The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, ^combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Oh gum, how very sad...((big big hugs)).

lucyintheskywithdinos · 16/04/2014 08:57

I can go up 3lbs after a couple of days of alcohol/carbs but they come off after one FD.

I'm on a NFD today, planning to spend the day lounging and playing in the garden then I have a date tonight!

Good luck to those fasting today!

BetsyBell · 16/04/2014 08:59

Since I posted so jubilantly a few days ago I merrily switched to 'holiday' mode, failed to fast instead deciding wine is nice, and so are ice creams and chocolate.

Attempting to get a foothold on the wagon today, in preparation for more of the same over the bank holiday! Not holding out a huge amount of hope for today re. 500 calories, but have plans for a nice dinner to stop me reaching for the sugary frozen goods at least.

Not likely to see that record low again for a while but the tiny ring still fits so that's ok Grin

Darkhorsefor1 · 16/04/2014 09:00

Btw, gum there's been an outbreak if name changes, so people aren't who they were. Plus several regulars have gone MIA.

Hope everyones ok.

It's never occurred to me before that the carb monster and the drink monster are related. So obvious! You get one, you get t'other.

Darkhorsefor1 · 16/04/2014 09:02

That t'other was for hurrricane. How do.

Darkhorsefor1 · 16/04/2014 09:04

Welcome back to the dark side betsy. How many times have you looked at that ring on your finger?!

BetsyBell · 16/04/2014 09:19

The dark side of the carb'n'vino monster darkhorse! Yup, I'm there Grin. Attempted a fast yesterday - managed no booze but the hot cross bun was unavoidable, and it went downhill from there.

Ring is very sparkly thank you and has received lots of gratuitous polishing. Was contemplating getting one of those jewellers microscope thingies to look at it close up!

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 16/04/2014 09:20

NFD for me today, FD tomorrow Smile

I haven't weighed myself after starting, just going by how my clothes feel (much looser!) - as I'm putting muscle on so the number on the scales isn't going to mean much.

NFDs I seem to be eating anywhere from 1400-2000 cals, depending on how I feel on the day, but probably averaging around 1600.

Bimblepops · 16/04/2014 09:20

Hello all,
I'm starting 5:2 today.
Plan is no breakfast, maybe 150cal lunch (miso soup and broccoli with ponzu dressing) and then sweet potato & chorizo stew for dinner (350 cals).
I'm 5'4", size 14 bottom and 12 top. Weighed in at 12.4.4 this morning (digital scales). Bra size 34E. Can measure myself as my kids have hidden my measuring tape!
I need to lose two stone and I need to make my husband STFU!

Megrim · 16/04/2014 09:30

Hello Bimble, your planned FD sounds good - remember to drink lots of water too. Nip out and get yourself a new measuring tape, it's great when you see the inches disappearing.

Oh, and tell hubby to get on the scales himself - that always silences my one, he hasn't weighed himself in years!

Megrim · 16/04/2014 09:31

Wasn't zed moving house around this time? Might explain the MIA.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 16/04/2014 09:43

Morning everyone. Some of you might remember me from last year, I lost about a stone on 5:2 but it all went back on again and more over the winter!

I started again a couple of weeks ago, and I've lost 5 pounds. :)

Yesterday was a FD, did really well and I think came in at around 400 cals.

Current weight - 196.6 pounds.

I really want to get back into some exercise, I have done nothing properly for almost 18 months now which is shocking and I have got very unfit. Not good.

bimble that sounds like a good plan for the day, and Angry at your husband. Even he is some kind of Adonis it is not on to have a go at your about your weight.

Gumblossom I'm so sorry about your loss Thanks

MazzleDazzle · 16/04/2014 09:48

I'm so sorry Gum. What a tough time you must have had. Thanks Good luck with today's FD, but don't be too hard on yourself if you're finding it tough.

Thank you for the welcome back folks. After yesterday's FD the scales are going back in the right direction. Still another 7lb to shift to get to pre-holiday weight Blush.

Finally gotten round to watching the Horizon prog. last night. It really helped remind me why I am doing this: for health and longevity.

I love NYC Buda! Lucky you. Last time I went was years ago and I ate, ate, ate, so you're doing well to try and shift some pounds before you go.

A date Lucy? Do tell!

Welcome Bimble and good luck! Remember to drink, drink, drink!

You're right Megrim, I'm sure zed was moving.

Haven't broken yesterday's fast yet. Of to the gym, then college later, so it'll be afternoon before I get a chance to eat anything. Looking forward to roast veg. lasagne for dinner. Yum!

Helliecopter · 16/04/2014 10:47

Welcome back mazzle and (((Gumblossom)))

FD today for me. Yesterday's NFD was a bit chocolate-heavy but within TDEE. I somehow need to calm down on the first day after a FD. It's like a demon possesses me. I know exactly what I am doing but I can't bloody stop! I need to choose my poison and just enjoy it rather than cram guiltily. Hmm. Strategy required.

TMI warning Does anyone regularly eat fresh grapefruit? I love them, and I had one for breakfast yesterday, but by the later afternoon it had gone straight through me, with violent effects Blush and terrible wind too. They haven't affected me that badly in the past...

Oh...and I got a bit sunburnt on my back yesterday!

Good luck fellow fasters. I woke up really hungry this morning but thanks to my beloved Pukka tea I'm still foodless. Cauliflower soup for lunch. Dinner TBC!

HumphreyCobbler · 16/04/2014 11:09

Hello, checking in for a fast day today. Woke up in a filthy mood as didn't get any much sleep. Still I feel fine now though and have achieved an enormous amount already today.

So sorry for your loss Gumblossom Flowers

Gumblossom · 16/04/2014 11:45

Wow, I am (happily) overwhelmed by your lovely hugs and good wishes. It is so lovely to have such support. Thank you so much Thanks

I am surprisingly ok about the loss, unfortunately I am getting used to it. I suppose I steal myself for disappointment as I know I am pushing it, ttc at my age (47).But I have been ttc since I was 42 (after having a son at 41) and have hoped against hope that I'd have a little playmate for DS (I do have other children, but they are all much older than DS). Anyway, this is my fourth loss, and it was quite early, so not as tough as the first two losses I had towards the end of the first trimester. I am still optimistic, but also realistic.

Anyway, I felt so good on 5:2 before the pregnancy, so I'm back. And today was surprisingly okay. I managed to eat nothing until about 2 pm, then I had a small piece of gluten free bread and some miso soup. DD is now making sushi for the family, and I am famished - can't wait. I think I can even have a bit of rice, as miso and one small slice of bread would come in under 150 calories I think? I will check it on MFP.

So, can someone give me the heads up on name changes? Do I know you from before, Darkhorse?

womblesofwestminster · 16/04/2014 12:08

Oh bloody hell. Hand-holding required!!

I was supposed to be going on a night out on Friday to celebrate a massive achievement. I hardly ever 'go out on the town' so I dug out a dress I haven't worn since 2007, and it wouldn't zip up :( It fitted perfectly back then. MASSIVE wakeup call. I've never felt so fat.

Miffytastic · 16/04/2014 13:06

:stern voice: Wombles - you are still going on this night out you hear me? just because you're larger than you were in 2007 don't let this ruin your night out celebrating a big acheivement! You are taking action to get back to the size you want to be and just think how great it'll feel when it zips up again.

I'm on a FD today, think I might try to do 3 this week as don't want to fast next week on holiday. Though was contemplating doing 16:8 whilst away.

Miffytastic · 16/04/2014 13:14

Sorry, missed out Thanks to Gumblossom

HumphreyCobbler · 16/04/2014 13:32

don't be discouraged Wombles - remember that you are on track to get back into that dress.

Hope you have a lovely evening out.

I made the mistake of trying on my pre-pregnancy bra today. It was like putting an egg cup on a grapefruit Grin.

I am enjoying this fast day, but I always do up to the point of eating my meal in the evening, when I find it much much harder.

Southeastdweller · 16/04/2014 13:44

Welcome back Gum and sorry to hear about your loss. Do you think that rice and bread you're planning on having may make you hungry after?

Welcome back Mazzle. Could you please post that lasagne recipe?

Alibaba I remember you from last year and well done for losing so much in two weeks.

Wombles You'd better still be going on Friday night.

A crap nights sleep again means I'm craving carbs and sugar. But at least I skipped breakfast and will probably go to the gym again tonight. Weather is nice but I'm feeling too grumpy to do anything...I guess I'll take a walk to Tate Modern if it's not busy with screaming rugrats

Helliecopter · 16/04/2014 13:51

Eh up darkhorse
I also speak northern Wink

Darkhorsefor1 · 16/04/2014 14:11

My bras are the otherway round, like a golf ball in sock! I think I will end up with floppy flaps for boobs.

gum used to be peplum41, the night shift poster, loses one pound every 3 months and regularly eats back deficit. Still here there though. I seem to recall you're Australian.

helli loved your comment about "calming down" on first NFD. If you find a strategy let me know.

humphrey I really miss that enjoying fds thing. I endure them more these days and they keep getting demoted to 16:8s etc. Ultra determined today.

wombles its disappointing, I know. But I bet when you get dolled up for your night out you get loads of compliments.

14:10 is the darkside holidayers choice miffy. 16:8 ok for the traveling days.

I haven't had a grapefruit for ages. Don't they contain something that helps you burn fat? I'm sure Dr m mentions it in his book, but I've lent it to a friend.

womblesofwestminster · 16/04/2014 14:16

I made the mistake of trying on my pre-pregnancy bra today. It was like putting an egg cup on a grapefruit

lol! Damn those pre-pregnancy clothes! Grrrrrrr!

Helliecopter · 16/04/2014 14:17

Yeah Wombles don't you dare not go!!!

Lol @ humphrey I did that the other day too and know exactly what you mean!
