The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, ^combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BREASTFEEDERS: Start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: Is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast : If pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: If you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).

Mmm chicken bhuna sounds nice!

Errol I have really skinny legs Hmm not very toned though and no boobs so I think that makes my stomach and hips look bigger!

ScarlettInSpace · 07/05/2014 16:39

I've got both the hairy bikers diet cookbooks, they are fab, the chicken bhuna is only 305 calories Grin I've been thinking about it all day Grin

womblesofwestminster · 07/05/2014 16:46

I'd rather be a pear like you guys than an apple. Health-wise as well as vanity-wise.

ChocolateTwist · 07/05/2014 16:59

It sounds like you must be heading towards being a banana, Wombles, with ADF and all that exercise losing four pounds a week together with exercise! Your willpower is astounding.
And errol I'm close enough to having been a child to remember with shame and regret calling my mum "fat" as a child - now I can see she isn't at all (and she was thinner then!) I'm a pear too and dreadfully self-conscious about swimsuits, but I'm sure that your children are judging you by the standards of children, who haven't gone through puberty etc.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/05/2014 17:39

Well done, Wombles, you showed 'em at your gym

Yes, that's one type of HIIT, Baloostika
Also try one day a week where you do much more intense intervals within say 10 mins, more like Tabata, then just walk or lift.

Welcome, Scarlett

BigChocFrenzy · 07/05/2014 17:41

Those who are pear-shaped: broad shoulders disguise that, so adding upper body muscle gives a better shape.

MazzleDazzle · 07/05/2014 17:42

Spotty how old is your DD? Not that age is any excuse for being so mean. The F word is banned in this house! Yeah, I'll join you for Friday's fast and you're right about Sunday, but like you I don't know if I can be arsed!

My HIIT was 30 secs at max intensity, then 10 secs rest X 7 of the following...

  • jumping knees to chest
  • burpees
  • speed running on the spot
  • squat/arm raise with weight
  • plank raise/lower from hands to elbow

There was another 2 Wombles, but I've forgotten what they were! You've done really well to have lost 4lb in a week and I'd def. suggest the post Xmas weigh in, if only to prove how wonderfully effective this WOL truly is.

Not long finished dinner. Lack if sleep has made this day d r a g. I am truly stuffed! 1620 cals total today and it was more like 18:6 than 16:8. Kitchen is now closed!

SpottyTeacakes · 07/05/2014 17:45

She's three, four next month, so really doesn't know any better!

SquirrelledAway · 07/05/2014 17:50

I've just bought an Uglies swimming cossie - double layer and quite flattering, although cut higher on the hip than I would normally go for (chunky thighs here too).

I try not to compare myself to the super toned teenage athletes that I am forever surrounded by on the basis that I am triple their age plus have had two babies.

Although that doesn't stop me drooling at the twenty-somethings that strut around showing off their six packs.

almostthereagain · 07/05/2014 17:54

well done WOW! well on your way to 8lbs in 6weeks (iirc?)
Well done to you too scarlet
Yuk to slugs, I resorted to pellets last night since the rain was due. Good job I did as I had a slug grave yard here this morning but lettuce seedlings still intact. I will be fasting tomorrow, eaten TOO much today already

SpottyTeacakes · 07/05/2014 17:54

I've decided on one of the cut out swimsuits. It looks ok as it has tie sides and covers the stretch marks on my stomach

Miffytastic · 07/05/2014 18:20

Ooooof.... Just cooking BNS curry and really flagging now....can't even go to bed early as I have to work tonight

SpottyTeacakes · 07/05/2014 19:42

Argh I've ruined all my hard work and just eat half an Easter egg and a packet of crisps over my TDEE Blush and I still want more Blush

Shatteredmamma1 · 07/05/2014 20:07

Ladies I've just managed my first fast day! Grin
Finally. Been trying to do this forever but now I know I can (may have to go to bed early...!!) Does it get easier? What do people use as salad dressings- is balsamic ok?
Tia.
Spotty- never mind- back on it tomorrow!!
Smile

ncjustbecause · 07/05/2014 20:10

Second ever fast day today. As before, hunger not an issue, but really irritable around 4pm. Kids were at after-school club, which helped, but it did take everything i had to stay upbeat around them. Dh popped home at half four and I felt really annoyed about that Hmm. Had a 300cal lunch at half two. Do need to find a way to get through those tough afternoon hours.

If the next couple of fasts aren't better, then I may consider fasting 4pm - 4pm - or something similar. Would be nervous about being rubbish at work the day after, but worth trying.

Also - has anyones lost weight doing fast-five or 16:8 - or are those maintenance things? I find fasting from 7pm til 2pm next day really easy and convenient. Could do it five days a week, wondered if I would lose on that or if i need the big calorie deficit. I probably do, don't I?

Off to catch up on thread. It moves fast round here!

ncjustbecause · 07/05/2014 20:11

Well done and welcome shattered. I am very new to this too.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 07/05/2014 20:22

Welcome nc and shattered :)

Good NFD today. Have done 16:8 and come in below TDEE by about 3-400 cals. Good job, because tomorrow is my birthday and I intend to treat myself to breakfast! We are also eating out in the evening and I'm assuming there will be some birthday cake involved somewhere, but I have a facial and a haircut booked (DH has taken the day off to do house/DC things) so I won't be anywhere where I can snack.

nc I really struggled with that 4pm thing too. It does get easier as your body gets used to going for long stretches without food. The only thing I would say about doing a 4pm-4pm fast is that while you will get a lot of the health benefits associated with fasting, you probably won't lose much weight because you will eat normal lunch and breakfast one day, and then normally from 4pm onwards the next day - do you see what I mean?
In his book Michael Mosely talks about a study that was done involving men who ate in a similar pattern to that, and they saw reduction in the factors that cause increased risk of heart disease/cancer etc, but they didn't lose any weight. I cannot remember if they lost body fat off the top of my head - someone else will probably remember.
Anyway - there are several people on the thread, myself included, who have eased into doing full FDs via mini-fasts of 750-1000 cals, working down gradually.

bbcessex · 07/05/2014 20:24

welcome Shattered and hi to everyone else.. I'm on week 2-ish.

Still getting used to this WOE... the FDs are the easy bits for me.. it's the NFDs that I am struggling with.

Having lost 4lbs last week, this Sat is weigh day.. I've done a fast on Sunday, huge blow out on Monday, TDEE plus a small amount on Tue, and FD today. I'm going for a TDEE less 10% tomorrow, and an FD on Friday.. I'm really hoping for a 1lb loss but who knows... a 'stay the same' will probably be a victory too!

Good luck all.

(oh - and BigChoc - threw some more 'sprints' and running sections into my 'fast' walking today as well... thought of you!).

ErrolTheDragon · 07/05/2014 20:54

chocolatetwist - oh, it wasn't my DD who uttered the F word... the only personal comments she makes is that her shoulders are way higher than mine - she's a fraction shorter but square-shouldered, mine slope - and that without a bra my boobs are also way lower than hers Grin. Both true, but fortunately since bras exist I don't care. We're actually much the same size now, but she's more of an apple, unfortunately, but also I think gains muscle quicker than me. Different something-or-other-morph I suppose.

Hello newcomers! shattered - yes, it does get easier as you learn what suits you. Salad dressing - well, whatever you want within your calorie limit, balsamic is what I'd go for, maybe mixed with a bit of yogurt and seasoning (looks weird but I like it). Anyway - great that you now know that you can! Smile

MazzleDazzle · 07/05/2014 20:57

Shatteredemme - garlic, chilli, ginger, chopped up finely, a large glug of whichever vinegar you fancy and a squirt of agave nectar or honey. Keeps well in fridge. I use it as a dressing for salad or steamed veg. Well done on your first successful FD!

Ooooohhhhhh I'd love the other half Spotty! Yum. Don't feel too bad. Tomorrow is another day!

I love the Hairy Bikers's Chicken and Ham Tangle Pie! Though I miss out the pastry entirely, so its more like a casserole. Their recipes are fab, but sometimes use low fat alternatives with added junk, so I tweak them slightly.

Welcome all newbies!

SpottyTeacakes · 07/05/2014 21:02

I think it's because I hadn't drunk enough. Going to do a mini fast tomorrow

ErrolTheDragon · 07/05/2014 21:03

nc - if you want to lose weight, you need a calorie deficit by whatever means. It may be possible to do this by 16:8 and even moreso fast5 if you miss a meal or two and then don't just eat that much more at the meals you do have. Why not give it a go - if it doesn't work for you, you might well find that then it would be easier to move towards FDs.

ChocolateTwist · 07/05/2014 21:23

Sorry errol I meant Spotty! Now I'm feeling even more guilty after what some people said - in my defence I picked it up from her criticising herself, I was about four and she was either pregnant or just had been at the time. And I know better now.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/05/2014 21:57

Chocolate -oh, don't feel bad about that long-ago faux pas - I doubt anyone worries too much about what a 4yo says!

Anyway... as a direct result of the unfortunate half-slug, I had a nice prawn curry this evening. I had to take DD shopping for DofE expedition provisions when she got home, so it was just a quick combination of a couple of roasted, skinned red peppers, bag of defrosted prawns and a jar of lloyd grossman's green thai sauce, with (even more lazily) half a pouch of coconut and something uncle bens, and some green beans and soya beans. two more portions left, will have some tomorrow for FD dins with veg and no rice.

ScarlettInSpace · 07/05/2014 22:15

I can confirm the HB chicken bhuna is bloody delicious - even curry-fiend OH enjoyed it Grin

I'm kind of hourglass shaped but I carry a lot of my weight on my tummy so I am currently wearing a lot of baggy tops Sad

I'm getting married next June so have got something to aim for, need to drop 2 dress sizes at least

Well that's my first FD done too, well done to everyone else who made it! and so successful (545 calories, v happy for 1st one!) I might try to do my 2nd tomorrow. Thanks for the welcome Smile
