Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced on BBC Horizon on August 2012:

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means somewhere around the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had EDs you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

ACRONYMS & CALCULATORS:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

BMI ( Body Mass Index ) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men) or 1000 cals for BF
If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful website or app to track food & drink caloriesi

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated (see calculators below) from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START
==========

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Most prefer either to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper, or have 2 meals.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • To speed up weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight, but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.
  • Do NOT fast: if you've ever had EDs, or if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting
====================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was fat, not muscle, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease
Also this ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLongo and a LongoInterview

Research by other US and European scientists in this DailyTelegraph Article about the medicinal uses of fasting, for many serious conditions & diseases.

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

Cooking
TBH that is the most surreal reason I've ever heard. It almost deserves Cava for the finality of it now.
And well done him on having the next job lined up.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/09/2015 18:40

Cooking Wow Shock I hope your DH gets very generous hush money redundancy, to help fund the self-employment.

If not, he could give the facts to his union rep (if any) or ACAS.
Would he have a case wrt compensation for unfair dismisssal < is there a lawyer / HR bod on the thread > ?

Puffle Re 32" waist - is that measuring the narrowest pt, usually 2-3" above the navel ?
If so, it would be high for your BMI 21, suggesting hormonal issues like pre-meno, which also changes insulin metabolism.

I suggest your aim should be a better body composition, which is where intermittent fasting like 5:2 really helps.
Monitor your waist and hips over the weeks, to chart progress.

Shock cooking!

And yes BC, cooking's DH would have a case for unfair dismissal if it can be shown the redundancy process wasn't followed properly (I'm an HR professional). But it sounds like you both just want to move on cooking? I can't say I blame you, especially if the redundancy package is OK.

Cookingongas · 02/09/2015 19:04

The redundancy is fine for us. We're happy out of it tbh. And have been planning for it for months. But again thank you for all non diet the support Star

Cookingongas · 02/09/2015 19:05

The non diet support *

LetMeDriveTheBus · 02/09/2015 20:22

I am so grateful for this thread. I've been really struggling today. Have stayed pretty much on track but it's been hard work. Been fighting all the urges to eat crap. Read through this thread and feel so much better. Thank you everyone.

Iamblossom · 02/09/2015 20:23

FD 2 nailed, 474. Had what I listed earlier plus a salted caramel options hot chocolate, OMIGOD, where have they been all my life?

MUST do some exercise....2.5 weeks to triathlon. Doesn't help that the kids are still off school and I have a day in London tomorrow including a dinner with colleagues. Will try not drink too much so that I can gym on Friday lunchtime.

Iamblossom · 02/09/2015 20:26

cooking I'm sorry to hear about your DH and his prick of a boss, and I am glad that you have some time to prepare. I hope he finds something better soon.

leftyloosy · 02/09/2015 20:38

Hope your Chinese was yummy cooking

I ordered a fat rascal today at Betty's and only ate half! Shock

fusspot66 · 02/09/2015 21:03

I'm planning my first fast of the week tomorrow and have been eating biscuits like it's going out of style - an end of holiday fling I think. I'd left my fast till Wednesday when the kids started back but last night was spent in A & E with Dd who somersaulted off her bed and landed on her neck. She's very lucky, just a stiff neck, but it was too close for comfort. No way could I consider fasting today on 4 hours sleep. I may only manage the one FD this week and maybe some 16:8s at the weekend . What I have learned, is that I feel fairly yucky on a diet of biscuits and toast. Either bloated or ravenous!
I'm going to bed very soon, & I've just turned down some Bombay Mix. Start as you mean to go on!

BigChocFrenzy · 02/09/2015 21:42

Well done on hanging tough, Bus You didn't give up and you should feel proud.

Well done on your FD, Blossom* and any other Wednesday fasters.

Eating "half a fat rascal" sounds very Hannibal Lectorish, Lefty < never eaten at Betty's > but I'm sure it's better than eating a whole guy.

Crikey, fusspot what a scary experience for you and dd.
Those sugary biscuits would have spiked your insulin and caused hunger, then sunk and spiked as you ate more ... a sugary cravings spiral.
The toast just added more carbs and made it worse.

All very understandable though.
Just nail the FD tomorrow and try to eat nutritiously within TDEE on all the NFDs. 16:8 would help this.

Hellokitty105 · 02/09/2015 22:24

Today was successful although I was drooling over some of the cakes while watch GBBO. I have to admit I was tempted to cave and have a kit Kat as a quick sugar fix but I thought 'am I really hungry or just being greedy?' So I managed to go without!

leftyloosy · 03/09/2015 08:46

Haha. A fat rascal is a Yorkshire delicacy. It's like a cross between a scone and a rock cake.

BigChocFrenzy · 03/09/2015 11:14

Well done on resisting a KitKat, Kitty
Thanks for the info, lefty that's interesting

confusedandemployed · 03/09/2015 13:49

Hope your DD is OK fusspot, and your FD going well. Mine's not too bad.

My planned tea, after Zumba, is 2 eggs, a small tin tuna, large salad and a Graze Veggie Protein Power box, plus milk for drinks the day is coming in at 544cal.

Just bought a pair of size 12 skinny jeans which I hope will fit. I carry my weight on my thighs and boobs so it'll be a major NSV if they do fit!!

Hope all Thursday fasters still on plan.

Cookingongas · 03/09/2015 17:57

Hope your dd is okay fuss - and you - it must've been awful for you.

I'm suffering for the Chinese. I've been Ill all day Sad :

Let this be a lesson to allWink

I'm supposed to be fasting, but it's carbs and sugared tea only while I'm so ill, as I'm prone to fainting and the only way I've found to stop that when I'm ill is to exist on sugar. I'll still be well under tdee though.

fusspot66 · 03/09/2015 19:28

Thanks for the concern re DD. She's ok. A bit sore and stiff. My cricked neck from last week managed to pinch a nerve overnight and I woke up in agony so no FD today at all. Psychosomatic or caused by a long night on a hospital chair? DH insisted I do the neck stretches his chiropractor gave him and it eased enough to get me to work.
My blood does run cold at the thought of the 'What ifs......."
A school Mum noticed I'd lost weight so I must knuckle down and get on with it. I don't want to find myself back in the obese range of BMI.

confusedandemployed · 03/09/2015 19:31

FD going rather well. Just tucking into tuna salad, but Zumba was cancelled, BOO - so an impromptu day off the exercise. I'll make up for it tomorrow.

Nearly at the finish line, Thursday fasters.

Lottielulu · 03/09/2015 19:56

NFD yesterday was under tdee though not quality food (birthday cake) but at least I kept it under.

FD today I've come in at 650 harder than Tuesday's which was a breeze, but my student son gave me the hump with his comments on my cleaning techniques (coz his so perfect NOT!) so I went for a square of dark chocolate, don't think licking it would have been enough lol I just want bed now

Pufflemum · 03/09/2015 20:12

Thursday fast for me, slightly over as I had a wAitrose ready meal which was 587, but I have done two dog walks.

BC thanks for your comments, my waist measurement is probably a bit high as I was using a decorating metal tape measure!! I buy 28 inch jeans but they are feeling tight. I'm determined to stick with the diet despite the lack of loss, I'll try to introduce more weight training to my exercise plan.
Hope everyone else has had a successful day.

BigChocFrenzy · 03/09/2015 20:21

Sorry to hear that Chinese takeaway upset your tum, Cooking
Never fast with an upset tum.
In fact, don't fast for a full week after symptoms have ceased, because your tum will still be sorting itself out and fasting can sometimes restart D&V.

My excellent GP recommends for an upset tum:
. Only dry white toast or bread to eat, no seeds or spread.
. Only water to drink, or herbal tea. No milk or tea
I.e. bread & water.
It works for me < remembers one & only visit to a sushi bar >
But obv do whatever works for you.

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 03/09/2015 20:25

It's encouraging that you've had compliments, fusspot
Now your dd is safe, you can climb back onto the fasting saddle and carry on towards goal.

Well done on your FD, lottie, confused, puffle and all the Thursday fasters.
If supper is over, clean your teeth right away; the fresh taste helps avoid the temptation to nibble

OP posts:
Hellokitty105 · 03/09/2015 20:57

I've brushed my teeth and sat waiting to watch this Jamie Oliver program on sugar but I'm sat imagining eating a digestive biscuit with peanut butter! I'm not hungry it's just greed/craving. Why does your brain crave foods when your body's satisfied?

potbellyroast · 03/09/2015 21:26

Well I'm back. After losing 2 stone doing this WOE I fell into my usual trap of getting compliments, feeling better about myself, buying some new clothes and then thinking I can start to cheat. Happens every time I lose any weight. I'm not sure why I sabotage myself? But I know I failed when I stopped mfping and reading these threads. So I'm now going to commit to keeping up. I wasn't a regular poster but I did always read everyone's posts.

Anyway I've put a stone back on. That being said when I did WW and SW I would put it all back on plus some more, so I'm glad that hasn't happened this time.

I'm hypothyroid and I know this WOE makes me feel much better in myself - less lethargic, plus I sleep much better. That maybe due to limiting sugary snacks and drinks though?

TalkinPeace · 03/09/2015 21:34

Successfully fasted today : two boiled eggs for lunch, copious mugs of tea and then a small bean and tinned sardine salad for supper
which was yummy.
No idea how many calories, but just enough and not too many.

Hang on in there folks : maintaining is worth the continuing effort
