The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, ^combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BREASTFEEDERS: Start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: Is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast : If pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: If you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).

Spotty snap on the carb'y lunch and I still feel bloated - I don't feel like dinner at all. So I'm just going to sip water for a while, if I'm not hungry, I'm not eating, novel idea eh Grin
Cider have a brilliant holiday and super well done on the SV, you're going to NYC yes? Plenty of walking around that's for sure! Great to get into a different stone, a even if you have a gain after the hols, 2-3 fasts will see you right. I've 4 weeks to my hols, all this talk is getting me excited! BC enjoy your pastries etc. your trip sounds lovely! Spotty I did Zante about 6 years ago when we only had 1dd, I remember some amazing Greek yogurt! And gorgeous weather. I wish I was going away right now!!!

BigChocFrenzy · 30/04/2014 17:59

The real FD essential is to plan and exactly calorie count all food & drink in advance. Also plan activities for the day, to keep busy.
Tip: in advance, pour our your day's allowance for any milk and sugar into 2 little jugs.

SpottyTeacakes · 30/04/2014 18:01

Big I'm usually a great cook! A combination of ds hanging off my eg crying and trying to weigh out the food/work out carbs/insulin ratio meant some rather black halloumi Angry was still quite tasty though! And I'm under 1000cals this NFD?! So room for a whole Easter egg later Grin

Helliecopter · 30/04/2014 18:31

Just had an M&S ready meal for my dinner. I am whizzing off out to band rehearsal and I didn't have any eggs in (shocker!) so ended up dinging a Count on Us sweet and sour chicken. It might only come in at 370 cals but bloody hell it was disappointing. I've only done fresh meals on FDs before now and was used to massive plate of roast veg or steak and salad...
It didn't taste terrible in its defence and if you regularly have them on FDs for ease, I can totally relate to why...but I am more hungry now than before I ate it! Think I'll use 100 cals on something then close the kitchen.

MazzleDazzle · 30/04/2014 19:07

Bumble, your poor cat. Thanks

(((Hugs))) to chose with sick kids, especially if you're poorly too. My DC are both on the mend. Hopefully they'll be able to go back to school/play group tomorrow. My DH has looked after them all day!

I had HIIT class in the morning then straight to college. Forgot my pack lunch! It was a bit hairy for a while, but managed to negotiate all the junk at Sainsbo's and bought an apple and a small sushi pack. Phew! Was still hungry though, but a coffee and 6 tictaks stopped me from raiding the vending machine.

NFD here, but did 16:8. Have done pretty well today and I've still got nearly 500 cals left! Think I'll have a glass of wine with some olives and save the rest for the weekend.

Congrats on the collarbones Hellie and anyone else who is finding some sharp edges under their wobbly bits!

Had a quick nip round the shops on my way home from college. I'm going out at the weekend and after last weeks's wardrobe smassacre I've hardly any clothes left! Everything I bought today was a size 12. I am delighted! Granted, some things were more of a squeeze than others, but I'm still chuffed.

ChocolateTwist · 30/04/2014 20:14

Congratulations everyone who has found new bits of skeleton recently and Mazzle on your smaller clothes!
I have now declared the kitchen closed (new thing for me, normally I snack all through the day) and am planning to LOF with miso soup in emergencies until 19:30 tomorrow, wish me luck! Some kind person has just given me a chocolate bar but I've told myself I can have it another day and put it in my drawer for Friday...
I hope all sick children feel better soon and have a wonderful evening everyone! See you for fasting tomorrow Ali

ChocolateTwist · 30/04/2014 20:17

Sorry for two posts - BigChoc I actually can't cook at all either! Do you really eat out or do you have any good tips for healthy FD eating involving vegetables etc which don't involve cooking?
Sorry for taking advantage of everyone's expertise - this is such a knowledgeable and welcoming group!
Thanks

positively9something · 30/04/2014 21:15

Hi all I'm thinking about re-joining the thread with my tail between my legs Confused

Not sure if anyone remembers me but before Xmas I started at 10.8 went down to a fraction below 10 stone which I was over the moon about on Xmas eve then after Xmas started fasting again and couldn't get my weight down. I think I stalled around 10.2/10.4 now I'm all the way back upto 10.8 Hmm

So I think I will start fasting again I just get demotivated when my weight stalls.

Also I now know for certain I have pcos anyone else got that and successfully lost weight and kept it off?

I am also extremely low on iron and I think as a result I have been over eating to try to get energy!

So I'm back with iron and I know I need to do it all again ShockShockShock

TalkinPeace · 30/04/2014 21:56

and I was doing so well .....

no brekky, two carrots and some tea for lunch
more tea when I got home from work

and then DH handed me a manhattan and fixed toad in the hole washed down with wine for supper Grin
I luff him but its bad for my waistline!

maybe tomorrow will be nearer 500 calories !

SpottyTeacakes · 30/04/2014 21:58

Talkinpeace you still had a good fast though!

Southeastdweller · 30/04/2014 22:04

Lovely story posted today on the inspirational thread by MyWonderfulMimi Flowers

Bimblepops · 30/04/2014 22:47

Good evening everyone,

Congratulations to all hip and rib bone people - I'm looking forward to seeing my hips again one day (and soon!).

Cat is struggling on, not as bad news as we'd expected, but it's only a matter of time. Gives us more time to get the kids used to the idea of death...

I decided against fasting today and treated myself to a very nice Thai lunch - loads of veg, some nice chilli and a bit of rice, then a bit more. Other than that, I've only eaten a slice of toast and marmite and a 45g pack of mini-eggs (which I just scarfed down, very nice). I'm counting today as a semi-fast!

Will have a proper FD tomorrow - no bonkers things going on!

Have a lovely holiday BigChoc.

Bimblepops · 30/04/2014 22:48

Oooh and I meant to say thank you and Thanks to you all for being so sweet about my cat.

Southeastdweller · 30/04/2014 23:04

There's no list of FD essentials as such - one reason why this WOL works for many of us is because it's not prescriptive - but in addition to the advice given by BigChoc this old-timer advises keeping very minimal junk food at home and lots of healthy nutritious food instead. If the crap's not there then you can't have it.

BigChocFrenzy · 30/04/2014 23:17

ChocTwist I really do eat out every NFD
Blush
either in one of the 3 (!) good local restaurants or in our superb work canteen (it has 5 meal choices, plus grill, salad bar, pasta bar, several different extra veg)

I eat lots of fish, some meat, around 7 veg + 1 fruit portions per NFD

For FDs, I usually have 3-4 x Atkins RTD low carb shakes, like in one of the human trials, plus veg juice and cocoa. So, no cooking involved.

For FDs with min cooking:
. smoked salmon / tinned tuna + GOOD ready-made salads + lemon
. boiled / scrambled eggs + raw tomatoes
. veg omelette + sprinkle of grated cheese + horseradish sauce
. GOOD ready-made soups like Covent Garden or Innocent to MW
. GOOD ready-made veg curry / stew with NO rice / pasta / potato - I add a tin of peas & carrots + a tin of mushrooms, then MW
Blush
Personally, I HATE those smelly slimy zero-cal noodles, but some here love 'em
I avoid starches and fruit on FDs to go low carb. Some other folk don't. See what suits you.

BigChocFrenzy · 30/04/2014 23:23

I totally agree with SED: Try to avoid buying junk, like baked goods, milk choc etc. When you go for a dessert, make it a really good quality one, not mass-produced.
Any other family members who can't live without junk should shop for themselves.
Small DCs and their visitors really can survive a few years without added sugar.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/04/2014 23:27

Hellie - ready meals really do need that pile of extra veg!

Well, today didn't turn into an unplanned FD after all - we had lamb shanks with rice (not much for me) and lots of veg. I also had half a grapefruit, a third of a pineapple (there must be a world glut, they're ridiculously cheap at the moment) and a toaster waffle with a bit of nutella. But as that was all (apart from quite a bit of milk in drinks and a miso sachet) I think below even my tidgy TDEE!

BigChoc, I thought you were a scientist...have you destroyed any labs or is your havoc purely domestic? Grin

Boleh · 01/05/2014 00:18

Errol and Spotty enjoy your hols - Mull is beautiful, I remember watching an otter playing in the sea from the road! I've never been to Zante but I seem to recall my sister loving it and their being nesting turtles while she was there - does that sound right or am I on totally the wrong island..?!

BigChoc I admire your resolve, going out is when my NFDs completely collapse! I just have no willpower to choose the grilled fish with salad in the face of carbonara or risotto for example! I could cheerfully eat my TDEE in one plate at a restaurant let alone one meal! Smile

I am off on a short break this morning, first activity is a rice cooking demo - I see there being a lot of rice on this trip. However we have planned a lot of hiking too so I'm hoping that as long as my knee holds out the damage shouldn't be too bad! I hope the glut of pineapples errol mentioned extends up here the pineapples grown in Bario are out of this world, if they are available there's a good chance I'll eat one in a single sitting Blush

dizhin79 · 01/05/2014 02:23

hi all, got fd number 4 today, still managed to lose 1.5 lb in the last week, even with some crap days. Grin Gives me motivation to get better at the nfds and reach my 1st goal weight by the end of may. (hopefully)

dizhin79 · 01/05/2014 02:26

aaargh posted too soon! going to attempt some hiit, abs and another nice long walk later on!

Good luck other Thursday fasters Grin

MetellaEstMater · 01/05/2014 03:57

Hi all. Successful FD helped by going to bed at 7.15pm. DD2 has only just woken up for a feed so I've had my longest stretch if sleep for 16 weeks by far (although have been up for an hour wondering when DD would wake).

See you're posting in the wee small hours too dizhin - hope it's been an okay night!

SpottyTeacakes · 01/05/2014 07:10

Yes Zante is the one with the turtles Smile

NFD today will be a FD tomorrow as working 6:45-1:30. I find if I snack in the evening then I wake up starving but if I close the kitchen after dinner I don't.

dizhin79 · 01/05/2014 07:48

hey metella yep my one is only 7 weeks old so still on night feeds! I'm ebf so late night posts are good amusements whilst master chugalot has his feed Grin

BetsyBell · 01/05/2014 08:20

Right! Thursday is fast day. Hot, weak tea consumed, I'm wearing my running gear and will head out once the kidlets have gone to school. Might be a soggy run, but no matter.

Shower and coffee when I get back, then I'll make a little salad for lunch which I will take to work. Not sure exactly what dinner is going to be but the fridge is groaning with suitable salad items so it'll be something tasty and zingy thrown together later, possibly with an elaborate ginger and lime dressing. The kids can have pasta with theirs.

I am odd in that I still enjoy preparing and working with food on a fast day. I enjoy the process of putting together highly nutritious yet low calorie combinations. I do have to hold back on the tasting and picking as I'm going along though, which is hard. However, I've been doing this for ages and I don't think I enjoyed it quite so much in the first couple of months! It helps that DH does this with me now, although I used to just make him the same as me and he could add pasta if he wanted to.
