The continuing thread for those of us following 5:2 or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on BBC Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is similar, except you fast on 3 days in the week.
ADF (Alternate-day fasting) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links:
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMI already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women exercisers who reported health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, severe anxiety, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Ditto live. Guess I'll just push on through though. Missing the weekly weigh in - I hadn't realised how much I counted on it for motivation.

MelanieCheeks · 28/07/2014 11:03

Started with great intentions this morning, but my tummy is decidedly "off". On the plus side, it makes it easier not to eat anything!

meadowquark · 28/07/2014 11:21

Mornign fellow fasters and fellow snackers. I had a wild weekend (food wise) - it seems like every weigh-in completely does my head in.
If the weight loss is too small, I end up eating my frustration.
If the weight loss is good enough, I feel too overwhelmed.

My FD this morning started off quite bad. Probably a consequence of high carb over the weekend. I had 2 white sugary coffees, cottage cheese and 2 squares of chocolate. I am hoping to pull out at 600kcal today.. fingers crossed.

lagoon · 28/07/2014 12:19

Hello everyone, FD for me today. I am so so so tired today, not so much hungry but exhausted! Am drinking gallons of sparkling water... Tempted to have a black coffee....
Does anyone else have any off symptoms on FDs? I have odd twingy pains in my lower legs like the start of a cramp when I'm fasting. Used to get this before as well, strange.
Working til 3:45 then hitting the gym. Hope everyone is ok :-)

lagoon · 28/07/2014 12:26

PS - wafts of food around the office = torture.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/07/2014 12:41

Meadow Have you joined the monthly weight-in gang ? That should ease the stress.

Lagoon A teaspoon of Marmite should help avoid cramps, as well as headaches
A black coffee or espresso is a good energy boost.

Oh this seems like a very tough fast day! I have taken dd to a cafe and she had a sausage roll while I had coffee now having a cupasoup there are 80 cals in it but if I decide I like having soup for lunch I might try to find a lower calorie one or make some soup but I will see how I feel after having it. I think I am going to want some lunch on FDs while dd and I are home for holidays, but this leaves me less calories for dinner.

livelablove · 28/07/2014 13:03

Just worked out my cals on mfp for my planned dinner and the soup and some milk and it worked out to exactly 500cals.

MelanieCheeks · 28/07/2014 13:11

My planned cupasoup was the Ainsley Harriott szechuan flavour - it's about 65 calories.

But I decided it would be too spicy for my tum, so I had a string cheese instead.

Miso soups are usually the lowest calorie option, ranging from 18-30 per sachet.

livelablove · 28/07/2014 13:31

Thanks melanie I will look out for it. I do feel slightly less hungry after the soup but still feeling a bit like raiding the cupboard.

ditsygal · 28/07/2014 17:06

FD here, I am determined to do 2 FD's this week, as the last two weeks I havn't done my second one. I have meal planned for the week to make it easier. The last couple of weeks I have been focused on sorting my house to get it on the market, so now that's done I am hoping I can focus on diet and fitness for a bit. Aiming to start the shred again this week...
Feeling a bit yuck and could definitely eat to get a bit of energy, but only 2.5 hours until dinner now so I can wait.
High fives to everyone else on FD today - we are nearly through the day - hold on in there!

livelablove · 28/07/2014 17:28

I ended up eating some fruit earlier, I thought about quitting the FD right then but decided to continue even though I will be a bit over 500 now but I do think fasting helps reduce my appetite later in the week on NFD so even if I go a bit over it will still be beneficial. I hope I will keep my NFD cals tomorrow under control. I decided dropping from 1800 which is my TDEE now to 1550 my goal weight TDEE is too much of a drop in one go so I am going to drop 100 cals a week until I reach 1550. I have already had my dinner as we eat early, about 5ish, so quite a long evening ahead. I might have to eat something small later but will try not to. On NFDs I might start having a small supper about 7 or 8 to help me stop snacking all evening, or wanting to.

Bimblepops · 28/07/2014 18:02

Keep going Livelab, Ditsy, Melanie, Lagoon and Meadow - nearly at the end of the day!

FD tomorrow for me, I think. Feels very odd not fasting on a Monday, it's been my guaranteed FD for months now. Early supper for me this evening, then will aim to get a Shred in before bedtime.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/07/2014 19:06

Keep going, Monday fasters.
Not long now - have supper, close the kitchen and clean your teeth Smile

LiveLab Never abandon an FD just because you have eaten something extra. Even if it had been a few hundred cals, you would still have a good calorie deficit for the day

Bollard · 28/07/2014 21:36

FD done and kitchen closed Grin
We went to the cinema today and I had NO SWEETIES!

livelablove · 28/07/2014 22:03

Yay bollard that is brilliant!

Bimblepops · 28/07/2014 22:11

1257 cals consumed today and Shred done. Didn't quite manage to get 16:8, but close with 15hrs between meals yesterday and today!

Well done, Bollard - popcorn is my Achilles heel at the cinema, can eat a whole bucket of the stuff.

livelablove · 28/07/2014 23:15

that's really good bimble

KTP · 29/07/2014 04:45

Hello everyone, a newbie to this from Down Under. I started with a FD yesterday. Found it easy to hold off til lunch time for my first food, and made a delicious carrot/coriander soup as recommended on here. It was YUM. Went to bed with a slight headache (I am a migraine sufferer) but this morning woke up with a doozey of a migraine. Felt really nauseous. I've read around about migraine sufferers and 5:2, and think this may be a feature of fasting for me. I can stick it if I know the pain will resolve.....and four hours after getting up, it has receded. So, fingers crossed, I can cope with this.

Feeling really optimistic about this WOE, I'm a repeat failure when it comes to 'dieting' but knowing that the next day is a normal day is a great mind game for me. Off to buy scales today, and get a tape measure out.

livelablove · 29/07/2014 07:34

Hi KTP I find 5:2 very good, but I have not had any problems with fasting other than feeling hungry and a bit tired. Having a migraine seems difficult so hopefully you will get some good advice about that.

Some FDs seem harder than others yesterday I had a difficult one, didn't stick to 500 cals but was just under 700. I was pleased I didn't ditch the FD and eat everything in sight though. In the evening I made dd toast with nutella but she didn't want it (long story) it was still nice and hot, but I managed to throw it away and not eat it. Trying to stick to my TDEE today, I am going to drop down to 1700 per day but eat less if I can to save some extra calories for the weekend.

MelanieCheeks · 29/07/2014 07:42

Went slightly over as I had a Yakult to try to stem the tummy issues. But DH also pinched some of my prawn Vietnamese rolls, so that probably cancels it out!

Oooooh, I get so cross! Normally I'm happy to share food, but when you have planned and counted out an FD meal, and have been looking forward to eating it all day, someone else grabbing a handful of it is asking for trouble!

livelablove · 29/07/2014 08:07

Oh yes melanie that is really annoying if someone steals a bit of your FD meal!

meadowquark · 29/07/2014 09:35

Good morning. Well done for fasters yesterday and good luck for fasters today.

I blew my FD yesterday, right after eating my FD dinner at 6pm. I had an ice cream cone with my DS2, and, wait for it, .. I had 5 more ice cream cones, which makes 6 in total. I ate it in hiding so that my DS could not see it. I was ridden by a massive unexplained anxiety beforehand I think that what's prompted me to stuff myself.

I realise I need to work myself psychologically.
BCF yes I only weigh myself once in few weeks now, but I probably should stick with once in a year!

Today is another FD attempt for me. For some reason I am feeling much better today, much more confident and positive and know that today's FD is going to be just fine.

KTP Hello and welcome to our friendly bunch! I used to have quite a headache and bloated stomach, and felt really low in the first few weeks of 5:2. I am pleased to say that all side effects have long gone now, except is very hard to fall asleep after FD, but I seem to need less sleep overall so maybe there is nothing wrong with it.

Bimblepops · 29/07/2014 09:40

Good morning all,
Is anyone else fasting today?
I'm tired and in a serious grump and my poor children are bearing the brunt of it, got to try to snap out of it (store it up for my 'darling' husband!). Going to be a tough day...

livelablove · 29/07/2014 09:45

Hope you are OK meadow it is funny how the brain/body work and who knows what set you off eating ice creams. Anxiety is a funny thing basically the anxiety is just there sometimes for no particular reason. Glad you feel better today.
