Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 45: Getting keen on quinoa, learning to love the lettuce and varying the veg - help and advice on improving our health and eating habits with 5:2 fasting.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together the original OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BREASTFEEDERS: Start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: Is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: If pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: If you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).

Congratulations Boleh! A proposal on holiday in Sri Lanka! He did well there :)

Well done Sunshine. How long has that taken you?

Fast day for me today. I'm meeting friends today at 2 for a coffee so I'll have a skinny cappuccino but I'm not planning on eating till this evening. I'm also going to the gym later too.

MollyBdenum · 11/06/2014 09:09

Congratulations boleh!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 11/06/2014 12:19

Congratulations Boleh! :)

NFD here, going well. Just about to walk to pick DS2 up from preschool.

almostthereagain · 11/06/2014 12:24

Congrats boleh such a lovely time pre weddingSmile
nims had a sneaky weigh this am as my new shorts are already loose on me & now 2lbs under, although not my official weigh day. How did yours go? Managed a quick workout courtesy of bc pre school run / giant cookfestGrin

BigChocFrenzy · 11/06/2014 12:40

Contratulations, Boleh That's a very romantic setting
Flowers
Well done on your SV, Sunshine You’re feeling good and exercising too, so very good start

Studies show 25% TDEE is the optimal FD intake to retain muscle while losing weight^
It is also more sustainable longterm

So if you want to do an LOF I recommend eating the full calorie allowance like this:

Either
. an FD day with the 500/600 cals as thin liquids (I have low carb shakes sometimes, like in a Michelle Harvie study)
Or
. liquids totalling < 50 cals for 24 hours since the previous supper, then eating a 500/600 cal supper

meadowquark · 11/06/2014 13:38

Hi all and sorry for abandoning MN yesterday. Lots of work to do at work and at home.

Congrats Boleh excellent news, and well done Sunshine

My NSV is that DH said yesterday "you seem to have lost a bit of weight" (nevermind it is 2lbs only). And, my shoes today are falling of the feet - god knows why but must be a positive thing!

BigChocFrenzy · 11/06/2014 14:04

Meadow Sounds like you are losing fat and improving your shape (if even your DH has noticed !)
Scales do not always show fat loss, if you are improving your body composition

aquavit · 11/06/2014 14:48

ah so that is what LOF is! It is also what I am inadvertently doing right now as I am surviving today's FD on herbal tea and water until supper.

this weather makes it easier, doesn't it?

Bollard · 11/06/2014 17:00

Congratulations Boleh!
FD here and I'm feeling wobbly and cranky. AF is overdue which doesn't help, and I'm convinced that when I weigh myself tomorrow I won't be pleased and will give up.
Hope other FDs are going better and Bigchoc glad your consecutive fasts with sweaty blokes was good Grin

ThePowerOfMe · 11/06/2014 17:12

Bollard Stay strong. FD here today too. I was also feeling a bit wobbly so I had a banana.
I'm off to a spinning class in an hr then I'll have a 300cal meal after that. I had a delicious peach iced tea in Costa today but that was about 90 cals according to mfp. So worth it though.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/06/2014 17:26

Bollard - if the scales are bad tomorrow, it'll probably be AF related, you know that so we won't take that as an excuse for quitting.

Hang in there - have something nice to drink.

SunshineofRay · 11/06/2014 17:36

Conragts boleh that's lovely news Thanks

Thank you everyone, I really feel like this is a WOE that can work for me, I don't feel like I'm depriving myself and if anything I'm craving food less, I've made a concious effort to cut out snaking although I did have a packet of walkers baked crisps today
Last week was my first week of fasting and I did 3 days over the week, however the 6 of the 8lbs were what I had put on over the last month from eating junk, so although I'm glad to have lost so quickly I know the next 9lbs won't go as quickly, but I'm exercising and feeling a lot better already

Bollard · 11/06/2014 17:41

Well done Sunshine.
Thanks guys Grin

JessieEssex · 11/06/2014 18:32

I'm on my first 5:2 week and getting to the end of the 2nd FD. I'm truly surprised by how easy it's been and how good I feel already!

Don't know if this has been discovered already but I had this for lunch www.tesco.com/groceries/product/details/?id=279768770
And it was GORGEOUS - 190 cals.

JessieEssex · 11/06/2014 18:33

Sorry www.tesco.com/groceries/product/details/?id=279768770

darlings · 11/06/2014 19:53

Bollard same pinch! Wobbly day. Bad migraine this morning. FD And already 700 cal down Hmm
Power, inspired I might try to burn 200 cal.
I'm dreading the scales tomorrow.

Bollard · 11/06/2014 20:44

Jessie - that looks gorgeous. I made an egg thing from the 5:2 recipe book. Tomatoes, red pepper, onion, spices, all reduced then poach an egg in it. V nice, and might have it for breakfast as it made 2 servings. Not so much wobbly now but tired and grumpy.
It does help having other people who understand.

Darlings (great name!), sorry you're struggling with your FD too. I'm going to bed soon, I think. I think my malaise may be a combo of FD, pmt and Breaking Bad withdrawal Grin. I've not long finished it.

Helliecopter · 11/06/2014 20:49

Congratulations boleh

Grim news from Hellie Towers today. Not only has AF arrived with a vengeance, I've caught D&V bug from DD1. Felt utterly sh*tty all day (trying to entertain DD2) - you know the drill. Hot but freezing and shivery, stomach pains, no appetite etc., but at least the bug waited until the kids were in bed before making me spew most heartily. Sorry TMI!!

So today was supposed to be a FD anyway but I'm not even able to keep water down. Any tips on rehydration and re-feeding when I feel better. I'm very rarely sick and when I am I'm a bloody misery with it (as I'm sure you can tell, sorry!).

dizhin79 · 11/06/2014 20:59

hey y'all been offline for a wee while, long story involving broken phone! have maintained weight loss through a feeding frenzy week with the little one. Grin back on actual fasting and normal eating again. now to catch up on all the threadsGrin

MollyBdenum · 11/06/2014 21:03

I've just this minute been watching the start of season 4 of Breaking Bad. I want to stick my hand into the TV screen, pull Jesse out, train him as a tattoo artist, give him a false identity and move him to New Zealand.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/06/2014 21:06

Hellie - oh, that is grim. Don't even try to eat till you start to feel better - just lots of fluids. A little bit of salt and sugar in water is the basic rehydration fluid, or good old lucozade. Then something like breadsticks.

Bollard · 11/06/2014 21:23

Nellie - how miserable for you. Hope it's over quickly.
Molly Grin

ThePowerOfMe · 11/06/2014 21:32

hellie how awful for you. Poor you. Bad enough to have bug but to have a fat same time! I really feel for you. Hope you recover quickly.

I'm on season 3 of breaking bad. Love it.

ThePowerOfMe · 11/06/2014 21:36

Lol I meant to say af not fat!

BigChocFrenzy · 11/06/2014 21:40

Poor Hellie Do take care of yourself. I hope you all recover very soon.

Important about stomach bugs:
NO FD for at least 1 full week after all symptoms have gone
Just eat healthily to TDEE, no junk or alcohol
If you fast too soon, your tum may really rebel.
