Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 45: Getting keen on quinoa, learning to love the lettuce and varying the veg - help and advice on improving our health and eating habits with 5:2 fasting.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together the original OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BREASTFEEDERS: Start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: Is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: If pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: If you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).

10lb in 5 weeks is excellent, Deal. Sounds like you're one of those speedy merchants. How much have you got to go ?
The last few lb may crawl off very slowly though.

Well done today, Mazzle, darlings
Good ice cream NSV, Molly
Great to hear your running has gone so well, Blue

Meadow Karate should be a lot of fun.
btw: what Betsy didn't mention about her TaeKwanDo is that she bopped her DH on the nose accidentally she claims but I'm sure he's very respectful now.

I'm on my 2nd successive 650 FD a la Michelle Harvie and I feel fine
I've just finished a very strenuous outdoor Xfit class
- that is only for those who enjoy grappling with half-naked sweaty, muscular young men (I've only given up Choc Frenzies, NOT all my vices)
Grin

MazzleDazzle · 10/06/2014 19:58

LOL at Satan's whizz! That's cheered me right up. Grin

MollyBdenum · 10/06/2014 20:01

Half-naked, sweaty muscular young men, you say? But they make you do burpees, and double unders. I don't even know what a double under is, but they sound painful.

NeverEndingLaundry · 10/06/2014 20:17

Too knackered to do more than say hi.

Had a lovely NFD culminating in rather a lot of crappy food and now some wine, but I'm unrepentant as I'm going for 4:3 this week and........

I have finally done some sodding exercise. I did a million-mile walk with my best friend dog, involving two herds of much-too-curious cows, an out of date map, plenty of sleeping-beauty level overgrown paths and invisible styles.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/06/2014 20:43

Well done on the exercise, Laundry You'll have a very fit dog too, proudly showing off its slim figure to the other mutts

Chopsypie · 10/06/2014 21:39

Looks likes everyone is doing well. I'm at the end of another successful FD. Still full from tea time after an enormous prawn salad.
SIL and I are going to a beginners running class tomorrow, it's the first of a 12 week course that builds up to a 3 mile run. I'm not sure if I'm looking forward to it but I'm taking my advice from this thread and getting off my arse to get a new one!

vvviola · 10/06/2014 21:50

I may have to abandon my FD. Power is gone from much of the area after last night's storm. School is still open (quote from teacher: we've no heat and no power, but we're still going to open, it'll be fine) but if there is no power at the crèche within the next hour, then I'll have to come back and get DD2.

So I'm currently sitting in a car park trying to decide whether I should go to work, and literally have to turn around and come back again when I get there, or sit it out in a cafe because it's getting cold sitting in the car until 9:30 and just go into work late if the power comes on.

If the cafe plan wins (which is looking likely) I don't think a FD will be feasible. Or if DD2 is home with me for the day, I've learnt that being at home all day within reach of the cupboards is a recipe for a failed FD.

VanGogh · 10/06/2014 21:58

Evening all!!!

Good work and well done to all those on a FD today!

ErrolTheDragon · 10/06/2014 22:05

vvv - blimey, what a pita. But 5:2 is flexible - if you can't do an FD today it's not a disaster.

vvviola · 10/06/2014 22:07

I think that is why is has been working for me, Errol. On failed/deferred FDs I can tell myself I'm still on track by slotting in an extra FD, and I don't revert to "sod it, I'll just eat all the chocolate because I'm crap at sticking to a diet" which used to frequently sometimes happen before.

Bollard · 10/06/2014 22:21

Managed to limit myself to 4 smoked anchovies so still within TDEE Grin

nims1981 · 10/06/2014 22:37

just checking in, ok FD for me today about 550. felt a bit week and pathetic but was quite under TDEE yesterday and I've done quite a lot of exercise. had to shovel a load or rubble for our building work and was really flagging. looking forward to brekkie although I'm hoping I'll skip when the time actually comes Grin night all

ErrolTheDragon · 10/06/2014 22:37

well done, bollard. I've never had a smoked anchovy, that sounds likes max flavour per calorie so good choice!

ThePowerOfMe · 11/06/2014 00:17

Bleurgh to anchovies. I don't like them at all but each to their own.

I was very pleased to have stayed below my TDEE today but I went for a long walk to the park with the kids on bikes and in a buggy this evening and when I got back I was feeling a bit shakey so I ended up having 2 slices of marmite on buttered toast and a bit of pasta.
Oh well. Fast day tomorrow.

nims1981 · 11/06/2014 05:55

morning! early wake up after FD for me! not so hungry now though Smile
BCF what's is lof? is it 2 consecutive FDs? and will I be ready? today would be a good day for my second fast of the week as I'm working all day but don't want to over do it!
I'm weighing in this morning after a pretty good week, fingers crossed I see some results. can't see any in clothes but I'm badly constipated and well overdue on my period so a bit bloated!
Looks like everyone is doing well, couch to 5k is a great way to start moving!
almost shattered any joy on that last 7lb?

Boleh · 11/06/2014 06:01

nims LOF is liquid

Boleh · 11/06/2014 06:11

nims LOF is liquid only fast - I think it has a calorie limit (maybe 25 or 50 cals) pretty sure you aren't allowed to guzzle hot chocolates!

I've returned from an awesome 12 days holiday! I can highly reccomend Sri Lanka for anyone who is interested. The most exciting news by far is that DP proposed! [happy] so hopefully around this time next year he will be DH!!

The much less exciting news is that I have gained 4.5 lbs. it's not a great shock, I've eaten whatever I liked with buffet breakfasts every day and not done a vast amount of exercise. Still rather depressing that it goes on roughly twice as fast as it comes off for me - so back on it with a FD tomorrow and a healthy shopping list to keep to TDEE the rest of the time. I'm not going to try to cram in extra fast days unless I really can't shift it, just go back to my regular pattern. I think it will make my end July target a stretch though 12.5 lb in 8 weeks, I've been on pretty much 1lb a week average for the last couple of months.

I hope everyone else's weight is going in the right direction - I have no chance if catching up 2 weeks of this thread!!

nims1981 · 11/06/2014 06:25

bollard sounds like a great plan. I was just reading the other day that if you change too much at once your much less likely to fail, whereas one thing at a time you can make it a habbit then work on the next. good luckSmile

EmpireBiscuit · 11/06/2014 07:25

Congrats boleh and soon to be mr boleh!

SunshineofRay · 11/06/2014 07:41

Hi everyone!
Havnt been on for a few days but have been fasting, on NFDs it's been a bit of a mix up, some days I've had TDEE others I've had around 1400 but the main thing is I've felt full and satisfied
And since I started I've lost 8lbs !!! I've also been exercising and drinkng
Lots of water so I know that's helped
Will be back later to read through and catch up with everyone

ErrolTheDragon · 11/06/2014 07:56

Congratulations boleh!

Well done sunshine, that's great!

LOF can mean different things to different people - the strict form is clear liquids only

TobyLerone · 11/06/2014 07:58

Congrats, boleh! How exciting :o

SquirrelledAway · 11/06/2014 08:34

Looks like my exercise plan of long walks in the sunshine this week has been scuppered. DS2 has chicken pox, and is now covered with spots and miserable. At least he'll be over it in time for our holiday, less than 4 weeks to go now Grin

SquirrelledAway · 11/06/2014 08:39

Oooooh congrats Boleh. My dad was in Sri Lanka at the end of the war, he said it was lovely and has always wanted to go back.

Well done Sunshine - that's over half a stone!
