Fasting / 5:2 diet

blood sugar diet thread 5

yumyumpoppycat · 15/10/2016 17:12

Continuing thread for Blood Sugar Dieters:
Phase 1 lasts 2 - 8 weeks and involves restricting calories to 800 a day. Eating healthy fats is encouraged as is limiting carby foods (no specific guideline on this but some people aim for under 50g), small amounts of complex carbs are allowed but should be balanced ideally with green veg, protein and fat to lower the glycemic load and reduce the effect on blood sugar.

Tips
You may get headaches at first so drink lots of water, possibly try mixing a teaspoon of marmite into boiled water and having that to replenish salts etc
Exercise: aim for 10,000 steps a day and ideally consider adding in resistance training and some HIIT workouts.
Fasting some people find it helpful to have an eating window e.g 14:10 – 14 hours fasting and 10 hours to fit in the 800 cals. Avoid snacking and grazing - split your calories into 2 or 3 meals for potentially better weightloss.
Use the menu plans in the book or plan ahead on My fitness pal app

Foods to avoid
Sugar, sweets, milk chocolate, biscuits, cake
White bread, pasta, rice, chips etc
Processed Junky food with added sugar
Alcohol, fizzy drinks, juice etc
Diet foods, artificially low fat foods
High sugar fruit

Foods to eat
Full fat Natural/ Greek yoghurt
Fish in particular oily fish, Meat, eggs, nuts seeds
Non starchy veg, cauliflower, leafy greens, avocados, peppers, tomatoes, broccoli etc
Olive oil, coconut oil, rapseed oil
Berries and low sugar fruit (2 portions or less)
Lentils, beans etc

Foods to include in small amounts and be careful of
Full fat dairy is fine but some people do better with less of this
Starch veg such as sweet potatoes and squash
Wholegrains (quinoa, buckwheat etc) limit to 2 tablespoons
Low carb crackers and breads made with coconut flour, almond flour etc

Phase 2/ 3
for more sustainable continued weight loss and then maintenance add in some days with higher calories but still lower carbs, and have 2 – 5 days at 800 calories. Continue to avoid processed simple carbs like white bread, chocolate etc but possibly add in small amounts of dark chocolate and red wine or less sugary alcohol if you wish to.

If I want to do this for health rather than weight loss, is it just as simple as eating the same food but maintenance calories?

I exercise quite a lot (not an athlete or anything, but more than average), should I include some whole grain carbs?

Well I survived day 2 doing it properly - ham, feta and falafel salad for lunch, steamed salmon and pak choi for tea , coming in at 765 calories and 37g carbs. Probably should have had something else to bring it up to the 800 calories mark, but I went over yesterday, plus I want to get out of the habit of snacking.

And more impressively, no Diet Coke or wine for two days - this maybe shouldn't be an achievement, but sadly it is!

Artemis it might be worth posting your question on the 5:2 thread as big choc on there knows a lot about the research around fasting for health benefits etc. My guess would be that adopting the mediteranean diet will give you health benefits but having 1 or 2 days at or under 800 calories could also give you health benefits of fasting as well.

Beyond what surgery are you having? well done on your good start to the diet.

diamental - the book says it is fine to be under 800 occasionally its more about the balance over the week. If you have my fitness pal android version it can show you how your calories average out over the week which can be useful for this diet. well done sounds like a great day's food.

I had a baaad day yesterday just trying to protect my kids from their trick or treat sweets I didnt weigh but my weight had come down a little yest am and I have a good feeling about today as started it iff with a green omelette and have done an exercise dvd.

waves to everyone, enjoy the sunshine :)

Hello all,

Well done on all your losses so far! I decided to try this diet in the hope of losing 2 stone, I've lost 9lbs so far in the past week or so. Would really like the remainder off by Christmas - do we think this is doable?

Slightly trickier for me as a vegetarian but I've been doing ok I suppose. I've done low carb before but what I like about this is that it also limits the calories. I was eating too much beforehand I think

Anyway a typical day for me is ..

2 large tbspns full fat Greek yogurt with 10g walnuts and half a chopped apple plus a black coffee with a teaspoon of butter in it and whizzed up

100g quorn fillets with salad and 30g feta cheese, sprinkling of pumpkin seeds

Tablespoon of peanut butter with a stick of celery

Small bowl of soup/ Purition protein shake/ salad and cottage cheese - that kind of thing

Sticking strictly to the 800cals a day and once I'd got used to the much reduced portions, I was ok

I've started the day today with my bulletproof coffee and yogurt/apple and walnuts and lunch will be cottage cheese with pumpkin seeds, cucumber, tomatoes, peppers and two Brazil nuts

Any other vegetarian ideas anyone?

It's a rectocele repair, been waiting years for it Grin (though I am bloody terrified now it's getting close!! 😬)

Had to have muesli for breakfast as I'm waiting for the shopping to come. Not ideal but at least it's good carbs.

Beyond I had to google! Hope it all heals well and quickly.

9lbs is amazing tattered! 2 stones is possible, think it depends how much you weigh now. The rapid weightloss usually stops after the first 2 weeks and slows down to about 2lbs a week I think. I had weeks where it inched down slowly every day but also the odd week where I stayed the same,

Cracked yesterday and had a Diet Coke. But only one which I still count as an achievement!

Yesterday was a prawn salad for lunch, chicken with pesto creme fraiche and salad for tea, with some houmous and carrot sticks as a snack - came in almost dead on 800 calories.

Today's lunch is the same, but with tandoori lamb and veg for tea.

I'm finding it fine during the week but the weekend will be the challenge - I've got a meal out with friends, plus it's usually when I'll crack open the wine. Will have to do what I can and hope it doesn't undo the week's good work!

Hi everyone, I am losing a bit again so now down to 67.9kg. I have lost nearly 10kg since starting this on Sep 1st. I am maintaining/losing a little until Christmas now, hoping to be 65-64kg by Christmas and then I will do a new strict 8weeks attempt in January in order to shift the last stone. It feels doable.
I feel for the first time that I am in complete control of eating, even now, going through a major family trauma I do not use food for emotional reasons. This really is a first for me and I am so proud.

I love the light feeling on this diet and my mind has so much more clarity. I used to walk around with so much mind fog, but I know feel really sharp mentally. My productivity at work has rocketed too.

For me the absolute key is carbs. I had no idea how bad they were for my mental and emotional wellbeing. I feel so much better without them in my life. I am dipping in and out of here at the moment and hoping that is ok, then I will come back and join you properly after Christmas again.

Lndn this is so true. I notice it both physically and mentally if I overdo carbs now.

Ok, day 4 not going too badly. Not cheated yet, hooray!

I want to attempt cauliflower rice but I'm flummoxed by the vague portion guidance in my BSD recipe book - does anyone know how much cauliflower makes up 1 serving please?

MFP hasn't come up with any numbers, just "1 serving is 30 cals" or the other entry I saw was "1 serving is 60 cals" Hmm

Lunch plans changed as tattoo appt ran over, so I only had an apple and sparkling water. So that now leaves me enough calories to have salmon, quinoa and spinach for dinner :)
