The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, ^combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

I have 2 bikes to ensure one is always available, but the Demon Murphy struck:
One bike was in for its booked annual service, when the other bike developed braking problems.
Confused

The bike shop has a long waiting list atm because of the fair-weather cyclists all wanting a pre-season tuneup.

However, yesterday I spotted they have a lovely demonstration model reduced by 2k, which I'll buy on Tuesday if it is as good as it looks.
That'll be 3 bikes just for me, my late Easter egg on wheels

I organised where I live, work and play, so that all my routes are along cycle lanes / quiet roads / offroad.
I cycle because it's healthy and I enjoy it, so I need to feel safe - the bod doesn't bounce at my age.

Off to bed now after a successful FD with fasted training. So, back on track now. I hope any other fasters were successful too.

I quite enjoy most FDs. Am I weird or does anyone else find this ?
Confused Hmm
I definitely wouldn't if I had more than 1 or 2 FDs per week, though.

Hi Everyone,

apologies for falling off the planet, the site our caravan is on has zero net coverage unless you pay for WiFi accessAngry
We started Easter Sunday with treasure hunt that led us from Wisbech to London via my work and am now sitting eating breakfast at Disneyland Paris. Kids loved all the clues, halved the amount of chocolate they got (although expensive way to do it!)
Didn't work out where we were until we walked out of the station next to the parks.
score!!!! Feeling like epic parents, they decided between them we had to stay 2 days as long as we get to see Uncle Disney Dan (long time friend of ours who works here) then we can go home.
We checked in and then said, not going home tomorrow, or the day after we can go home on Thursday. the hype kept them going until 11pm.
Going to aim for 16:8ish and wing it!!

Have a great week

BetsyBell · 21/04/2014 07:46

Right. Stating my intentions: no wine or sugar today. Enough us enough.

Easy to say that at 7.48am Wink

magicalrealistmum · 21/04/2014 07:56

Morning all
Hope you have had a lovely Easter and enjoyed the choc!
Struggling a bit to keep to TDEE on NFD, but back on FD today.
first one at home, normally at work so not so tempted, I aim to keep busy sorting out wardrobe and will go and get all planned and drinks ready. Good luck all others on FD today

Not2bObvious · 21/04/2014 08:43

Morning all! Hugely busy yesterday, it kept me off the thread and in the kitchen. Got my house lovely and clean for my visitors. The kids loved their Easter egg hunt and the we had a great family lunch with fab leg of lamb. Not a clue how much was eaten but it really was a one meal day chased by wine/Easter egg
I am going to hide the scales away again now I've c

Not2bObvious · 21/04/2014 08:47

...Stupid phone!!! As I was saying, now I've done my post lent WI I'm going to put the scales away again and plod on. I'm going to stick to no alcohol Monday-Thursday, might add chocolate and crisps into that too. Also going to keep to low alcohol/small amounts. I did not miss my hangover migraines. I think it's time to listen to my body's message to me, can't deal with 2 day hangovers and the damage it's doing to my life/body. Work trip away this week, soft drinks all the wayGrin Anyone any good intentions for the week ahead?

BetsyBell · 21/04/2014 08:56

not2 yes, I'm back on the weekday wagon. Nutritious food only and no booze! Less likely to go nuts at the weekend if I've not set off the sugar monster during the week.

I've woken up with the grotty feeling that only comes with over-doing sugar and Wine. And plenty of mouth ulcers too.

Healthy choices only!

mummyof2girlsx · 21/04/2014 08:59

Sounds like we have all enjoyed Easter with some lovely treats and Wine

My plan was to get back to normal today with a Monday fast, but I've been invited to family for lunch.......can't decide if I should go and fast tomorrow or decline the offer and fast as planned.....hmmm decisions!

Good luck to anyone fasting today Smile

Helliecopter · 21/04/2014 09:00

Morning all. Happy EasterEaster Grin

Was too busy to post yesterday. We hosted an Easter BBQ/party for my mum's birthday and I had a lot to do. Started cooking at 7:30am!

Yeah I am a bit of a baking demon - but yesterday I had the worse cake disaster in my history. I used self raising instead of plain flour in the cake I was making for Mum's birthday...and I'd made a double mix so I could make some cupcakes for the kids. Very explosive recipe and it was a complete cake wreck! I had to bin everything (heartbreaking) and send DH out for more eggs so I could bake again. But eventually the cake was a winner, cupcakes turned out fine, Simnel cake was okay (the fruit still sunk!)...

Made some lovely salads (BCF actually cooking rice and lentils from scratch Wink) that will be easily adaptable to FD meals. If you haven't tried red (Camargue) rice, I highly recommend it. It's a brown rice that's a lovely dark red colour and really tasty. Had it with green beans, courgettes and crumbled feta.

BBQ was a success overall, everyone had a lovely time and the kids enjoyed it. I hardly ate any chocolate! (Small NSV) Half of a small hollow egg-hunt egg, that was it! I did make up for it in bread, wine, salads and meat. Didn't even attempt to count the calories but we all need days like that sometimes. Quite a lot of leftovers today (understatement!) but I'm going to try to ignore them and have a FD. Not sure it'll pan out, but I've skipped breakfast and will see how the day progresses.

tigger Loving the treasure hunt! Brilliant.

Betsy Very good luck with the no wine or sugar. Have you managed the first hour yet?! Wink

BigChoc and Megrim My DH is a very keen cyclist (4 bikes and counting) and I'm a lycra widow! He commutes to work as well as loves doing big rides whenever he can. I have a nice bike that sits in the loft. I keep meaning to get it out and build up my confidence (had a bad fall a couple of years ago) but keep putting it off. I just asked DH to get it down and check it over so I might have a little ride later!

Bingeremma · 21/04/2014 09:11

Ahhhhhhhhh!!!!
Today has turned into three hot cross buns with about 400 cals worth of butter noooo!
I must must must fast tomorrow I am so fat and ugly at the moment :(
Just going to wait until dinner now and eat that and then that is that for today, may have a banana after if I really need it.
Tomorrow I will fast I am so addicted to food :(

DorisAllTheDay · 21/04/2014 10:26

Hello everyone - I'm back! I'm all filled up with fresh air and sunshine and gorgeous views and healthy hill-walking... and much, much too much food. In particular I got myself into the way of huge breakfasts which has meant exercising a lot of willpower this morning to stop myself from diving into Sainsburys and buying up the bakery section. But I had a lovely time, and I didn't worry at all about eating while I was away, telling myself that a few weeks of IF-ing would sort any damage. Now I have to prove that to myself by jumping straight back onto the wagon, so today's an FD. I'm on my fifth cup of tea already - I've decided to allow 350 calories for food and unlimited tea with milk to keep the hunger pangs at bay.

I haven't had time to catch up with the thread yet. I hope everyone's doing OK and those who've been holiday have had good times. Emma, I completely understand being addicted to food as I most certainly am. But is telling yourself that you're fat and ugly at the moment going to help? You may be overweight (I don't know as I don't remember your height/weight stats) but you're almost certainly not ugly, and the word 'fat' as an adjective has very negative connotations for most of us. I don't know how it works for you, but I know that for me and many others, giving myself negative messages about being fat and ugly just makes me feel bad (or even worse) and works against me doing anything constructive about my eating. It's when I tell myself that I deserve to have a fit, healthy body that I can motivate myself to get back on the wagon after the umpteenth fall.

Megrim · 21/04/2014 10:40

Hellie I've told DH it's now a case of one bike goes before another one comes in! I have a good mountain bike with hybrid tyres, so ideal for roads and tracks, and a new racing bike that I haven't tested properly yet - it was a bargain but is slightly on the large size for me, and very twitchy compared to the off reader.

Doris hopefully you walked off those breakfasts every day?

Emma you're not fat, but the buns will make you feel bloated I bet. Be positive - you can do it!

Megrim · 21/04/2014 10:41

Blerdy phone off roader not off reader.

BetsyBell · 21/04/2014 10:42

Hellie I'm still holding strong on no wine or sugar! Tea and coffee only so far. DH is clearly feeling the same as said "shall we fast today" - I said let's aim to just eat nutritiously - easier to not fall off the wagon and dive into the easter eggs.

Planning butternut squash soup for later, and possibly some grapefruit and banana and nuts when needed.

At the very least it will be a 16:8 at mini-fast levels, and maybe better - I think that's pretty good for a bank holiday.

CiderwithBuda · 21/04/2014 10:42

Hi everyone.

Wise words Doris.

Ten days till I go to New York so I'm planning ten days of no alcohol, sugar or wheat. So far so good but it is still early! Also planning drinking lots of water as I have been very bad at that recently.

I had the weekend off being good. Had friends over for a BBQ on Saturday and I drank far too much wine. And ate too much as well of course. Yesterday continued the thread of course. Hot cross buns, dessert, more wine, bread and a roast dinner. Was conscious of quantities though which is good for me. As I was serving dinner i consciously served myself less than normal as I wanted to have room for dessert. Plate normally as heaped as DH's but it wasn't yesterday.

Back at it today and am currently drinking my green smoothie.

Happy fasting for those doing it. I'm not sure yet what I'm doing! Might be a mini fast.

BigChocFrenzy · 21/04/2014 10:55

Morning all - having usual Monday FD, just done my exercise DVD. Probably go for a walk later but all this talk of bikes is making me want to get mine out... it's a bit buried in the garage at the moment. We're having the loft boarded this week, after which we'll have a garage sort-out and I must make sure my bike ends up more easily accessible.

On my usual black coffee and water...could do with another coffee.

Emma - as you're quite similar height and weight to me I checked your BMI - you are the slightest smidgin over the healthy range so really, you aren't fat, you just have a bit of fat. You can deal with the bingeing - there are people here who know all about it who will help.
Maybe start by identifying what tends to set off a binge? ... if it's buns then just don't buy them, or put all but one straight in the freezer.

Tigger wow, you are epic parents, that sounds awesome!

BigChocFrenzy · 21/04/2014 11:01

Emma You have some weight to lose, but you are NOT ugly.
You have started 5:2 to take back control. Be patient and be proud of yourself.
Easter Smile
Hellie I bought a pack of Camargue rice several years ago, because it looked lovely, but it stayed 5 years unopened in my larder, so I binned it. You've inspired me to have another go. Do you just rinse it and then boil for 20 mins ?

When I cleared out my freezer yesterday, I binned a beef joint, lamb chops, fillet steak and entrecôte because they were more than 6 months old.
I must stop buying raw meat, because I'm ashamed of such waste when some people are struggling. It's disgraceful.
Blush Angry
I'm almost teetotal, but I'll join Betsy, Not2b, cider on abstaining from choc and baked goods from Mon-Thur for the rest of April.
Strange, I was very good over Xmas-New Year, but have really over-indulged over Easter.
Easter Hmm
I think it is because Easter has now stretched to 2 weeks and I didn't plan any FDs whereas I did ADF over Xmas to maintain.

5:2 can cope with a layoff, but in future I'll restrict that to when I'm holidaying with friends AND I'll prepare for it by ensuring I start at my lower weight range.

hello, I am slinking in to report that I too have vastly over eaten. Am planning a fast day tomorrow but I have to eat my easter egg first

I am recovered from my cold though! Well done to all those back on the wagon today.

Breadandwine · 21/04/2014 11:54

I binned a beef joint, lamb chops, fillet steak and entrecôte because they were more than 6 months old.

BC, that meat would have been perfectly alright! You should only throw away stuff if it looks and/or smells bad.

Emma, The guys are right you know - you're a little overweight, is all! And you can fix that! Smile

Instead of snacking on a banana, which is full of sugar, why not have a raw mushroom or a couple of cherry tomatoes?

I usually fast on a Monday, but since I've half of a Free From Easter egg to finish off, I'll wait until tomorrow. I've just rescued said egg from the top of a cupboard, where I slung it last night to prevent me eating the lot!

It's going back up there in a minute! Grin

Oh, and I've also got a quarter of the mango kuchen left plus half a trifle. Maybe I'll fast on Wednesday! Grin

Southeastdweller · 21/04/2014 11:57

emma What do you think the obsession about food is all about then, deep-down?

MrsFlorrick · 21/04/2014 12:05

Hello everyone (waves) Grin

Breadandwine. I will make that trifle for DH. He loves the stuff. Grin

Emma. Noooo. You're not! And if your BMI is more or less in the healthy range, you've not got much to lose so it won't take long.

When you stand staring into the abyss of having to lose 6+ for the second time in only two years (thanks children btw!), it feels impossible. Completely and utterly impossible.

Yet here I am. I've done it and I've done it twice in a short space of time.

You do it 1lb at a time. And at the outset I thought I'd be happy if I lost say 4 stone (taking me into healthy BMI zone but still much bigger than inused to be).

Once I got there, I suddenly thought I might lose one more stone. (Was doing Dukan diet at this point and fell off wagon and regained 2 stone over 3 months Blush).

So in January 2013, I was fat again and still had quite a bit to lose.

So I low carbed for 6 months and then started 5:2. And Febuary 2014, I was back at pre pregnacy weight and BMI around 21. Grin

It wasn't that hard and I went all the way. Back to where I thought I'd never ever be.

And you can all do it! Oh yes you can.
I am generally seriously lacking in will power. Grin So if I can manage this you all can too.

And someone called me skinny the other day. Grin That's not happened in a long time.

Don't give up and do t worry about eating a couple of hot cross buns. You can have a good FD tomorrow.
Or if you've only had 400 cals today, then have a mini fast and don't eat again till dinner time.

TIPs no snacking rule is the business. I'm a terrible snacker and grazer or rather used to be. No more.
The days I go over TDEE and over eat, are always days I've snacked.
Doesn't happen when I just eat proper meals.

Bigchoc. It's so hard not to over shop on food. I find it takes serious meal planning even with gluttonous bottomless pit children and DH, I have to watch what's bought and make sure I plan or stuff ends up getting chucked which is such a criminal waste.

For the record, I hate meal planning. I like to be spontaneous. But it can't be done really.

Best advice is to plan and be able to swap meals around. Ie that cod you had planned for Wednesday night, have it Tuesday instead and have the Tuesday meal on Weds instead. Use by dates allowing obv. Only way I manage it.

Oh and left overs for lunch where possible. Ie roast chicken salad (sandwich w roast chick for DC). That sort of thing.

Breadandwine · 21/04/2014 12:17

And never forget, guys, this WOL is not just for weight loss - so even if the scales are not moving, by IFing you're still doing yourself a power of good.

Here's Dr Miriam Stoppard in this morning's DM:

Monday 21st April 2014
Dr Miriam Stoppard, in her health column in the Daily Mirror had this to say about Intermittent Fasting (I've tried to find this online, but it doesn't appear to be there yet):
"I'm keen on Intermittent Fasting. It's very efficient and doesn't only help you to lose weight, it also prolongs your life.
"It works by increasing your sensitivity to insulin - a very good thing - so it controls your appetite and gets rid of cravings.
"It protects you from heart disease and diabetes, too, and should you need chemo for a malignancy (heaven forbid) it makes your tumour more sensitive to the treatment programme.
"All in all, a good thing."
