Fasting / 5:2 diet

blood sugar diet thread 5

yumyumpoppycat · 15/10/2016 17:12

Continuing thread for Blood Sugar Dieters:
Phase 1 lasts 2 - 8 weeks and involves restricting calories to 800 a day. Eating healthy fats is encouraged as is limiting carby foods (no specific guideline on this but some people aim for under 50g), small amounts of complex carbs are allowed but should be balanced ideally with green veg, protein and fat to lower the glycemic load and reduce the effect on blood sugar.

Tips
You may get headaches at first so drink lots of water, possibly try mixing a teaspoon of marmite into boiled water and having that to replenish salts etc
Exercise: aim for 10,000 steps a day and ideally consider adding in resistance training and some HIIT workouts.
Fasting some people find it helpful to have an eating window e.g 14:10 – 14 hours fasting and 10 hours to fit in the 800 cals. Avoid snacking and grazing - split your calories into 2 or 3 meals for potentially better weightloss.
Use the menu plans in the book or plan ahead on My fitness pal app

Foods to avoid
Sugar, sweets, milk chocolate, biscuits, cake
White bread, pasta, rice, chips etc
Processed Junky food with added sugar
Alcohol, fizzy drinks, juice etc
Diet foods, artificially low fat foods
High sugar fruit

Foods to eat
Full fat Natural/ Greek yoghurt
Fish in particular oily fish, Meat, eggs, nuts seeds
Non starchy veg, cauliflower, leafy greens, avocados, peppers, tomatoes, broccoli etc
Olive oil, coconut oil, rapseed oil
Berries and low sugar fruit (2 portions or less)
Lentils, beans etc

Foods to include in small amounts and be careful of
Full fat dairy is fine but some people do better with less of this
Starch veg such as sweet potatoes and squash
Wholegrains (quinoa, buckwheat etc) limit to 2 tablespoons
Low carb crackers and breads made with coconut flour, almond flour etc

Phase 2/ 3
for more sustainable continued weight loss and then maintenance add in some days with higher calories but still lower carbs, and have 2 – 5 days at 800 calories. Continue to avoid processed simple carbs like white bread, chocolate etc but possibly add in small amounts of dark chocolate and red wine or less sugary alcohol if you wish to.

Half term and this bloody mega cold have really thrown me. Not too bad in the day but needed wine. Made a nice cold remedy from ginger, star anasie and cloves did wonders to cue my hankering for a pre bonfire night mulled wine.
Nuts are a problem as my friend has bought me a huge bag as a thank you. I haven't touched the Haribo's she bought for DS but maybe I should have ...less calories.
Very annoyed have a nice new dress for this weekend which didn't fit when I tried it yesterday. Now I'm thinking I shall just drink wine and start again tomorrow. Which is rubbish.

Fantastic Aplace that is a big milestone Grin how much have you ost now?

Welcome reveal - nuts are on plan so prob better to go over cals on those than under with haribo, also you can freeze some maybe? The thing with sweets is that they might be low in calories but could set off lots of other cravings.

Welcome back newaverage hope all going well!

Pfrench you have done brilliantly maintaining. I havent been sticking to plan and paid with a couple of lbs gain this week. I have had flapjack from the work canteen twice and it seems to make my blood suagr crash really badly (not using a monitor just how I feel - sweaty and sick) find this weird as usually I am ok wih flapjacks - maybe it's a low fat one or something daft. Anyway happy that I am still under 138lbs but feeling bloated and stodgy so going to get back on it a bit more.

yumyum I've lost over 2.5 stones; 20 inches; BMI has gone from obese to healthy and clothes from a size 16 to size 10/12. I felt stuck for the last month but it seems I was losing inches from my arms so that was heartening Smile

Oblomov I was back into my BSD routine because the schools were back. I find I walk more and eat less when I'm doing the school run and working in the office. I've had an ill DC this week so my routine has gone to pot and I've not been as strict. Hopefully, I'll be able to get back on it next week. I can't even bear to count the weeks till Christmas because I feel like I have tonnes to do before then Shock

Wow, well done aplace, especially on the inches. and for keeping going when the scales were stuck.

Not sure either oblomov but I would like to lose a few lbs by Christmas too! Pure vanity but I want to wear a sparkly size 10 dress at xmas. It was so hard to find something nice for the work christmas party last year, I bought a flattering stretchy dress in the end that looked ok but nothing in my wardrobe fitted. I think being in losing mode before christmas will hopefully mean I start January no bigger than I am now whereas planning to maintain could see me relax to much and significantly up after christmas.

Not done that well cal wise today but onwards and downwards ;)

Hi everyone, can I join you all, read all the threads on here to get motivated, bought the book and starting tomorrow,
Checked my bmi on NHS calculator and it said I needed to lose 2st 4lb to just be in healthy weight range!, I'm 45, 5ft 2 and weigh 12st 3lb,
I have gained 2 stone since January 2016 after starting beta blockers for migraine, so none of my clothes fit and I feel unhealthy, lacking in energy and uncomfortable, so here goes - good luck to everyone!

Also the weight has gone on with arrival of peri menapause, so has anyone done the Diet and seen any improvements in menapause symptoms like fatigue, hot flushes, night sweats, achey joints, insomnia, low mood and anxiety?

Ok, so my big relaunch didn't exactly happen as planned, and it's dd's birthday today- but I've just actually struggled to find a pair of jeans that fit so Sunday -tomorrow- I am going back on it. 8 weeks til Christmas? A stone off in that time? I know that's doable on this plan so long as I actually do the plan!!!!
Life is so stressful at the moment, I've just been comfort eating and quite frankly not caring. But it's got to stop. Aside from the extra pounds, God I feel so unhealthy, my skin is rubbish and I feel so sluggish and demotivated.
I know I'm a stuck record and every time I come to this thread I say the same but this time I mean it!!!!

Nomi I think BSD helps with mood and energy levels. I'm not sure about the impact on night sweats. BSD does affect hormone levels but that has caused different effects for different people.
Gosh bear your have so much going on. Try not to be too hard on yourself. Flowers
Happy birthday to DDbear too.

Thanks aplaceonthecouch, your results are amazing! And very inspiring, do you mind me asking what your typical 800 calorie day looks like? Like everyone I'm really busy but also based at home a lot of the time so temptation is always nearby!

I've never really been a breakfast person so the most I will eat in the morning is a handful of nuts (usually almonds tbh) or an omelette. If I'm in the office, then lunch is either soup or salad (goat's cheese and salmon with lemon is one of my favourite salads but I'll also have tuna or sliced turkey). I have a wide repertoire of soups Grin
Dinner can be a chicken curry (the chicken and red pepper curry from the BSD website is great) or a steak stir fry. Snack would be hummus and carrot/cucumber; and/or 2 squares of dark chocolate.
When I started, I tried lots of recipes from the book and the website but I have become a bit lax about trying new ones.

Breakfast always tricky for me so like the idea of a handful of nuts.
First day not perfect as big shop being delivered tomorrow so today it was a case of using up what was in and concentrating on keeping calories as best to 800 as possible,
Breakfast porridge and goats milk (200 cakes)
Lunch scrambled eggs and 25g sourdough (200 cakes)
2 cups coffee
Fish and potatos (400)
Pleased with that - realise it very carb heavy and lacking in veg etc but shop arrives tomorrow and I can get bit more creative!

Calories not cakes! Bit of a Freudian slip I reckon! 200 cakes is what got me here - (note to self must proof read posts!)

Hi everyone, have had a terrible few weeks with bad health news family wise so hve fallen off the wagon for about 3 weeks. However, and this is a miracle. i am now 68kg, so I have lost a little and more importantly maintained whilst "off the wagon". I think this means that my off the wagon is no longer as bad as they once were. My eating has definately changed for the better.

Now what do I do? I still have 10kg to lose, do I start the 8weeks again from the beginning? Any advice would be most welcome.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 30/10/2016 09:08

Lndn sorry your family had bad news Flowers
The book is unclear on what to do if you still need to lose weight after the 8 weeks. Some posters have just gone back to the beginning again; some are doing BSD for 5 days then 2 'treat' days; some are reintroducing certain foods but keeping cals and carbs low. It seems to be a process of trial and error.

Sorry to hear you have had some upsetting news lnd.

Really good you have been maintaining though, hopefully that means you could add in some bsd days and lose without necc needing 7 full bsd days? Maybe do 2 weeks at 800 then reassess and increase cals or carbs or switch to a 5:2 version. Agree with aplace its a case of experimenting to find what works for you. I have been off the wagon and gained a bit so need to get back to losing myself. I am at the stage where I feel I could still lose more but my sister

Morning all. I'm back! I'm not calorie counting but I'm going to try a no sugar low carb week to get back on track. Today so far i have had milk in coffee and have just had a little platter of cooked ham, olives and cheese for lunch.
I need to go back and reread the thread tonight

Thanks guys for your support. I am going to maintain for a couple of weeks using the very low carb method that I have used whilst on BSD. I will maintain by upping calories rather than carbs. I will then after a few weeks go back down to 800 cal to see if I can shift the last 10kg. I am half away there but just need a break to deal with other stuff. I am happy that I have been able to maintain comfortably despite being in deep distress. It is the carbs for me for sure.

Right, well day one, here we go. Starting weight 10st 13lbs - would love to be under 10 stone for Christmas but realistically things are going to get in the way so I'll take a move in the right direction and finishing the year on less than I am now! And ideally getting to the point that I can do up the suit jacket I was wearing today - it definitely used to fit....

Day one hasn't gone brilliantly as I had a networking lunch thing and the only thing on offer was calorie-laden sandwiches - and I couldn't avoid them without looking very ungrateful. So I nibbled and made two last as long as possible, but it's ruined my calorie consumption for the day as I'd assumed a very small lunch and big family evening meal. Argh! Still, carbs will be under 50g and calories will be below TDEE so maybe as a starting point it's not too bad.

It does make me realise how hard this will be though - there are so many occasions which are going to involve food that I just can't avoid - or control what's on offer. So the 8 weeks at 800 calories may not be possible - but maybe if I can do as I did today, it'll just be a slightly slower loss, but also good practice for maintenance.

Day one again here - having had a break from obsessing about food for a bit.
235.8lbs and booking in for some long awaited surgery soon, so the more weight I can get off before it happens, the better

Today has gone well, considering I haven't done the pre-diet shopping yet, calories total 991. Fitbit is charging ready to get back on my small step goal tomorrow :)

Ok, so I got the books and I've done a meal plan (for dinners, got DH and kids to cater for also: PITA!) for the rest of the week. Got stuff for lunches.

I'm going to try this, at least for November. I'm quite daunted by it all and am already fantasising about having the weekends off Blush

I'll be back to report and probably to borrow some willpower / stamina from you guys: you make it sound so easy!!

Down a lb on yesterday Grin
Breakfast is scrambled (in butter) egg with tomato, shallot and mushroom, with a fudge melt green tea (I'm off coffee for a few weeks too)
