Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 46: Wild about Satan's Whizz (Diet Coke) ? Lazy Low Carbers, Pissed-off Piscatorians, Voracious Vegans, Ferocious Flexitarians,....... IF/5:2 can help you lose weight healthily.

The continuing thread for those of us following 5:2 or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on BBC Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is similar, except you fast on 3 days in the week.
ADF (Alternate-day fasting) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links:
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMI already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women exercisers who reported health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, severe anxiety, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

So today is my first fast day in a while! Am at work til 4, not consuming anything except plain sparkling water, and having a 300 cal spicy creole prawn dish for dinner. Weighed myself this morning to motivate me, wasn't as heavy as I thought I would be (9st 10.5lb, I am 5'5 tall) but I feel flabby in myself so that'll be motivation enough...... Tummy rumbling already probably because I've just mentioned dinner!!

livelablove · 24/07/2014 10:18

Go for it Lagoon. A pp had problems cutting out caffeinated drinks on FD so if you normally have them it might be worth having your usual drinks or black version, to avoid headaches. Strangely working in a kitchen I am ok around food at work, but looking at a recipe book makes me feel starving. And if I get my dd a little snack I always really want some of it.

DramaAlpaca · 24/07/2014 10:23

I can report a little NSV Smile

I have high blood pressure, and I have been on medication for a while. On medication my BP is OK, but not perfect.

I took my BP at home last night and got the lowest reading I have ever had. I'm sure it's no coincidence.

One of the reasons I am doing 5:2 is to reduce my BP and my cholesterol. I won't know about the cholesterol levels until the next time I get my bloods done, but I am feeling very positive that this WOE is having an effect.

livelablove · 24/07/2014 10:35

That's great drama I am sure it is the 5:2 that is helping as well as any weightloss you have had.

livelablove · 24/07/2014 10:51

nfd today ate a big breakfast and still feel hungry. Will try to skip lunch or have a very small lunch and not too much snacking, eat usual dinner and no snacking in the evening. Don't know if I will manage I am bad about snacking.
I was worried about dd being a pain and setting me off eating or tempting me with her snacks, but funnily she has gone to play with a friend and I am now feeling like eating, as on my own at home and it is a bit quiet. Oh well I always want to eat!

LosBreakingBad · 24/07/2014 14:59

Second FD for me today. I learnt my lesson on Tuesday and have several cups of tea and loads of water. I am now drinking quite a salty cup a soup. I feel fine. No headache so far.

livelablove · 24/07/2014 15:09

That's great losbb you can do it!

Bollard · 24/07/2014 15:56

Another 1lb off but blimey it took its time! My BMI is 24.1 now Grin

livelablove · 24/07/2014 16:08

Yay bollard 24.1 is a good bmi! Do you have a target?

MazzleDazzle · 24/07/2014 16:57

Well done Drama, a fantastic health boost thanks to 5:2 and to Bollard as well, what a cracking BMI! Well done.

Keep at it losb you're almost there! Gla this FD is going well for you.

I had another day out with the kids today, a boat trip in fact. However, armed with my raw veg and low fat houmous I did not succumb to temptation! Which is a bloody good job as I'm off to my friend's for a girly dinner, but since I've saved plenty cals for it I can enjoy it guilt free!

Bollard · 24/07/2014 17:11

Mazzle - you're on a roll!
Livelab - I'd like my BMI to be about 21/22. I'm still quite matronly and I'd like my waist measurement to be well within the healthy parameters, so well under 80cm. It's over 80 at the moment.

BigChocFrenzy · 24/07/2014 17:32

That's not a little NSV, Drama that's a great big one !
Great news. Health is THE most important thing on this WOL
Flowers
There are quite a few science papers reporting that IF improves asthma for humans and blood pressure / cardiovasuclar risks in animal tests
There is debate as to whether it is the cell repair / hormesis due to fasting, or if it's just because of weight loss.

Folk on these threads have anecdotally reported improvements in conditions like IBS.

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 24/07/2014 17:40

Well done on the SV, Bollard
Weight loss is usually very slow for folk in the healthy BMI range.
Betsy said she lost her last 7lb at about 1lb per month. Absolutely fine.

Tips to Reduce Waist
If fat tends to accumulate here then:
. reduce added sugar, junk carbs and alcohol
. do intense HIIT exercise 3 x week, e.g. Tabata, sprint intervals, spin, circuit training, TaeBo, TaeKwondo

Tips to reduce Body Flab
. EXERCISE, especially HIIT and strength training

DramaAlpaca · 24/07/2014 23:25

Yes, I'm pleased Smile. I think I am losing weight, although it's still only noticeable to me. I am sticking to my resolve not to weigh myself for a month, but I know my clothes are looser and I can feel my cheekbones again. I am being very 'good' on FDs, I am being generally more mindful about what I eat on NFDs, but I do find weekends a struggle.

I'm also getting more exercise. I have cycled to work & back twice this week. It's only a mile or so each way, but very hilly.

It's great to hear how everyone else is doing, and the support on this thread is fantastic.

lagoon · 25/07/2014 10:57

Ahh well that's the fast over!!! Went pretty well actually one of my easiest ever.... Wasn't nice watching OH scoff a massive pile of rice with his prawns though, while I just had the prawns!

NFD today yay.

meadowquark · 25/07/2014 11:41

Morning all. I only dip in in this thread once in a while, but still doing 5:2. Today is my 2nd FD of the week (must be unpopular day to fast). live I have not weighed myself for 3 weeks - the day is tomorrow! I don't feel like I have lost anything, but it was hectic in recent days. I just hope there is no gain.

BetsyBell · 25/07/2014 11:43

Mega health NSV Drama, brilliant. Weight loss is a side effect - the one you can see/measure at home but the true purpose of this WOE is to improve how our bodies function.

Lagoon Excellent :) - next time have a big pile of leafy greenery dressed in lime juice, grated ginger and soy sauce with your prawns and watch your DH envy your delicious plateful!

Getting your BMI down is a real boost - well done Bollard

Yes, for some of us it is slow getting the last pounds to shift! 8lbs over a year for me Grin. I am by no means a skinny minny but my stomach is flat and I have muscles in the right places and my shoulders now look broader than my hips. Just trying to address various wobbly bits (arse, thighs) by improving my fat to muscle ratio, but the running, martial arts and press ups are improving this endomorph gradually! The great thing is that muscles are hungry so I get to eat more to feed them Grin

It's a quiet thread in the summer isn't it? I've got a new thread all lined up ready to go but it's going to take a while!

BetsyBell · 25/07/2014 11:46

Hello :)

Kids are watching Stampy, I'm tired after an early morning run = MN time!

BetsyBell · 25/07/2014 12:54

I've been conscious that I let my kids snack and take in really quite a lot of sugar, despite my own stance on such things.

I explained to the kids yesterday that just because it's summer holidays it doesn't mean we're going to eat crap snacks everyday, we're going to aim to eat more healthily". We already have a sweeties on Friday rule and sometimes we have crisps at the weekend so we all agreed to carry on with that. As we were walking back from our outing via a shop the next question from DS2 was "can I have some crisps?" Grin ("no, see previous conversation")

In previous summers I guess I've had to bribe them to come out shopping with me but they are perfectly old enough not to need that these days so I'm cutting off their expectations!

Anyway, DS1 wasn't sure what he wanted for lunch so I suggested some leftover brown rice with salad, lots of olive oil dressing and salami. He was delighted by that. I've even managed to wean my only-wants-white-bread-with-cheese onto more nutritious Vogel, with cheese but extra cucumber was requested. YAY.

DramaAlpaca · 25/07/2014 14:02

Hi meadow, it's my 2nd FD of the week too, so you're not alone Smile

I think inspired by my efforts to be more healthy, my two older boys (aged 19 & 20) have started exercising more and have instructed me not to buy crisps, chocolate or snacks. DS1 is doing a lot of cycling, and DS2 is doing running and a few weights on alternate days. It just needs to rub off on their chocoholic 16 year old brother now, but I'm not holding my breath! They are lucky in that they are all thin as whips, but they have finally decided that a healthy diet & exercise is important if they want to stay that way. DH has just gone out & bought himself a bike, having been borrowing mine for a while.

meadowquark · 25/07/2014 15:53

Hello Betsy and Drama. Good to know that I am not alone in FD today. More so that all of us have lots of boys in between us. I also have two of these species :) But I have sent my DS1 to stay with my family, and DS2 feels lonely and bored so I admit guilty of feeding him lots of icecream.

Betsy I am proud to say that I have started going to karate, have been there 4 times already and really enjoying so far! This is thanks to 5:2 as without 5:2 I would not have had the courage.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/07/2014 17:11

Hello all!
Apologies for going AWOL a few weeks ago - I was starting a new project and my boss was going away for 3 weeks, so I needed to get my head down and keep it down - MN can be addictive and sometimes I need to go cold turkey.

Anyway - can't remember exactly when I dropped out of circulation, but I've done my intermediate non-planing windsurfing course (must have been a while back, it was cold!), a bit of that and sailing subsequent weekends, lots of work, lots of pottering in the garden, reasonably consistent exercising and FDs every Mon and Thur. Smile A neighbour commented I was looking fit and slim this morning, and then I went and bought a second new pair of jeans (M&S per una still but now I can do straight leg not bootcut hooray!) - I think I'm passing the 'does my bum look big in this test' !!! Grin (still don't like the look of my thighs unclad, but then who does).

I haven't even attempted to catch up on the threads, hope everyone is well.

BetsyBell · 25/07/2014 18:17

errol Dragon - they brought your emoticon back to welcome your return! Wink Windsurfing sounds FUN. Awesome jeans nsv :)

Swimming shorts (women's trunks) are a revelation to me - makes life so much easier in the pool - no more hoiking the backs of cozzie down from the hungry bum syndrome and no more bothering with the bikini line just to take the kids swimming AND they have useful pockets. Why have I only just discovered them? Probably because I don't normally take the kids swimming... Grin

Loving the ages of my kids - we get to have really nice days with virtually no tantrums because one of them is suddenly tired/hungry/bored.
