The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, ^combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BREASTFEEDERS: Start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: Is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast : If pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: If you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).

Evening...
Been a busy weekend but I'm pleased to report a very successful FD today. Feel like I actually might be back in the saddle/on the train.
I'll catch up with all the posts in a bit, just wanted to check in first.
Hope you're all okay...

Happy birthday Mazzle Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 28/04/2014 22:54

Happy Birthday Mazzle. I'll be doing my FD tomorrow with you and Not2 and any other Tuesday people.

Hope everyone who had disrupted sleep last night gets a good one tonight.

ChocolateTwist · 28/04/2014 23:29

Happy birthday Mazzle, if ever there was a day to enjoy an almond slice it was this one!
Thank you for the advice, everyone - particularly TiP and BigChoc, I will definitely give those a try. Less talk more action from me.
Sleep well everyone.

CiderwithBuda · 28/04/2014 23:46

Happy Birthday Mazzle! If you can't have an almond slice on your birthday when can you?!

No idea what my calorie total was today. Thought I was doing well with the small portion of lasagna and not eating the actual lasagna sheets till I remembered I had a bite of garlic bread and that there was flour in the bechemel sauce. That will explain the bloated, gurgly tum.

Was hungry this evening and had a packet of Oatie bakes. And picked on honey roasted nuts and seeds.

Am going to attempt nothing till lunch tomorrow. Might even try LOF as I have a smoothie ready. Will see how I go.

Night all.

tiggermummy70 · 28/04/2014 23:53

finished FD at under 600 cals so happy to take that to the bank!
busy busy day of meetings helped with me missing lunch!!!!
have an interview on thursday..... not sure if I'll fast then or not

dizhin79 · 29/04/2014 05:29

if you weaken and have a bit of a pig out in the evening Sad but it's over 24hours since you began your fd would you give up the fd and start again the next day? yesterday began so well but ended in an extra 700 calories going on! Oh the shame!

SpottyTeacakes · 29/04/2014 05:40

Morning, I was on one of these threads ages ago. Going back to work and contraceptive injection has meant my weights crept up.

I eased myself in yesterday and doing a FD today hoping it won't be too hard as working 6:45-1:30 then I've got a hospital appt at 2:30. Just having a coffee now.

I'm diabetic so I'm just going to see how this goes wrt my sugar levels. They went mad yesterday morning and I'm wondering if it's because I didn't eat breakfast Confused

ErrolTheDragon · 29/04/2014 08:05

Good morning - FD for me. It's lovely and sunny so DH and I are going to take the dog to a bluebell wood by a stream in a moment. Need to get a drink first though.

Spotty, are you insulin dependent - can/should you do full-on fasts?

MazzleDazzle · 29/04/2014 08:44

Hello Spotty, Errol, Not2 and anyone else fasting with me today! (Waves hand)

Let's nail this FD!

diz I'd focus on all the fasting hours you had with empty tummy and consider that as soon as you broke the 500 barrier, you're fast was over. You'll do better next time.

Thanks for the birthday messages folks. From various people I got a pair of trainers, headphones for running and a new top for the gym. Buying these things for me last year would have been laughable! How my life has changed.

WATER, WATER, WATER people. Oh and then a lovely Brew.

Helliecopter · 29/04/2014 09:05

Morning

Hello Spotty I haven't got any experience with diabetes and 5:2 but just wanted to say good luck and I hope you find a way to make it work for you.

NFD for me today, but I'm still going to try to skip breakfast ignoring the marzipan I just stuffed in my gob when I went past the cake tin and just have a cup of peppermint and liquorice tea. It's the best stuff ever! I've a cracking headache and feel a bit crappy. I don't think it's to do with yesterday's FD...I've never suffered with post-fast headaches before but perhaps it's my body adjusting to the lack of sugar! Luckily I'm waiting in for a delivery of tiles today (I'm that rock and roll) so I can just stay at home and do a few cleaning jobs. Why is it when husbands have the children the house is a total wreck afterwards?! mumble mumble whinge whinge

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 29/04/2014 09:18

Good luck to all those on FDs today! Smile mine went very well yesterday, next one on Thursday. I haven't weighed myself yet, but people are starting to make nice comments, & my clothes are certainly looser! This WOE is definitely one I can stick with indefinitely Grin

almostthereagain · 29/04/2014 09:28

Morning all & a belated happy b'day to mazzle
Many thanks for all yesterdays info eat am feeling much more positive today aided no doubt by a good nights sleep. Also to big choc for interesting linkSmile
Well I can join the 'not fd fails but still getting back to proper ones' gang
as I had done really well, was feeling great then had taxi service to perform, school run, picking up some fertile eggs for my broody chuck, straight to station for ds pick up, deliver to cricket, then on to dd for netball. Was all set for supper of eggs on my return when I raided ds school cooking & scoffed a cheesy pastry triangleBlush 23 hrs & only had another 40 mins until I was home[wails] Came home & ate eggs, better than recent sabotaged attempts though so not going to be too hard on self & neither should you be dizhin not2 & mazzle & anybody else I've missed who's easing themselves back in.
Happy fasting Tuesdays fasters.

BetsyBell · 29/04/2014 09:39

Mazz! I can't believe you were attempting a birthday fast! Happy birthday for yesterday.

OP posts:
Alibabaandthe40nappies · 29/04/2014 09:41

Morning all :)

Belated Happy Birthday to Mazzle Grin

I am attempting a FD here today. Have 350 cal dinner planned, and I've got an exercise class this morning. I am sooo tired, DCs slept better last night but not great. If it ends up being a mini-fast then I shan't mind, but I'm starting aiming for 500.

EvilHerbivore · 29/04/2014 09:46

Happy Birthday Mazzle!

NFD for me today too, yesterdays FD went OK so feel good I've got one under my belt this week

Also a lovely sunny day here so I'm taking the kids to the beach for a run around, hopefully will inspire me to get beach ready lol 2 kids later, that ain't happening!

TheOrchardKeeper · 29/04/2014 09:46

Happy Birthday for yesterday Cake

It's all gone to shit Hmm Grin

DS has a nasty cold, as do I and I've just eaten whatever for the last 3 days. Am so pissed off about it but feel too shit to really do anything about it. Last FD was on thurs so planning on doing another tomorrow now i'm slowly getting better.

Feels like slowly crawling my way up a muddy mountain though Grin

Not2bObvious · 29/04/2014 09:48

Mazzle happy belated birthday, I was too excited at the thought of a fasting posse, I missed your birthday mention. Hope you had a lovely day, great presents, I'd love them. Just had a big guzzle of water and counted my fasting hours, up to 15 so far Wink Did a JM workout this morning so feeling good. Egg and gluten free bread (need a smidge of carb) planned for lunch, which I won't be having until I do a brisk 30 min walk- weather is good, need to stretch the muscles out. It all counts.
Hang on in there Tuesday TroupersGrin

TalkinPeace · 29/04/2014 10:26

Mazzle fasting on your birthday is very hardcore! I ended up drinking champagne and eating roule from the packet on my birthday - which is why my jeans are tight this week.

dizhin79
you need to change your focus.
At the moment you focus on the fact that you ate too much when you started eating, rather than that you succeeded in a 24 hour fast.
That is a success - eating too much was a blip.
Stop counting and referring back to the failures.

Remember, there is no such thing as a failed fast
there is ONLY a fast saved for the next day
that way positive thinking and success lie.

CiderwithBuda · 29/04/2014 10:43

Spotty - maybe try some protein for breakfast to balance your blood sugar? A boiled egg is only about 65 cals.

Orchard - you shouldn't fast if unwell so don't feel guilty. I would concentrate on a couple of days of healthy nourishing foods. No crap.

Just popping in as have a ton of stuff to do today. Have been to the gym - didn't eat anything beforehand. Have had a tea, a water and a coffee so far. Have Pilates at 1 so will have a shower now and then have my smoothie. Or maybe half of it and have half later.

Happy fasting everyone who is fasting and mindful eating those on NFDs!

dinkystinky · 29/04/2014 10:50

Happy birthday for yesterday Mazzle - sounds like you had a good day. Had super hectic weekend with DS1's birthday (there may have been cake involved) but managed FD and bodycombat yesterday and am doing a mini FD today (aiming for 900 - 1000 cals) to get back on track. Weighed in this morning and have lost 2kg which is better than the week before so its good to be seeing results.

Those of you doing HIIT have you tried/would you recommend Tabata? My gym runs 30 min Tabata sessions and was wondering if I should try it out this week. Do you do your HIIT sessions on your FDs?

dizhin79 · 29/04/2014 10:56

hi all, thanks for the encouragement! have done some hiit and will take the dog on an extra long walk in a bit. Have defrosted low fat lentil soup for lunch so am hoping to make today a positive day to make up for yesterday!

Bimblepops · 29/04/2014 11:09

Hello all,

Sorry you're feeling so ill, Orchard, hope you're on the mend soon.

I was another of the Monday FD gang and honestly felt absolutely terrific yesterday - went 20 hrs between eating, got loads of jobs done, had a lovely 70 min cycle through the forest and came in at around 550 calories.

NFD today. Had some toast for breakfast, but not sure why as I didn't really want it or particularly enjoy it. Going to go and drink some more water now and then head to the gym to hit the treadmill for a bit.

Good luck to all the fasters today. Am rather oddly excited about tomorrows FD!

TheOrchardKeeper · 29/04/2014 11:29

Thank you.

I did my online shop today so will have lots of yummy healthy things in the house by tomorrow instead of tinned/frozen/cupboard basics stuff.

Planning on doing a lovely looking spicy mexican chicken thing I saw on the recipe thread tomorrow Smile

womblesofwestminster · 29/04/2014 11:57

95% of short term diets fail

Strangely enough, the gym cited that stat in their literature.

Their plan (they even call it a way of life) is: eat every 4 hours, and your entire diet should be 80% 'good low-gi' stuff and 20% naughty shit.

They subscribe to the "always keep a snack handy" philosophy.

She's fat again on her carby breakfasts. I'm not.

Oh dear. lol. You see, the only thing that could sway me is their "fasting will slow your metabolism" argument. I need to read more research on that.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 29/04/2014 11:59

Back from gym. Did a core ball class, which was harder than I'd expected it to be. Weights, HIIT - all good.

FD going ok so far.

Orchard don't beat yourself up. Fasting goes against everything we're ever taught and I think it can take a while to adjust your subconscious thinking. Hang in there :)
