The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together the original OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BREASTFEEDERS: Start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: Is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: If pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: If you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).

I had a bad NFD today, I was over my TDEE before tea time! went to a hiit class hoping to suppress appetite but that didn't seem to workSad I've only eaten healthy stuff but way too much fruit and a whole pack of dried figsBlush

nims1981 · 11/06/2014 22:46

sorry, poor you hellie not bollard! I get in such a muddle.
we'll done almost 2lb down is great news! I chickened out of weighing myself as I'm still really constipated (been days) and due on so I thought I'd wait till things have moved on Grin

SquirrelledAway · 11/06/2014 22:54

hellie rehydration sachets (Dioralyte or similar) will help - if your salts are all out of whack you'll feel awful.

DontBeBlueBeARainbow · 12/06/2014 01:39

Morning all, postponed yesterday's FD as MiL brought round a LOAD of homemade dumplings. Started today with a mug of soy milk and got my soup and chickpea tagine all ready to go Smile DH and I had a wonderful training session on the track yesterday, really felt i earned my dinner Grin

Chopsy beginner's running course sounds great. In my two years of running I've not joined a running club but would love to in the future when i cone back to the UK.

Boleh Congratulations to you! Happy planning.

Meadow well done on your NSVs.

Hellie sorry you're not well Thanks

Weigh-in tomorrow morning, fx! Good luck to other Thurs FDers, let's do this!

Boleh · 12/06/2014 04:06

Thank you so much for all the congratulations and virtual flowers folks Smile he really did do rather well - especially as he really isn't usually the most romantic! I just have to stop grinning like an idiot and wedding planning and do some work. We need to start with where to have the wedding - UK or where we live! I put a thread on AIBU and it seems that probably I am - hmm...

Good to see all the new folks who have arrived in the last few weeks and are off to flying starts along with the regulars still making progress. hellie sorry to hear you are ill, that sounds grim - follow BigChoc's advice, she's the lady who knows all! Smile

I'm on the 1st FD back and doing OK so far, one cup of tea down - no idea what I'll drag out of the freezer for lunch and dinner but there should be plenty of FD compatible stuff as I batch cook. Hopefully get back to my cooking and veg soup making at the weekend.

Good luck all for successful FDs and healthy NFDs Smile

nims1981 · 12/06/2014 05:45

I ended up eating some tea, mackerel salad with cous cous and I was 650 cals over TDEE yesterday Sad very disappointing as not one biscuit or cake passed my lips. starting the day with nuts and seeds was fatal but I felt starved!
still back to under (just) TDEE again today and squeeze another Fd in tomorrow!
good luck to all FDers today, anyone else doing Friday?

Helliecopter · 12/06/2014 06:55

Sorry to confuse with AF! So used to using it on the birth boards Blush

Thanks all for the get well wishes. Didn't get a good night's sleep but somehow DD1 (who's in the cot next to me) was an absolute angel and slept right through so that's brill.

And thanks for the advice (nods to wise bigchoc) I'll avoid fasting and just eat well as soon I feel like eating again.

Sunny day today, hopefully the kids can just run riot in the garden!

MollyBdenum · 12/06/2014 07:11

nims, I'll be doing a Friday fast day this week. I went a bit over TDEE yesterday, but I was a bit under on all my other NFDs so I think it all evens out. And, I got AF yesterday (GMWAMA!) which normally causes me to binge eat uncontrollably for several days, so actually, deciding I wanted a snack, deciding how much I wanted, putting it on a plate, putting the rest back in the fridge and eating the food on the plate and really enjoying it without guilt is a pretty big NSV in terms of getting back a healthy relationship with food.

aquavit · 12/06/2014 07:16

feel well soon hellie, hope that the sunshine gives you a peaceful recovery day

NFD for me, am planning to hit the gym before breaking yesterday's fast so it's still water water water here

aquavit · 12/06/2014 07:17

molly that is a very good kind of victory, well done you

positively9something · 12/06/2014 07:30

Morning, well I'm not doing very well this week Hmm Monday I was meant to be fasting, I didn't eat all day until I came home and still managed to eat over 1200 cals ConfusedConfused

Yesterday I went on a mad binge eat, I eat loads of biscuits and had about half a packet of sugary chocolate cereal! I'm just not doing very well Hmm

I feel that I am a carboholic and I am considering doing low carb and 5:2 together. Does anyone else do this?

I am worried that the carbs just make me eat excessively and I won't stop Hmm

brockhurst44 · 12/06/2014 07:32

morning FD for me!!! I have another?!? Question.
What is the difference between weighing after a fast day and weighing after a normal day?
I weigh the morning after my second fast and I just wondered what would be the difference if I weighed after a normal day.....
Good luck to all FDs

vvviola · 12/06/2014 07:54

positively I'm a bit of a carb fiend too, and I find on NFDs I can completely lose the run of myself if I start into the carbs too early. I'm also trying to half the number of carbs I take with my main meal too - I'd got to the stage of eating the same amount as DH, which is way too much for me.

On FD's I have to almost completely avoid carbs (although I do have rice crackers around 3pm to stop me getting too cranky with the kids).

This week hasn't been great for me as AF arrived and I turn into even more of a carb monster then.

vvviola · 12/06/2014 07:56

nims I'm going to try a Friday FD - but mine will be nearly over here in NZ by the time you guys are starting Grin

MelanieCheeks · 12/06/2014 08:09

Brockhurst your weight will go up and down all the time. It's likely that after a fast day it'll be at its lowest point, since there's less undigested food, water retention etc going on. But that's not a guaranteed fact. But in theory, that'll give you the most consistent point at which to measure.

ThePowerOfMe · 12/06/2014 08:14

Positively have you tried just stopping sugar and wheat rather than all carbs?

I binge on carbs too but I find I'm more likely to binge on toast or sugary carbs. I do find the more you eat, the more you want to eat. Once you cut them out, you won't want them so much (until the next time you give in and think I'll just have a couple!)

NFD today. So I'm just eating my 3 meals without snacking.

Bollard · 12/06/2014 08:30

Another lb down, that's 5lbs in 3 weeks! I agree about a huge nsv being not going carb crazy.

ThePowerOfMe · 12/06/2014 09:30

I had a sneaky weigh in this morning (after a fast day) and I'm down 4lbs since the weekend!

The more experienced will probably come in soon and give a better answer - but my impression was that "eating mindfully" is the same as within TDEE for people who already eat sensibly and don't go on crazed carb binges. For the rest of us me, we need to re-learn how to eat sensibly and mindfully - and that means learning to (mostly) stay within TDEE, especially if we are hoping for weight loss in addition to the other health benefits.
