The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week.
Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Thank you TheHoney, sorry you are not well. I have just worked it out - 1798 kcal, still seems generous.

Yes about now is a dangerous time for me when I would usually be sharing a couple of rich teas and hot milk with DD.

I plan on an early night (DH away so I can go to bed when DD does), with a bottle of water and a cup of herbal tea along with the 5:2 book and my current read which is Christmas at Cold Comfort Farm (to bring a bit of cheer!).

I am sure I will be back with more stupid questions tomorrow.

BigChocFrenzy · 17/11/2014 19:41

Welcome back, Sauvignon You'll soon remember your old FD meals
Smile
I hope you feel better tomorrow, Honey

Berceuse There are no stupid questions. Ask whatever you want or just tell us about your day.

Infinity Get cooking !
Hang in there, Monday fasters, you've nearly done it. Have supper, then close the kitchen.
Smile

Bimblepops · 17/11/2014 19:43

Ask away, Berceuse, we only know the answers because we've previously asked the same questions!

Well done all fasters!

Feeling very virtuous having realised that I have a trio of success today - FD, 16:8 and Fast 5. Yay me! Kitchen now closed except for a cup of herbal tea once the kids have gone to bed.

TalkinPeace · 17/11/2014 20:01

Shakshouka for supper tonight - splendid and full
done the easy way with a tup of veg soup and some tomatoes and then squeeze in enough eggs for 4 Smile

Ainat266 · 17/11/2014 21:25

I was supposed to have a FD today and all was going well until DH forgot and made me dinner.

I'll just do it tomorrow instead now. :) I'm going to make a target of drinking 1 litre of water (water water) and to try and ensure I am drinking plenty of other fluids that can count as water too. Today I have drunk 3 cups of tea, but that's about it! And the first one of those was at lunch time. I hadn't realised how little I have drunk until I have just been thinking about it now..

BetsyBell · 17/11/2014 21:47

I did my first fast day in months today! I haven't felt the need for a while as I've been moderate and straightforward in my eating and drinking. However, much celebration of various birthdays over the weekend and I woke up full and thought, hmm yes, I remember this feeling - post-weekend fast day needed :)

So it is done and I'm ready for bed!

Well done to all those who are finishing up their Monday fast - very nearly there folks!

ErrolTheDragon · 17/11/2014 22:00

The shakshuka sounds good... I've never tried that. Anyway, near the end of another standard FD, one large mug of decaff tea to go.

annielewis · 17/11/2014 23:44

Hi everyone, was going to do a FD but DH bought home brownies and I am sleep deprived and cold, so ended up at about 850 instead.. Still counts as a mini fast though so that's ok..

errol I really need to be not sedentary too, (not just to up my tdee- honest!Grin) but am stuck at home with kids all day and find it hard to go to gym, and hard to know what to do once in there!! I need to join Zumba classes again or something!!

How's everyone else doing?

BigChocFrenzy · 18/11/2014 00:39

Annie You can exercise at home, no need for gym. Why not check out the 52ExerciseThread2 for ideas.
If you need more help, post something there about your fitness level, exercise preferences, any joint issues etc and I can suggest a suitable training program.

OP posts:
TheHoneyBadger · 18/11/2014 07:22

well done on breaking the seal betsy - feels good to get that first one done and remember how it feels.

likewise i need to up my activity annie but struggle due to working from home and home educating. my activity always came organically as in i didn't drive and so walking was just what i did and i worked a couple of miles away plus had the school run etc. hoping to move in the nearish future and be back somewhere with things to walk to and more to do generally. i find artificial exercise hard to motivate myself for so prefer to just be walking a lot of places with a genuine purpose for walking there itms.

i shall be fasting today.

BetsyBell · 18/11/2014 08:16

I'd forgotten how little I sleep after a fast day though HB. But that's why we have lovely caffeine to help us through Grin. I am a complete convert to black coffee with a scant half spoon of coconut oil these days. I much prefer it to milk now.

TheHoneyBadger · 18/11/2014 08:46

i've stuck to the black coffee betsy - that is one of the permament changes i made back when we started and the way i used to drink it (milk and a sugar) tastes like milkshake now it's bizarre. such a simple change to make yet it extends fasting much further for me as i don't eat till afternoon anyway but was getting calories from the coffee.

just been finding out about fast exercise and am intrigued. i'm definitely not genetically disposed to building muscle and even when i was diving instructor lifting tanks on and off taxis and boats day in and day out in 50 degrees of heat i never really built muscle just was long and lean. in the past where i've tried to use exercise like the gym to 'get fit' or burn fat i've seen no real results from it.

might give HIT a try - seems far more 'me' and i like the sound of the improvement in mitrochondria business as that's known to be a mechanism related to some health problems i've had.

any tips gratefully received - i can't get the ap as it's apple-fied.

TheHoneyBadger · 18/11/2014 08:46

i don't sleep much anyway betsy so that side doesn't really effect me - tend to be awake between 5 and 6am every day.

Breadandwine · 18/11/2014 09:59

Mazzle, I finally got around to veganising your recipe - and I made it Gf in the process.

It's our monthly coffee morning today, and I generally take my GF chocolate cake - but I thought I'd follow your muffin recipe (a bit!) for a change.

For sweetening, I had been soaking some dates for the past few days, which I blitzed.

100g Doves GF self-raising flour
100g dates (which turned into 150g after soaking)
100g water (50g of which was the soaking liquid from the dates)
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon mixed spice
1 apple, peeled and chopped small

I mixed the flour and spice together, then combined the water, vanilla and dates and added that, followed by the apple.

I mixed the whole thing together and made it into a cake, which I microwaved for 5 minutes.

Unfortunately, I forgot to include any oil - it should have had 40g in there.

It's OK - recognisably cake, but not as sweet as it could be. Perhaps 200g of dates would have been better. I've had a couple of slices with some h/m (not mine) gooseberry jam, and it's perfectly acceptable.

It's the first time I've used dates as a sweetener - it's something I'll try again.

TheHoneyBadger · 18/11/2014 10:01

sorry for multiple posts this morning but had a go at HIT and i like it! really woke me up and i jumped in the shower after and am now fully dressed and washed and feeling like getting out and doing stuff which is unheard of at this time of the morning in my work from home bubble Blush usually sat at my desk drinking coffee and working in my pjs at this stage.

hard to believe something so small can make a real difference but definitely willing to give it a go.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 18/11/2014 13:02

I am supposed to be fasting today but have had 2 eggs scrambled in butter, as part of an attempt to get DD (age 2, has throat infection) to eat something, anything. She didn't. Scrambled eggs aren't the end of the world, I could just have soup for dinner, but I'm really struggling with motivation with 2 ill children and a heavy cold myself. Gah. I'm not really hungry, I suppose. I'll see how I get on.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/11/2014 14:13

HIIT uses the same principle of hormesis (robustness via intermittent high stress untervals) as IF, so it complements IF very well. It is very efficient at fat-burning and can help some metabolic / endocrine issues.
I've saved my posts on the theory and background, if anyone likes geek stuff.

Honey I frequently recommend HIIT on these threads and my OP on the 52ExerciseThread2 outlines theory and references.

HIIT is a huge field, so I don't know if you were looking for a particular App. HIIT ranges from very short concentrated routines like Tabata or Mosely's Fat Blasts to hour-long HIIT spin or lifting. Martial arts are usually HIIT as well.
I list a lot of HIIT routines on that thread, including some I cribbed from Mosely.

Sorry I've been AWOL everyone!

Had a very slacking week over the last 7 days ... Sure have made up for having the gastro bug Blush

Went to have another dress alteration today and I really need to shift some weight .. It was extremely tight Blush

Had a good day today though, so onwards and upwards. Hope everyone is ok!

ErrolTheDragon · 18/11/2014 20:04

annie - I exercise at home, I'm one of the Jillian Michaels addicts. But I do it HIIT-style - go for it as hard as I can (esp the cardio intervals), hit the pause to recover, continue etc. A lot of people seem to find it's more doable than going out to a gym. honey - I know what you mean about being more motivated by 'real' exercise - one of the things that keeps me going at the exercise dvds is that it makes me more capable to do real stuff better - sailing, windsurfing in summer, walking anytime - and gardening without aches and pains nowadays too!

JollyGolightly · 18/11/2014 20:45

I'm back to report on what my GP said about IF in pregnancy - some people were interested to find out.

He didn't know. So he asked all the other GPs at the practice and called me back once he had canvassed opinion. The general consensus was that fasting isn't great in pregnancy because of metabolic changes from early pregnancy onwards, but that as I am overweight (BMI 26) it is ok for me to continue to lose weight by reducing calorie intake. He suggested 1500 per day but I think it might need to be slightly lower. So now I'm getting my head around counting calories all day every day, rather than just 2 days per week, and if all goes well I'll be back in the Summer for IF while breastfeeding.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/11/2014 21:51

Jolly Many thanks for letting us know what your GP said, which was as expected: fasting has a powerful effect on the body and its effects during pregnancy have not been researched.
Sorry to lose you from 5:2, but best wishes

Fasting again today. Anyone else?

Good day yesterday - 16:8, lovely Thai meal for lunch, toast and houmous for dinner, didn't need/want any more food than that. 1300cals for the day.

jellypi3 · 19/11/2014 11:07

Yep I'm fasting today. Two black coffee's down (and a mint). Feeling fine so far!

Breadandwine · 19/11/2014 11:48

Yup, I'm in - 3/4 through a 24hr LOF, ATM - won't eat until 6.50 tonight. Alternating warm water and black coffee and feeling great!

There's a wonderful bit of advice to someone about to binge here, from someone who calls herself Decaff - it's about the 5th post down.

annielewis · 19/11/2014 14:16

Yep me too! Not doing too badly so far - just tea and coffee.

Jolly thats really interesting about your GP's advice, and one that I will action too if I get pregnant soon. So, fasting for long periods not advised but you can restrict cals to 1500 per day. Sounds good. Your BMI is not that overweight either...

Errol I've got the Jillian dvds too - hadn't thought about doing it as HIIT workouts. Struggle with some of her stuff as have ongoing back pain, she's a legend though!!
