Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 47: School’s out for summer! Holidays creating havoc with your fasting? DCs driving you to drink and donuts? Help is at hand right here...

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together the original OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BREASTFEEDERS: Start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: Is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: If pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: If you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).

Hello I've been doing 5:2 since Jan and have lost 10 lbs - I wasn't very overweight to start with. So I've gone from 9 stone 10 to 9 stone which is pretty much my target weight. I'm 5 ft 5, smallish frame. I do find that the day after a fast I am ravenous and basically desperate for carbs and can't get down to the toaster fast enough. This seems to differ from many of you. I'd like to eat more healthily but can't seem to do it. Any tips? ThAnks

livelablove · 09/08/2014 08:17

That is brilliant Rosie and they say it is harder to lose that last stone to get to your goal weight so it sounds like you are doing great.

Can you say a bit more about what you eat on NFDs then we could give advice about how to make it a bit healthier.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/08/2014 09:45

Welcome Rosie Well done on your SV. 9 stone is brilliant.
Smile
On FDs, do you concentrate on protein and veg ? If you have starches or fruit juice, this could be causing more hunger the next day.
Try saving cals for a protein FD supper.

On NFDs, avoid sweet breakfast cereals as they will just make you hungrier.
Have plenty of protein and a bit of fat with your carbs,
e.g. scrambled / boiled eggs / cheese omelette with toast

Avoid snacks, just have bigger meals.
If you want NFD treats later in the day, have them as your dessert after the meal, but do NOT have treats at breakfast time.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/08/2014 09:53

Oh and if you are eatimg white bread, rice etc on NFDs, switch to wholegrain bread, quinoa, brown rice.
Complex carbs digest over a longer period, so you don't get so hungry.

Check the quality of your NFD treats, because they can cause more hunger, as well as being calorie bombs.
A good guideline is to keep "junk cals" to 10-20% of your TDEE. e.g. for TDEE 2000, allow 200-400 cals for the day.

Breadandwine · 09/08/2014 10:16

Hi Rosie

And try and push your breakfast time back later and later, until you may be able to give it up altogether. That's what most of us have done. It does get easier with practice.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/08/2014 12:54

Most of us skip FD breakfast and sometimes on some NFDs too, but the day after an FD most folk need a good protein breakfast, or it would make a very long fast.
If you are hungry on NFDs, have breakfast.

Anyone who does 16:8 could skip supper instead - that gave very good weight loss in a study of people with Type 2 Diabetes

Rosie70 · 09/08/2014 15:00

Brilliant advice thank you so much! I may be posting on the exercise thread soon as now I'm at my target weight need to turn my focus to toning up. Slim but wobbly with a flabby stomach still...

Poppy1234 · 09/08/2014 19:30

The advice on her is just fantastic, I had never though of 16:8 without supper as a maintenance option (I'm a huge breakfast fan).

The scales were kind and I've lost 2.9kgs in my first week so I'm really thrilled, 5kgs to go to target but I'm ready for it to slow down considerably now.

Rosie, congratulations on reaching your target, so motivating to hear success stories.

Livelablove, I love cooking and food, it really is my passion and more of a hobby, I'm a SAHM to a 3 and 4 year old so it does keep my sane. The yogurt recipe is super easy, I make it in the slow cooker.

BetsyBell · 09/08/2014 20:44

Right. I am back. The overindulgence must stop! A fantastic holiday with much, excellent outdoorsy-sea-coastal activity - so much exercise achieved. However, also, many large, convivial, group meals with a heavy emphasis on carbs, ice cream and wine. I now feel bloated and a bit crud, and am no longer the svelte self I'd got used to having around.

So tomorrow, fast day.

Then, back to no more booze and general white carb/sugar avoidance.

And certainly no snacking!

I am not weighing in: I can see the damage clearly and I know how to get rid of the excess.

I am meant to be in training for a couple of 10k runs coming up - I don't feel like I could do half that right now so I need to re-energise. Fasting will really help with that. My poor digestive system needs a rest.

On the plus side, I've been practising handstands on the beach almost daily (I think this might be something discussed on the exercise thread) and they are improving :)

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 09/08/2014 21:28

Betsy Your hols sounds blissful and you'll soon deal with the ice cream gain.

Well done on your SV, Poppy and weaving your own yoghurt.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/08/2014 22:13

Betsy Seven days without ice cream makes one weak
but seven days with ice cream shrinks your jeans

gwhizz75 · 10/08/2014 10:27

Welcome Rosie and congrats on your weight loss and reaching your target. I might join you on the exercise thread soon as could definitely do with toning up a bit. I'm rubbish at sticking to exercise though - I tend to go from doing absolutely nothing, to exercising every day for a while, and then back to doing nothing. It's usually very all or nothing!

Betsy your hols sound fab and it is nice knowing that even when you are over indulging, you can have a couple of fast days when you get back and you'll almost be back to where you started. Plus if you got lots of exercise then you probably won't have been too far over your TDEE (maybe just an ice cream or two over!).

I am back on track after my Commonwealth feast last weekend. I did two fast days in a row on Monday and Tuesday - wasn't really planned but I didn't feel very hungry on the Tuesday morning and as my OH was away that night, it seemed like a good time to get it out of the way. I also did a mini fast day yesterday and I weighed myself this morning to find I am down another 1.5lbs. That brings my total weight loss to around 5lbs in 4 weeks and ideally, would like to lose 7 more.

Have decided to try cutting out lots of food nasties this week (e.g. white bread and pasta, sugar, cakes, chocolate, processed foods etc) to see how that affects things. This will start after my big sunday dinner and creme brûlée at lunch time today however!!

BetsyBell · 10/08/2014 10:43

It was exceptional ice cream bigchoc, but I've had my fill and ready to ditch the sugar the again.

Pouring with rain here and certainly feeling we chose the right week to have a British sea side holiday!

gwhizz - the keeping up with the exercise certainly helped! If only the sea air didn't make you so ravenously hungry all the time, hee hee. I did weigh in after all and it wasn't nearly so bad as I thought, although the extra couple of lbs are seriously jiggly ones.

But yes, am fasting today and already feeling back on track even though it's only 10.30am

I would certainly recommend the cutting out of everything on that list - it is amazing how much better you feel when you don't eat that stuff. It might take a few days for your body to accept the change - it can certainly object with headaches and whatnot as there is a certain level of addiction to it all that you have to work through. But once through that few days you will feel amazing and wonder why you put yourself through it.

And yes, I am going cold turkey too, so am reminding myself how much better I will feel too Grin

Now drinking strong black coffee with a half a tsp of coconut oil, then nothing but water and herbal tea until I make a main meal of Thai fish curry for mid afternoon.

Any other Sunday fasters here today? It's not a popular day for it!

OP posts:
Poppy1234 · 10/08/2014 11:53

Betsy good luck with your Sunday fast, your holiday sounded lovely and good to know the damage wasn't as bad as expected.

*Gwhizz75" I've already cut out most grains and sugar and it really does help, although very dark 90% chocolate is low in sugar and doesn't seem to trigger cravings. Glad to know the fast days sorted your treat weekend, we're going away next weekend so I think the key will be to get back into fasting straight away.

We were meant to go on a huge dog walk with friends today but it's just too wet and our roads were flooded so we're stuck inside climbing the walls. I'm waiting for a break in the rain to head out with the dog to get a bit of headspace. The summer holidays are taking their toll a bit (we have 8 weeks in Northern Ireland and school finished on 30th June), the kids are a bit too young for summer schemes and I have no family support and a very busy husband so it is just me and them 24/7. Anyway, enough woe is me.

I'm finding today a tough NFD, I want to eat everything in sight and I know it's just boredom.

Strangely looking forward to another fast day tomorrow and being back in control, I'm going to give up the dairy next week, my food diary shows I am far too reliant on it and I'm going to experiment with veg and good fats fast days and see how I go. Tomorrow will only be fast day 6 so it's all about experiment.

Right, I'm off to shake this bad mood and enjoy the rest of Sunday.

Bollard · 10/08/2014 20:45

Bleurgh, I am eating too much on NFDs! Seriously looking forward to getting some control back on tomorrow's FD. The sugar monster sneaks up and awakens this insatiable appetite for beige food and it makes me bloated, sluggish and ratty.

DH is away with 2 of the DCs and I'm home with the other 2. We have no family backup either and if tonight's wind and rain carry on we'll struggle next week. It's crazy how used one gets to beautiful weather! All my ideas for the week are dependant on clear days.

BetsyBell · 10/08/2014 20:51

Sunday fast has been a success and DH was very happy to realise he won't be fasting on first work day back too! We might do this Sunday lark more often.

My tiny engagement ring is feeling pleasantly loose again after a few days of being worryingly snug, to the point of painfulness. Grin

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 10/08/2014 21:23

Well done, Betsy
I fasted yesterday. I usually choose Saturday or Sunday, because it's a tactic I developed back in my Frenzy days, to limit the damage.
I find it gives me extra time at the weekend.

Breadandwine · 11/08/2014 10:58

Hard to believe that we've allowed the 2nd anniversary of Dr Mosley's Horizon programme to pass by unmarked!

Flowers to Dr M and his team!

It's currently available, BTW, on iPlayer, for a limited time, I understand.

I made the mistake of making some vegan biscuits last night - my first attempt and I've over-cooked them, so they're a bit very crunchy! Made 25 and I've only got 8 left. The mistake was in not freezing most of them! Ah, well, I start a 24 hour LOF this evening. I'll get an early start, hopefully, and have dinner over by 6.00pm.

tiggermummy70 · 11/08/2014 16:13
BigChocFrenzy · 11/08/2014 17:59

How have you been doing, TiggerMum ? Smile

Trenzalor · 11/08/2014 21:06

Breadandwine I made that mistake with my first ever batch of vegan choc chip cookies. Now I lurk by the oven door. I also freeze 2/3 of anything I bake now as it saved gorging/waste. I think vegan baked goods freeze/defrost really well.

Live I jumped off the weighing bandwagon after you. I just had to know if it was working! Still, I made it to two weeks. Tbh my weight has just fluctuated a little but the inch loss is impressive!

tiggermummy70 · 12/08/2014 09:46

Well since I had an issue and could not get the app to work or get logged into the site, my feet haven't really touched the floor.
Kinda felt I'd lost my way in a lot of things.
Need to refocus and move on.

End of term for girlies - always manic actually made it to a sports day! Even took part in the mums race.
School reports were awesome, both showing great potential to do well.
Was a Clyde-sider based in Dundee as 1st responder at the Shooting events for 5 days. covered over 60miles in those five days (just walking!)
Celebrated being with my husband been together 25 years (married 16)
Got old - 44th!
Eldest went camping with council play project and came home with swollen face and two black eyes!
Husband had an op last Monday and he is still suffering now.
He had the snip + another op but he is very swollen.....
Eldest has referral to see ENT tomorrow to check her face, and she is already stressing.
They don't know it yet but tonight they are going to see Charlie & the chocolate factory.
Eldest has set herself a personal challenge to raise some monies for the London Air Ambulance so she is doing a 5K in her costume I made last year. Set a target of £100 and it is currently at £305. So we've now increased it to £500 as she has a month to go. An average flight costs £2500.

I suspect I have gained about 7lbs but I haven't even had a chance to step on the scales. I need to take control of my house and de-clutter it, whilst working around a husband with hoarding tendencies.
I feel like I want him to go away for a week on his own and leave me to sort the house without him there to try and change my mind.

Sorry for the vent

Hope everyone is well.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 12/08/2014 11:04

Hmm well best laid plans. Today was meant to be first fast post-holiday, but my asthma has really flared up over the last couple of days and I feel really unwell.

However, I've totally ditched the evening cheese fest snacking again and dinner is back to normal proportions. I weighed this morning and I'm just over half a pound down on last week. Not great, not terrible :)

I'm going to still do the FD dinner which I had planned, bolognaise over a bowl of green vegetables, but I will be having some lunch and as much tea and coffee with milk as I feel the need for.

LosBreakingBad · 12/08/2014 11:29

FD for me today. I think it's going to be quite hard as my eldest son left home on Sunday. I'm so sad. He's been back from uni for four years, so this move is a forever move. I spent most of yesterday crying. Pathetic I know.
My plan today is to be nice to myself but to keep out of the kitchen. So far so good, but it's quite early yet. Wish me luck.

DramaAlpaca · 12/08/2014 12:07

FD for me too. I struggled a bit last week, a few things going on, but managed two mini FDs instead. Hungry now.

Los I really feel for you Flowers & Brew. It's hard letting them go, even though it's the natural order of things. My eldest went off to uni & came back two years later having decided it's not for him. He's now at home getting under my feet while he decides what to do with his life. Middle one gets exam results tomorrow so I am having a major wibble about him going away in the next few weeks, assuming all goes well.
