Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced on BBC Horizon on August 2012:
Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means somewhere around the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

For most folk, 5:2 results in a weekly 3,000 calorie deficit, so averages 1 lb loss. However, some folk may lose much more quickly / slowly, or in fits & starts.
Initial weight loss may be much quicker, especially if you have a lot of weight to lose.

When you are within a healthy BMI range and just want to trim a few more lb, progress may be much slower and you may need to monitor carefully that you don't average above TDEE on non-fast days.

Acronyms & Calculators:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight normally needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

BMI ( Body Mass Index ) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9
FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men) or 1000 cals for BF
If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful website or app to track food & drink caloriesi

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day. TDEE is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this over the week's NFDs.

To speed up your weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight,
but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that to maintain our new healthy weight longterm requires a permanent change in how we eat.

How to Start

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator above as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Many prefer to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar and junk food. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have past or present EDs, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting
==================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was fat, not muscle, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease
Also this ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLongo and a LongoInterview

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

Terrific successes here. Very interested in the reduction in joint pain that Stripy and others have reported.

I'm holidaying in England and doing ok with the 5:2 stuff. There are so many low-cal options here. Dizzying array of cupasoups in the corner shop. Might actually shed a pound or two here despite the pasties, salt n vinegar crisps, Bakewell tarts and other goodies you can't get in Eastern Europe. Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 01/05/2015 14:45

Well done on your SV, igivein and on your gym induction.
Even if you ache a bit at first, you will soon feel fitter and proud of your progress. Beginners make rapid fitness gains in the first several weeks, which is motivating.

You are losing at an excellent rate, which will bring you safely down the BMI bands to your goal.

Thanks, BigChoc. It really is lovely to be back. No posh supermarkets here, but we've been pigging out on healthy stuff from the co-op and Sainsbury's. Will avoid wheat (I have been eating buckwheat daily for a year; the Russians are obsessed with the stuff ) but everything else sounds fabulous.

Also enjoying my husband's huge dumbbells and the exercycle that no one remembers buying. Just wish it weren't so cold here! It's about fifteen degrees cooler than Moscow was on Wednesday.

Dognado · 01/05/2015 18:42

Hello, can I join you please? Second fast today after being convinced I wouldn't be able to do it (carbs and chocolate emotional eater with stressful job!). But here I am!

I found the first fast not too bad, hungry at lunchtime but then seemed to go past that and wasn't really hungry at all after that with no other symptoms. Today I just feel cold, miserable and hungry though. Is it normal for 2nd to be worse than first, does it get better or just a necessary evil?

Other thing I'm wondering about is I'm still breastfeeding but he's nearly three and only at night so pretty sure there's not a big additional calorie need there, so wondering if I should just not worry about that.

Anyway, rambling! Nice to join you all and thanks for the inspiring threads and info Smile

confusedandemployed · 01/05/2015 18:43

igivein your losses are fab, I hope that keeps you motivated!
mildly hope you're enjoying your trip back home.
I have had a manic day. Just sitting down with a cold bottle of beer...148cal Wink. Will be taking it easy though, I have my hen night tomorrow.

Welcome, dog

Fasting usually takes a couple of weeks to get used to, but let's see if you might want to change anything.
Some tips & questions too re the FD:

. How close together were your FDs ? Easier with 2 or 3 days between them.
. Did you change what you ate on FDs ? Concentrate on protein & veg, cut out or reduce starches. No sweets or juice - save those for NFDs
. Was supper the night before very carby or did you have late sweet treats or alcohol ? That can make an FD tough. For NFD supper, try to have protein, veg, complex carbs and no alcohol, sweets or juice.
. Have a teasp Marmite from the jar, to top up salt & minerals.
. Drink plenty of water
. As you are BFing a little, you could try 700 cals, then reduce to 500 on days you feel able.

Ye gods,
I work for 3 days and there are hundreds of posts !!
A couple I skimmed past

calfon
Do you realise how lucky you are to have a truly honest critical friend in your DD?
I go on so many bunfight threads where people assume ulterior motives about weight comments.
Your DD can only say it like it is.
Does she shred with you Grin

Also
excess skin with weight loss
A lady at my gym has lost half her bodyweight - she is about 5'2, age mid 50's and has shifted around 8 stone
she has no loose skin on her arms, legs, neck, back shoulders communal changing room, I'm telling the truth
she had a very saggy tummy which appears to have been tucked over Christmas
BUT
because she does bucket loads of yoga, pilates, bodypump, bodycombat, zumba, bodybalance, swimming
it was just skin they took off - she was back at the gym within weeks

If you lose steadily and keep the blood flow up, your skin will shrink
not fully : I'm stretch mark city : but enough to look good 96% of the time

Dognado · 01/05/2015 21:10

Thank you BigChoc, really appreciate the advice. Definitely some things I could change, I fasted Weds and today, so maybe Tues and Fri next week.

And I might have had a little chocolate late last night Blush

Today I've had really few carbs, but last night probably didn't help!

JimmyCorkhill · 01/05/2015 21:31

confusedandemployed congratulations on your impending wedding Flowers I had a super casual wedding too! What are you doing for your hen night?

My DH is doing 5:2 with me. He's had a rotten cold and been pretty stressed by work so has foregone the fasting days for the last 2 weeks...he has still lost weight (jammy bugger)! We think this is because of our new outlook on NFDs - smaller portions/less snacking/mindful eating.

I have a real soft spot for Slimming World as I met some lovely people there after DD2 was born but ye gods! When I think of what I ate, the calorie amount for each day must have been so high. Unlimited pasta/4 million 'free' Muller Light yogurts/endless bananas. How I lost any weight with them I don't know Wink

Almost as if we willed it, a new gym is opening within walking distance of our house. No contract and a cheapish monthly fee if you join now. They do tabata and kettlebell classes too as well as having a large free weights area.

Just finished my 2nd FD of the week and did a fasted run. This thread is my willpower! Thought I ought to post as I really get inspiration from everyone else.

And on a final note, Asda are selling new Warburton's thin bagels at only 120 cals each! Pack of 6 for 98p. I can vouch for their loveliness.

BigChocFrenzy · 01/05/2015 21:35

You should find 5:2 easier after a couple of weeks, dog
Do post whenever you need moral support or advice.

FD is nearly over today, so I suggest you clean your teeth, to give a fresh taste and stop temptation. Then an early night to catch up on sleep; always good to be kind to yourself on FDs.
Same to all the other Friday fasters, you can have it tomorrow Smile

Thanks confused well done on your SV too, no need to dream, the way your going it'll be a reality soon Wink and have a wonderful Hen Night tomorrow night, let the hair down and enjoy Grin

carrot the best of luck on your journey ttc mini carrot #2....

Have a good weekend everyone, I'll check in on Monday for the first FD of the week Smile

MrsStevenPatrickMorrissey · 01/05/2015 21:43

Ohh forgot to say hi and welcome to dog Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 01/05/2015 21:47

Well done on your fasted run, Jimmy That gym sounds ideal, walking distance, Tabata, kettles, weights, wow ! Go for it. It could really rev up and broaden your fitness.
Chaps lose more easily on any diet < curses, snarls >: your DH has more muscle mass and higher TDEE, so even with 600 cal FDs, he probably has an extra 1000 cal weekly deficit.

I'm amazed if SW still allows unlimited pasta, bananas, yoghurts - a carb fest that keeps insulin levels sky high. I'd expect some folk to have flabby waists and be TOFIs even if they reach normal BMI. Scales are a crude measure.

Enjoy your hen do tomorrow, confused and telll us the scandalous details about it afterwards Grin

Thank you for the good wishes everyone Smile
Looking forward to tonight: off to Cardiff for food, followed by Little Voice karaoke (those private booths in Tiger Tiger, where you only embarrass yourself in front of your mates). I am a karaoke whore, I love it. After that - we'll see!
I decided not to mix groups of friends, but I already had a surprise hen in London a couple of weeks ago, organised by one of my best friends. Tonight is Old Skool - quite literally. School friends only. Next week - a small gathering of local mates then, 2 days before the wedding my sis and I are having a spa day with one of my besties who is coming over from Africa for the wedding. LOADS of hen activities. How did that happen?!
So today I will try to keep food intake low as we're eating out tonight. No doubt that I will go way over TDEE though! I think I have enough calories banked though.
Enjoy Saturday everyone.
..no one is hardcore daft enough to do a Saturday FD are they??!

mildlyacquiescent · 02/05/2015 08:12

Confused, have fun!

I am going to attempt a Saturday fast. Grin Possible because will spend the day with my health-conscious mate and necessary because we plan to have a mahoosive pub lunch tomorrow.

Good luck to other Saturday mawomen and men fasting today. Smile (Can also vouch for those Warburton's thin bagels... delicious! )

SalaciousCrumb · 02/05/2015 10:50

HI all, I was going to weigh in today (lost 5lb last week) but I know from experience trying to follow ww and sw that I have gone off the boil after 2nd wi, and bearing in mind I had a mahoosive pile of chips last night [embarrassed] thought I'd leave it until midweek or even a week today.

Had another FD on Thursday, did not go as well as my Tuesday fast but still a decent calorie deficit. Only I was very hungry yesterday. I am guessing this is the natural rhythm of our bodies, one day fast then eat more the next day. I am still running on the carbs and fat I think, went for a run and not eaten yet today!

People have commented already that I look like I've lost weight Smile

mildly good luck with your Saturday fast. Enjoy your pub lunch tomorrow.

Dog I know what you mean about carbs, I am the same, love bread and potatoes!

Mrs Steven Me too, FD on Monday. I am planning on taking instant porridge to work with a banana (284 cals), and a tin of chickpeas, half made into a salad when I arrive home from work at 3pm and the other half in the evening (around 280 cals) black coffee and water to drink.

Enjoy Saturday everybody.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/05/2015 12:59

Mildly I often do Saturday or Sunday FDs, to keep down the weekend damage.

Salacious Your compliments NSV should keep you motivated.
If you aim for your TDEE on NFDs, you'll stay on track and keep losing.

In future, I recommend plenty of protein with your chips, like a nice juicy steak or fish. Protein keeps you fuller for longer and calms the carb monster.
Excess carbs are stored with 3 times their weight in water, so always alarming if you weigh the next day. I suggest weighing weekly after the 2nd FD, for consistency.

OP posts:
SauceForTheGander · 03/05/2015 10:02

I've been lurking for a few weeks - thanks for all your posts. I started FD on Monday & Wednesdays a few weeks ago. What I've noticed though is a lot of damage is done Fridays & weekends. I look forward to fasting Monday because I feel I've over indulged. I may introduce ADF and do a mini fast on Friday - say 900 cals to keep myself in check.

I try not to weigh myself as I can become obsessive and let it dictate my mood for that day - but last time I weighed in I'd lost 3 pounds and my face looked more like my old slimmer self! I think I've put that back on as feeling bigger... that's not because I've been slacking on FD but because we've been out to friends' for some birthday dinners. But next week is a new determination to not undo my fasting days. I'm enjoying the rhythm of my week too.

BigChocFrenzy · 03/05/2015 11:44

Welcome, sauce
Smile
Most people settle down to 1lb weekly loss, which usually requires a calorie deficit of 3000 cals.
If you don't lost at least a few lb over the first month, then 3 main reasons:
. You are already lean
. You have meds or a condition like PCOS, thyroid
. You are eating back the calorie deficit on NFDs - the usual reason.

Weekends can totally undo a week of hard work, because it is so easy to go 1000s over TDEE if you eat & drink "all you want". I sometimes have an FD on Sat or Sun, even on maintenance, to avoid this.
Also, you may be over TDEE on the other NFDs.

The Friday mini-FD or 4:3 could help, if you don't eat more on NFDs to compensate.
I recommend you mfp for a full week, to check if only weekends are the problem and to identify calorie bombs, huge portions etc. Many folk get a huge shock when they realise their intake.
Calculate your TDEE as sedentary, since you are not losing.
You may need to continue mfp to train yourself how much to eat. This also prepares for maintenance. Otherwise, you would regain if you stop fasting.

Important: cut out snacks and grazing, because those habits usually lead to increased hunger & eating.

SauceForTheGander · 03/05/2015 13:07

Thank you BigChoc really helpful Flowers

I think your advice is spot on and I think fast days have made me mindful of how many calories I consume via picking at food - Kids' left overs, whilst I'm cooking & on the go.

confusedandemployed · 03/05/2015 21:12

Hello all
Well my hen night was a blast! Had to be chucked out of the bar at 3am, we had such fun dancing we didn't want to leave!
Had chicken Caesar salad in the restaurant - very diet friendly really, but drank prodigious amounts of bottled beer. Today has been fragile, and I just had pizza for tea! Looking forward to a FD tomorrow to reset. Then FD on Wed too and I may add in a 16:8 on Thursday this week, or I suspect I won't lose this week.
Off to sleep now, I have some catching up to do!

BigChocFrenzy · 03/05/2015 21:52
