Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 44: Too big for your britches - or your skinny jeans, bikini, special dress ? Slim those fatted calves and waste that waist with 5:2 / IF

The continuing thread for those of us following 5:2 or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on BBC Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is similar, except you fast on 3 days in the week.
ADF (Alternate-day fasting) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links:
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMI already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women exercisers who reported health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, severe anxiety, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Crickey you lot talk a lot!

Just popped in to say I'm popping out for a few weeks!

Birthday tomorrow so today is my last day as a 49 year old. And I'm not in frame of mind to fast or 'diet' in any way! Am having wine and am about to have strawberries and cream. Planning cake and dinner out tomorrow. Night out (big one) on Friday and then on Saturday I fly to Australia for 9 days. Am so excited. So so excited! Seeing friends I haven't seen for 13 years. There will be Los of champagne, chat, wine, chat, food, wine, chat etc etc etc.

I'll be back!

SpottyTeacakes · 14/05/2014 20:32

Enjoy. Have a fab time.

MillyMollyMandy78 · 14/05/2014 20:56

Just worked out my TDEE and it's 1675. So does that mean if i ate 1675 cals every non-fast day and had 2 fast days every week of approx 5-600 cals, I would definitely lose weight? I tried the 5:2 a while ago but didn't count calories at all, and found i ate 600 cals on fast days, but didn't lose weight at all, just maintained for a month. I am at least a stone overweight so definitely want to lose it and not just maintain, but not sure where i went wrong. On non-fast days, i ate healthily and was pretty controlled. It's not as though i went mad overeating or anything on those days. Any advice is much appreciated!

Not2bObvious · 14/05/2014 20:59

Checking in for first time this thread. Have had a really bad week, starting last Thursday. I have to claw back, I will, I have to! I'll have a good read, catch up on all news and newbies no doubt Wink Have a great holiday Cider and vv happy birthday, raising a pretend glassWine

Southeastdweller · 14/05/2014 21:11

Belated thanks for the new thread.

Nothing else to add from me at the moment as I'm in a zombie state from overtime at work, sorry Blush.

TalkinPeace · 14/05/2014 21:29

MillyMolly
the weekly pattern we worked out a while back was ....
Monday = 500 calories
Tuesday = TDEE less 10%
Wednesday = TDEE less 10%
Thursday = 500 calories
Friday = TDEE
Saturday = whatever you like
Sunday = TDEE less 10%

that seems to result in a pretty steady pound and a half a week Smile

crimsonwitch · 14/05/2014 22:04

Thanks Bigchoc I will not go zero cal tomorrow, I will stick to 500 every other day and see how it goes. I am at the docs in a couple of days so I will ask him about adjusting my pain meds and hopefully I might be able to get out and walk some more.
First FD tomorrow wish me luck Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 14/05/2014 22:16

Happy 50th tomorrow, Cider Sounds like you've planned a lovely celebration hols. I can welcome you to the 50+ club on your return

Crimson Enjoy your 1st FD tomorrow
Smile
The key to FDs is planning and calorie counting your FD meals the day before.

MillieMollieMandy If you are overweight, then you became so by eating above your TDEE - even if you eat healthily.
So eating "normally" on NFDs is over-eating.

With your 1675 TDEE and 5-600 FDs, your FDs gave a weekly deficit of 2200, potentially 0.7 lb per week.
If you ate 400+ cals above TDEE on your NFDs (which may be your "normal " eating) that would cancel the deficit, so no weight loss.

If you follow Tip's classic plan, then count all food and drink for a full week on mfp, so you know how much food that means.
You can lose weight once you correct your NFD intake.
Smile

nims1981 · 14/05/2014 23:03

almost and shattered I'm still in for 7lb off, I've had a really bad NFD today though, so disappointed with myself. fasting again tomorrow.
nc I know exactly how you feel after school pick up, I find it so hard not to be short tempered with my boys, I must say this week was better than last do hopefully it will get easier still.
I need to get in a bikini in about 10 day's and I'll be in France [cheese, bread and wine ] so goodness knows how I'll cope out there!

MillyMollyMandy78 · 14/05/2014 23:14

Thank you for that plan Talkin, very helpful. And BigChoc, you are right about my 'normal' obviously being too much, which is why i stayed the same before. I agree that I should monitor what I am actually eating at least for the first week, though don't plan on weighing myself for a month, so will prob monitor my intake for the whole month and tweak after that, if necessary.

vvviola · 14/05/2014 23:16

Thanks for all the office food avoidance tips. There is cake again today (!). I'm on a NFD, but may avoid it anyway unless it looks absolutely irresistible.

Yesterday's FD wasn't brilliant, I probably ended up at about 800 cals total thanks to over estimating my portion size at dinner and having a bit of popcorn for my snack. But I did manage 16:8, and that was easy enough, so I'm optimistic for Friday's FD.

I think my initial plan is to schedule FDs for Monday and Wednesday, and if either of those go pear shaped for whatever reason, I'll add in an extra one on Friday.

TiP I'm afraid my tea is non-negotiable. Grin I do drink herbal tea during the day, but at 9pm it has to be proper Irish tea in a big mug. My sleep patterns are more likely to be affected by my non-sleeping 2yo.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/05/2014 23:36

Well done on your 1st FD, Howlong Great that you enjoyed it.
Several of us quite enjoy the focus and energy from fasting, not just the health benefits.

Dumpyandabdabs · 15/05/2014 01:49

Just catching up on The Island on channel 4, now thats real fasting!! Next time I'm struggling mid afternnon on a FD I'll think about those guys surviving on coconut and sea snails for a week!

Shatteredmamma1 · 15/05/2014 06:47

nims I had an awful weekend food wise- so annoying isn't it. Back on track though- we can do it!!

Thanks for the weekly plan TP - I hasn't seen that before. that might lead to weight loss!!

Good luck/well done everyone else Grin

nims1981 · 15/05/2014 06:48

bigchoc I'm so pleased fasting was the answer, how long did it take? I've woken up feeling really blue as I'm sure I made up all of today's FD calories last nightSad Maybe I could try another fast day but with the weekend looming its not very likely!

Bimblepops · 15/05/2014 07:22

Help! I really really don't want to fast today, I just want to go to the farm with DS2, have a muck around and then make (and eat) a normal family supper for everyone. I'm tired and want to relax. I'm such a wuss.

VanGogh · 15/05/2014 08:42

MORNING!!!

Checking in for my first ever day of the 5:2. Starting with a fast and off to work out my vitals! I'll be back as I am a weak woman with a love of cheese and wine Blush

tiggermummy70 · 15/05/2014 09:01

Morning all.
Should be a fast day for me but I don't think it will be not sure I can survive getting kids to beavers & picked up by our friend who's looking after them before doing another show tonight on minimal food.
I have skipped on breakfast this morning and will see if I can hang out until lunch at least as I'll be having dinner with the my girls tonight.
They agreed on Leons instead of McDonalds for their takeaway. Its very inconsiderate of my bosses to keep booking afternoon stuff on a thursday. I normally give them a pasta based dish I heat up at work and sling into thermoses for them to munch on the train on our way to Beavers, but if I am not in the office they don't like it cold.

Hope everyone has a good day today. GL FD'ers

SpottyTeacakes · 15/05/2014 09:03

NFD for me but going to have a carb free full fat Wink dinner to help me with FD tomorrow.

bbcessex · 15/05/2014 09:06

Morning all.
Happy birthday Cider and have a fabulous holiday.. what a great way to spend your 49+1th !

Welcome VanGogh.. I'm a relative newbie myself - 3 weeks in and I am LOVING it :-)

Non-scales victory for me today... scales said no loss last Saturday, but today I can get in to a work suit that did not fit last week, so woo hoo to that!

I wonder what the scales will say again on Sat.. I'm no longer as concerned if they don't move. If I can wear previously too-tight clothes now, something's got to be working.. I would like the scales to go down though.. too many decades of 'weight' only mindset is hard to break...

bbcessex · 15/05/2014 09:07

tiggermummy - what's Leons?

bbcessex · 15/05/2014 09:09

big choc - my 5k walk is now a 5k distance, fast week with some sprints, plus I'm doing sit ups and push ups as often as poss.

I'm sure that's helped with my NSV of fitting in to work clothes..

I also have a powerplate machine which I've dragged back in to service. It's amazing for doing crunches and push ups on. I love it.
