The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, ^combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Hi - sorry this is a fairly quick post and no time to catch up with what's been happening - poor DD ill yet again (4th illness in as many weeks, this time stomach bug) so yet again I'm trying to work from home and panicking about our impending holiday at the end of the week...

I haven't missed a single FD and on NFDs I always come in below TDEE, sometimes a fair bit lower. I haven't been able to exercise as much recently and during the last two gym sessions I've had with PT (tabata and weights) I've been quite wobbly and tired and whinge a lot

I still record my weight most days in a spreadsheet and for first 6 weeks I had steady loss and then the last two weeks it's veered up and down like crazy, but also pretty much plateauing. I've posted a graph here so you can see what it's done. Feeling really despondent and sad. My tops are getting too big for me, but it's not enough - I'm not losing any weight and I've no idea what's going on.

I don't feel like giving up as can cope quite happily with FDs, but I just feel so pissed off at my body. This plateau has coincided perfectly with me resuming medication which affects hormones but no one can bloody well explain what is going on.

I also found an old spreadsheet from over 5 years ago where I have recorded body measurements and weight - can remember then how determined I was to get lighter/smaller but they're tiny compared to how I am now.

Sorry for whining - I really want this to work and it HAS to work as there is nothing else Sad

magicalrealistmum · 14/04/2014 20:31

First FD done, big bottle of water on desk helped lots. Went over by about 100 cals, so will aim for just 500 on Thursday
OH has decided to also do 5:2 on his own but introducing an element of competition by sending me e- mail with both our starting weights . He plans to weigh in once a month, so I will have to keep at it now ! I hope we can share tips and support

BigChocFrenzy · 14/04/2014 20:42

Eagle You say your tops are getting too big. Have you lost inches during this plateau ? Inches mean fat loss, so are more important than weight.

2 weeks is nothing to worry about - your body is not a machine.
Some folks don't lose every week, but in fits and starts. It may just be a hiccup, not a plateau.
if the stall continues, then probably metabolism needs time to adjust to its new weight and lower body fat %.

Many people get plateaux at some stage, which can last several weeks or even months, especially if hormone balance / metabolism is changed by meds.

You need to persist with FDs & NFDs, try not to stress about it.

. Can you improve your nutrition for a few weeks ?
Sugary treats, or even too many starchy carbs, may be within your calorie allowance, but can slow down your metabolism and weight loss.

. You say you are exercising less. Can you ramp up your exercise routine again - adding Tabata or HIIT can sometimes break through plateaux.
Feeling weak during exercise can mean your body is resisting burning its fat stores, but try to keep exercising intensely.

Several older hands have overcome long stalls. I'm sure they've lots more tips.

Thank you so much for the advice Bigchoc - I've lost an inch off my boobs in the last couple of weeks, but some of that is down to stopping BF. As you get further down my body the inch loss is less and less.

I've probably made some pretty poor food choices recently - I've been staying within TDEE, but my TDEE actually feels too high and I think I've been spending a fair bit of it on treats... I've recalculated it for a sedentary person as I don't exercise as much as I think I do!

I'll definitely have more opportunities to exercise on holiday, as on a normal day I don't even get time to walk around at all as deskbound and no time. Am also going to try and do some exercises each day while I'm away too, even if it's just 10 mins.

It just feels too early to plateau - fingers crossed that the next kilo that comes off, stays off!

ErrolTheDragon · 14/04/2014 23:09

FD nearly over... slightly derailed by DD asking me to get her some dried fruit, couldn't resist having a bit myself. Not a huge amount just a bit annoyed with myself.

lucyintheskywithdinos · 15/04/2014 01:10

FD success...and I have just got home!

I do 24hr liquid only fasts, then eat until I'm full then nothing until 10/11 the next day. I eat protein and veg only for that meal, it usually ends up being about 500 calls but I loathe weighing and faffing so I only work it out occasionally to keep a check on myself.

Morning team

I've had a terrible night with DD2. Full of a cold, snotty, coughing and attached to my boob pretty much all night. I think I'm getting it too, which is nice. I think our household has been cold-free for all of a week before the next one descends. Brilliant.

On the plus side, yesterday's FD went very well. I had a gig last night, and I completely resisted everything on the buffet that was provided for us. Not a sneaky potato wedge or chocolate muffin. Nothing! So brought the day in at well sub 500. Go me!

Now, if I can just manage today's NFD without hoovering everything in the house....

Good luck everyone today, FD or NFDs!

lucyintheskywithdinos · 15/04/2014 09:45

Morning! I'm surprisingly perky this morning considering. Doing a mini-fast today...plan is to have lunch at a friend's house, then have a no-carbs portion of dinner. Need to make sure my stomach isn't bloated for a date tomorrow night!

Hellie will power of steel! I find those things so hard to resist, even though they are usually full of wheat which makes me feel like hell.

bigchoc hope your appointment goes smoothly and your dentist is lovely!

eagle I think different things work for different bodies on a plateau...but what works for me is doing a week grain-free.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/04/2014 10:34

Relief, escaped from the dentist with all gnashers intact.

Yes thanks, Lucy, he is a sweetie, with the gentlest hands.
Ok, back to grownup mode for 6 months !

Wow, Hellie, you have great willpower. Well done indeed.
Hope you and your DC can avoid any more colds for a while.

A great big Brew to any fasters today.

CiderwithBuda · 15/04/2014 12:10

Morning all!

Hellie - yuck to colds. And sick babies. Poor thing. Hope she is on the mend.

Lucy - grain free makes such a difference for me too. Not sure about with regards to plateaus (having never stuck to anything long enough to plateau!) but within 24 hours of grain free - wheat mostly - my rings get really lose. It definitely bloats me. Wish I could stay away from it completely.

Right. NFD here for me but I am on a MISSION. I go to New York in just over two weeks. And haven't lost the weight I wanted to of course. I would love to lose half a stone before I go. Which will get me to almost where I got to when I lost almost three stone on weight watchers a few years ago - 14 stone 10. I was 15st 4 this morning. So 8lbs would be fab but I know it would be hard to do. Half a stone will be as hard but I will be happy with that.

So no alcohol. No wheat. No sugar. No crap. Three FDS a week. Clean, detox-friendly foods only.

Had a green smoothie for breakfast but forgot to add protein powder and seeds so it hasn't filled me up. Planning a big salad with salmon for lunch. Not sure about dinner yet. DH wants to barbecue. In which case I will have a piece of chicken and lots of salad.

Eatriskier · 15/04/2014 14:51

Easter Biscuit bunny biscuits!!!!!

And on a more important note, have got the hunger monster back under control after the hideous perle de lait incident. Must not have crap filled yoghurt or full sugar mountain dew. Chocolate and sweets I'm ok with weirdly. Not sure why some sugary things send me nuts and others don't.

Also had my deviant porridge this morning with my homemade nut butter. Divine. Don't think I'll be buying ready made nut butters again especially as its nicer not being massively sweet.

Good luck today's fasters and well done losers and NSVers

itsnothingoriginal · 15/04/2014 16:18

Hi, good to find this thread!

I've just started 16:8 and wanted to ask a few things if anyone else here is doing that? Sorry if these things have ready been discussed - have skirted through thread but is v long!

I have about 4-6 lb to lose as lost a lot of weight a few years ago low carbing. Since then, the carbs have crept in and I also became anaemic so wanted to reintroduce more variety to my diet.

So wondered if anyone had success doing 16:8 just a few days a week?

Also, the book I have does not really exclude any foods but I can't believe that you can simply eat 'anything' with this plan and lose weight! Just wondered if those doing 16:8 are sticking to a strict calorie limit or low carb etc?

BigChocFrenzy · 15/04/2014 16:50

Welcome, ItsNothing . No, there's no magic bullet or fairy underpants around for weight loss.
To lose weight on any WOE, including 16:8 or low carb, you need a calorie deficit.
Sad
Even manic gym bunnies can rarely lose via exercise alone (but they may maintain), so plan how it is easiest for you to eat less.

Some folk find they automatically eat less within the 8-hr window, or if they cut out carbs, but most people have to count calories on at least some days.

Some of us here combine 16:8 with 5:2, so 2 x 500-cal FDs plus 5 NFDs of 16:8 around TDEE.
Alternatively for pure 16:8, split that 3000-cal deficit over all 7 days, any pattern you like.

Well after having fallen spectacularly off the fasting wagon I think I'm back on it (she says, hanging on to the back of said wagon by her finger tips). Phew!

Went off on holiday with friends for a week and my eating was excellent. Was so proud of myself! Ate 2 small meals a day, no snacking and hardly any sugar or carbs. Thought that I'd cracked it. Even hoped for a SV when I returned. However, I did not factor in the effects of The Drink Monster (from the same family as The Carb Monster, only a rarer species). Cocktails, beer, wine, gin morning noon and night Blush.

And so, as soon as I landed and the drinking stopped, the eating started! Scoff, scoff, scoff. I just couldn't stop! Had three attempted fast days in a row that were not successful Sad.

HOWEVER, made it back to my workout class yesterday and after a farewell holiday feast last night, (where I ate until I felt sick!) I have successfully fasted today! Hallelujah.

Have not read any of the thread at all, but I will do as it keeps me going. It's such a relief to be back on the fasting train!

Hope you are all enjoying your Easter break!

ErrolTheDragon · 15/04/2014 16:58

Itsnothing - I think the point is that nothing is actually banned - but in practice, many of us find it easier to manage if we do limit sugar/carbs.

itsnothingoriginal · 15/04/2014 18:16

Thanks BigChoc and Errol. Makes sense that I will need to count cals or carbs to see weight loss. It was very easy to lose weight low carbing but difficult to stick to it long term.

V useful thread - been reading back a bit and some good tips and advice here Smile

ErrolTheDragon · 15/04/2014 18:55

Some people find that once they've got an idea of what works for them on FDs and the various NFDs in a week they don't need to actually count. (I could probably do with counting more TBH because I've small with a correspondingly meagre TDEE)

Gumblossom · 16/04/2014 00:31

Hello. I am back. I used to be hopefulgum. I recently got upduffed, stopped fasting, but had an early loss, so I am back Sad.

I can't believe how much weight I managed to put on in such a short time (3 kgs). I always gain weight in early pregnancy due to the yucky metallic taste in my mouth, cravings for carbs and general yucky feeling.

So I am back. I have been trying to fast for a couple of weeks lately, but just couldn't manage it. So I am starting today. So far I've had only hot water with a squeeze of lemon. But it is only 7:27 am. I will make a pot of tea and nurse that for a while. DS has a play-date picnic this morning, which I think I'll be fine with if I take a thermos. I will have to make cake for him to take along, but it will have wheat flour in it which means I can't touch it (sometimes being gluten intolerant is a good thing).

I haven't read the thread - just a bit long for me, but I am waving to the familiar friends I made before leaving the thread. Zed, how much have you lost so far? You were doing so well when I left.
