The continuing thread for those of us following 5:2 or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on BBC Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is similar, except you fast on 3 days in the week.
ADF (Alternate-day fasting) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links:
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMI already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women exercisers who reported health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, severe anxiety, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Bimblepops can you go to the farm and take something FD compatible if the kids are going to eat there flask of veggie soup / apple or similar) then cook a nice family meal but one where you leave the carbs out from yours to also make it FD compatible?
I don't have children so sorry if I'm oversimplifying Blush but most of my FD meals are something I cook for myself and DP but where I might have the veggie chilli with a heap of veg (broccoli mops up sauce well) he gets rice and cheese on top.

VanGogh good luck, remember on this WOE you can have the cheese and wine tomorrow - it's not banned! Smile

I had a successful FD yesterday and a so far OK NFD today but am going to a friends for dinner and taking a crazy chocolate fudge cake I made for DPs birthday, fortunately for me the icing is really soft in the heat here which doesn't appeal at all! I have 1000 cals left, surely I can keep a single meal under that... Hmm

Leons is a small chain restaurant in London & they have a few others like blue water. they do "real" food.
we go there for breakfast with the kids every weekday. their selection is things like poached egg, porridge with optional fruits/granola/ Greek yogurt. artisan toast. salmon
they even do kids egg/soldiers / toast & banana.

kids meals - grilled chicken no batter/falafel/fish finger (its big bit) they are served with brown rice & mix peas & broccoli. g
they do "fries" but they are waffle cut and oven baked. you can ask for the fries instead of rice.

they do a wonderful gobi curry with cauli n sweet potato

the guy that founded Leons is working on the food programs for schools.

Many of us on these threads are rodents, who could live off cheese indefinitely. So, you can feel at home.

Also, our Tip lost a lot of weight and has maintained longterm, despite a great fondness for wine (and a low TDEE)

Well done on your NSV, bbc . Looser clothes means fat loss. Your exercises, especially HIIT and strength training, are improving your body composition and metabolism

nims It took several months to stop my Choc Frenzies, because they had become a habit after low carb. You might manage much more quickly noone can be as greedy as I was
I wasn't ashamed of Frenzies and I wasn't overweight, but I knew my diet was VERY unhealthy.
I used to post biweekly 6,000-cal orgies here, but these are lovely supportive threads, without judgey pants.

Post whenever you need help, or if you wake up under a mountain of choc wrappers.

Right I'm in!

Four months ago I was the heaviest if been aside pregnant and fed up....somehow just 16 weeks later I'm heavier than the day I was before by 4th child was born Shock

So a week ago I started a really low carb, low cal diet with the hope of kick starting me but I think this is more what I need. I travel a lot for work and so need to be able to plan for dinners out and hotel living.

If I could get to 8 stone 9lb I'd be happy but secretly I'd like to get to my pre baby weight of 8 stone 5lb I lost 4lb this week just gone but now need to lose a further 19lb but I'm only at home 9 days out of the next 28 which makes it seem insurmountable

almostthereagain · 15/05/2014 12:52

Happy, happy b'day cider & have a wonderful trip.
I had a good nfd yesterday with little appetite until late afternoon so managed on coffee until then, not sure what my cals total was though.
Woke up starving this am & am cooking all day incl. delicious smelling brownies. Unfortunately something looked very wrong when I got them out of the oven so I had to break off a piece to check they were ok (they're notAngry) & I ate the piece double Angry
Now I'm REALLY hungry & bad tempered as I have to make another batch of brownies grrr. Really want to succeed today as weigh in day tomorrow.
nim & shattered perhaps we should both try a mini fast tomorrow to make up?
I really, really want a giant wholemeal pitta stuffed w houmous & salad but then I won't have any more cals, ohh, ohh, wailsSad

Baloostika · 15/05/2014 13:39

Bigchocfrenzy oh I just love u Smile, lolzzz.
I agree with u on the stilleto deal.

Baloostika · 15/05/2014 13:40

HBD Cider and enjoy ur holiday.

VanGogh · 15/05/2014 13:43

Thank you everyone! My wobbly bits and I feel very welcome and supported to the shock absorber run level!

Ok. First fast day ever. I've drunk gallons of water (well, 1.5l so far) and that's it. I'm still thirsty however... I think.

I'm avoiding robinsons special r squash (my usual vice) and diet coke because I don't want to taste anything sweet in case it kicks off my very hungry feeling

I contemplated having an apple a few minutes ago but I was scared it would make me really hungry rather than just "hungry" and apples are like 70cal! With only 600 to "play" with it seemed a big risk to take or am I being crazy? I don't know!

Perhaps it's black coffee or herbal tea time?

Also. I have artificial sweetener in my tea or black coffee. Am I ok to continue. I'm learning the health problems attributed to it but I'm weaning myself off. I want to avoid tea because of the milk cal...

I think I'm hungry....

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 15/05/2014 14:03

howlong well done on your first fast, you either got really lucky or fasting suits you

dumpy ooh I love the island. I spent the first episode shouting at the TV - coconuts, go and pick some bloody coconuts

SquirrelledAway · 15/05/2014 14:07

vangogh I usually have a mug of Marigold veggie bouillon at lunchtime, very filling for only 12 calories.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 15/05/2014 14:09

I'm having a bit of an unplanned two day fast. Fasted Wed (1030 cals so slightly over my 1000 limit but not too horrendous). This morning I've come down with a vomiting bug.

This happened to me back in jan. Had a fast day, then woke up the next feeling crap and then the vomiting started.

Has anyone heard of fasting lowering your immune system? It's defiantly a bug as 6 month old ds has it too.

almost brownies sound lovely, best of luck with batch two

msmoss · 15/05/2014 14:10

Hello, 3rd FD and hanging on in there! Feeling quite positive about the whole process, particularly as the scales showed 2 lbs down this morning.

Have loads of work to do so can't chat long but well done to everyone!

bbcessex · 15/05/2014 14:17

congrats on the 2lb loss msmoss, that's good going..

tiggermummy.. like the sound of Leons, I will check out if there's one near me x

Whenshewasbad.. that sounds pretty rubbish, sorry to hear you're not well.. esp. as your littlie has it too. Hope it passes soon xxxx

BigChocFrenzy · 15/05/2014 14:20

Welcome PastPerfect Many of us find FDs easier when we're not at home away from the fridge calling out to us
Some advantages of 5:2 are that it doesn't exclude entire food groups, doesn't require special or expensive food and you can fit it into a busy social and business life.

VanGogh some folk eat fruit on FDs, but I keep it for NFDs, because it makes me hungry on an empty tum.
You could split your cals into a small lunch and small supper.
So, you could have some thick veg soup now, or fish / omelette and salad ......

Awww my little boy had his 1st vaccinations today, my planned day of dog walking, gardening, strimming....fasting has all gone out the window as I have a very upset little boy who's very unsettled, feeding a lot, trapping me on the sofa... next to the chocolate orange digestive biscuits Sad

BigChocFrenzy · 15/05/2014 14:30

WhenSheWasBad Sorry to hear you and your DC are poorly.

Fasting has proved in human trials to improve health markers.
It helps the body repair itself - unless you overdo fasting and / or exercise. If you are BFing, I recommend returning to 1000 cals once you recover.

Right now, don't force yourself to either fast or eat, just rest and drink loads of water. Hope you both feel better very soon.

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 15/05/2014 14:33

Tigger - I love Leon. I used to work round the corner from the Carnaby St branch and ate there all the time. Exactly my kind of food

Pastperfect · 15/05/2014 14:48

Thanks bigchoc I guess there are pros and cons: no fridge reduces temptation but a minibar and a three course dinner to pick through is a struggle as I have zero will power.

One question - has everyone given up alcohol? In the past I probably drank pretty much every night but I am going to allow myself on evening when I drink.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 15/05/2014 14:53

Thanks bbc very Envy of your power plate

missmoss well done on the loss (hee hee that rhythmed)

bigchoc I though it was probably bad luck. I spent all yesterday crawling around a soft play centre aka sickness central

Shatteredmamma1 · 15/05/2014 15:37

Soft play is the worst for bugs!!! Sad

Almost yes will fast tomorrow. Good day so far today but out for dinner later and I want a glass of something!! Wine
Alcohol makes me hungry though...

TalkinPeace · 15/05/2014 15:43

Wow, lots of new people ....
EXCELLENT
this is a thread we've not used in a while, but its the synthesis of loads of ideas from the first 18 months of many of us fasting
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/fasting_diet/1581821-Tips-and-links-for-those-practicing-Intermittent-Fasting-IF-5-2-or-Alternate-Day-Fasting-ADF?

and FWIW
I hit target weight before Christmas 2012
I still do 5:2 because it then means I can indulge in my two weaknesses : cheese and wine Grin

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 15/05/2014 15:55

Mmm cheese and wine.

My brother introduced me to a bizarre concept. Chocolate and Stilton (well any blue cheese). It actually works.

Thanks for the tips thread TIP

shattered yep soft play is disease ridden. Dd is very clingy so I end up in soft play playing with her and 5 other kids when I should be drinking tea and talking to my mates

msmoss · 15/05/2014 16:42

dizhin79 aw DS1 was just like that with his first jabs as well, he did get progressively better with them so much so that on his 3rd set I'd didn't actually get the day of sitting on the sofa that I'd planned and he was absolutely fine. Fingers crossed your DS is back to his usual self soon.

I don't drink that much but that's not really to do with 5:2 more to having 2 very small children!!
