Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced on BBC Horizon on August 2012:

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means somewhere around the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had EDs you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

ACRONYMS & CALCULATORS:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

BMI ( Body Mass Index ) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men) or 1000 cals for BF
If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful website or app to track food & drink caloriesi

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated (see calculators below) from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START
==========

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Most prefer either to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper, or have 2 meals.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • To speed up weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight, but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.
  • Do NOT fast: if you've ever had EDs, or if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting
====================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was fat, not muscle, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease
Also this ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLongo and a LongoInterview

Research by other US and European scientists in this DailyTelegraph Article about the medicinal uses of fasting, for many serious conditions & diseases.

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

Hi all, successful(ish) fast today, came in a bit over at 539 but I did a 40 minute swim this evening which has madee feel very calm and zen. Feeling good today. Am still going to add in a third fast day this week on Saturday to get a bit of an extra weight loss kick and try to maximise the deficit following my fat day on Monday.....

Well done to everyone else who's fasted today Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 03/09/2015 22:08

Welcome back, Pot
You may have felt better on 5:2 because fasting often improves insulin metabolism and other metabolic issues.

You know how to lose, so you'll get rid of that stone.
While doing so, you should consider what maintenance plan would be sustainable for you, because we all find:

If you return to your old WOE, you'll return to your old weight

Umpteen possibilities: daily TDEE, possibly with 16:8 or 14:10, even 12:12
Or 1-2 FDs every 1-2 weeks. Or .... your choice.

Maintenance Tips for everyone:
. Weigh weekly.
. If you stay 4lb above goal for a full week, or if clothes feel tight, return to 5:2 immediately.
. Do you get bored with mfp and then just return to your old ways ? Train yourself about portion sizes and then just mfp new stuff
. No snacking
. Stay within nhs alcohol limits

Well done on your FDs, Tip, vegan

Kitty You can have it tomorrow
It tastes even better when you have waited for it
But sometimes, you no longer want it, because nothing is banned and you are not stressed

Morning, a good weigh in today.
1lb off, 1 inch off my hips (FINALLY!) and 1 inch off my waist, putting it back into the 20-somethinh inches. First time since uni 20+ years ago Grin. Next goal is to get back into the 60-something kilos.
So far on this WOE I have gone from:
12st 10lb to
11st 4.5lb in 5 months with 2 complete weeks off and a 'sod it' day each week.
Size 14-16 to size 12. Those Trousers Of Ambition are in regular use now. Wearing skinny jeans instead of bootcut, tight tops instead of tunics. I feel bloody fab!!

NFD and fasted gym this morning before a little celebration methinks...

LetMeDriveTheBus · 04/09/2015 07:18

How fantastic confused! Well done!

Lottielulu · 04/09/2015 08:24

Morning all well done confused I your losses :)

1lb off this week :) which puts me back at an official stone loss, I hit it in June but was sick at the time so my weight went back up and after holiday finally feels like I am settling back into it.

Off to try on some size 10 jeans from next (as they are always more generous in size) as I can now fit my arm into my old ones, could be just coz they are old lol.

NFD today Good Luck to any Friday Fasters

magicalrealistmum · 04/09/2015 09:06

Congrats on your SV, confused and your inches NSV.
Keep wearing those Trousers of Ambition - until they are too big for you
Wink

PrimalLass · 04/09/2015 09:31

That's great confused, Lottielulu and magic. Sorry if I've missed anyone - I shouldn't be here as I have a ridiculous work deadline Blush

Was supposed to be FD 3 of the week for me, but a friend just asked me round for wine coffee after schoool. So I'll attempt a Saturday FD tomorrow.

Back to 11.2 this morning, which is vastly better than my premenstrual 11.5 last week. It's so nice to commit to this again and feel back in control.

confusedandemployed · 04/09/2015 09:54

Thanks everyone. I am pretty chuffed.

More good news too...I can't tell anyone in RL but my best mate, who's unable to have children, has just discovered that her surrogate is pregnant with twins! Such a long journey she's had with her DP, including 2 MCs from surrogate, but I have a good feeling this time! Twins are biologically theirs too. A good day!

BigChocFrenzy · 04/09/2015 09:57

Well done on your SV, Primal After totm, many women lose a few lb of retained water. So now you have the real number.
Plan everything today, so you nail that Saturday FD.

MrsCoyote · 04/09/2015 10:01

Well done, Lottie and confused!

FD for me too.

Wednesday was a good FD for me but then at 9 pm DH ordered a pizza (for himself) and I inhaled two slices (no better word for it, it was quick and no thinking involved). I felt very cross afterwards :-( Why??

MrsCoyote · 04/09/2015 10:04

magical, well done too.

sirphlebas · 04/09/2015 10:50

Hello!

I'm a newbie to the thread; I have done 5:2 in the past & but started eating too much again so here I am. I plucked up the courage to weigh myself this morning after a summer of excess. I have 15kg to lose and would like to get as much of that off as possible before January next year when I have my next big birthday.

CW: 75kg
GW: 60kg

Vital statistics: 45-34-42
Dress size: 16
Bra size: 34FF

My TDEE is 1650 (for sedentary) and I'm making sure I get 10,000+ steps a day minimum.

Fasting today.

Breadandwine · 04/09/2015 11:28

Great successes to celebrate on here this morning, and some lovely none-WOL related stories as well! Keep 'em coming! Smile

I'm fasting today - started early at the cricket yesterday [don'tmentionthecricket!] finishing the last piece of my vegan Thai curry come chilli non carne pie at just after 4pm.

Probably won't eat until dinner at 6, when I've got the other half of the pie.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/09/2015 11:49

Welcome, sirphlebas
Smile
You should be able to lose most / all of that 15kg over the next few months.
Planning FDs in advance, sensible eating on most NFDs and patience are the keys.

What about the cricket, B&W ?
Hmm Wink Many of us don't know the score (or even who's playing Blush )

Hi everyone.

I am hungover Sad - drank too much wine and limoncellos Shock at my sales meeting dinner last night in London. Am so pleased I was sat at the end of the table with similarly naughty colleagues rather than the other end with the MD and my boss!!!

HOWEVER - I forced myself to do a mini triathlon this morning - 400m swim, 12km cycle and 5km run. Apart from the cycle which is 25km, those are the actual distances of my tri in 2 weeks time so I am chuffed to have had a practice putting it all together. And I won't be hungover on the day either! Hope I can walk tomorrow...

Am wearing jeans that were previously "skinny" - they are baggy!! Love it.

Think I have convinced a friend to do 5:2....

Iamblossom · 04/09/2015 11:54

that's wonderful news about your friend confused. Fingers crossed for her and her DP.

confusedandemployed · 04/09/2015 12:06

Well done lamb, exercise after overindulgence takes a particular type of willpower! And thanks for the good wishes. I can't imagine how hard the past 15 years have been for them so I'm keeping everything crossed that this is their time.

Iamblossom · 04/09/2015 12:09

I was punishing myself confused. Grin

Hellokitty105 · 04/09/2015 12:25

I often find the exercise itself after over indulgence easier like all the extra calories gives me a power surge! It's usually the will power to go do it that's the problem!

I'm having a day off from the gym today, I woke up and realised that I'd been at least once everyday for nearly two weeks!! Defo deserve a rest day, although I missed it! Is it sad that I find exercise addictive!

Iamblossom · 04/09/2015 12:30

better than being addicted to something else hello
