit

Foods to eat
Full fat Natural/ Greek yoghurt
Fish in particular oily fish, Meat, eggs, nuts seeds
Non starchy veg, cauliflower, leafy greens, avocados, peppers, tomatoes, broccoli etc
Olive oil, coconut oil, rapseed oil
Berries and low sugar fruit (2 portions or less)
Lentils, beans etc

Foods to include in small amounts and be careful of
Full fat dairy is fine but some people do better with less of this
Starch veg such as sweet potatoes and squash
Wholegrains (quinoa, buckwheat etc) limit to 2 tablespoons
Low carb crackers and breads made with coconut flour, almond flour etc

Phase 2/ 3
for more sustainable continued weight loss and then maintenance add in some days with higher calories but still lower carbs, and have 2 – 5 days at 800 calories. Continue to avoid processed simple carbs like white bread, chocolate etc but possibly add in small amounts of dark chocolate and red wine or less sugary alcohol if you wish to.

Had an afternoon snack of salad, cheese and walnuts and dinner was a large field mushroom with salad

Not a very inspiring day but I came in at 800 cals again so that's ok. I'm going to try and eat a larger variety tomorrow. I've got some Lavash bread on order so that'll help as I'll make them into huge 200 cal pizzas

The recipe book says 1 medium cauliflower makes 4 servings of 30 calories each.

You are all doing really well everyone.

23lbs! Wow!! How active are you yumyum?

Report
yumyumpoppycat · 04/11/2016 16:36

Hi, I am moderately active try to workout; prob average out about 3 times a week at least. I was strict and averaged out at 900 cals a day pretty consistently over those 8 weeks. I didnt really count carbs but didnt drink at all and tried to eat more veg and more healthily. I think others have lost similar amounts. I tend to regain 4 to 7lbs if I go 'on holiday' and then get back to it so am only 10 -14 lbs lighter than that now and its a good 10 months now, so I guess lots of people would lose the same 35 lbs more slowly, without giving things up etc and be at the same point as me now. Worked for me though, I had been struggling to lose significantly for years and years and am now at a healthy weight, size 12 comfortably etc.

One thing that worked for me was eating as early as possible and having small dinners then just cups of tea in the evening.

Morning all

Came in at 860 calories for yesterday, trying to be strict this weekend for my second weigh in on Monday morning! I lost about 8/9 lbs in week one and I'd be happy with a 4lb loss for this week - hopefully that's not too ambitious?

I can't exercise at the moment bar walking. I've had a cough and chesty thing for over a month now which is lingering so if I was to exert myself it would be cough City!

I've started my day with a bulletproof coffee and a protein bar - 252 calories spent so far

Just had chicken, rice and spinach before going out, so hopefully avoiding pizza and crisps will be easier...

Marking my place. I am 13st 3lbs Blush. I have worked out I have 7 weeks between and christmas so wont manage the full 8 weeks. I plan to do 7 weeks followed by a break from christmas eve to boxing day and then back on it.

I only want to lose 8lbs but this is ALL around my middle, so figure this is the only diet that may work!

Well done on dorito refusal Beyond Grin they are ridiculously moreish.

Good luck on first day mumbo! and good luck for mon tattered.

Lucy you might be better off doing a week of 800s followed by however many weeks of alternating between higher cal days and 800 days. App 5:2 is good for getting rid of tummy fat. I find 5:2 harder to stick to than straight 800s weirdly but different for everyone.

Beyond, I like that drop the carbs website : I'm going to try the roast a whole cauliflower recipe.

Yum yum, you're stats are incredible. I never lost that much, and have now put on. I do feel quite bloated and yuk ATM.
Must remember to drink more water less wine!!

mumbo this diet is definitely good for losing fat from round your middle. It was the first place I noticed a big difference.

I had a good NSV yesterday. I have a size 10 playsuit that I haven't been able to wear for years but yesterday I thought I'd try it on and it fits Grin

However, we then held a fireworks party where I drank lots of wine and champagne; and ate pizza, crisps and cookies. It was probably the most alcoholic night I have had since starting BSD in April and the problem is that alcohol makes me snack. I think I'll need to avoid the scales till about Wed.

Welcome coulditbe ! Flowers
Best advice I have is: menu plan; try to stick to around 50g carbs; if you get headaches drink more. Good luck!

Could - same as me. I'm not pre diabetic but I have a weight problem. I'm a very chubby size 12 and I'd like to be a comfortable size 10.

Today I've had

Yogurt pear and pumpkin seeds

Avocado, mushrooms, cucumber , tomatoes

Have 183 cals left so it'll be soup, a protein shake or a protein bar later on

Second weigh in tomorrow
