The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, ^combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Last night I went snack mental. I rarely evening snack and I just couldn't stop. Ended up going to bed to get away from the food. Shock

Not2bObvious · 19/04/2014 22:34

Oh oh - just rediscovered chocolate...see y'all in 20 pounds timeGrin Only kidding although I have had a good whack of it! Surprisingly I've been very relaxed around wine, 2.5 glasses, then went onto water. Big family day tomorrow, cooking lunch for 6, so it's going to be v busy, 2 Easter egg hunts to prepare - have to make sure I don't eat the eggs as I put them outBlush 16:8 will probably work well.
Ooh loving this weekend! Great weather so far, happy kids, family fun - good timesSmile

EagleRay · 20/04/2014 00:45

Hello from other side of the Atlantic! V tricky journey here as both DD and me have a nasty bug :-( Poor DD vommed/and worse nonstop on 10 hour flight then on 5 hour local bus journey I started puking like it's going out of fashion.

Still v weak and feverish and haven't eaten for 24 hrs - DD seems bright and cheery but still has D&V. So all my plans for holiday FDs have gone out of the window - at least for time being...

Have a lovely Easter weekend everyoneSmile

Breadandwine · 20/04/2014 01:05

Hells bells, EagleRay!! What a nightmare!

Wishing you and DD a speedy recovery! (((hugs)))

Plenty of time for FDs when you're fit and well again.

Darkhorsefor1 · 20/04/2014 04:59

Ooh eagle, how deeply unpleasant for you and dd. Hope you're better soon and can enjoy the rest of your hols. At least that's one less fast to do.

eats nice anniversary post. A year already, that's flown by!

not2obvs that's a pretty tidy scales and tape measure result. And its off for good with 5:2 because its sustainable. Better than quick off quick on. Was that first taste of choc really nice? Too nice!

metal 2 day hangovers! Awful aren't they. But, in my experience they happen when I'm on a losing streak. Up here on plateauville I can drink relatively unaffected. I've had 2 day hangovers off 2 tiny glasses of wine, even hurling up the next day all very sad and pitiful. I hate to admit this, but I'm coming round to the realisation that I feel much better drink free. Wake up brighter, less weary through the day. Eat less. I would need to find an alternative to drink when socializing, hmm maybe sparkling water, I love that.

BetsyBell · 20/04/2014 11:01

Rediscovered chocolate not2? So have I - planning Tuesday as a strict cut off date for all naughty treats (chocolate, booze, hot cross buns) until I've got back in to the habit of being sensible.

So far today I've eaten a HCB, a small bit of left over stir fry and a thornton's small praline-filled egg. And there'll be a big family lunch in a couple of hours. Easter Blush

I'm not weighing in for a while, I know it's not going to be pretty. Lack of exercise and over-indulging (not frenzying, but just generally in 'holiday' mode) has left me flabby and tiny ring is already starting to feel tight again - what a difference a week makes!

Sorry to hear about the vom-fest eagle, I hope you both feel better soon.

MrsFlorrick · 20/04/2014 11:14

Hi everyone. Happy Easter GrinThanks

Welcome Pannacotta. (Love pannacotta so yummy Wink).

5:2 will help you reassess what you eat and how often. Helps you really work out where your pitfalls are.

Also helps you shift the last few lbs and keep them off.

For the new people who don't know me (not been here much lately sorryBlush). I am at goal weight (pre pregnancy weight. BMI just under 21).

Since DS was born 2.8 years ago, I've lost over 6 stone (close to 7 Blush).
Never overweight prior to DC but severe insulin resistance and gestational diabetes made me faaaaat.

I didn't lose it all with 5:2 but importantly it was the last couple of stone which were almost impossible to shift. And keeping it off. Grin

And best of all its actually easy. There is no special food, no forbidden food and no "wagon" to fall off. If you eat over on a given day, you just have an extra FD or eat under TDEE another. The FDs after you reach goal will help you stay there whilst enjoying the weekend treat (Wine Grin).

I'm still maintaining nicely. I've not lost weight but I've lost about 1% body fat recently. (Estimated. It's hard to measure exactly for body fat).

Went jeans shopping in Selfridges on Friday. I had picked up 29s in J Brand, Paige, Hudson. They were all far too big. As were most of the 28s I tried on. But that was vanity sizing for sure.
I came in wearing a pair of size 29, 7 for all mankind which are 10 years old and they fit.

I bought a pair of size 29 Rag & Bone as they fitted best (and clearly weren't vanity sized as assistants were telling everyone to size up as they were big Hmm).

Anyway just saying with 5:2, you'll get there and stay there Grin
And listen to TIP about no snacking eva innit and Bigchoc about HIIT workouts.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/04/2014 11:31

Poor EagleRay, what a miserable Easter hols. I just read the gruesome details in your Chat thread

What happened to some of us this Easter ?
^^

Well, both my bikes have been in bike hospital undergoing major surgery and both gyms cancelled too many classes for me to be motivated to walk.

So, I've had 2 weeks with very little exercise, while mainlining choc goodies from our dangerously delicious local bakery - and then I bought 5 jars of mixed nut butter .....
-without exercise I revert to chronic bookworm mode (literally nonstop 16 hours, several books per day) and I munch to exercise my jaws.

I read until 5am this morning - again ! - so I'm not waiting until Tuesday:
Today AND Tuesday will be FDs and the rest of the week will be healthy eating and bed at 11pm. That should correct the damage.

Bike and gyms return to normal service Tuesday, so I shall too.

Right now, I need to stagger to the kitchen for caffeine

Happy Easter everyone Easter Smile

Just had the most fab breakfast at home - eggs scrambled in a tiny bit of coconut oil, with Gruyere cheese and organic sundried tomatoes, then some coconut and raspberry chocolate washed down with fresh coffee and also had an oat and fruit hot cross bun. A mini-fast yesterday turned into a normal fast so that should accommodate today's splurge and I'm going for a workout later after a local Mexican lunch. Similar food and activity planned for tomorrow. Even after over a year of 5:2 it still feels great knowing what to do to counteract potential weight gain. MrsF is right about 5:2 being easy if you stick to it.

ErrolTheDragonsEgg · 20/04/2014 11:48

Happy Easter everyone!
I had a rest day yesterday - evening meal of roast beef etc, lots of veg and not too many roasties, a bit of red wine (DH can't drink much because of his meds. so only half the bottle between us). Yum. This morning went out for a little run ... walked to the canal, started jogging and went further than I've ever gone before ... then 'sprint'/walk intervals back. 6.5 km in total which means that (discounting the walk to/from the canal) at last I've made it to 5k Grin.

Then back for late brekkie while listening to the Archers omnibus... almond milk mochas, half a grapefruit, slice of buttered wholemeal and six boiled eggs in honour of the day. Quails eggs! Grin

ErrolTheDragonsEgg · 20/04/2014 12:03

Sorry, had to nip out mid-post...
would like to say welcome to Pannacotta and BingerEmma. I'm a short (5'1") just over 9st, 53 yo with PCOS ... 5:2 plus regular exercise has changed scales creeping up to nibbling down. I don't know if there's hard evidence about hormones, but a bit before I started this WOL, my GP caught up with the fact that I was over 50 and therefore shouldn't be on the pill which had been keeping my hormones in order. Since then - honestly no idea what stage of peri/post meno I might be but as I'm fit and healthy with no obvious symptoms, my feeling is that 5:2 and exercise combo is very beneficial for me. Hope you find the same. Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 20/04/2014 12:10

Yes, 5:2 works and can cope with holiday over-indulgence too.
Just get right back on it. I'll be back to normal in a week.
I'm actually looking forward to my 2 FDs (I maintain on one FD).

I schedule an exercise break every 2-3 months, but I've now learned not to combine it with holiday and no bikes !

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 20/04/2014 12:14

Well done on the 5k Errol, great NSV !
Think how far you have progressed with exercise during 5:2
Those Big Girl pressups will happen too, another milestone to look forward to.

OP posts:
Pannacotta · 20/04/2014 12:18

Thanks MrsFLorrick and well done on your weight loss. How is your diabetes now?

Southeast your brekkie sounds delicious, has made my tummy rumble. No fasting for me this weekend!

Eatriskier · 20/04/2014 12:24

After my mega binge, an over day and potentially an over day today I definitely concur that it's wonderful knowing I have the tools to counteract the naughtiness. That peace of mind is truly rocking.

ErrolTheDragonsEgg · 20/04/2014 13:16

Think how far you have progressed with exercise during 5:2

Too right... all the squats/lunges in the shred/ripped (plus some extra ATGs now and then), plus carrying a bit less weight mean my legs don't even feel tired which they would definitely have done before.

Also, though quite a lot was 'moderate' I wasn't particularly hungry when I got back - if I hadn't been wanting to have an excuse to loiter in the kitchen listening to The Archers try the quails eggs I might easily have not bothered till lunch... doing it that way round with the HIIT half second maybe a good plan?

postmanpatscat · 20/04/2014 13:22

Happy Easter to you all Easter Smile

Haven't started on the Easter eggs yet (but will v soon!) So far I've had a 5 mile run and a small glass of chocolate milk and one Smartie!

I've lost 2lbs of my off-the-wagon weight gain in the last four days so I'm pleased with that. Another 3lbs puts me firmly back in the maintenance zone.

Well done on your run Errol

BigChocFrenzy · 20/04/2014 13:58

Errol Yes, most folk gain the appetite suppression (and metabolism benefits) even when HIIT is only part of the whole session.
I often recommend runners just to add some sprint intervals to their hour.

My HIIT is sometimes short sets of very heavy lifting with 1-2 min breaks. I usually finish with 5 mins sprints or skipping plus a brief walk outside to chill.

OP posts:
Pannacotta · 20/04/2014 14:18

Thanks Errol
Am 43 so not near menopause yet but suffering with hormonal stuff so am hoping the 5:2 will help, I already exercise quite a lot.
Not so keen on the belly fat though and I know its the least healthy place to put on weight.
Must go slow on the vino and chocs, hard at Easter!

ErrolTheDragonsEgg · 20/04/2014 14:28

BC - good! well, I think that'll be my running method from now on - trot out as far as I feel like going (or half the available time) and then do intervals back. There's always the half mile walk to warm/cool down.

Bingeremma · 20/04/2014 14:48

Well today has turned into another binge :(
Three hm hot cross buns with lots of butter (one with hm jam)
Then a whole bar of Lindts dark chocolate and two creme eggs.
Beef stew and veg for dinner. If I must have dessert I will have a piece of fruit- pretty full up now though.
Tomorrow I am round my mums for late lunch around three so will not eat before that.
Then Tuesday a 16:8 at work. I have a portion of spag Bol mince in a container in the fridge from yesterday so will have that--- and a healthy dinner at home
Wednesday is a fd!!
Dh laughs at me because I only toast my hot cross bun for 30 seconds I don't like the butter melting too much on it so I barely so mine and he has his black.
Happy Easter everyone!!
South east your breakfast sounds wonderfully bet you enjoyed it.
Eroll I really have gone off eggs of later. Don't know why used to love them..

Off on holiday to corfu in two weeks so trying to loose some weight before then .

Breadandwine · 20/04/2014 15:28

Decided to treat myself to a trifle today (vegan, of course) - something I would never have considered pre-5:2!

Making the sponge in the microwave makes this a quick and easy dish to assemble:
Make cake
Add boiling water to jelly crystals and stir
Place sponge in bowl, add slices of banana (other fruits are available)
Pour jelly into dish and leave for a bit
Spread Alpro custard over the set jelly and serve with a pouring of soya cream (which is all I've got).

Dead easy - and only 150 cals if you're counting. I've put the recipe on the 5:2 thread.

I'll probably eat the lot today - luckily my wife dislikes trifle! Grin

Eatriskier · 20/04/2014 19:00

Dh got me a lovely posh white choc egg for easter. I've had half and my tummy has gone funny again. Seems like white choc has too much milk in for this lactose intolerant lady and nothing to do with the milk choc I've consumed the last few days either of course. Not that I'm going to waste it. I shall finish it and deal with feeling ill later, safe in the knowledge that I can eat my posh dark choc without fear of flare ups.

Oh well, tomorrow I shall fast it out of my system

Megrim · 20/04/2014 22:50

BigChoc bad planning to have both bikes out of actio at the same time. I have a lovely shiny new racing bike to get going on, but it's bloody twitchy compared to my mountain bike so I'm a bit hesitant about going out on the local death traps roads.

I am the female version of a MAMIL - middle aged mum on Lycra.
