Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced by Michael Mosely on BBC Horizon on August 2012:

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had Eating Disorders you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

ACRONYMS

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE if higher) or 1000 cals for BF
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated (see calculators below) from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START
==========

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips

  • WATER: Start each day with a glass of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Most prefer either to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper, or have 2 meals.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • To speed up weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight, but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.
  • Do NOT fast: if you've ever had EDs, or if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting
===================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was FAT, not muscle or water, - in most diets, 25% of lost weight is muscle, up to 50% for sleb crash diets.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials (consecutive FDs) with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Applications: J CellMetabolism
Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease

His recent article in J Aging Mech Disease 2015 explains the health benefits of intermittent fasting in great scientific detail.

Also this interview with a leading researcher into fasting in combination with standard cancer treatment: ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLongo and a LongoInterview

Research by other US and European scientists in this DailyTelegraph Article about the medicinal uses of fasting, for many serious conditions & diseases.

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

staggers in, coughs on everybody, staggers out

all fasting and exercise has gone down the pan with this nasty cough
but I have been sticking to 16:8
and was designated driver for dinner last night

feel flabby but next week back at yoga will sort that

have a FAB New Years Eve folks.

LottieYoYo · 31/12/2015 15:33

Well yesterday's mini fast ended up not, but was within tdee thanks to 16.8 and soup lunch :)

Off to friends for new year tonight but have to be honest I'd rather be curled up on the sofa with some good tv, can't wait for things to just back to the norm haha

Happy Year to everyone and thank you this board has kept me going and got me to where I am today without you I would have jacked it in a long time ago xxx

LetMeDriveTheBus · 31/12/2015 20:10

Happy New Year everyone!

This time last year I was 3 stone heavier, flabby and very unfit. I welcome in 2016 feeling better than I have in my life.

Thank you for the support on this thread Thanks.

OohMrDarcy · 31/12/2015 21:02

Evening all

TiP - sounds like you have the same bug I've had.... been in self imposed isolation with the kids since day after boxing day, and basically leaving trails of tissues in my wake - couldn't eat properly as couldn't breath through my nose, or taste anything!

Still looking on track for maintaining this festive period - which I'm very chuffed with. Haven't felt like drinking really tbh, only had about 3 glasses of wine - though am about to open a bottle of prosseco to have with my chinese on my lonesome ... but we'll see how much I actually want it once I've started shall we!

No resolutions here, I made the decision last year to sod all that stuff, if I want to make a change - I make it straight away, hence my whimsical start to 5:2 back in september! I'm looking forward to getting back to a proper fast at some point in the next few days, have done a few minis but no full ones. And can't wait for some sun this summer (off to Gibraltar in August), would be nice to be able to go with a much lower BMI... I started in Sept, with a BMI of 42.4 and its down to 36.3 already. I've got the moonwalk booked too in May - so lots of fun ahead....

Happy new year to you all, I wish you all a happy and healthy year ahead - with enough smiles to get you through the crap too x

Breadandwine · 31/12/2015 21:55

Hi guys

17:7 for me today - but did that justify me making such a huge dent in my hoard of chocolate and sweets? Will make further inroads tonight - and then cease at midnight. Strict rations will be the order of the day from then on.

Oh, and I'm just tidying up the last of the alcohol - just one bottle of real ale and a couple of inches of Chateauneuf du Pape before and with dinner. Later I'll finish the last of a bottle of port, then, again, it'll be strictly rationed next year (only 2 hours away, as I type).

BC, I saw your post re your dinner with your friends - and I'm dead jealous! What a wonderful gathering that sounded, wish I could have been there!

Now I'm off to turn my Nairn's choc chip biscuits into full on chocolate biscuits! Grin

Have a Happy New Year, everyone! Xmas Grin

Ta1kinPeese · 31/12/2015 22:16

But here's the fun thing of 5:2
I've done bugger all for days, have a fridge full of cheese
but have stuck to 16:8 because I know it will make me feel better long term
.... scary permanent lifestyle change or what ....

On the theme of NY resolutions, here are some positive results from a month's abstinence from booze:

www.salon.com/2015/12/31/why_observing_dry_january_might_help_you_cut_back_on_drinking_down_the_line_partner/

Tomorrow's D Express (I think it is) has a story about the benefits of not drinking on 2 days a week. Also that men's weekly allowance should come down to that of women - 14 units.

And we're now 2 hours into Veganuary:

www.veganuary.com/register-1/

Finally, over the last couple of hours, I've just realised I'm coming down with a cold! Sad

Never mind, I'm so glad not to have had it over the Festive season. Now I can just stay in bed for the next few days and chill! Don't have to go anywhere or do anything! Grin

Happy days - not even going to do any press ups! Smile

diggerdigsdogs · 01/01/2016 03:16

Hi all can I join please?

I think 5:2 sounds perfect for DH and I. I like rules but I don't like feeling restricted over a long period.

I'm trying to stay off mn and fb so my plan isn't to pop in too often but I like to have a group to keep contact with.

Happy new year!

FD for me today! Came down t see celebrations on the table...I've hidden them!
New year, new FD! I have scales now so I'm going t monitor everything.

I'm 5'1 and 10 stone on the nose. Had a baby in April but I know its not baby weight anymore!

Welcome all the newbies!x

LottieYoYo · 01/01/2016 11:06

Hope everyone had a good evening however you spent it, we had a gathering at friends house which was nice but I really am goof off the booze.

I'm gonna do dry January I think which I should have no problem doing as I don't drink at home anyway and not much when I go out, it's more for the case of if I do go out I can use dry January as my excuse not to drink! I do have some friends that just won't let up when they see you not drinking drives me mad.

Looking forward now to FD come Monday bring it on I poor tummy needs a spring clean with all the rubbish food over Xmas haha

annielostit · 01/01/2016 13:09

Afternoon all. Hope nye went well & best wishes to you all.x
No FD till Monday here but thinking dry few weeks might be on the cards. I've not drunk every night but more than my usual 2 days a week.
Not sure how much I weigh as my insides are on stop (tmi) but I'm seeing a gastroentologist next week to find the cause.Confused

Breadandwine · 01/01/2016 14:51

Yup, definitely got a cold because:
My nose is running
I've got a cough
My throat is sore (so I try not to cough so often)
My voice is husky
I haven’t got up yet - still in bed
I have no energy
I haven't eaten yet - no desire for food
I’m feeling sorry for myself
SadSadSadSadSadSadSad

But:
I have no responsibilities
This, too, will pass
I feel so lucky that my cold waited until after the Festive season to strike
I’m optimistic that, because it came on so quickly, it'll disappear at the same speed
Grin

In the meantime, I get all the hot drinks I require, get to lie in bed all day, guilt-free, and sleep and surf to my heart’s content!

What’s not to like! Xmas Grin Xmas Grin Xmas Grin Xmas Grin Xmas Grin Xmas Grin Xmas Grin

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!
Had a lovely couple of days away involving lots of beach walking and some seaside(compulsory) chips a few glasses of champers and a fair bit of brie and stilton. Luckily I'm not a sweet fan really. I am going to have a dry January and have managed to talk my DH into it too which is quite something as he doesn't like having restrictions imposed. Will weigh tomorrow but will probably do a FD on Monday as usual even though I've only done one this week. Off to put the kettle on.

becs1973 · 01/01/2016 17:36

Ok, here we go again (again)! Joining the main thread for the support, hi everyone!! FD will be Monday and Thursday....currently 85kg and 5ft4 Shock

lovemyway · 01/01/2016 17:40

Get well soon cold sufferers. I had it on Boxing day, a chesty cough and sneezy. Only lasts a few days and was greatly helped by a super garlicky and chilli spiked turkey curry.

Happy new year!
Sooo I'm back after a particularly terrible year which undid my 3.5 stone loss somewhat! Think I need to lose 1-1.5 stone just need the motivation to follow through, in theory it shouldn't be hard as I find fast days easy but the nfds are another matter. Thinking about purchasing a Fitbit to help motivate can anyone recommend which is the best one as I'm confused! 😀

mrswhiskers · 02/01/2016 08:01

twinmama I did a lot of reading up before buying a Fitbit and ended up with the Fitbit 'one' which is the one that clips on. I find it very accurate and nobody needs to know you're wearing it. from what I've read the ones you wear on your wrist don't always register your steps if you're pushing a buggy/shopping trolley etc as they rely on your arms swinging to count the steps.

cheeseandbanana · 02/01/2016 08:20

Hi can I join too please?

I've got a shed load of weight to lose, bmi currently 43.5 so absolutely needs to come down. I've tried the 5:2 before and got results just need some friendly faces to help me cope.

WineOrSleep · 02/01/2016 08:37

Hello! Please can I join too, been lurking with interest....

I have a question though. Breakfast on FD.. What is a good suggestion that will stop me from fainting before midday / won't use up too many of the precious calories to save them for dinner?

Many thanks and ooooh, think today will be my very first ever FD Shock

Twinmama32 · 02/01/2016 09:10

Thanks mrswhiskers I'll look into it :)

Right first FD for 2016 lets do it!
