The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, ^combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BREASTFEEDERS: Start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: Is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast : If pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: If you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).

Thanks, Choc, I know I will!

Please don't beat yourself up about going over - it takes a little while to get into the swing of things sometimes.

Have a look through the tips on the Tips and Links thread - there's bound to be something on there to help.

Just re-read your post and I have to pick you up on something, I'm afraid!

You didn't 'fail'! You almost succeeded - and next time you will!

Banish the 'F' word from your dictionary! Grin

dizhin79 · 28/04/2014 20:10

ah well fd hasn't gone exactly to plan, have gone to about 1250 but (here comes the excuses....)have been on 2 dig walks and done some strength building exercises and have fed this 7week old loads abs have a feeling this will continue well into the night Confused

Chicaboooo · 28/04/2014 20:17

I think we all need to be kind to ourselves. It's hard enough to suddenly drop to eating 500 cals a day without having to cope with children, tiredness and work etc.

We will all get there in the end Smile.

veryseriousgirl · 28/04/2014 20:34

At the end of a v successful FD and now wanting to strangle DH. Just home from yoga and he has decided to make himself his supper now (not while I was out), and that he wants to eat bacon, which is currently frying and smelling wonderful.

I have been so disciplined today and the smell is about to make me start crying... Grrrrrrrrr.

womblesofwestminster · 28/04/2014 20:35

Right people. Assistance needed.

Today is Day 1 of my gym's 'Diet Challenge'. Every week the gym staff will weigh me and when 8 weeks are up, whoever has lost the most weight (measured as a % of your starting weight) will win goodies (facial, manicure and blowdry - not that I care that much about those).

So today I was given a 'diet pack'. You wouldn't believe the anti-fasting stuff inside Angry (See pic).

Every day I've got to fill in a diary of everything I eat. Do I lie or reveal my ADFing? Cast your votes!

The 5:2 Thread number 43: Had too much Easter chocolate? Is the sugar monster chasing you? Come and join us in kicking the carb-cravings and getting back to healthy eating habits with intermittent fas
veryseriousgirl · 28/04/2014 20:39

Wombles, I'd reveal your ADFing and direct the gym staff to some of the links in the first post. I am so pleased to be released from the tyranny of "you must eat breakfast, even if you don't feel hungry!"

HumphreyCobbler · 28/04/2014 20:40

reveal
they should learn better!

HumphreyCobbler · 28/04/2014 20:41

veryseriousgirl, I came home to the smell of bacon too. It was most annoying.

MetellaEstMater · 28/04/2014 20:44

I can't read the attachment on my phone unfortunately wombles but that's such a shame. My gym is really supportive of the 5:2 at least (don't know about ADF) and lots of the instructors do a LOF on a Monday. I'd probably log honestly just to prove that it works and you can maintain your exercise goals at the same time.

Good luck. If you don't want the facial I'll have it

Haha! veryserious my husband has just done the same thing - he is now on 6:1. I made him make me a sandwich to pop in the fridge then pop in the sandwich press when DDs get me up at some ungodly hour tomorrow. I will be dreaming of bacon.

Well said chica!

MetellaEstMater · 28/04/2014 20:44

What's with the bacon!? Grin

veryseriousgirl · 28/04/2014 20:46

Humphrey, DPs, eh?! Am taking BetsyBell's advice and MNing furiously to keep hands busy. May light a scented candle. Hmm

MetellaEstMater · 28/04/2014 20:47

dizhin. My four month old is either hitting regression or cutting her first tooth so I am with you in spirit!

veryseriousgirl · 28/04/2014 20:48

Metella - great idea! Will get my DP to do the same. Mmm. Bacon tomorrow.

womblesofwestminster · 28/04/2014 20:51

I'll reveal then Grin At the end of every week, I've got to hand in my food diary and the gym staff will 'mark it'. That'll be fun on this WOE Hmm

[Off-topic] What's the skinny with this smiley >>> Dragon Is it an ode to Benedict Cumberbatch? Grin

BetsyBell · 28/04/2014 20:59

It's so much easier when the DPs join in! Bacon is definitely a step too far and opening a bottle of wine is cruelty. My DH is now properly on a health kick and I've managed to get him from scoffing my nut supplies by telling him how many calories each handful was - he was literally throwing them in his mouth in handfuls, barely even tasting the delicious loveliness Shock At least savour them!

We can all have bacon and nuts tomorrow Grin

Not2bObvious · 28/04/2014 21:30

Grrr another shambolic attempted fast day, managed to even go over tdee! Flip it, I'll make another stab at it tomorrow. I managed til about 11 but then crumbled at pastries in the office, damn you crumbly/flakey delicious'nessSad And then ended up with takeaway for dinner. Oh lord, I'm possessed. Need a DIY jaw wiring!
Womble I can't read the plan thing, hmm not sure about confessing to Adf, then again not sure about faking food diary! On the fencewhich is digging into my greedy ass, touch of Adf would do me good

ErrolTheDragon · 28/04/2014 21:37

Dragon -
Left over from St George's day, not sure whether just by accident or at the behest of the considerable number of dragons who roam this site. Grin

ChocolateTwist · 28/04/2014 21:37

Breadandwine and BigChoc thank you so much for your kind messages. I am being hard on myself because I was feeling so good before I gave in and ate, and everyone here has made so much progress! The tips thread is really great though - I need to introduce more vegetables and remove the diet drinks for a start I think.
Veryseriousgirl, I'm in awe.
wombles please reveal! You have the scientific and anecdotal basis to win the argument, besides which it is deeply dubious for them to be pushing short term rapid weight loss instead of a long term way of life which you can reap the health benefits of while continuing to enjoy your life. 95% of short term diets fail - why are they still focusing on that and not something like more body fat lost or increased cardiovascular fitness over that time period?
How do you find ADF by the way? I would love to hear more about your experience of it, how you manage it, if you wouldn't mind? I'm interested in all of this :)
chica good point. I don't have children to deal with but I have a ton of work (and AF arrived unexpectedly as well). It is a big change, but I don't want to get in the habit of failing, there is a big psychological difference between having a successful fast day and just not eating a lot to me...

MazzleDazzle · 28/04/2014 21:41

Ate an almond slice from costa and 5 marshmallow bites today, which accounted for half of my TDEE, so I'm bloody hungry!

Bedsides that though, I've eaten healthily with lots of veg. and some cherries. Still have just under 100 cals left, but saving them for the weekend.

Was going to fast today as I love joining in with the Monday fasters. It makes the day pass quicker! It's my birthday today though and a friend invited me out for coffee, hence the almond slice, which was gone in 3 bites and nearly 500 cals!

Due back to work next month, but was in today for a meeting, hence the marshmallow bites. Was hoping for a reaction and was thrilled when someone said I look like a completely different person! The work trousers I wore today have only been on once beore - 3 months ago and I was squeezed into them - are now loose! Delighted but also gutted. Might take them to a taylor to get them altered.

I couldn't understand what the smiley was either Wombles!

Well done Monday fasters. You've nailed it!

MazzleDazzle · 28/04/2014 21:43

I ditched the diet drinks Choc and it really helped with my sweet cravings!

TalkinPeace · 28/04/2014 21:44

wombles
My gym has a healthy eating club too. When I lost a stone in a term the lady who runs it asked what I was doing and said "you'll gain it all back in a few weeks" - well that was 18 months ago.
She's fat again on her carby breakfasts. I'm not.

chocolate / very / metella
and all the others who are struggling with getting fasts back on track ....
simplify your success criteria a little
(a) do a no carb day on a fast day : eggs, fish, vegetables
(b) see how many hours you can go without food. Everything over 16 from the last bite of supper the night before is a success
(c) see whether you can stall hunger with lots of non fizzy drinks

if you keep to those three, the 500 calories will drop into place
but the pattern is more important than the number

MazzleDazzle · 28/04/2014 21:46

Not2 I'll give fasting tomorrow a go to if you want company? I lasted til 1pm today then ate an almond slice.

When I first started this WOL I never had a failed FD! It seems to be a regular occurrence now!

BetsyBell · 28/04/2014 21:55

I've reached the stage in the fast day evening where my stomach sounds like it's trying to digest an elk. Shhh stomach, you're scaring the cat.

Time for bed I think, if I can sleep through all the growling that is...

OP posts:
Not2bObvious · 28/04/2014 22:03

You're on Mazzle - I have got to get back on track!! I was same as you for ages, no failed fd's but the last few weeks (ok monthsBlush) I don't know what is wrong with me.
Water water water til lunch, then egg/chicken salad, steak for dinner, more water water water. Excited nowGrin

BigChocFrenzy · 28/04/2014 22:27

Happy Birthday, Mazzle
Of course you were entitled to go over TDEE today !
You'll compensate later in the week, I'm sure

Those struggling with FDs: Next time, how about a veggy omelette for lunch, with a lean protein & salad for supper ?
