The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, ^combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BREASTFEEDERS: Start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: Is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast : If pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: If you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).

Ugh - I'm a slug hater too. We used to have slugs in our house before doing building work on it - they used to come and have a party on our rugs in the living room every night. Bleurgh.

BCF - sorry to hear about the numpty heating engineers - hope they sort everything out AND pay to repair the damage. Strangling them will definitely work off some calories.

FD today and have zumba and a pt session tonight. Somehow 500 cals doesnt feel like much right now but am sure it'll be ok. An now 3.5 kg down on starting weight so feels good to be seeing some results at last.

SpottyTeacakes · 07/05/2014 10:18

Today will be a day of carbs and chocolate mousses. Ds is snotty and feverish and we're out of calpol. I might even have a nap. Will have a healthy dinner though.

Slugs are gross yuck!
Good luck those on a FD.

Miffytastic · 07/05/2014 11:16

Hello, signing in for my first FD of the week due to the long weekend. I'm afraid I haven't been very good at counting my NFD cals nor in exercising but I did go out on Saturday night and danced for 2 and half hours straight so I'm chalking that up!

BigChocFrenzy · 07/05/2014 11:39

Journal of Experimental Biology, Aug 2006:
slugs are 5.1% carbs,0.5% fat, 7.1% protein and 85% water

So, very low cal & low carb if you plan to make habit of this
Smile

ErrolTheDragon · 07/05/2014 11:43

I hope for their own sakes the heating company sorts everything out properly.....wouldn't want to meet a pissed off BC!

I'm waiting for a computer to do stuff before I can get down to work properly, so I've done my JM dvd (6week6pack) plus extra upper body free weights. Before that, I tried on my wetsuits (size 12)... the shortie is a bit looser than a wetsuit should be, the full length is ok (bit slack around the midsection) but definitely looks less sausage-legged than last year. So then I tried on DD's age 14 ones... hmm, given that she's developed over the winter while I've been shrinking a bit, I think we might be swapping!!

BetsyBell · 07/05/2014 11:44

They missed the 100% ick in that nutritional breakdown bigchoc. I once ate (a bit of) sea cucumber - it has the texture of what I imagine a slug to be like. I am planning to never eat a sea cucumber again. Nor slugs.

OP posts:
ErrolTheDragon · 07/05/2014 11:47

Slugs are just pre-shelled snails ... they'd probably be delicious fried with garlic.

HumphreyCobbler · 07/05/2014 11:52

I could just about eat a snail if I had to but I would not contemplate eating a slug. I wonder why?

ChocolateTwist · 07/05/2014 11:57

Because snails are harmless and friendly creatures and slugs are malevolent and slimy. That is my scientific opinion.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/05/2014 12:04

I've never had a snail, but I guess we see them as landlubber seafood. Prawns - yum! clams - yum! whelks... ok ... so snails ok too.

(hmm... got some prawns in the freezer... was planning chickpea thai curry but might change that!)

positively9something · 07/05/2014 12:39

Hi all

So I had a successful fd yesterday I was quite hungry and very very tired as I am extremely low in iron at the moment and I think I have been over eating to give me energy. I am taking an iron supplement so I hope it kicks in soon.

plecofjustice · 07/05/2014 12:40

Why thank you BCF So not too much of a dent in my fast day!

I thoroughly washed my salad again before today's lunch.....

I love snails, seafood, etc, it was more the sensation of biting into something that clearly wasn't salad!

Still, good FD yesterday and a lot of nice food made for the rest of the week. Ironically, I love cooking on FD's, it's nice to be around food doing stuff, but not eating it

womblesofwestminster · 07/05/2014 13:48

I lost 4 pounds this week!!!!! The gym staff we like: Shock > Hmm > Envy

Do you guys think they'll be dissing fasting for much longer? Wink

MazzleDazzle · 07/05/2014 14:16

Hellie I stopped using night time nappies after a week of successful potty training. I seemed easier that way. Killing 2 birds with one stone as it were. Kids had a potty, loo roll and motion sensor night light if they needed a wee through the night.

Checked my stats and over the last 9 weeks I've lost 4lb. Harrumph.

There's been holiday gain, Easter egg gain and bank holiday gain. After every gain I manage to shift it, but enough's enough!

I need to start losing properly again!

NFD here. Went to HIIT this morning, then broke my fast at 12pm with a seeded ham roll with salad, no dressing, followed by a dry oatcake (500 cals total). It was from a coffee shop as well, so feeling extra virtuous in dodging the baked goods, though I did take great pleasure in drooling over the menu.

After last night's drama both kids were up through the night and then woke at 6:30am! They were fresh as daisies. I am not.

Hot smoked salmon and quinoa for dinner I think, with lots of lovely veg. and fruit salad. I finally managed to make my own nut butter, so may have some of that on a wholemeal scone.

Anyone fasting today? There seemed a lot of us fasting yesterday. Think Fri will prob. be my next FD.

SpottyTeacakes · 07/05/2014 14:23

I'm doing Friday too mazzle and did yesterday. Feel like I should do a Sunday too but it's a hard day to do!

HumphreyCobbler · 07/05/2014 14:33

4 lbs!!! That is brilliant.

I am really finding the value of my glass teapot. It holds enough for about five cups, I put a couple of teabags in, fill it up and leave it on the aga to stay warm. I then drink it over the next hour or so, it is always the right temp to avoid scalding the baby and I don't have a nasty teabag floating around the bottom of the cup. I am properly and healthily hydrated. And it looks pretty. Hurrah.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/05/2014 14:34

wow, Wombles (think I'll call you by your acronym WoW Wink). IIRC you've not much to lose so that's a lot for one week. Tell you what - whether you win this challenge or not, you should suggest that everyone goes back for a weigh-in after another 6 months to see whether they've gone up, down or maintained. That's the real test of any WOE.

womblesofwestminster · 07/05/2014 14:53

ErrolTheDragon lol so true! I'll suggest a post-xmas weigh in Grin Wotta bitch I am.

To be fair, the gym's diet challenge isn't all bad. They give out weekly low-GI recipe sheets which I've found pretty good.

Mazzle that seeded ham roll sounds delish. Shame it's a FD here :( What kind of HIIT did you do, btw?

HumphreyCobbler I've never heard of a glass teapot. Is the glass just for aesthetics or does it keep the tea hotter? I bloodly love tea.
But not on FDs.

HumphreyCobbler · 07/05/2014 15:05

I think it is just for the look of it! I wanted one after my friend gave me jasmine flower tea in one and it looked so lovely.

Baloostika · 07/05/2014 15:15

BUT I can imagine that situation and how irritated I'd be. Congrats to Dinky and Wembley on there SVs.
I'm on an impromptu FD today as I have our annual Rotary District Conference beginning tomorrow. I manages sensible eating during our Polio Summit last week by avoiding all d crabs and eating just veggies and protein so I know I can do it. I'll be eating sensibly but just can't fast Smile.
I did an hours walk run interval today, one minute walk and one minute run/jog., what do u think about it BCF does it count as hiit?
Happy fasting to all fasters.

Baloostika · 07/05/2014 15:17

Typo errors Angry. I meant BCF not BUT

veryseriousgirl · 07/05/2014 15:46

wombles that's really awesome. I hope your gym staff take it all on board! And thanks, metella, megrim, and BCF for the support on Sunday evening. Decided to have a fun, active, screen-free Monday and felt better for it. Ended up losing a pound over the week, which was far better than what I was imagining!

Had a good FD yesterday (511 cals) including a longer-than-planned run, when I got lost trying to cut across some fields. Blush Tummy was rumbling all through yoga this morning though, despite a sensible breakfast. Planning another FD tomorrow so that I can enjoy a trip to a swanky local café / farm shop on Friday morning. Anyone else fasting tomorrow?

SpottyTeacakes · 07/05/2014 16:02

Bought five swimsuits online and dd told me I was fat Hmm keeping one though. I carry all my weight on my hips. Really need to tone my stomach muscles too

ErrolTheDragon · 07/05/2014 16:10

VSG - I'll probably do my 2nd FD tomorrow, though might do it friday.

Spotty - I'm hip and thigh heavy (that and upper arms) - but definitely better since I started 5:2 and shred type stuff. As well as the wetsuits, I tried on a cossie which had been tight to pull on (inelastic legholes) but was fine today! Stick with it and you'll see changes too.

ScarlettInSpace · 07/05/2014 16:24

Hi everyone, hope you don't mind me jumping in!

I'm doing my first fast day today, feel like I'm doing pretty well despite a 2 hour business meeting in Costa Envy

I've been through a number of (sadly unsuccessful) fertility treatments in the lastcouple of years which has annoying left me a couple if stone overweight that I just can't shift Angry

Anyway I've just had2 dry krackawheat crackers and making hairy bikers chicken bhuna for tea Grin
