Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced on BBC Horizon on August 2012:

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means somewhere around the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had EDs you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

ACRONYMS & CALCULATORS:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

BMI ( Body Mass Index ) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men) or 1000 cals for BF
If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful website or app to track food & drink caloriesi

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated (see calculators below) from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START
==========

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Most prefer either to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper, or have 2 meals.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • To speed up weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight, but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.
  • Do NOT fast: if you've ever had EDs, or if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting
====================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was fat, not muscle, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease
Also this ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLongo and a LongoInterview

Research by other US and European scientists in this DailyTelegraph Article about the medicinal uses of fasting, for many serious conditions & diseases.

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

Well done on everyone's successes

Was doing well on yesterday's NFD till the old man ordered pizza later in the evening (this was after dinner!) anyone else's partners do this? Anyway ended up stealing some slices so went over tdee.

Another NFD today but gonna make up for last night by skipping breakfast, it helps that it feels like the pizza is still being digested :/

Have a great weekend everyone

I keep having to save this thread to my watch list as it keeps disappearing. This began long before the hackers. Too many times to be my fat fingers doing it. Anyone else having this?

Hellokitty105 · 29/08/2015 11:07

As well as sugar free, I've gone back to basics and pulled out the weighing scales. It's surprising how you can lose sight of portion control and I'm even talking with healthy food. I love watermelon by the bowlful and I've noticed my portion size has increased. Even though it's healthy, it's extra calories but all in moderation eh.

Strokethefurrywall · 29/08/2015 13:09

Is anyone doing alternate day fasting and noticed a massive inability to drink alcohol in the smallest amounts?
I'm probably at goal weight now but have been following IF more for health benefits. Obviously during fast days I don't consume any alcohol but was happy to have a few drinks on a weekend NFD.
In the last month my tolerance to booze has reduced to practically zero. I no longer enjoy even one glass of red so have stopped drinking it. Last night I had 2 bottles of Heineken. Woken up feeling like I've been drinking beergheritas!!

Anyone else noticed this? I'm not saying it bothers me as such but probably going to have to take the decision to not bother having a drink at all. Not a big deal in itself but I enjoyed enjoying wine. Now I'm Sad...

BigChocFrenzy · 29/08/2015 16:33

Stroke A few people have mentioned this, all types of IF.
I suspect 2 causes:

  1. You body weight is now less and probably your total weekly calorie intake too. Hence the alcohol is less buffered than it was.

  2. The body normally prioritises processing alcohol above processing anything else, because alcohol by-products like formaldehyde (embalming fluid !) are basically toxic.
If IF has switched the body more to fat-burning, or otherwise altered the processing balance, there may be a slight delay before your body switches to dealing with alcohol.

Advantages:
. Your livet is happier
. You have eliminated a non-essential source of calories, so more scope to eat.

Hi hi hi!

Back from the most wonderful two weeks in Kefalonia. What a stunning place, sea was like a blue swimming pool, weather was spectacular. We had the best holiday ever.....

.....and back to reality.

Was well over TDEE every day, drank alcohol every night, and did little exercise. I fully expect to have gained at least 5-6 pounds, but as I was 7 pounds below my previous goal weight when I left I am not too concerned. Weigh in tomorrow morning to assess the damage. Thoroughly enjoyed every glass of wine and gob full of crisps. Grin

Dh is the heaviest he has been in years though, and is now on a mission. He has said he going to do 5:2 with me starting Monday so we will see what happens. Last night of debauchery this evening as we share a bottle of red and a Chinese. We were still in Greece this morning so technically it's still a holiday day. Smile

Congrats on the threads pregnancy Maz!!

And well done on all SVs and non SVs.

Bigchoc did I read that you were a vegan? Or is that someone else?

I say I did little exercise, but having stated I can't do pressups, I did 15 every day and they did get easier. Shall try and keep that up.....

Looking forward to fasting on Monday and some clean living.

Just checking in to report a successful NFD. I was faced with temptation of crispy Kreme at work but I didn't succumb to temptation.. Proud! I thought off all the sugar and crap in them and managed to fight the urge! Another spin session tomorrow morning to start the day!

BigChocFrenzy · 29/08/2015 20:37

Well done on resisting Krispy Kremes, Kitty and managing a good NFD.
I love good choc donuts, no filling, from the bakery as an occasional treat, but I found KK revolting the one time I tried - aftertaste like a chem lab.
Shows we all have different taste buds.

OP posts:
MazzleDazzle · 29/08/2015 22:00

Mmmm. I used to love a caramel covered, creme filled donut. Haven't had one in years. Don't think I could handle the sugar rush nowadays!

Blossom your holiday sounds fab!

Shopping today was in aid of new clothes for a night away with friends tomorrow: posh nosh, cocktails (mocktails for me!) and a concert.

Kids picked their winter clothes. Imagine needing winter clothes in bloody August! It's really nippy up here.

Haven't had morning sickness at all, but I'm constantly nauseous. Went out for lunch today and barely touched my food as I battled to stop retching!

Made a delicious soup yesterday, which I managed to enjoy! Coconut, sweet potato and red pepper. It was delicious and nutritious. Grin

TerrorAustralis · 30/08/2015 06:06

Just catching up on the thread - between hacking, working and sickness I've missed a lot!

Congratulations Mazzle! Isn't constant nausea during pregnancy morning sickness? I had constant nausea for about the first 4 months with my DS. Not a great time, but it did stop me from putting on too much pregnancy weight!

I haven't done an FD or workout for nearly two weeks because of being ill. Initially my weight went right down, but after returning to normal eating, it's now gone right back up Sad. I'm almost back to full health now, so I will attempt an FD tomorrow. On Tuesday I'm off to Thailand for a short break with my BFF, so I don't think I will manage second one this week.

Good luck to any weekend fasters!

Hellokitty105 · 30/08/2015 08:26

big choc I don't even really like Krispy Kreme it was just the peer pressure and sweetness (they just look good) that makes them hard to resist but in the end you know they arnt worth it.

Pufflemum · 30/08/2015 09:43

Hi everyone, i too have just returned from a holiday and like Iamblossom i ate and drunk way over TEE each day. I refuse to get of the scales to see the damage but am looking forward to fasting on Tuesday and Thursday this week. I will attempt 16:8 on the other days to get used to the hungry feeling again!

I can't believe the suggestion of a spoonful of Marmite! That would definately kill any cravings I had. I've bought some to give it a go.

Meerka · 30/08/2015 11:00

mazzle about the nausea - nothing really takes it away but try making sure your stomach is never actually empty. Also, never actually too full.

Eat what you fancy. Sounds like heaven, but I do actually mean it; the stuff you actually -feel- like eating often seems to make you less sick.

Sipping very hot or very cold drinks can make it easier to drink, or sucking/chewing ice chips. Some people find flat coke works too, strangely.

If the nausea gets too much, ask your doc for one of the front line old style anti-histamines. They are considered completely safe (despite the fears hanging on in many people; pyridioxine is FDA category A, the safest category) and do help many people. Take 2-3 days to build up in the system.

BigChocFrenzy · 30/08/2015 11:34

Puffle A teasp of Marmite (10 cals from the jar, no toast) on FDs replenishes the minerals and B vits that may be lost due to drinking more water and nit eating much.
So, it can avoid headaches and weakness, as well as satisfying the desire for a savoury taste.

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 30/08/2015 11:44

Terror With illness, especially if you had an upset stomach, you probably lost a lot of water and went below the normal healthy water % for your body. So, with recovery, the water returns.

I advise NOT having an FD yet, especially if you are going on holiday v soon: even though you may feel fine now, your stomach may take another week or more to rebalance and recuperate. Several folk have found that an FD too soon after a stomach upset or other illness can restart symptoms.
You need to have normal health to fast, or it is too stressful for the body.

Try to eat healthily within TDEE every day until your hols and make sure your tum is 100% again, so no junk or alcohol. At most, you could try a mini-FD (1000 cals) but an FD is v risky before hols

Hello! New to the diet and thought I'd share my first 6 days experience. I'm breastfeeding a 9 month old so have upped my calories slightly- my tdee is c. 1800. I've eaten 700 kcal on fast days and between 1800 and 2000 on nfds.
Felt pretty dizzy on first fd and subsequent nfd but I've been ok since. I've been amazed at how quickly my stomach seems to have shrunk - yesterday I left some lunch because I felt full which I wouldn't have done previously. I also have been really motivate to track everything I've eaten on nfds. So far so good!
Although I'm going to start weaning off the Breast shortly and am a bit apprehensive about reducing my calories to compensate!
Had a sneaky peak on the scales this morning and have lost 3.5lbs which is great!

PrimalLass · 30/08/2015 12:05

FD should be alcohol-free to gain the full benefits of fasting.

Oh, of course. But hard on a Friday night Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 30/08/2015 12:49

Welcome Sophie Congrats on your SV and your good start
Smile
No hurry, you could stay around 700 cals for as long as you like, while your body gets used to stopping BFing. Whatever makes this WOE sustainable for you.
700 cals is still a good deficit to lose weight, if you don't average over TDEE on NFDs.

OP posts:
AntiqueRose · 30/08/2015 13:41

I've done my weigh in a day early as I can't get to the gym tomorrow. I've been 10st 7lbs for two weeks - definitely an off figure last week because of TOTM. Hopped on the scales this morning and I'm 10st 3lbs!! Completely shocked but just proves if you have a blip on the scales you just need to keep on sticking to TDEE and fasting and it will sort itself out in the end. I had a target of 10st 5lb for September so I'm really pleased to have achieved that and then a little extra Grin Hope you enjoy your trip to Thailand terror! And welcome Sophie!

LetMeDriveTheBus · 30/08/2015 14:20

Well done for sticking at it Antique.

So jealous Iam Envy. Holiday looks and sounds amazing!

I had a stupid slip up yesterday and the unexpected gift of a fresh out of the oven apple crumble, spiralled into me eating all the food I possibly could.

Back on the wagon today but annoyed with myself.

Dumpyandabdabs · 30/08/2015 14:23

I'm back, I've been decidedly intermittent at the intermittent fasting recently so need to get back into it! Had two weeks away in Shropshire and ate way too many treats. Luckily I've not put on much weight, around 3lbs, but I definitely feel a little more flabby about the mid section which is never a good thing. Decided to ease my way back into Fast Days by only eating once a day (800 -1000 cals) for a few days before I take the plunge back into a 500 cal FD.

Nice to see both the regulars and lots of new people posting, this thread is always such a good motivation.
