The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, ^combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BREASTFEEDERS: Start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: Is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast : If pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: If you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).

Morning all

I feel great this morning after yesterday's FD. Scales being stubborn but clothes are looser, belt a notch tighter, chin a little less dumpy Grin
I too felt starving at about 9pm last night, but I haven't eaten yet this morning because I'm just not hungry. So today is going to be a 16:8 I think.

Chocolate I will be fasting tomorrow :)

TheOrchardKeeper · 30/04/2014 10:42

Thanks.

I thought I was feeling much better but apparantly not. Head isn't wooly anymore but I still feel pretty weak and knackered, especially with an ILL DS to look after.

Next week will be much better Grin

Dumpyandabdabs · 30/04/2014 11:34

Thanks for the advise, Okay here are my stats;

Height: 154cm (I'm a short arse, no doubt about that!!)
Waist: 66cm
Hips:81cm

The Body fat calculator says 19.6%

I guess it could be also stress related, I work part time as a chef so its pretty heavy going but I also I have a cake business at home which involves a lot of late nights and stressy moments as I have to do most of my work after the kids go to bed. Its been manic lately so I haven't had chance to do as much exercise as I would normally.

I guess its just a bit unnerving as I've never missed one (other than when I was pregnant). Its highly unlikely I am but will test again tomorrow and go see the GP if it doesn't appear by the end of the week.

CiderwithBuda · 30/04/2014 11:36

Quick hello from me as I need to get packed and sorted.

Orchard - rubbish feeling ill. Hope it passes.

Good luck on fasts everyone.

BigChoc - I think i will check out the exercise thread when I get back. Will be looking for advice and info on starting HIIT from a very unfit starting point!

Happy SV for me. Wanted 14st 13 this morning. I got 14st 12 and a quarter. And that's with yesterday's food still on board iykwim! Happy enough with that as I'm planning on healthy day today too. Having my smoothie now. Second half. Had half earlier. Have salmon and salad for lunch.

Won't be able to weigh tomorrow as my dad doesn't have a scales so next weigh in will be when I get back next week. That might not be good!

ErrolTheDragon · 30/04/2014 11:36

Bimble - if you've skipped dinner and not eaten yet you'll have had a fast anyway. Sorry you've got a poorly cat. Flowers Perhaps better to plan to eat something nice but nutritious, in the circumstances?

Hellie 'I think my collarbones are coming back! ' - nice NSV when things emerge from hiding, isn't it? ... I find my rediscovered hipbones quite motivating and DH remarked yesterday on the presence of ribs. Grin (does depend how I'm standing!)

Orchard - Flowers [tea]

Ali - if the scales are the same but clothes looser etc then you've probably traded some fat for muscle.

bbcessex · 30/04/2014 11:42

oh, errolthedragon, how I long for the day when I can see (or feel!) a hipbone!!!

Is your story on the inspiring stories thread?

Helliecopter · 30/04/2014 12:05

Brilliant Cider! Well done.

Errol - Yes, it's fab! I think I'm a good couple of stone from hipbones being faintly visible again but I'll get there. Ribs...ooh you must be chuffed with that!

ErrolTheDragon · 30/04/2014 12:38

Hellie, bbc - they're just waiting - you can dig them out!

MetellaEstMater · 30/04/2014 13:58

Funnily enough today was a hip bone revelation for me! Adjusting DD2's legs in the sling I suddey felt my left hip bone.

bimble so sorry about your cat Thanks

Today's fast is all about experimenting with my new nutribullet. I'm currently enjoying some pulverised spinach and berries. This morning I made a drunk with unsweetened almond milk, coffee and some protein powder. Feeling good and looking forward to veggie stew at DD1's teatime - eating very early as bikram class at 8pm.

veryseriousgirl · 30/04/2014 14:16

Afternoon all! Having a FD today - so far have had some veg stir fry with kids for lunch, so all on track. Did my yoga class this morning, and, while it was as challenging as usual, I didn't notice a real difference between fasted and non-fasted in terms of energy level.

bimble really sorry to hear about your cat. I hope that the news is OK.

Still no bone revelations for me! I think I have a way to go before then, but I think my chin's looking a little more defined (though this may simply be optimism...)

ErrolTheDragon · 30/04/2014 14:26

well, I've no idea what today is for me... at about 11:30 I felt hungry but a bit too late for brekkie and too early for lunch... a bit later I had some tea. Just had some miso because I was in the middle of some work... and some more tea bcause then I was doing something for DH and he made me a cup.

BigChocFrenzy · 30/04/2014 14:31

Oh, poor Bimble I hope you get better news about your cat.
Do post and vent if you need to.
((hugs))]

Best wishes to everyone going on hols
i've a week starting today, short cruises along the Rhine and shop-raiding with an old chum. Perfect ! Lovely weather here, so far.
My trusty iPad is coping well, so I'll post my lapses. So far, i've raided a bakery. I luvv brezels and nut slices
Blush
I'll skip future breakfasts and try to eat sensibly but will miss a week's exercise, so that's 3000 cals + already.
Anyway, this WOE copes with hols, as a normal part of life.

almostthereagain · 30/04/2014 15:00

Enjoy big choc sounds lovely. Yay to cider & Grin @ collarbones hellie!
Have had an unplanned 18 hr fast today, tomorrow is planned FD but will see how the rest of today goes, may come in under 500 yet!
Just had to break into my house (frighteningly easy to do)
bimble fingers xed for good news for you.

SpottyTeacakes · 30/04/2014 15:28

I've got six weeks until my holiday.

Had a super carby lunch today and feel so bloated I think it's put me off.

almostthereagain · 30/04/2014 15:37

Where you going spotty?
Bikini or anoraksGrin

SpottyTeacakes · 30/04/2014 15:44

I'm going to Zante! No bikini for me though Hmm anorak might be better Wink

ErrolTheDragon · 30/04/2014 15:57

Oh - just realised that it's less than 4 weeks till our May holiday - goretex and boots job, wildlife watching on Mull. We did the same last year and enjoyed it so much that we're doing it again - so we know that there will be good food and some excellent beer. Smile

Dumpyandabdabs · 30/04/2014 16:28

Jealous of all those heading off on their hols, we've got three days in a camping pod in Scarborough booked (oh the glamour) but not til August. Have a lovely time everyone.

spotty Went to Zante many moons ago for my first ever holiday away without my parents, was really nice.

Hopefully we'll have some sunshine in Blighty to look forward to

BetsyBell · 30/04/2014 16:31

Hurrah for holidays, hips and collarbones!

OP posts:
SpottyTeacakes · 30/04/2014 16:34

Dp and I have both been to Zante before but not together.

I haven't felt like snacking at all today and I'm not even hungry for dinner yet which is unusual Hmm

Is there a list of FD essentials anywhere?

bbcessex · 30/04/2014 17:10

bigchoc - I added a few 'sprints*' on my fast walk today, thanks to your advice - quite enjoyed it actually (what's going on there then!).

  • disclaimer.. I think only I would have called it a sprint Grin..
MetellaEstMater · 30/04/2014 17:14

So, Metella's 'no shit Sherlock tip of the day', turns out baking a loaf of bread on a FD is a bad idea.

Have a super holiday BC!

SpottyTeacakes · 30/04/2014 17:22

I burnt dinner Sad

ErrolTheDragon · 30/04/2014 17:24

bbc - that sounds like my 'sprints'.Grin But that's fine - it's not a competition!

spotty - or do you prefer teacakes? - FD essentials for me include miso soup sachets and a selection of herbal teas - currently liquorice and buttermint are my favourites. The other essential is to have either an easy low-cal recipe or a suitable ready meal, plus a heap of green veg.

BigChocFrenzy · 30/04/2014 17:55

Spotty Are you my secret twin ?
Grin
Older hands here know of my total culinary incompetence.
My planning for rare cooking attempts must include throwing out all pans used, plus scraping part of the meal off my kitchen ceiling and from hob / oven.
Some culinary adventures require redecorating the kitchen afterwards
Blush
So, I eat out every day. That's fun Smile
