The continuing thread for those of us following 5:2 or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on BBC Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is similar, except you fast on 3 days in the week.
ADF (Alternate-day fasting) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links:
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMI already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women exercisers who reported health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, severe anxiety, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

5:2 to indulge in cheese and wine sounds like an absolute winner to me Talkin!

Just need to get through day 1 and back to my "pre loved up, living with a man" figure first!

Thank you for all the support and ideas. I am so so grateful! I allowed myself to succumb to a diet coke and it killed my hunger until just now when I had a 72g carrot which didn't need the humus or pesto or other dips I usually indulge in. It was just a delicious 30cal of cold juicy carrot!

And water.

I am so motivated by all of your "lost a lb, lost 3lb" mentions. Massive well done to all of you!

Is 2lb a reasonable weekly target for an overweight person on 5:2?

SpottyTeacakes · 15/05/2014 16:58

I haven't been able to keep up today! The dc had jabs earlier too ds didn't flinch but dd got into a right state Sad ds won't let me put him down now though so dinner is emergency fish cakes and mash and veg Blush I can't manage dinner plus clingy toddler

BetsyBell · 15/05/2014 17:10

Right, I've lost track of this thread but hello to new starters and fellow Thursday fasters!

I'm having mussels for dinner, accidentally bought a loaf of olive bread to mop up sauce but have now had a pint of water and am now fantasising about dry frying some thinly sliced cabbage and cauli with some ginger, garlic and drizzling with soy, so I shall make heaps of that and mostly avoid the bread!

Just goes to show how much hunger pangs are actually thirst signals - was craving the carbs as a response to thirst.

However, I really mustn't think about cheese caves

Pastperfect · 15/05/2014 17:18

Oh god cheese....my number one weakness. If I could live on nothing else it would be crusty French bread and ripe Brie mmmmmmm

Instead I am pan frying scallops which I'm having with a side of avocado, mango and chilli salsa and a glass of very dry white wine

Not bad I suppose

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 15/05/2014 17:21

FD here - just started getting the dinner ready so nearly done. LOF since 9pm last night.

Dinner is a haddock fish cake with a cheese and leek middle (thank you sainsbury's!), and a load of green veg. Asparagus and a smear of butter on the side again :)

Pastperfect I don't drink during the week now unless it is a special occasion. It just kicks off the munchies - maybe not at the time, but if not then the next morning.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday I fill my boots! Wine bill has come down significantly since starting this WOL Grin

VanGogh I allow myself 50 calories of milk, so 100mls of semi-skimmed over the course of a fast day. This equates to around 3 cups of tea depending on how milky you like it - I have trained my palette to like it with a smaller amount of milk :)
I know it seems really daunting at the moment, but actually once you get into this then you can eat a great deal of food for 500 calories once you get past the normal diet idea of having low calorie snacks all the time (special K bar, apple, satsuma etc). A lot of us low-carb on FDs, simply because it allows you maximum proper food.
Personally I wouldn't use sweetener. Apart from the issues with it in itself, there is some evidence to suggest that it actually triggers an insulin response from the body because of the sweet taste, so your body produces insulin and stores fat in the same way it would if you had a teaspoon of sugar in your tea.
Sorry for the big waffle - but essentially there is more to this than simple calories - we are altering body chemistry by doing this which is what gives the weightloss. I highly recommend reading the Mosely book - a lot will fall into place.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 15/05/2014 17:29

spotty hope you dc recover from the jabs soon. Fish cakes are a good standby in our house too. My mum is celiac and m&s do a good line in gluten free fish cakes so I always have a few in the freezer.

Feeling a lot better now, have drunk quite a bit of lucozade (sp) and managed to keep it down

tiggermummy70 · 15/05/2014 17:36

well today is looking like it will be a fd. I didn't get out for lunch just two cups of coffee. Whilst I sorted something at work.
I'm at 550cals. so I might have something if I feel the need but otherwise I'll try and keep it as it is. Boss is watching show tonight so don't want to be passing out on stage in front of him.

Shatteredmamma1 · 15/05/2014 18:42

Well done tigger! But yes don't faint!!

Where can you get this marigold bouillon I keep hearing about? Is it good? I need an alternative to miso soup which is frankly just grim and far too salty!!! Grin

Not2bObvious · 15/05/2014 18:48

PastPerfect I nearly burst out laughing when you asked do people not drink on 5:2, I think the absolute beauty if this woe is you can eat plenty of real food and have a glass or 3 of wine, only not on 2 days of the week. Not saying you can't eat real food on fd's of course. I travel a bit with work and I mainly skip breakfast, if I really need something a skinny cappuchino keeps me going, something salad'ey for lunch and then for dinner I stick to 1 course. I never stay anywhere swish enough for a mini bar so that solves the issueGrin
Had my first successful FD in ages today, just a little over. 600. Not before time, v bloated after my bingey week but my heads back on the zone. 16:8 tomorrow. Well done Thursday FD'ers !!

Helliecopter · 15/05/2014 19:03

Howdy. I'm losing track of where we're up to, but welcome newbies and hello other Thursday FD'ers.

I've felt like death warmed up most of today, but pretty much managed to stick to a decent FD. Despite a splitting headache that nothing has touched, I didn't eat until an apple at about 2pm. Dinner was a really nice frittata with chargrilled asparagus and salad. I've actually come in at around 350, so if I need it later I might have something for supper. Still not drinking enough water. Just don't seem to be able to neck it sufficiently, really struggle...and I love cold water! Weird really.

Need to perk myself up a bit and think positive again! I was a little lighter after my last FD on Tuesday even though I said I wouldn't weigh myself this week and I've had a few compliments on my weight loss, so it must be getting noticeable now, which is nice to know.

How's everyone else getting on?

almostthereagain · 15/05/2014 19:27

Good luck Tigger

msmoss · 15/05/2014 19:43

Definitely feels a bit easier today, amazing how quickly your mind can get the hang of it.

To those whose FD, don't worry sometimes life just gets in the way, small under the weather children are a test to far for many I think. There will always be other opportunities to fast.

Re thirst I ran today and last FD, I was just thinking earlier that my previous theory that I was always starving after a run was quite wrong, as really I'm just always pretty thirsty!!

SquirrelledAway · 15/05/2014 19:56

You can get Marigold bouillon in Asda, Sainsbos etc - it's with the gravy granules and the like.

I haven't given up alcohol (hic) but I have cut down on beer and swapped to lower alcohol wines like Riesling. I do seem to suffer more with hangovers lately though, but that might just be an age thing (I'm not as young as I like to think I am).

NSV for me today - DS1 actually commented that I was looking slim. He doesn't normally notice anything that isn't related to (a) food (b) Xbox or (c) girlfriend. And words rather than grunts was a novelty for him too.

HumphreyCobbler · 15/05/2014 20:03

Hello everyone. Logging in a successful FD. I did an enormous amount of cooking too, which didn't seem to be a problem. I am really looking forward to a slice of rhubarb and orange cake though, we are having people round for a meal tomorrow evening. I find I am eating really nice, healthy things on NFDs now as I spend time planning what I am going to cook on the FD.

I am also really pleased to report a nice NSV - I am feeling rather good about my body. I still have a way to go but I recognise this body again, it feels like mine Smile Also I have gone down a bra size, still a j cup but at least it is a 30 back!

SpottyTeacakes · 15/05/2014 20:05

I saw hips when I lied down and breathed in this morning Grin FD tomorrow actually looking forward to it

Not2bObvious · 15/05/2014 20:15

Lovely nsv's guys, smaller bra's, compliments from offspring, hips emerging - tis a good day in 5:2 land!

BetsyBell · 15/05/2014 20:17

Humphrey I would love your recipe for rhubarb and orange cake please. It sounds amazing and I'm hungry. Excellent NSV Grin

My dinner was nice. The best bit was definitely the cauli and cabbage stir fry, and if I'd had some cooked quinoa to hand I don't think I'd have bothered with the mussels or the olive bread.

Spotty rediscovering hip bones is a good feeling isn't it? I still appreciate mine, even though they reappeared over a year ago! I never want them to go away again :)

HumphreyCobbler · 15/05/2014 20:23

here it is BetsyBell

it is nice with pears too

Southeastdweller · 15/05/2014 20:33

Leon is great, I always direct friends from out of London when they come here to one of the branches for healthy food that doesn't cost the earth.

SpottyTeacakes · 15/05/2014 20:34

Yes Betsy Grin they're my favourite bones Wink I always have collar/ankle/wrist bones but those hip ones like to frequently retreat behind the pudge.

BetsyBell · 15/05/2014 20:34

MMMMMmmmmmmmmmMMMMMMMMmmmmm... Thanks humphrey Grin

Baloostika · 15/05/2014 20:37

Welcome to all newbies and congrats to all NSV holders.
Planned a FD today but I guess it's ruined, I just ate to fries chicken wings at a board meeting this evening. Will try again tomorrow.
Thursday fasters hope u were all able to wither the fasting storm.
Hope to nail a DD tomorrow with all Friday fasters.
Ciao

BigChocFrenzy · 15/05/2014 20:39

Congrats on your NSVs, Hellie, Squirrel. Unsolicited compliments are so motivating.
Smile
PastPerfect That loud thud was Talkinpeace fainting at the thought of 5:2 banning booze !

I think Wine and cheese are her 2 fav food groups and she is very successful on this WOE

She and I disagree about sweeteners. I don't claim they are great, but I'm as likely to give up my Coke Zero as she is to go teetotal, see picture

I couldn't get through my days with out a Diet Coke or two. I don't drink coffee or normal tea so it's my only caffeine, even though I feel a bit awful about the aspartame. But it could be worse...it's not like it's heroin or crystal meth even though I'm just as addicted
