Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced on BBC Horizon on August 2012:
Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means somewhere around the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

For most folk, 5:2 results in a weekly 3,000 calorie deficit, so averages 1 lb loss. However, some folk may lose much more quickly / slowly, or in fits & starts.
Initial weight loss may be much quicker, especially if you have a lot of weight to lose.

When you are within a healthy BMI range and just want to trim a few more lb, progress may be much slower and you may need to monitor carefully that you don't average above TDEE on non-fast days.

Acronyms & Calculators:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight normally needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

BMI ( Body Mass Index ) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9
FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men) or 1000 cals for BF
If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful website or app to track food & drink caloriesi

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day. TDEE is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this over the week's NFDs.

To speed up your weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight,
but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that to maintain our new healthy weight longterm requires a permanent change in how we eat.

How to Start

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator above as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Many prefer to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar and junk food. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have past or present EDs, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting
==================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was fat, not muscle, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease
Also this ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLongo and a LongoInterview

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

Thanks for all the suggestions folks, yeah I think bigchoc and dotty I will probably not eat until the meal, I will be in the hairdressers around lunch time anyway, so I'll stock up on their nice tea! It was the wine on an empty stomach that was making me think should I eat earlier in the day but I'll have water with the first two courses and might have a glass of wine with desert, that might be sensible...Smile

calfon glad your seeing the 30DS working for you, I really like it too, it definitley makes a difference, do post in the other thread, it's great for keeping a note of your own progress too

Moo I can't blame you having your muffins, I'd be the same Blush hope the rest of the evening went ok for you

peach well done on getting down near to your goal, that's excellent

Well FD done here, had a lovely pepper, mushroom & green lentil omelette with a side salad for dinner and desert was some strawberries & blueberries with a natural yogurt, so around 513 cals, was stuffed after all that, then did a nice slow 3 mile run, have the teeth cleaned and am now ready for bed Smile mrswhiskers I'll be dreaming of chocolate tart now [Homerstyledrool]
I must get Marmite, I've never tasted it but everyone seems to like it??

eachpeachbarebum · 30/04/2015 22:41

granny hold your soil's complement in your mind when things are tough, that's a brilliant nsv.
confused hope you enjoyed your dinner. I might have to try Dahl soup, and another omelette from mrsspm... I'm going to have to try one. Baking sounds yummy too. Not sure I could do that on a fd. you must have iron will power!
stripy that's really interesting about your toe joint and must be a massive positive side effect for you. my knees are usually achy and painful. since I started 5:2 I've not been woken up by it or needed to use painkillers. I don't think it can be weight related with me either. I'm convinced the healthy woe and specifically cutting out sugar for me has made the difference. I hope it continues for you. The unexpected benefits are the best.

eachpeachbarebum · 30/04/2015 22:54

soil's?! I am sure the soil and the plants would compliment you if they could Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 01/05/2015 00:12

Fd done. Swapped bank holiday for tomorrow as weather looks good, we're planning a good walk and then some sort of meal out before picking up dd who is going to the cinema after school. Won't be a posh meal as will be in walking trousers. And I had to persuade DH that we probably shouldn't also have a pub lunch. Grin

MrsHarryRamsden · 01/05/2015 00:34

Another 2lbs off for me this week, making my loss 1st 10lbs in 10 weeks.

But my best news reaching a BMI of 29.9, obviously still quite overweight, but no longer obese.

Well done to everyone on their SV & NSVs and hope you all enjoy the bank holiday x

Ps this WOE is anti-inflammatory so maybe helps calm down aching or swollen joints and muscles as well as soothe the digestive system?

Breadandwine · 01/05/2015 00:47

I'm another fan of Marmite, which is a yeast extract - as a vegan it helps me to keep up my B12.

However, I rarely buy it since I find the own-brand versions are quite a bit cheaper - and just as good! Smile

confusedandemployed · 01/05/2015 06:21

Breadandwine I always buy the own brand too. It's exactly the same stuff for half the price. I cannot understand why anyone would buy the branded stuff regular lurker on the frugal thread that I am
Weighed this morning after 2 FDs and 1.25lb down. I was genuinely expecting to STS today so I'm very pleased. Sat with a lovely coffee with milk now, planning a very light breakfast before a busy day: hairdresser's, gym, make tea (spag bol), into town to find DD a dress for our ever-so-casual wedding which is in a fortnight.
Yay it's Friday! Grin

confusedandemployed · 01/05/2015 06:31

MrsHarryRamsden congrats! I have a way to go before I get below 30.0 but your success gives me hope!

DrinkGirlsFeck · 01/05/2015 07:01

Marmite is the work of the devil. Wink
I would actually have to scrub my tongue if I ate a spoonful.

Brilliant news MrsHarry! Congrats! I'm targeting a healthy BMI as my goal weight.

NSV here yesterday. I got into a dress that was just a bit too snug before and DH was very complimentary. Grin

mootime · 01/05/2015 07:39

Mrs H- great SV and congrats on going down a band on the BMI I.

Good luck any friday fasters.

Yesterday ended better than the cupcake blip. I had a lovely homemade tagine with couscous for supper and my cals came in at about 1200 so not quite a mini fast, but not bad.

We are off for the weekend away, and a posh meal this eve so am going to try and skip breakfast and lunch. So looking forward to this break, it will make this week of 2 FD and 2 mini FDs feel worth while.

big choc, I'm generally v good about sweet stuff, it was just that DD was desperate to do some baking, and at the end of a few very strict days I caved. No icing though!!

mrswhiskers · 01/05/2015 07:46

Another pound down for me this week.
well done on your losses mrsharry Smile

I'm another one with extra health benefits. I used to have to use a lot of emollients for dermatitis and I can't remember the last time I needed them now. I've stopped itching Grin Not sure if it's the fasting or the change in diet but I'm happy.

MABS · 01/05/2015 09:06

what a brilliant thread! just read it all from the beginning :) thanks for all the comments and advice all.. I am definitely going to start this on Tuesday so will be back then it that's ok? away this long w/e so just know it would be pointless starting now.

MrsStevenPatrickMorrissey · 01/05/2015 09:09

Morning all, well done everyone on all your SV & NSVs, everyone is doing great Flowers

I weighed in this morning and am 3lbs down (whoop whoop) which brings me down to 10st 5, which is overall a loss of 1 stone & 9lbs since the start of February (although I did have a 3 week break in April) Smile so im a happy bunny!

It's really to good to know that there are extra benefits to 5:2 as well, I have thought my sinuses are definitely a lot clearer since I started this WOL, last year I was constantly going to the dr for antibiotics and I haven't had any this year yet (touch wood)

Thanks for the tip on the Marmite B&W & confused I'll buy the cheaper version in case I end up thinking the same as Drinkfeckgirls Grin

Have a good FD friday fasters Wink

BigChocFrenzy · 01/05/2015 09:23

Congrats on your SV, MrsHarry That's a major milestone, under BMI 30 and into a whole new BMI band !
Flowers
Confused We're all rooting for you to reach that milestone too. You are progressing steadily, so you'll get there and be so chuffed.

Good dress NSV, DrinkGirls But you're a Marmite refuser Shock < clutches pearls & shuts eyes > Wink
Well done on yet another lb down, MrsWhiskers You mentioned on the maintainers thread that this is your teenage weight now !
Some 5:2ers find on reaching their original goal that they can then achieve further goals that they had never imagined. Also, it's a useful buffer for holidays and big social events.

MrsWhiskers I remember from a scientific paper on IF health benefits that helping skin ailments was one of them
Stripy, peach Joint pain is often caused by inflammation, which may be helped by fasting and / or cutting down added sugar.

Enjoy your special meal out, MrsSteve Hairdresser instead of lunch is a great swap, very enjoyable pampering

CarrotPuff · 01/05/2015 10:48

Dotty my goal weight is my happy weight that I used to be. Last time I've been at it was 5 years ago before I moved to the UK.

I don't think I can promise myself a reward for reaching it though. It will take me at least 3 months to get there I think, and we're also TTC for miniCarrot #2. The latter is more important to me than to lose weight, so I'll obviously stop as soon as I get my bfp. It's been already 10 months and a mc in the middle since we started, so I really hope this month is the month, and it doesn't take another 3...

Thanks BigChoc, NFDs have lately gone down the pot on sugar front, I need to rein those in. Somehow Hmm

Speaking of joints, I had a clicky knee, it wasn't painful or anything, just annoying, but it has stopped some time ago. Never realised it's down to 5:2 but must be Smile

I had a mini NSV yesterday - I could fit into my size 8 trousers. I think these are slightly bigger than anything else size 8, but I was quite pleased. I couldn't put them on for ages before.

Another FD today, having my herbal tea now. The sun is shining so hopefully will get out shortly.

stripytees · 01/05/2015 10:58

Congrats on the new BMI range MrsHarry!

And congrats on your clothes NSV Carrot! I had a clothes NSV this morning too - I'm wearing a Boden size 10 skirt that was too tight when I bought it a year and a bit ago, then even tighter later Blush but today fits just perfectly! Very happy. Grin

Well done to everyone else on your SVs and NSVs too - I too use a tablet or phone to post and can't remember names when commenting.

BigChocFrenzy · 01/05/2015 11:32

Congrats on your clothes NSVs, Carrot,Stripy and good luck with your ttc, carrot

OP posts:
confusedandemployed · 01/05/2015 11:59

Thanks for the encouragement BigChoc...well whaddya know... Just checked my BMI and it turns out I'm 29.7. Proper NSV there. Smile

confusedandemployed · 01/05/2015 12:00

Grr posted too soon there. Congrats MrsSPM, that is fantastic! I can only dream!!
Good luck with TTC carrot. One's enough for me Wink

mrswhiskers · 01/05/2015 12:13

The problem with the clothes NSVs is that it ends up you have nothing to wear Grin (I always feel I have nothing to wear anyway mind you!)

bigchoc I can't actually remember being this weight in my life. probably haven't been since I was about 10 years old. I do remember being taken clothes shopping at around 11 years old and having to get a women's size 14 Blush

mrswhiskers · 01/05/2015 12:15

I've just realised that I've not eaten for the past 24 hours as yesterday was a fast day and I only had a lunch and I've been so busy this morning that I forgot all about eating. have even done 20 minutes HIIT and feel great! Smile

stripytees · 01/05/2015 12:33

mrsw I feel quite sad about some favourite clothes getting too big for me. Luckily I've bought a lot of things that were too small at the time - especially online purchases - and have a lot of things I really like but have never been able to wear! Looking forward to fitting into them soon. I'm actually considering learning to alter clothes; I have several A line skirts that should be fairly simple to take in at least.

BigChocFrenzy · 01/05/2015 13:20

Congrats on your SV, confused
Nice surprise for you - jumping in the sub-30 BMI band too !
Flowers
MrsW That's so sad to hear about when you were aged 11. Well, enjoy your low weight now and enjoy shopping for new clothes.
If you have family around, I'm sure they can see the difference.
Now have a really good meal, before you forget again. It's important when you exercise to feed those hungry muscles well, so they can repair themselves.

Stripy I suspect NOONE has much sympathy that your clothes are too big Grin

OP posts:
mrswhiskers · 01/05/2015 13:48

I'm sad about some too-big clothes too stripy especially 3 pairs of designer jeans that RRP at over £100 a pair that I got for £4 on ebay! Still, I have gained (or lost!) so much more, a new, fit and healthy body, it's worth the loss of a few favourite clothes!

have just had my lunch, a vegetable lasagne that I used to tolerate because it was good for me. Now I think it's absolutely delicious. how my tastes have changed....

igivein · 01/05/2015 14:02

Congrats Mrs H and Confused - I dream of being overweight!

Weigh in day for me. Week17, 4lb loss, 47lbs in total - very pleased, I might get to be overweight one day at this rate!

Been to the gym this morning for my 'induction', I'm expecting to ache tomorrow in places I didn't even know I had places ... But on a positive note I'm going out to dinner tonight, And I might wear a lovely silk dress I last wore on millennium eve (and it was a bit tight then).
